    It's your turn... How great the Jordan's competition in the 90s??
    EDIT: Just to clarify, Some of the Pistons players age that were referenced in the video were a year off. Basketball Reference lists their age AT THE START of the 90-91 season, meaning if they had a birthday during the season, then they a year older than the age I listed them. I realize that now. Regardless, the point stays the same.

      Jordan didn’t play in a weak era, he made everyone on the court look weak compared to him and the Bulls.

None of the teams he beat in the finals won a championship(91 Lakers don’t count, easily the worst team he faced). Everyone says the Suns, Blazers, Knicks, Sonics, and Jazz were incredible, but if they were so good then how come they couldn’t win in 94 or 95. Hakeem played with literally no all stars in either season(Drexler was a stud in the 95 playoffs though). I just wonder if he would have had the same success if the Jazz or Sonics or someone else had that Championship DNA because I’ve seen what that can do for a team, cough 2014 Spurs, and 2019 Warriors(Ik they lost, but for them to compete despite all the injuries is incredible)

      The reason people say the era was weak is because the league added 6 teams and thinned the benches. The European players weren't good enough to fill the void for about 10 more years. This video ignores the reasons people have cited, and picks dumb reasons so he can easily defeat the arguments. Compare 80s roster depth to 90s roster depth and you can see how thin teams were spread. Stockton and Malone couldn't get out of the second round in the 80s. Those teams had All-Star supporting casts Mark Eaton, Jeff Malone, & Adrian Dantley. The 90s Jazz teams made the finals twice with Greg Ostertag & Bryan Russell as starters. This isn't a knock on Jordan- you play who you play, but when the Celtics are bringing Hall of Famers McHale and Walton off the bench, or the Lakers with All-Stars Michael Cooper, Bob McAdoo and Jamal Silk Wilkes coming off the bench and you compare that to teams who start Ostertag, David Benoit, Russell, Kevin Duckworth, Jerome Kersey, Terry Teagle you can see there's a huge discrepancy in talent and depth.

      @@andrewcook1246 coming to a realization in the past few days, think I made a mistake here. That being putting up a statement that removes Bron's agency to possibly adjust to the situation if he did play in that era. Not to sell MJ short, guy bulked up and combined power and finesse to start getting good in the paint no matter if he played against power or finesse. Could Bron have been able to do so as well? Possibly. Part of that statement I made there does want to see how Bron would have played in the hand-check, no blood no foul era of the late 80's - early 90's. However, he seemed averse to adding skills to his game. He added some, but nothing too substantial.
      My biggest criticism with LBJ is when adversity came, he seemed to fold. Wasn't always the case though now that I've looked back thanks to a great video done by SBN. Back in the 2000's Cavs days, the guy seemed fearless. Taking the last shot, carrying the team in scoring, sprinting down the floor to play D. What he lacked was a Pippen like teammate. He had good roleplayers and stars but he never had a teammate the magnitude of Pippen. Thing is, think he over-corrected and went the other way too much when he reached his prime since after that, now he is of the mindset of getting most of the best players on his side and in doing so, deferring to them when adversity hit.
      This would be overly long if I were to put in all my criticisms in comment form, might just record a commentary/video essay of it some time but I'll try to distill it down. I have been selling Bron too short given his abilities and accomplishments. That being said, I still put MJ and a lot of hall of famers over him. Bron is an amazing player with faults, much like all and while MJ's had his faults too, those faults seemingly did not manifest in his role as a basketball player and sadly, IMHO, Bron's faults do extend on the court.

That’s the reason why they never lost any NBA finals. “And I took that personally” -MJ

But Jordan's will to win...unmatched. I love to debate whether the 94 and 95 Rockets Championship teams would have lost to Jordan and the Bulls. I always end up in the same place. Yes, Hakeem was great, no doubt, one of the best ever...but you know who else falls in that category of "almost" champions. Drexler, Barkley, Kemp, Payton, Malone, Stockton. It is my (biased) opinion the Bulls would have won bc of Jordan's will to win. Maybe the Rockets would have won one...maybe lol. The rockets were one of the most complete teams out there and if the Bulls lost that more solidifies why the rockets having the hardest championship of all time to be won. And I don't think they'll win the next seasons and do the next three peat. Since competition got better during Jordan's first retirement. And they needed Dennis Rodman and other key pieces to rebuild a greater team. If jordan didn't retire, Horace grant would've stayed with the Bulls and no Dennis Rodman means that the team would've been worse and Jordan will have to resort to having to put great numbers on a title contender team but not one enough to compete with the likes of the jazz.

