      Yeah, the Corsair is lovely in VR. Just be prepared for the engine letting go on you. Gave me a right fright when I was testing it and didn’t know what to expect. The biggest jump-scare I’ve ever had in VR haha!

      Hi Chris,
      Not sure if you were asking me or Mark? My 2 pennies anyway haha; It depends what you’re looking for really. . .
      Corsair Pros:
      - More comprehensive systems / modelling
      - Better flight model (generally)
      - Better sounds
      - An all-round more comprehensive package
      Spitfire Pros:
      - Better modelling and texturing
      - Cheaper
      - Better flight modelling at low speed
      Both aircraft are great fun, though the Corsair is definitely the more complete product currently. My heart would say Spitfire, but my head would say Corsair haha.
      Sorry that’s a bit noncommittal, hope it helps though! : )

      Yeah, I guess it’s been a busy few months haha. The Corsair is a very solid effort from MILVIZ and I gather an update is just around the corner also. In VR it’s excellent. Just don’t do what I did and “test” the engine to breaking point. Biggest jump scare I’ve ever had in VR (I wasn’t expecting it at all) haha!

    Excellent review, thanks for taking the time to break down all these features! It seems that the most important issues were solved with Service Pack 1, including the supercharger (I would find it strange if it was difficult to model supercharging in a flight simulator, since it's a common functionality). The stall was tweaked later too. The weapons are available, but only when bought directly from Milviz, if someone wants that option. It will be interesting to compare to Magnitude 3 LLC's Corsair in DCS when it comes out! It's shown as 2022 but we know how it usually goes.

      Yes, MILVIZ have done a tonne of work on the Corsair since release, it's quite impressive what they ultimately managed to accomplish with the aircraft and I would say it's still one of the most feature-complete products available within the sim. All that being said, I'd put my money on the DCS version being right up there, if not the better product, because. . . DCS haha. The wait may be a while as you say, but I'm sure it will be worth it.

    A really good review. The thoroughness and professionalism of the review are excellent - 100% the go-to place for them.
    You seem to be keeping an almost instructor pilot/military cadence to the reviews- a real "thorough debrief" feel to them - but the music choices in other vids and comments you post have given evidence to a level of "fun"/personality that we haven't seen come through in reviews completely yet. Channel is growing well, looking forward to where it goes :)

      Thank you very much indeed! It’s always incredibly rewarding to hear that people are enjoying and appreciating the content. Certainly a nice little motivational boost as well.
      Haha yes, that’s probably true. I think quite a few people think the style is “put on”, that certainly isn’t the case. I find it easier to present in such a fashion, but I am aware it can perhaps be a little too “matter of fact” at times. I certainly try and mix up the style and variety of my content, I would like to do the same (to some degree) with my presentation style. I think / hope that will just continue to progress naturally though, along with the channel itself (when I watch some of my earlier vids, it sounds like I was sending myself to sleep haha).
      I’ve really enjoyed creating the content and of course it’s a more rewarding experience when people enjoy watching it too! I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing where it goes as well. . .

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations No problem. As you said, it should progress naturally, and you seem a lot more relaxed than you did on the earlier vids and I think that comes across. A lot of the review should be "matter of fact" in terms of it-is-how-it-is, but it would be nice to get a bit more about what you really enjoy, it's always nice to see youtubers having fun or even struggling in challenging conditions. nice to see the "human-factor" behind the professionalism hehe :)
      As for the Hurricane vid the other day, it's almost to the point where it's a history of the craft, not just a mach-run - and I very much like this aspect in those vids. I don't normally watch P3D vids these days but once I figured out what was going on in yours I click straight away now! I'd defo show those vids to my kids if they were learning about the BoB, as you give a really good feel for the craft. As I said, so much more than just a time-trial vid!

      Totally understand. I do plan on doing a livestream or two at some point, so hopefully that will teach me to "let loose" a little with my commentary haha.
      Well thanks very much again! The Mach Loop series is one I've really come to enjoy making actually. Obviously a bit of fun, more than a scientific process, but I've very much enjoyed learning a thing or two about each aircraft and understanding a little more about each ones strengths and weaknesses. Obviously the fidelity of the flight models varies wildly, but you can usually get some sense of the aircrafts "character". I enjoy adding the little history snippets in there as well, I think it rounds off the episodes a little more.
      Haha, can't blame you for not being a big P3D enthusiast any more. I would have uninstalled it by now if it weren't for the Mach Loop series. It's really showing it's age now and V5.1 in particular, feels very haphazard and clunky. I'm actually recording some footage for another developer with V5 currently and I have to say it feels like going back to a dinosaur sim now haha.
      Cheers and all the best : )
      PS. Hopefully you'll enjoy the next Mach Loop run when it comes out, turned out to be quite an interesting flight! ; )

