Here's another one of them videos where I go out to the desert, take lots of pictures, and make a video about it. And this one covered all sorts of bases. I was shooting 6x17 with my Shen-Hao TFC 617-A, 6x6 with my Mamiya RZ67, and even more 6x6 with my new Mamiya C220. That's right, just squares and long-skinny rectangles. 1:1 and 1:3 is what I'm all about, friends. Keep them nasty 4:5 and 2:3 aspect ratios outta here, man! I don't need them. Well, yes I do...but not on this trip!
Love monochrome, do ya? Boom, I got you. Ilford Delta, baby. How about Kodak Portra? Yessir, I got you on that too. Old buildings your thing? Say no more, friend. Scantily-clad supermodels on the beach? No...no, I don't have that. But the other stuff I got.
I had some ups and downs on this trip. At times I was really feeling that creative nectar coursing through my veins, other times I was feeling like a complete and utter hack. I suppose both things can be true at the same time. But the point is, it wasn't all perfectly smooth sailing. And that's okay. That's part of analog photography. When you're shooting film, you just don't always know if things are going well until you get back to the lab for processing. Luckily for me, things turned out well overall. I'm pleased with many of the photos, and that's the best I can hope for.
Thanks for watching!

“I think I got one or two good shots.” The whole roll is full of bangers Nick!
Haha! Love it. Thank you.
Big facts
Exactly!
tyvek05 you must be real fun at parties. Ever heard of hyperbole? It’s just a fun statement my friend.
tyvek05 are you even professional? Go somewhere with that comment. This community don’t need negative people like you.
The most underrated youtube channel
Just thinking about that...
It's just a shame it did not get to 100k subscribers yet...
Great quality videos, photographs, didactics, humor...
Doing my part to share!
Ps.: And looking for a 17x6 camera hidden from my wife... U_U
Yeah man, what a shame :(
I agree, regardless of the fact that he's a fantastic photographer. These videos are thoroughly entertaining.
AND the most underrated voice over voice. It is smooooth as butter.
@@jespersichlau4343 yeah man, but also just the production values, choice of b-roll and accompanying music. It's just all good
You’re the Bob Ross of RUclips photography channels. So chilled and easy to listen to. I mean that as a compliment! 😂 Fascinating seeing the USA’s lesser-known spots as well. Best wishes from the UK. 😉👍🏼
I'm just going to photograph some happy little bushes here. They'll be our little secret.
Nick Carver Show us how you shake that polaroid!! (Btw when you want to come to italy just tell me, there are some cool bushes overe here). You are the best nick!!
@Nick Carver: that got dark real quickly... 😂
That’s exactly what I was thinking. The Bob Ross of photography.
"I mean that as a compliment!" You don't say. 🤦🏼♂
A Nick Carver day is a good day! Play!
That shot at 19:11 is pure ART!! The way that shadow under the window bank makes an arrow that points directly at the recliner. The dusk shot is great too, but for some reason that first one did it for me. Great video!
Yes, thats the best shot, pure magic
Agreed, that was the best of them
I would buy that one too!
Agree, that is the best! :)
I agree. It's a daytime shot, but it reminded me of some of Hopper's lonely interiors. The dusk shot is lovely, but not as dramatic.
I always just get buzzed after watching these vids . They are an honest portrayal of a guy doing what he loves and doing it well .
Thank you very much
Super enjoyable as always Nick! I love that scene with the recliner! Such a great find, and it's great to see how you captured it as the light was changing. I'm also super jealous that you were able to get away to the desert before things started to heat up.
Thank you, sir! I somehow manage to miss the perfect spring desert weather every year, so I lucked out with these few days.
The day just got a whole lot better 👍🏼
I wish Nick Carver did more videos. His dialogue is precise and well articulated. Professional standout
22 minutes of pure high class entertainment. Thank you Nick. I enjoy your videos so much and agree with you these old buildings will eventually just fade away to nothing ...
This is not a youtube video this is a youtube show. Very entertaining, sprinkled with humor, human feelings and spectacular photographs.