    The problem with Jordan was, he was just too Dominant. He took the Crown in 91’ and never let anyone take it. He went 6-0 in the Finals. Because of that, players of the opposing teams never got the credit they deserved. He faced great players on very good teams. Also remember, back then the East was the dominant conference. The Bulls had to beat great teams just to get TO the Finals. He didn’t have a cakewalk to the Finals…...like other great players did……..
    Example, let’s say Jordan was less Dominant and had the same winning % in the Finals that Lebron has, that being .333%. That would mean Jordan would be 2-4. Let’s say he wins in 1991 and 1996, and losses in 1992, 1993, 1997, and 1998. Imagine how differently everyone would see those Teams and Players on those teams, even though they'd be the EXACT same teams. Only difference in this scenario is Jordan being less Dominant. Charles Barkley would be an NBA Champion the year he also won MVP. His career would be Complete!
    Same with Clyde Drexler. Imagine how he’d be viewed today if he had defeated Jordan in 92’! He’d have bragging rights and would have gotten his revenge on Jordan that year. Because that year Jordan won MVP…….2nd in voting was Drexler!
    The ones that would be lifted up the most would be John Stockton and Karl Malone. They’d have beaten Jordan and the Bulls in back to back years! Two titles against Jordan. Both of those players All Time Rankings would Skyrocket the most. Both would be Top 10 Players ever!
    Just think, in that scenario, Malone would not only be the NBA’s 2nd All Time Leading Scorer, but he’d be a Two Time Champion with at least one Finals MVP award. While Stockton, who is the All Time NBA Leader to both Assists AND Steals would also be a 2 Time NBA Champion!! Try to think about them all time had this happened. Had Jordan not been so Dominant.
    Had Jordan not been so Dominant, those teams would have beaten the Bulls, and would be seen so Differently. People would be saying “Well, yeah, Jordan lost 4 times in the Finals and only won twice, but look at the Great Stacked teams he went up against!”
    But……that didn’t happen. Why? Because…….Jordan Proved to be Too Damn Dominant. He did not allow players to become Great on his watch. No Excuses needed for him. 6-0………..think about that.
    Compare that to Lebron. Too many apologists say “Well yeah, he only won 3 times, but look at the Great Stacked teams he went up against!” But would anyone be saying that those teams were so great if lebron had been too Dominant (like Jordan) and beaten those teams? No! Because had lebron won, those players all Time Ranking does not get elevated like it is now. Everyone would say Curry is a Choker. They’d say Durant couldn’t win with Westbrook and Harden, or with Curry and Thompson. Those teams and players would be seen the same way they see the teams that lost to the Bulls. Jordan and his Bulls teams would have defeated all the Teams lebron lost to. Jordan would have turned those GS teams into the NBA's version of the 90's Buffalo Bills.
    It’s as if…...people want to give less credit to Jordan BECAUSE of how truly Dominant he was. He made it look too easy. They want to penalize him for it, and elevate others that ALLOWED other teams and Players to BECOME Great. Jordan didn’t allow that to happen……….the only players Jordan made better were his own teammates, not the opposing players. Lebron on the other hand, elevated players on the other teams by losing to them..............think about that........
    BTW, had Jordan gone 2-4, would he be seen as the GOAT? Because some want to say Lebron is the GOAT.......even though he has only won 3 Titles and is 3-6 in the Finals.

In the Bulls 6th Finals against the Jazz, that Jazz team swept the 62 win Lakers that had Kobe and Shaq. That's how good the competition was back then.