    To be Devil's Advocate regarding the stall behaviour: Milviz say on their website that this is "loosely based" on the FG-1D which was developed too late to see service in WWII, by which time much of the "Ensign Eliminator" behaviour had been resolved by an aerodynamic widget on the right wing which helped make the wings stall at the same time. That said, the stall does look overly friendly in the sim. You would expect a left-wing drop combined with a massive prop on a massive radial engine and full power to be a perfect recipe for a quick and terrifying death!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад

      Thanks very much for the info Adam! I must confess to be rather uninformed on the subject and had thought that all Corsairs were created equal haha. I also didn't realise that MILVIZ had only "loosely" based their product on the FG-1D - interesting choice of words. . .
      Well that all makes a little more sense then and to be fair, the Corsair can certainly still "bite" when it wants. Also, credit to MILVIZ, they have updated the aircraft a tonne since it was released and it's hugely improved since this review (even though it was already very good before).
      Thanks as always! : )

    Nice video! I think it looks good enough to purchase, though I'll reserve judgement on the "authenticity" of the liveries. I'm seeing some creative license with the weathering and a couple of the thumbnails in the livery selection screen seem to have creative colors. I really like some of the small details, like the placard on the tail wheel strut and the landing gear compressing as more fuel weight was added.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      Thanks again Matthew!
      Certainly I’ve been very happy with the product. It’s not perfect sure, but as you say, overall it has lots of nice little features and attention to detail. It seems like MILVIZ put a lot of effort in and I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt (based on the overall quality) that most missing features are sim limitations.
      Once again, liveries are not something I know too much about myself I’m afraid. I maybe misspoke somewhat, but when I said “authentic”. I meant that they looked authentic, in terms of weathering, wear and tear etc (not fresh of the production line). I did make a specific choice on the livery for the video though; I found a real-world photo of the Corsair on Peleliu in (broadly) the same paint scheme. Thought you might appreciate that little detail ; )
      Thanks very much for your input once again Matthew! All the best : )

    The thing about the Corsair's stall behavior was that a lot had to do with inexperienced pilots applying too much power too quickly when the aircraft approached a stall, rather than snapping into spins at combat power.
    What surprises a lot of people about the F4U is that she was actually much more maneuverable than people expect for that much airplane. Especially with the flaps in combat position.
    I've never been fond of engine overheats in flight sims. They almost universally are too stringent with the failure points.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 года назад

      Thanks for some interesting points there Ambaryerno.
      The Corsair is not an aircraft I am all that familiar with myself; I was somewhat aware that it was a real handful at low speed, especially to the inexperienced pilot (as you allude to here). It is indeed very surprising to imagine the Corsair being maneuverable (though I have no doubt you're correct) - the thing does look like a bit of a flying tank haha. I would imagine it's all relative though, and like most American fighters, it wouldn't have been advisable to get into a turning fight with a Zero for example?
      I know what you mean regarding failures in sims. Pretty much with the exception of A2A, failures are always modelled as being far too digital. That being said, I would always rather they were modelled than not; at least then it encourages the user to fly the aircraft accurately and you always have that nagging doubt in the back of your mind. . . I'm sure everyone holds a different opinion on that one though.
      Cheers! : )

    • @Ambaryerno
      @Ambaryerno 2 года назад

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Oh, certainly, you definitely wouldn't want to try to turn with a Zeke, (even the humble F4F was actually a quite agile little bird. She just had the misfortune of being compared to the Zero) but the Corsair had a lot of options in a fight. The roll rate was especially strong.

    I bought the MV Corsair last week and overall it's a wonderful payware addition to MSFS. I am a huge Corsair nut and I appreciate the flight dynamics, diverse liveries, solid system dev/cockpit functionality and textures...However, I think it's a bit too touchy on takeoffs. No matter what techniques I employ, she wants to torque HARD LEFT at a certain power setting on the takeoff roll. All the right rudder input doesn't seem to matter. Maybe I am missing something but it seems like a weird little quirk of the model. Other than that it's definitely worth the money.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад +2

      Hi Todd,
      No, I don’t think you’re missing anything. I think it’s another shortfall with MSFS currently unfortunately. Most tailwheel aircraft seem to exhibit the same behaviour, especially if they have big torque-y engines. I have actually recently made a video covering this exact topic though. I find using the techniques that I cover, I can get pretty consistent takeoffs in the aircraft. Hope it helps : )
      ruclips.net/video/NbOFpPNrhIU/видео.html
      I don’t honk the techniques are true to life, more of a workaround, but it seems to get the job done. As you say, the aircraft is otherwise a really nice effort and does the Corsair a lot of justice! So hopefully you’ll be able to enjoy flying her all the more!