Best notification I’ve gotten in a long time. Thank god.
A 4Runner, a camera, and amazing scenery....life doesn’t get any better.
Never seen a single video with so many outstanding images in. No arrogance no showing off just quality and passion. 👏🏻😊
Man, that desert living room is amazing.
Man I really hope a streaming service just throws a ton of money at you so Photography On Location became a streamable series.
Thumbs up if you want to see Nick shoot more perfectly framed photos of liquior stores.
This is pretty much, why I built a bed in my van. I have this grandiose idea of finding something that needs morning or evening light and I can sleep Comfortably before and/or after shooting it.
Great video. Subbed
You don't get nearly enough credit for your filming and editing skills. You always get a lot of great coverage, your transitions are creative, your music choices always for nicely, and your style is consistent and high quality.
I know the behind the camera stuff is tedious but the result is super polished.
So, cheers to that my friend.
Don’t ever quit and go home, you’re sh*t is awesome and super inspiring!
Boy have I been waiting for some Nick Carver amazing film photography❤️❤️❤️
that last dusk shot is a banger! way to change things up and challenge yourself 💪🏽
Yeah, the interior shots are fantastic. I likes the first one as much as the last one.
Bill Brandt sprung to mind .. 👌 delightful
I watch a lot of photography channels on youtube but nothing gets me more motivated and excited to shoot than these On Location videos.
I really like the chair panoramic with the sun streaming in. It adds a nice mood.
Another great video of the great Nick Carver... love the Photography On Location series
😮omg... Love the squares ones ... And no, sir. Not tired of ur shots in the deser 🏜️ 😮😮😮😮😮😮
What really caught my eye was the cup in the middle of the floor of the chair building.
That last moody dusk shot is so good. Nice choice on pulling the film.
Brilliant. Back to thé roots of the photography. Thank You
Ok, well that got a subscription. Thank you for your creativity and your hard work Nick. We all hear the voices from time to time. I've been shooting since that 220 was new and they always come back from time to time.
Woo!I like the last picture shooting chair inside the house! Cool!
Really enjoyed this man. The talk of creative ruts really resonates with me as that’s what I’m always struggling with myself. Great video Nick
You are just a killer Nick that composition with the chair is just insane!!!
That shot with the birds,... maaannn, a work of art. Thanks for sharing your thought process
the dynamic range of certain films is just incredible
If your intuition tells you the conditions are not right it's ok to pack up and return another day, creativity shouldn't be a battle. I really liked the abstract nature of the b&w boulder shots, a masterclass in composition.
I had an ancient version of your TLR, Mamiyaflex, with an 80 & 180mm. Such a solid camera. Took that camera everywhere. Got it in the 70's.
Glad to see that you brought out the C220 for a walk. I have several of the C3 series, C3, C33, C330, etc. Mine are begging me to get outside to have a look around. Time for some Tri X and inspiration. Thanks for the B&W shots taken in the rock pile.
Love the way you talk through your photos warts and all. What works and what doesn't work so well. I'm trying to improve my photography and channels like this where I can be a fly on the wall with a talented photographer are really helpful. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
Hello Nick, such a great video I watched. Especially I loved captures in black and white taken by C220. Thank you, Nick!
Yet another fantastic location video. You really deserve to be picked up for your own TV show!
Love the tempo of your videos. Is like a stress remover. :)
It’s truly enjoyable to listen to a person’s process and their self-critique. I had a different point of view on which version of the recliner photo worked best. It’s fun to see all the iterations and hear which the photographer thinks best matches their vision and style. Always fun Nick - thanks!
Wonderful shot with the 90mm of the interior with the chair. Keep up the great work always love to see your on location videos.
Damn man. That first interior chair shot is the stuff dreams are made of. Banger of an image.
True point about capturing now before its gone. One of the reasons I love photographing abandoned places.
2:35 it’s a great shot but knowing that he’s going back for the camera makes it a bit hilarious
And here at 11:28 - Get out of bed Nick!
Wow that last picture 🤩
That Scammy's sticker @00:16 - awesome!
