    i have a new drum . should i burn the paint off 1st or mark and drill all my holes. thanks Barry

    Hey Frank, thanks for the video! When burning the barrel , do I need to remove most of the original paint from the outside? The burn removed the lower third but the upper still has origanal paint (under the black film). Tried using a plumber blow torch but I'll still be at it in 2022 if I carry on!!

      You actually do not need to get 100% of the paint off the outside. I mostly am concerned with the liner on the inside. the outside can be sanded and then painted over.

    Serious question: I bought a barrel that was used to store mineral spirits. Could I use this one for smoking? I’ve burned it twice already.

    Frank awesome series! About to build a drum on my channel and I had a question for you. Could you leave it with the rust and hit the outside with a high temp clear coat?? I was going to try to do a rust patina on my drum

    • @SmokerBuilder
      @SmokerBuilder  Год назад +1

      Yep absolutely!
      Clear coat works great but I prefer boiled linseed oil also

    Could you use rubbing alcohol to wipe down a drum before painting?

    Question bro, building offset smoker with two drums. On my fire drum... Does my damper have to be opposite of my vent duct into the smoker? Or can it be 90 degrees? Damper on front, vent port on left.

    • @SmokerBuilder
      @SmokerBuilder  Год назад

      Hey buddy, I’m not entirely sure what you were asking.
      The smokestack on a traditional offset just needs to be on the opposite end of your main cooking chamber from your firebox.
      You can see a bunch of diagrams on our website at smokerplans.net

    Don't use mineral spirits or thinner... why not?

    • @SmokerBuilder
      @SmokerBuilder  3 года назад

      They leave a oily film. That is why it is best to use windex or xylene.
