Yup, MJ got injured right before the All Star break where they were 26-21 then went 11-24. Like you said, their biggest dip was in their defense based on their splits despite a surprise up tick in shooting efficiency (which could just be attributed to shooting less 3 point duds). Interesting enough, the next year splits saw a similar trend where they performed better pre-All Stars and dropped off after.

Jordan also came into the Wizards off of having his ribs broken in the off-season. As he got into basketball shape he was averaging 27ppg in the twenty games prior to the knee injury. In the ten games before the injury he averaged 29ppg. The Wizards ran off a 15-1 win streak. So playing after the injury dropped his stats down to 25ppg for the session. We'll never know how good he would have been due to injury.

Arenas knows so little about the game & league that he played in. Yes, there are more scoring guards in today's league, but that's also because it's easier for guards to score today than in past. Also, Jordan played a lot of Forward in his Wizards days. He was also still effective defensively despite not making an All-Defense team. The Wizards were better defensively with him on the court than without & he occasionally took on the opposing team's best scorer in certain spots (Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, etc).
LeBron does have the benefit of being physically bigger, taller and he probably knew at some point longevity was the only argument he could make so he focused on that instead of rings...

If you compare Jordan's 03 stats to his 98 stats you will see he averaged more rebounds and more assists while shooting a higher percentage from 3 and the foul line. He lead the 03 Wizards in steals + assists which is an indication he was their best defensive player. He did shoot less than in 98 because he was the #2 option behind Stackhouse, but he actually had a much better season than Stackhouse. The year before Jordan was a bit rusty and did not have a great year, but his last year with the Wizards he was good.

That’s why his body did not hold up as well. as time goes on, we will see players last a lot longer because the contact of the game is a lot less 38 years old is impressive to still be playing but I have a feeling it won’t be that impressive in the next 20 years.

He's also the only player to have a 40+ point game at 40+ too. I was just writing about this on Quora last week, pointing out mostly all players are retired before 40 & those that remain are usually big men. Regardless none have ever come close to 20 ppg.

MJ could've still played in the NBA @50 yo. He would have been upper mid-tier, not GOAT level but still a starting SG on most teams if you think about it. At 50, he would have had 'forced rest' (Popovich did the game a great dis-service with implementing that all those years ago, IMO), the lack of hockey style defense from opponents nowadays (Wilt & MJ forced the League to change the rules because of them, they were that good, remember), more roster rotation in-game, and the implementation of the review system & the newer flagrant foul rules... he would still be putting up starting SG numbers, making the franchise $$$, mentoring younger players (as he did with the Wizards), and bringing the MATURITY level up in the league post-50. I didn't say post-55 but he could've played another 3 or 4 years, just to prove that he could at that level. The one's Gilbert talk about at 38 probably had multiple injuries because the game was more fisical and the staff didn't have the knowledge that they have today about diet, traning and recovery.

The next year, he was 38 for the entire regular season. He avg’d 23.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.6 bpg, and had 56.4/76.5 % splits in 79 games. LAL lost in the WCF to Houston that year but that was still an impressive year.
Whoa! Whoa! The fact is Washington never put Jordan on the floor to relive his glory days. He was put on the team to mentor the likes of Arenas and Stackhouse and teach them to be winners in the league. To pin point it correctly, he should have been the Wizards versions of Udonis Haslem, but averaging 15 to 16 points a game. The point was learning to win, not maintaining a scoring standard. And Jordan's UNC years, Bulls years and Wizards years reveal that a team with him cannot win titles or playoff series without the right players sacrificing parts of their offensive game to make his offensive game look better. Pippen, Rodman, Kukoc, Grant and Harper all played harder on defense and sacrificed their offensive skills to accommodate his 24+ fg attempts a game. Had Washington had the same type of players willing to sacrifice for Michael like Bulls players did, they might have made it to the playoffs. Scottie Pippen's real beef with Jordan is that all he sacrificed in scoring, effort, pay and ego to keep the Bulls winning the narrative stills remains Jordan won six titles and the rest of the Bulls just watched and passed Michael the ball.

I think the argument of what a player is able to do at a higher age now versus then is a little ridiculous. Science has evolved quite a bit since then and Lebron puts a lot of money into his body. Had he been in the older era he might have already retired, but still would have had an amazing career.

Yes, there are more scoring guards in today's league, but that's also because it's easier for guards to score today than in past. Also, Jordan played a lot of Forward in his Wizards days. He was also still effective defensively despite not making an All-Defense team. The Wizards were better defensively with him on the court than without & he occasionally took on the opposing team's best scorer in certain spots (Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, etc).

If you compare Jordan's 03 stats to his 98 stats you will see he averaged more rebounds and more assists while shooting a higher percentage from 3 and the foul line. He lead the 03 Wizards in steals + assists which is an indication he was their best defensive player. He did shoot less than in 98 because he was the #2 option behind Stackhouse, but he actually had a much better season than Stackhouse. The year before Jordan was a bit rusty and did not have a great year, but his last year with the Wizards he was good.

I think the argument of what a player is able to do at a higher age now versus then is a little ridiculous. Science has evolved quite a bit since then and Lebron puts a lot of money into his body. Had he been in the older era he might have already retired, but still would have had an amazing career.