That recliner shot with the sunset at 20:26 is what photography dreams are made of. I love it.
Your old building photos are great, keep shooting them
I've just bought a c220 and have run one roll through it so far and I love it! It's like a tank or a well made clock, just well built and a pure machine! I've only just gone back to film recently and loving the experience. Just discovered your channel and love the content, I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos! Hope you and family are all well, keep up the good work!
Love your videos Nick, always make me laugh!! That last shot was the bomb!! Thanks for your great work from Australia.
C220 shots 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I really love the second composition of the building with the chair in it. The frame is subdivided into four different rectangles that are each like their own photograph. Though it is "cluttered" in a sense it's also "organized" (if that makes sense) in a way that is very complex yet very pleasing.
“Organized chaos” or “ordered chaos” is my favorite thing. Thank you.
I agree, that second frame of the recliner series has a lot going for it as well. I, too, appreciate how it’s divided into multiple images within itself. 👍🏻
I find whats more impressive than the Photography itself (and no NICK, you're not a hack) is the effort and thoughtfulness you put into the video. Most will not even consider all you do to get the shots you edit into this. Me personally, I was on Auto trader looking for a Toyota 4x4 while listening early on. :) Thanks for sharing.. And Yes, Square is another way of thinking, Ive recently broke out my dusty Hassey 503cxi because I miss that format. My heart wants me to get a Revel, my mind tells me hold on there buck.
You are an artesian and master of your craft. Love your work.
i rememeber seeing this video 2 years go and the composition of the chair is still an all time favorite of mine. there's some things that i like to do different and i'm more liberal with like color but the one thing your photography instilled on me is "never influence the composition" i love making a story of my compositions and the photo of the chair is what i mentally picture when i take a photo
The desert likes you, some of your best work here...
That last image is so good man. I'm glad to make it through the video. That last image is so nice.
I absolutely love it when you do these types of videos Nick. Huge fan of abandoned spaces and you always seem to find such interesting buildings. The final shots with the chair inside the building are superb, the telegraph poles framed within the windows one by one are a great touch.
Great video Nick...love the 6x17 w/recliner! Stay safe!
Let's go Boys!! Nick is back dropping some gems today.
The chair with the mountain is the money shot
Love your process Nick
Oh the voices, boy do I know those voices...
Great video as usual.
Just saw you put your 6x6 mask under the RZ focus screen. I just learned last week that the masks can actually be slid onto the TOP of the focusing screen, using the two small black pieces on the left and the larger one on the right. Take out your focusing screen, and slide the mask top to bottom. Fits just right and allows you to still see your LEDs at the bottom. Doesn't really make a difference focus-wise, but I find it a better, tighter fit for my masks. Thanks for the vid, as usual. I just picked up a C220 myself last night and got so excited by your excellent shots. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks for the kind words! With my mask, I can see the LEDs. This one fits in perfectly and goes in easy. So long as it’s cut right, it’s a tight fit and takes all of 2 seconds to install.
I love photographing old buildings anywhere. Great video. Thanks for the trip. Just picked up a c220. Can't wait till it gets here. Mixed emotion on the 220. About a year ago I sold some gear including a Mamiya c33. Thought I was done with film. That was costly. Love the photos.
I appreciate you taking me.
Those interior shots are spectacular!
Great final photo! But I also really like the 6x6 images. Thanks for sharing.
I missed this. I lockdown. How did I miss this?? It would have really cheered me up then. I mean, it cheered me up now, but then would have been even better! Love your videos all to pieces.
Hey, I went out South Utah, Northern Arizona the exact same time because of that spell of weather! Good to know we were on the road at the same time! Choice video!
I love your storytelling and esthetic taste.
I'm so happy when I see you've posted a video
Thanks to Thomas Heaton i found your channel. I will be watching all your videos now. Some great shots and stylish video. great job.
"I don't often use 90mm lens ... because I'm not that attracted to the wide angle look anymore" :) A lot of us cropped sensor shooters would scratch our forehead at this statement ))))))))))))) Great photos Nick! Can't wait to see more of your work.
