Geeze...This video took WAY longer to finish than I wanted it to. 6 months. Outrageous. Especially since the quality of the photos, to me, doesn't justify that much work. But hey, you need something to watch and I need something to post. So here we are.
The idea for this series of photos was to capture 2 iconic landmarks here in Orange County: Saddleback Mountain and Catalina Island. Both features are unmistakable Orange County icons and anyone who lives here sees them on a near-daily basis. Saddleback is in the east, Catalina is in the west. Hence the cute name of this video.
I used my Shen Hao TFC 617-A panoramic 6x17 camera to capture these photos, loaded up of course with Kodak Portra 160. I pushed Kodak Portra 1 stop and then 2 stops to boost contrast and grain. It worked, but I still had to do a little bit heavier edits on the scan than I normally do. I wasn't crazy about doing the heavier edits, but hey, it is what it is.
Sit back, relax, and watch some sweet, sweet film photography entertainment.
    Thanks for watching!

Nick, this is excatly why I love your videos. It IS a struggle to get the weather to cooperate, and I like that you don't edit out all the challenges. Nick is inspiring for sure. I got one of the same 6x17 cameras too. I'm hoping to get out this weekend after finally getting back home to New Orleans after evacuating from Hurricane Ida.
I hope to take it out this weekend and shoot some of the aftermath. I was blessed my home survived with minimal damage, worse I lost was food from fridge and large deep freezer filled to the brim with dead animals.....
There should be some interesting stuff to shoot.

My family moved to Santa Ana (McFadden and Fairview) in '61. It was some time after we moved in that I was riding my bike down the street in front of the house, looked up and noticed Saddleback Mountain for the first time. I don't know if it just happened to be obscured by clouds or haze those times I was outside before then but I was so surprised I went back home and told my mom "There's a mountain at the end of the street!". Little kids will say stupid things like that, Saddleback was NOT at the end of the street, it was over 20 miles away, but to my eyes it loomed larger than it really was at that distance.

    Hi Nick!!
As usual, great to see you again, always looking forward to your videos. On thought occurred to me while watching you shoot the post office.
I'm not generally a huge fan of the CineStill halation shots, BUT...was thinking while you were composing while those front flood "death lights" were on, that a CineStill 500T shot might be good to use those to for halation AND, get that bluer tint you liked on that earlier morning shot, even if you had to wait later to shoot it.
Anyway, just my random thoughts while watching.
I have the same 6x17, you inspired me to drop the coin to play with one. Do you know of any fresnel lens you could put on the ground glass on this camera? My eyes are getting worse with age and anything to brighten it would help. I thought I heard there was a factor option for one, but I've not found it yet. I did find I could buy an extra film back for it, so I got one and keep one with color and the other with B&W. I just got a Nikkor 210mm in the other day, but having to order a lens board with it. I discovered the lens came with what I found out was a Copal 1 Press shutter...very different that the regular shutter.
It only goes to1/125, it doesn't cock the shutter, the cable trips the shutter immediately, and you have to put on bulb mode if you want to preview with the aperture applied.
Oh well....it's later Friday, 'I"m rambling and well, it's New Orleans, so I've had a couple of cocktails.
Great to see you, please keep up the good work!!
    CC

Try shooting Saddleback sometime in May-July at about 0530-0600 hours. As a native to OC I have dreamed about shooting this subject for years. The colors as the sun comes up behind Saddleback are amazing during this time and you have about a 15 minute window.

Well, I REALLY admire this. Sticking to it!!!! I actually prefer the surprise one that looks like the arctic. But the whole project is terrific and I bet will contribute to your work a lot.
617 is definitely one of the all time great formats.
Despite having shot a lot of 69 with my folding Arca Swiss, I do not have the patience nor even the skills to do 617 Which is why I am going to up grade my GFX to the 100S in hopes that it will be reasonably close to the 617 film quality.
Probably not but the work flow is better suited to a weekend part time photographer with wordsmithing consulting practice. The one good thing about it is that I can afford the Fuji cameras and pricey GF lens mount.
Now if I could just learn how to use them….
Bottom line great video. Great shots!!

You can get some interesting images of Saddleback from around the Newport Back Bay. I think Saddleback looks more like its name from more to the north than Aliso Viejo. You might try Santa Ana area. Maybe get access to the roof of a building. I was taking pictures around OC in the mid-60s onward and it was a very different looking place back then, especially south county. When the family moved there in '61 between our house in Santa Ana and Costa Mesa Fairview and Harbor snaked through nothing but fields of fruit, strawberries mostly, and various veggies, tomatoes mostly.

If memory serves, I don't think you can push C-41 films because the development process washes all the silver out and you don't get any benefit from underexposing and extending the development time. So, the only thing you can do with C-41 film is underexpose it and then it looks like shit, which makes your scanning more difficult. You can push E-6 and you can push B&W film, where you can actually see the benefits of underexposing and extending the development times.
BTW, it seems to me that the reason you were so uncomfortable about post processing the files is because deep down in your South California subconscious, you realized that if you're going to do that, you may as well be shooting digital. Then again, if you're going to scan film, you may as well shoot digital. You're digitizing it anyway.
In any case, I enjoyed the video, the images were... ummm... they were. Although your favorite image was my favorite as well and it's that one that should be printed.