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations The main reason I'm eyeing one is to supplementy combat flight sim flying.
      MSFS2020 has good enough visuals that I can do things like practice VFR navigation and flight ops on more than a few maps.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      Agreed. This thing is very different to the Spit in many ways. Seems to need to be manhandled a lot more. As you say, the Spitfire needs a gentle touch. This thing, you basically want to gun the throttle and stamp on the rudder haha. I like it though, gives it a lot of character and I suspect the two aircraft were somewhat opposed like this.

    When I tested stall behavior I found that with 20inches it was very easy to control, but at 40 inches with gear down you get considerably more of a wing drop when stalling and it is a bit more snappy. Perhaps because 40 inches allows a higher angle of attack as stall hits.
    Also what is that carrier group addon?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, that would make sense. I’ve definitely had some much snappier wings drops on the approach, probably had more power on at the time as you say. . . A lot of it would caused by the extra torque etc from the engine at those power settings I would imagine. Overall I think the aircraft behaves quite realistically, I just think it’s a bit docile in the power off stall etc (as almost all MSFS aircraft tend to be).

One question/request --- would you be able to do some demonstration videos of Corsair landings on shore? Myself (and many others I'm sure) are struggling quite a bit with controlling the plane after a touch-down. It seems to take on it's own life half the time where rudder control seems to be arbitrary and eventually it ends up with either a wing-scrape, ground loop or just plain old "crashing into the trees next to runway". I can land the Waco and the FlyingIrons Spitfire just fine with minimal issues, but the Corsair just seems to be an animal of it's own... or I am missing some crucial element on how to do it.

      Hmm, I can’t say it’s something I’ve looked at all that much honestly. When you say you aren’t seeing a temperature change, are we talking short term or long term? I’m not sure if perhaps you are trying to use the CHT gauge in the same way as an EGT gauge perhaps? If it is modelled correctly, you wouldn’t expect to see the CHT rise instantaneously with a change in mixture (unlike an EGT), there will be quite a bit more lag and it won’t cause such a drastic change.
      It may well be that it’s not modelled correctly though. I know MILVIZ had to make some concessions due to the current SDK (like with the supercharger for example).

      It really depends on one's definition of "study level" and also which specific MILVIZ addon were talking about. I wouldn’t call the Corsair “study level” per se, but it’s not far off in some respects; the addon certainly offers up a challenge and it is a very nice recreation of the aircraft overall (with more features than most other addons).

    Low resolution textures and low poly model... you can see the normal maps working double time. They are lucky with the MFS overall render engine that is really good. Otherwise... the external model is end of the road FSX level. And I understand FM is Warthunder level... Nice engine failure simulation... maybe they should have named it like that instead? :)))

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      Low resolution textures, yes, externally I agree. Low poly, I didn’t really feel that came across personally. I don’t fully understand rendering engines and how they work etc, but I can believe what you’re saying is true; as it seems even direct port-overs look significantly better in MSFS than their host sim.
      Haha, I haven’t played War Thunder, but I’d be amazed if it’s anywhere near this bird! I think the flight model is very decent for the most part. It falls a bit flat at low speed, but basically every aircraft in the sim does at the minute unfortunately. . .
      Overall I personally think that the aircraft is quality. It certainly doesn’t feel like a cheap port-over and I’ve really enjoyed my time with it.
      Just my opinion though of course and I thank you for yours!
      All the best : )

    • @zaelu
      @zaelu 3 года назад

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations
      Warthunder is basically the very entry level in decency in FM... mostly a declaration from the devs that they actually make an effort but the game purpose does not justify such thing. As far as I understand MFS goes something like XP11 in FM... a bit more holistic approach and with limitations. DCS or Il-2 for example go into study and exhaustive mode (not always with good results though) . MFS FM is still a work in progress and basically any plane that is not directly supported by the engine should have its FM taken with a grain of salt by default. One of the best cases is the free H135 mod.
      As for the model, yes you can see is low poly if you really look for it and once you see it you can't unseen it. If you want to see how it's done you can search for quick explanations of how normal mapping works and help games look far more detailed in geometry than they really are. Also you can think that there is not point in having decent looking textures on some parts but blurry on other parts... other reason than corner cutting with the sole purpose to have a product that induces the sensation to the buyer that it is something else than it really is.
      For example the cables/pipes inside the cockpit... it is very cheap thing to add them yet they suggest to the casual viewer that there is actually more. Is smoke and mirrors. Little more (cheap) work where you can create the "suggestion" and that's it. You can see on the stick at around 7:30 the cheap 3d techniques used... balls and tubes glued together... not much of "real work"