You are absolutely right to say that Jordan came up against some of the greatest teams in NBA history. People who weren't there are always quick to criticise, not knowing the type of extraordinary talent that graced the league during the time he played. It was NEVER EASY for Michael....yet he prevailed. That shows quality...and that type of quality shone amidst a league at the time LOADED with quality.

      That exact argument could be made in favour of lebron having to get through warriors and spurs. If the Utah jazz and New York Knicks of the 90s are legendary than that isnt helping your argument...here is a trivia question...how many hall of famers did Jordan face in the finals in his 6 title runs vs how many did lebron have to deal with in his 9 title runs

    • @ivanzagorac5690
      @ivanzagorac5690 5 лет назад

      @Tod Wilkinson your assessment of who is and isnt a hall of Famer is nuts, it's a good thing you dont get to vote. I count 10 hall of Famers in 6 finals for jordan and worthy and magic were washed up in 91. As for the east lebron had to get through some great celtics teams with 3 hall of Famers...if you dont think pierce is a hall of Famer you should probably stop arguing basketball cause that's one of the dumbest claims I have ever heard. He had to play some great pistons teams which he single handedly beat to get to the finals. He had to play some pretty good pacer and bulls teams as well so no its not true he had s ticket to the finals every season. The conference finals each year had formidable opponents. Lebron was a favourite to win in the finals 3 out of 9 times...and in most cases a heavy underdog. Jordan was a heavy favourite in 5 of the 6 finals and even money in 98 so the finals records need some context. Ginobili is a bonafide hall of Famer and if he wasnt on the spurs, no way they are as successful as they were. • @Milordvega
    @Milordvega 5 лет назад +175

    TREMENDOUS video. I am a pretty old fan myself, and I remember it all. Those 90's teams Jordan beat were great teams.
    In my opinion, the Bulls had the biggest problems with the Jazz in 1997 and 1998 Finals:
    In 1997, Utah was that close to winning Games 5 (MJ's flu game) and 6 (the MJ assist to Steve Kerr for winning shot) to take the title in 1997 instead of Chicago.
    And in 1998, it really should have gone to Game 7, but with the Bulls trailing by 3 off a Stockton three-pointer, MJ had a final 43 seconds for the ages to win Game 6 and the back to back threepeat, avoiding what would have been a Game 7 in Utah with Scottie Pippen hobbling.
    Karl Malone is an 11-time 1st team All-NBA forward and John Stockton is the all-time leader in assists and steals. How could that Utah team be "weak" competition? Going to the 1998 Finals, they eliminated teams led by legends like Olajuwon, Barkley and Drexler; David Robinson and Duncan; and Shaq and Kobe (the Lakers were even swept in the West final). Weak competition?! Really?
    Those 1997 and 1998 Jazz, 1993 Suns and 1996 Sonics... just powerful teams. Among the best teams in history not to win the title. They all lost to Jordan and the Bulls.
    MJ was the real deal. The GOAT.

      Of course, "worse performance" for MJ still meant topnotch defense and leading the Bulls in scoring in all 6 games. He shot poorly in the clinching Game 6 (was it like 5-17) but still had 22 points and a near triple double. And an iconic image came after the final buzzer: him collapsing to the floor in tears and holding on tightly to the ball. That title was his first without his dad. It was for him.

      what about the illegal defense back in the day? Where u r not allowed to do zone defense or attempt double team etc?