Loved this video. Documenting the Genesee River in Upstate NY and shooting in Santa Barbara, I know the pain of location scouting and SOCAL weather! I do love the Saddleback shot. Given time, anyone can get a clear postcard view of a California mountain. What you got is very Japanese and minimalist - just as I like to think of the region at its best.

Lovely series again Nick. Loved the soft Saddleback shot, and there are still bits of dark in the foreground to give it some depth. Loved both water pattern shots too, lovely vibrance to the colors. The Catalina shot is not my favorite, the lack of darks/foreground leave it having little depth perception and my eye isn't really led into it.
Ace Ventura shirt was 10/10. :)

A long time ago you could climb this little hill at the corner of Normandale and Vista Estate Dr in Lake Forest and have a spectacular view of Saddleback but I'm not sure it would work for you nowadays unless you're looking to include the Oakley Building and some housing developments that have popped up over the past 30-40 years. Nowadays it's where kids go to smoke and drink. The ground it littered with their junk. I'm trying to remember if you can see Catalina from up there too. If you drive up Vista Estate to the horse trail on the right you can walk down that to the little trail that leads up the hill. It's not a hard climb but easy to slip or trip on something.

The mountains photo look good to me, there's something very fresh about the transition to more light (from left to right) than the usual "going darker" theme...although... I'd try shooting it at dusk too but it seems like an obvious photo. Good call on cancelling the first attempt at the island (the one still under Trump), the final photo (under Biden) looks nice paired with the mountains, plays a similar vibe.
I had a project in mind too that I ended up doing although I was sick of it but the more I tried to leave it, the more it ate my brain. Maybe we just have needs...sick, sick needs :)

Nick, thanks for sticking with it and being honest about your frustrations with the project. This makes me feel normal when I have similar feelings. I am a big fan of these types of images (low contrast, line and tone) and applaud your bold decision to use colour film... I usually make these images in b&w, adding colour introduces a whole other level of complexity to a project like this. If I was being honest about my reaction to the images, I would think that the increased amount of colour in the Catalina image compared to the Saddleback image breaks the congruency of the series. Individually though I appreciate both of them very much.

    Thanks

I would love to hear your thoughts about your feelings in a project like this. Like, you're obviously frustrated, but I'm curious what that feeling is. Like, is it that the fun of the "new project" is gone? Like, it all seemed like pretty enjoyable stuff, so I'm curious to hear more about your thoughts on the emotional journey of a long term project

Speaking of Long Beach Harbor, if you could get permission to be there I think you'd have a ball shooting inside the Port of Long Beach, the cranes are especially majestic but there's a million other things to shoot.

If you ever need a lens longer than 400 I've got a Nikkor T 720 you can borrow for a few months... Of course i live in Australia so you'd wanna plan in advance because it would take a week for me to get it to you.

Stand on your subject (saddle back), and look back towards your ideal shooting location with binoculars. You may be able to find unobstructed shooting locations.

@ Nick Carver I love your videos, Sir! But: there are ways to precisely forecast situations like haze in its intensity or (cirrus) clouds as in this case, so you could save alot of time... are you into meteorological things? Keep up the great work!

Don't feel bad, you've tried your best. I was looking at the second photo and thought to myself, that's not a nice photo, the waves are still. And the first photo had trees that were sticking out in the foreground.
But then it hit me, you can't make the perfect shot. Sure, it would be nice to have less glare, no trees popping out, but then again, it might not look as nice again.
So then it all came to me, yes the perfect photo that you probably imagined beforehand was way better than what it eventually came out (probably fantasy looking), but it didn't, it wouldn't.
You have commitments in life, you can't always camp there and wait for that perfect shot. There are other things in life you've gotta do.
So in the end, don't feel bad about yourself, you've put in the effort, you've enjoyed that special moment with your camera, you've done your best.
Every time you look back at those photos, you're gonna tell yourself: Sure it wasn't the best, but it meant something to me, and no one can ever take it away from me.

Loved this video. I like all the images, but Catalina definitely has what I imagine is a So Cal vibe. Also its -14 C today, and I am seriously jealous of your weather!

I feel like I need to go back and rewatch all your videos. I just realized the particular camera you're using here is for panoramic shots only! 😂

ok...be honest. as a landscape/architectural photographer have you ever considered investing in a small cherry picker to haul behind you so you can get elevation wherever you want? because i have and it almost seems reasonable....

If plans A,B,C,D, and E don't do it, then F it. I appreciate your persistence. It think it paid off.

After growing up with film…. The only reason I see to use film is the fun factor of playing with toys. Digital medium format blows the image quality and resolution away. Plus you can always put a film grade on it if you want to.