Well that was dang awesome. Been itching to get out in the Mojave... So hot right now. Great shots man.
This video has given me a renewed burst of energy for my photography. The photos are ‘top drawer’, I love your ethos, the videography and story telling is perfectly pitched, but above all I love your advice and the reassurance you give. So IMHO you’re a million miles from being a hack, and thank you! Looking forward to the next video, and in the meantime, I need to sign up for your learning to meter course.
Ooooooh that last shot, love those colors
watching one of these videos right before bedtime is like Grandpa telling me the best bedtime story ever. About abandoned scary recliners, of course.
Beautiful work 👍
Great video. I really like the first wide angle version of the interior shot with the lounger. There is so much to that photo. The chair, the shadow areas and then almost looking like a strip of film frames looking through the window. I like the placement of the telegraph poles. It's a picture with a lot of individual stories in it.
We appreciate your honesty and candour man. You're humble and funny and your knowledge photographique is second to none. Would love to see your sub count quadruple in the coming months. Thanks for the ride :)
I wouldn’t mind seeing that myself. Thank you, my friend!
I'm always amazed at how many cameras you have. I have three (two analogue and one digital) and my wife reminds me every day to finally downsize the camera collection. 🙂Great video!
Take my hat off to you Nick, out there and-in-and-doing, not too much jibber-jabber. First watch and not my last. Thanks.
Nick Carver is like Bob Ross. But only if he was a RUclipsr in 2020 who has seen enough shit, picked up an alcohol addiction to go through it, and is now trying to escape quarantine and leave his darkness behind, going on lone long trips to photograph the forgotten places which once played hosts to various fringe societies. He has my Respect. LOL
Nick...American Legend. Documenting disappearing ‘Americana.’
I was excited to see this pop up on my youtube. I have a Mamiya C330 that I haven't touched in too may years. This makes me want to go find some film and put my digital away. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Nick. You're knowledge is actually a lot more profound than you let on and your thought process is genius!
I can't help feeling there is a sadness about many of these old building. As has already been said, there is an Edward Hopper feel to them. "The Night Hawks" particularly springs to mind. Thanks for taking us along.
Thank you for inspiring through your work and sharing your process.
Well, well... hello again my SoCal Brother. Not sure how I let this vid slip through my impeccable filtering process when it comes to my email box, but I got to thinking today; "I haven't seen any videos from Nick Caver lately". So I turned on the internet machine, pulled up your channel and low and behold... a gift.
This looked like a fun trip. Maybe a little frustrating, but mostly fun. This series of old abandoned buildings may seem a little repetitive, but when you drive past one of them in the future and it's gone, you're going to be incredibly glad you took the time. I think the overall aesthetic is pleasing to the eye and very tasty to my northern boreal forest sensibilities. Thanks for yet another instalment and if you think that chair looks kinda creepy, well... I think there might be a body buried in the concrete right in front of it. Have a great weekend!
I think the daylight pic from the post office is very nice. Great video again Nick. Greetings from germany
Nick... Holy Moly - it got to the end of the video... and I went hold on you've only just started! Again, I run out of superlatives. I love the 617 look and I am so so tempted to do some 617 with people in focussed on a movie look... That chair shot! I shoot a lot of 4:3 on the GFX but always shoot with 16:9 in mind for the cinematic look... I have a C220 as well... which is loaded with Portra and has taken a back seat to the Pentax 67! You have got my creative juices flowing again! Oh maybe I really do need the ShenHao 617 that's in a dealer's shop in the UK... no sense it gathering dust there... but then what lenses! Best, David
Ah man. Incredible video, Nick. Thanks for bringing us along.
I really wish you posted more videos. Your channel has such a great feel to it. Been subbed for years. Big fan Nick!
Me too, my friend. Thanks for the sub!
Hi Nick, great as always. I don't get tired of seeing your deserted buildings, and glad you're actively trying some new things too.
Perhaps you can dig up some old folks that used to work in these places too, so they can pose for you and can have a chat in your vids, that'd be cool to see and it'd add some life to the inanimate scenery.