    • @sebclot9478
      @sebclot9478 5 лет назад +2

      Basically, you had to play man to man defense. Zoning was illegal, but you could double or triple team a player. However you could only double or triple team the ball handler. You couldn't double team players away from the ball.
      . There were a few specific provisions that spelled out what was and wasn't legal. For example, if the man you are defending was beyond the three point circle at the top of the arc, you the defender could not drop any lower than the free throw line. If you were guarding a shooter in corner three point position on the weak side. You couldn't enter the lane. The exception would be leaving your man to double team or moving to help against a ball handler making an offensive move. There were quite a few specific principles that defined what was and wasn't legal, but it wasn't super complicated once you understood it.
      It generally wasn't enforced in the back court which allowed zoning during a full court press and it wasn't enforced during a double team or dribble penetration to allow the three weak side defenders to guard 4 offensive players.
      The rules did change subtly over the years as well. For example, the original three point rule required that if all the weakside offensive players were above the three point arc, all their defender had to be above the free throw line. In the late 90's that was changed to allow the corner three rule to apply to one defender, allowing him to drop down to the weak side block. Also, the three point position rules didn't exist all all prior to the implementation of the three point line in 1980.
      The first illlegal defense call drew no penalty. The shot clock would reset and the offensive team would take the ball out from the side. From the second illegal defense call onward, the offensive team was awarded a one shot technical foul, and would retain possession with the shot clock resetting. They were team technicals and did not apply towards the ejection limit.
      There was also a time limit to how long a player could be out of position. For example if your guy was beyond the arc, you could drop below the free throw line briefly, but you had to get back to you man almost immediately after. So it wasn't called instantly if you found yourself out of position momentarily. I think the threshold was three seconds, but it applied universally, not just in the lane like today.
      Was also a little known offensive companion rule illegal offense. In order to prevent offenses from abusing the illegal defense rule by sending everyone out beyond the three point line to clear the lane, I don't remember the specifics. I think you had to have one or two players below foul line level. I any saw it called once in the 15 years it was in place.

    I thought the best team Jordan and Bulls faced in the 90s were the 1996 Seattle Supersonics, then the 1993 Phoenix Suns, then the 1997 Utah Jazz, then the 1992 Portland Trail Blazers, and finally ththose Knicks teams of the early 90s, and the Pacers teams of the late 90s. Magic and the Lakers in 1991 really should not have been there, the matchup everyone wanted to really see at the time was the Blazers vs Bulls. Yeah Magic vs Michael was hyped, and then a big let down, but as a kid back then I really wanted to see Portland vs Chicago over Magic vs Mike, and we got Bulls-Blazers in 1992, but the Blazers in 1992 weren't as good as 1991. Plus Jordan knew he was an NBA champion at that point, and was mentally unstoppable in the Finals, but it would have been an open book in 1991 if the Bulls and Blazers met. Yes that Phoenix team was really good, and they looked poised to win it all in 1993. Most people were not picking Jordan and the Bulls, just because of the difficulty of winning 3 in a row, especially when the Bulls were the road team.

You didn't even mention Perkins, a 7 footer that could stretch out to 28 feet and knock down a 3. @johnyb9519 5 лет назад +8

      Sonics were a better team. GP on Jordan is overplayed. Bulls were up 3-0, so they relaxed a bit, Jordans' back was aching (which is why he lost weight during the next summer) and Sonics packed one of the meanest help defenses I've ever seen. That said, if you watch the games, Jordan was rarely, if ever, forced to take shots he didnt want, which was miracle in itself against that epic defense. He would always manage to get past the defenders and shoot relatively open, but he missed 7-8 shots overall that he'd usually be making. He bricked hard, for Jordans' standards, on games 4 and 6, and they won game 6 anyway.

    This argument worked both ways.
    It was and still is a generational issue [most of the time] : younger fans believed everything before them was bad; older fans believed everything before and after their growing up years is bad.
    I was born in 1970 and the false premises, half baked truth or bad memories was oftenly used by "old heads" in the 1970s, 1980s... Until now!
    The sad truth is : life in general or basketball isn't getting better or worse. It's changing : rules, strategies, tendencies, coaching, training differed. It's different plain and simple.
    It's sad, but in the 1980s, Wilt Chamberlain and multiple former stars were saying how : "it was better in our time"; "we were smarter"; "we had better fundamentals", "it was tougher and meaner"; "we didn't played for money."
    Wilt Chamberlain stated in 1989 and 1997 that if he played in Jordan's era, he would had scored 70 PPG! While leading the league in blocks and rebounds. Jerry West agreed on that point!
    It was heard every week on Roy Firestone's show... The problem, people forget. They don't remember.
    And look. There are 1990s kids that will repeat the same old fallacies and premises I despised in the first place. No, NBA stars weren't better back then. No, NBA stars aren't better now. They développés different skills in order to dominate their basketball era.
    Old vs new.