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      Yeah, MSFS is trying to mix the X-Plane and the FSX methods as I understand it. I don’t really care how it’s done, so long as it works. So far, it still needs quite a lot of work! It’s pretty good under normal flight, but falls apart at the edges of the envelope. DCS has the best flight model of all the sims in my humble opinion.
      Again I’m no modelling expert, I’m sure you would notice a lot of shortcuts and cheap tricks when you’re into this stuff. Presumably some of it is to balance FPS as well though? I know this is probably is probably a sacrilegious thing to say haha, but I don’t mind a shortcut or two if it looks the part. The cockpit piping for example, it does the job for me. It looks more than good enough to be convincing, in area I will rarely if ever be looking at. Just my opinion of course.
      For me “feeling” is very important. Some products can tick all the boxes but just “feel” off I’m terms of ambiance etc. For me, the Corsair “feels” broadly right.

    If there should be significant upgrades to the resolution (aircraft and effects!) and the mentioned issues will get resolved it could be a top notch development in MSFS. I think many will have a problem with that pricepoint as it seems to be less complex then the CRJ at a similar price. (not to mention the available free projects that should keep prices moderate) - I think developers should look more to the segment of gamers, that are used to pay for ingame purchases up to medium amounts, but i am pretty sure the most of em will not spend 40 bucks on that one aircraft - if priced @ +- 25 bucks the return should be bigger if looking at the potential buyers within that market segment. @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      Fair enough. I would never presume to tell someone whether the product is worth the money to them as an individual. $40 has a different perceived value from person to person. For me, whilst $40 isn’t cheap, I think the Corsair is worth the money, relative to the rest of the flight sim market. The way I see it, it’s basically the cost of a trip to the cinema (maybe two) more or less and I know I will get many more hours of entertainment from the product (than I will from the movie). To each their own though as I say.
      Re whether it’s “study level”, “simulation level” etc. This is a term I use loosely, as everyone has their own definition of what it actually means anyway. I’m sure we’d differ. That’s the point of these videos though (at least in part). You can get a feel for how involved the product is and decide whether or not it’s right for you.
      All the best

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад

      Thanks very much, my pleasure on the review!
      As you will have seen in the video, personally I think the Corsair is already a great product. It does have a couple of issues / inop systems still, but MILVIZ are continuing to work on the aircraft. Their overall standard is high, so I believe they will sort out what’s left (within the bounds of what’s achievable in MSFS). I too would have liked to have seen some higher res paint schemes. Whether they come from MILVIZ or third party, I’m sure we will get some in the end.
      I see where you’re coming from on the price to some extent, but the product is at a fairly typical price point for a flight sim addon (alas haha). Of course I would always love it if they were cheaper, but the price:quality ratio of the Corsair is certainly very competitive with other flight sim addons. As you mention, the Corsair certainly isn’t as complex as the CRJ, but of course the aircraft is inherently less complex generally. For what it’s worth, I would say that equal amounts of care, attention and depth have gone into the two products (and the Corsair actually has less issues “out of the box”) For sure they would sell more units at the $25 price point, but I’m sure MILVIZ have done their sums on that one. . . Also a Carenado product is generally around $20 and I would certainly say a MILVIZ product is more than “twice as good”. I can definitely understand why someone who’s more of a gamer would be put off by the price, but with some of the more complex flight sim addons, as much development goes into one product, as perhaps an entire game.
      I’m certainly not trying to sell it to you haha and I wouldn’t presume to tell an individual whether the price is worth it for them. Of course $40 has a vastly different perceived value from one person to the next and it’s no small amount of money generally. I’m not always too happy spending my money on a virtual aircraft, it feels frivolous and I’m generally not willing to spend the PMDG / FSLABS sort of money I must admit. The way I look at it though, it’s a couple of trips to the cinema (at most) and I’ll probably get a lot more long term enjoyment out of it, than going to the movies. To each their own though of course!
      Thanks for your input. I hope my viewpoint clarifies the other side of the argument a little : )

      The thing is, for him it’s clearly a passion and something he has a wealth of knowledge on. I don’t unfortunately and sadly it’s not feasible for me to learn about an aircraft in that sort of depth (I simply don’t have the time). I’d be willing to bet he’s spent most of his life building up his pool of knowledge on historical aircraft etc.
      In an ideal world I’d love to offer up more historical comparison, but I’m afraid that’ll probably just remain a weakness of the channel / my content for the time being. I do try to at least demonstrate the aircraft, so that others can see for themselves how it behaves. Those “in the know” can hopefully get at least some idea from that.