The NBA was the sport of the 90’s, and the reason why is because the talent was spread out all over the league instead of having 2 or 3 teams with all the great players like in today’s NBA. I believe this is hurting the game and a main reason why the NBA is dying.

    • @dynamic6645
      @dynamic6645 3 года назад +1

      Let's take a look at the toughest teams MJ had to go through to earn his titles in the east. the 1990s Knicks had one hall of famer Patrick Ewing a great defender but never in the conversation about great offensive centers. that was about it, Ewing had a bunch of role players. Oakley, Rivers, Starks, Mark Jackson, Xavier Mcdaniel, Greg Anthony, Anthony Mason, none of these players are hall of famers. the 1990s Knicks were great on defense but their offense was always near the bottom of the league throughout the 1990s. The 1991 Pistons: that year the Pistons would have gave MJ and his Bulls a fight if Isiah Thomas had not broke his wrist, Thomas missed 32 games during the season and 1 game during the playoffs to do his broken wrist that affected him in the playoffs. During the 1990s the guards of the Celtics, the Pistons, the Lakers were old and injured, also affected by the expansion overtaken by the younger teams. clearly these were not the same caliber teams of the 1980s. the 1991 Celtics started the season 29-5 before Bird and later Mchale went down. was this because the 1991 Celtics were such a great team ? No, this Celtics team would have not competed in the 1980s. they got a 56-26 record despite injuries of Bird and Mchale because expansion teams boosted up their win column. If Bird and Mchale didnt go down with injuries they would have won the 1991 title. the 1991 championship was ripe for the taking because of the expansion teams. The Indiana Pacers: when your best player is a 3 point shooter that plays little defense, you know you aint gonna make much of a dent in the playoffs. Reggie Miller is an outside shooter, a hall of famer, Chris Mullin is also a hall of famer and an outside shooter but not a good defender. you can say this was a cake walk for the Bulls. The Cavs: there were no hall of famers and this was the same Cavs team that lost to the bulls in 1994 without MJ. The Magic: one of the few good teams MJ faced in the east. Shaq was a legit big man, grant was a great inside defender and rebounder, Hardaway was a very good guard before his injuries, they beat the Bulls in 1995. in 1996 Bulls faced the Magic again but this time Bulls had Rodman. Grant was fighting an elbow injury the entire playoffs. the Bulls again caught a break and the Magic are left without their best interior defender and 2nd leading rebounder. unfortunately for the Magic in 1996 Grant was injured in the 1st game and didnt play the remainder of the series. it was Shaq and Penny vs MJ Pippen Rodman, The Bulls won in 1996. now MJ's competition in the finals: the 1991 Lakers were not even a little bit close to the 1980s Showtime Lakers. no Kareem arguably a top 5 player of all time, a huge presence in the low post, no Micheal Cooper who is considered by many the greatest defender in nba history, in their place there was Sam Perkins a 7 footer that played more behind the 3 point line than he did in the paint and he was a labeled as a soft defender in his career, he flopped and didnt play much defense. an intimidating front line, they were not. despite all this, Magic would have had a chance to beat the Bulls if James Worthy didnt suffer a high sprain ankle against the Blazers, Worthy no longer had quickness or lateral movement for the remainder of the playoffs, the injury affected him throughout the finals, Byron Scott also went down with an injury late in the
      finals against the Bulls and couldnt play in game 5, Worthy also missed game 5. so basically it was Bulls vs Magic and Magic put up a good fight than MJ would have put if the roles were reversed.
      1992 : Blazers: they had one hall of famer: Clyde Drexler and umm... well yeah thats all they had, not much competition at all. blazers also had no inside presence to speak of, a recurring theme in mjs finals matchups, easy ring for mj.
      1993:Pheonix Suns: Barkley is a great hofer but he only had KJ on his team, a decent player but no hofer, again no post defense on the suns. tallest player for them was Tom Chambers 6'10" one of the softest defenders of all time. this isnt even the best team barkley played on, the 1985 and 1986 sixers with Dr J, Malone, Cheeks, and Barkley would have wiped the floor with 1993 Bulls and Suns. 1990s teams sucked, the 1993 Suns may have won 62 games against the expansion league but they would struggle to a .500 record in the 80s.
      1996 sonics they had hofer Gary Payton a great defender and good scorer, they also had Shawn Kemp a player that would show up fat and out of shape at summer camps. so the sonics had a good defender and a lazy underachiever. Sonics had no inside defensive presence. MJ is free to cake walk to the basket all series. Sonics won 64 games, but its easy to win that number of games in a chump expansion league, they wouldnt have hit .500 in 1986, can you say "no competition".
      1997 Utah Jazz: many jockers point to the finals against the Jazz as evidence the Bulls would have beaten the 1980s teams. well in fact the Jazz did have 2 hall of famers: John Stockton and Karl Malone who are also 2 of the 50 greatest players in nba history. lets compare:we have Malone Stockton of the 1980s vs Malone Stockton of the 1990s, I'll call this one a draw. at the forward position jazz had thurl bailey a 6'11" powerful and quick forward. the 1990s Jazz had Bryon Russell who didnt even average double figures in ppg for his career. Bailey was a better scorer, better low post defender, better rebounder, averages more assists per game than Bryon Russell. Bailey wins hands down. at center the 1980s Jazz had Mark Eaton who is 7'4", the greatest shot blocker in the modern basketball era. Eaton once averaged 5.6 blocks per game in a single season still a record that stands. all time he averages 3.5 blocks per game wich is also a record that still stands today. the 1990s Jazz had Greg Ostertag, or maybe POSTERtag. the 1980s Jazz would have destroyed MJ and his Bulls. why ? because the 1980s Jazz wich mark Eaton in the lineup gave the 1980s Jordan fits. from 1985 to 1993 the Jazz with mark eaton were 9-7 against mjs Bulls. there would be no waltzing into the lane for MJ against Eaton and Bailey like he did to Ostertag and Bryon Russell. the 1987 Jazz took the LA Lakers to 7 games, you think the 1997 Jazz could do that ? the 1980s Jazz would have destroyed the 1990s Jazz. so we see again, a weak inside presence of the Utah Jazz wich gives MJ 2 more easy rings.

      @@dynamic6645 I’m not quite sure what your point is. If your point is to show that the talent in the 90’s NBA was spread out throughout the league then that’s exactly what I said too. If you’re trying to imply that MJ didn’t beat anyone during the Bulls run then you need to do more research. Also you are implying that the ‘91 Bulls only beat the Pistons is because Isaiah was hurt but fail to recognize that the previous year, if not for a migraine, Pippen would have been a factor in the final game of the series, and the Bulls may have very well won so if you’re going to talk about injuries, they can work both ways. The NBA sucks today and you can look no further than last year’s finals. How many people watched the “goat”, and the most popular team in the NBA play for the title? 5 million! How many people watched Jordan’s final series with the Bulls? 40 million. Clearly the NBA has lost the favor of Americans.

    Brilliant video mate, loved 80’s and 90’s basketball. More pure than what’s out there today. All the Lebron fans saying how many hall of famers he’s had to go against when they haven’t even been introduced into the hall of fame and probably never will is getting annoying. Those teams Jordan played against were well balanced because they didn’t create super teams then

    I remember watching basketball in the 90-s. There were very many GREAT players - but when I watched Bulls vs whatever other team game - it was clear that MJ was in his own league. Not that the others were bad. He was simply so good!

    Best breakdown I have seen! Well Done! The media has simply forgotten how good the league was back then! or even how great MJ was! This whole James VS MJ debate is ridiculous! MJ dominated in every finals! You cant say the same for Lebron! nor his competition!

    THANK YOU for this video! I'm so sick of people trying to make this claim, because they think this era has more stars than in the 90's. They always want to say MJ was being guarded by Jeff Hornacek disrespecting a man who averaged 15pts per game, shot 50% from the field and 44% from the 3pt line! People also forget about the real second best SG in the league after 92 Mitch Richmond!