    Why so much wide-angle distortion of the aircraft? Makes it look distorted and ugly.

      Hi Ray,
      I’ve had a few people ask the same thing. It’s certainly nothing intentional on my part. I just use the default sim settings for camera views and they do seem to give a bit of a “fisheye” effect. I have tried fiddling around a bit, but without too much success.
      If you know a way to mitigate this effect, it would be great to know?

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations -Use the + after backing up in the drone camera mode. Otherwise, use the scroll wheel to zoom in. As a pro-aircraft photographer. we ensure that we never distort the aircraft. And that includes me when in flight-sim. Experience tells me most people are uncomfortable with certain distortions. Mind you, sometimes distortion can put emphasis and positive slanton certain points - but rarely.

      Ah, well if I may then Ray. . . I’m no pro, that’s for sure haha. What sort of zoom setting do you find generally works for you in the sim? (I haven’t bothered adjusting the defaults much, as I felt there want much point unless I knew the result was actually going to be more accurate). I would assume that it should be a “one size fits all” as far as the zoom parameter goes in the sim; so if you do have a specific % setting that you deem to be appropriate, that would be really helpful! : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations = As a photographer, I eliminate distortion by eye (Photoshop, affinity, etc). Bear with me - lenses over 85mm on a 35mm camera or equivalent show no or little distortion. Wide angle lenses are the cause (mind you, sometimes you want distortion to exagerate or place emphasis on something. In brief, in drone mode I click the math pad + at least twice, but my eye sometimes tells me I need a third click on the + (I rarely use the zoom slider). On te external view I roll the mouse center wheel at least twice. But that sometimes leaves me seeing so little that I switch to drone view where I can + all I want and move back to see what I want to see. This also compresses backgrounds which often add a dramatic effect and more detail. Try it ~ Any other questions, let me know. But use your eye. The tail of the chopper should look proportional to the nose, not much larger or smaller.

      Ok, thanks very much for the advice Ray!
      I’ve tried a couple of taps on the + key for my most recent vid. Hopefully they goes some way to reducing the distortion. I’ll keep playing around / adjusting in subsequent vids, see what works out best. . .

    Ugly textures. Bad Flight model .. the roll rates are all wrong on this plane.

      Hi John,
      I would agree that the texturing is not as high-resolution as one might hope for in a modern MSFS addon. Personally I don't find it ugly, just sub-optimal (we all have different tastes though).
      As for the flight model, I shall have to take your word for it. I'm not all *that* familiar with the Corsair, that I could really offer an informed opinion. I generally liked how the aircraft flew though to be fair.
      MILVIZ did actually carry out a pretty substantial overhaul of the aircraft a few months back. I don't believe they altered the texturing, but it may well be that the flight model was altered (certainly plenty of new features were added):

    Overpriced by $20 imo

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 года назад +2

      I think $40 is a significant amount of money, no doubt about it. But I think $20 for the Corsair would be undervaluing it (based on other MSFS / sim products). A Carenado aircraft is $20, the Corsair is significantly better than those. The new EMB110 is even more money and again, looks to be done to a significantly lower standard overall.
      Can’t say I like spending $40 on virtual entertainment either (I always feel guilty haha), but the way I see it, you can’t get much for $40 these days. It’s a trip, maybe two, to the cinema. I know I’ll get a lot more enjoyment and longevity out of this, than some lukewarm Hollywood remake.
      I’m certainly not saying you’re wrong, your opinion is just as valid as mine. Just trying to play devils advocate a bit really. The Corsair is a good addon, it’s pricey, but it is quality (within the limits of what MSFS currently allows).
      All the best : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Add-on aircraft are all overpriced right now and they give you no reason to fly them.... with exception of maybe the CRJ.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      I agree that all of these fighter aircraft that we’re getting in the sim have a general lack of utility, but I guess that’s just up to the individual if that bothers them or not (personally I like flying them for the sake of flying them). Yes, the CRJ I think is very decent value for what it is! The rest, sure in one sense they may be overpriced (some more than others), but the developers aren’t go to sell many units and they of course are looking to turn a profit. Ultimately I think most things are “overpriced” these days. Inflation and stagnating wages has seen to that. But that’s a whole other conversation. . .
