Hello (again) @ ChrisRuppOfficial ! Nightwish fans here, your reaction just appeared on our radar..
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2013 at Wacken Open Air festival, in front of a 82k+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I could see, you felt the power of this song and appreciate all the key elements of a Nightwish show: the intricate composition, the high level of musicianship of all band members, the stellar vocals and charisma of Floor Jansen, our Dutch metal queen. Of course, your performing experience helped you a lot in understanding that. Welcome among us :)
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
Hope you'll continue this journey with us, so I'll drop here a list of songs with the current lineup of the band you may like:

Here is the gist of basically every Nightwish live performance you will ever see: Emppu and his coronas, Tuomas and his wine, Marko and Emppu playing a random kids game, Floor singing her ass off, Emppu throwing endless guitar picks in the crowd, Jukka destroying his drums, Floor singing her ass of, Emppu running around the stage like a madman bc if he stands still then you can clearly see that he is a FOOT shorter than Floor when she has her heels on, Troy playing instruments that NO ONE can name, Floor singing her ass off, Marko trying very hard NOT to laugh at Emppu, Tuomas trying to keep up with Floor's Dutch Windmills, and Floor singing her ass off. In all seriousness, they are all at the top of the talent tree. Each one alone could lead a band into greatness let alone all five of them. One of the best live performances of all time. Not only musically but staging and production is unmatched.

Those strings are not synthesised - they are the London Philharmonic Orchestra with London's Metro Voices Choir and London's Young Musicians Children's' Choir, recorded onto a backing track which the band have to stay in perfect synch with, which is done by Jukka (drummer) having a click track in his in-ears. Everyone else synchs to him.
This song, along with almost all Nightwish's material, is composed by Tuomas (on keyboards) although Floor re-wrote the ending on this shortly after her emergency replacement mid-tour (yes, THIS tour), from the original version, which she remembered enjoying from when she'd opened for them on a previous tour with her previous band. You can hear in this how well she did it and to retain harmony and tempo with the backing track - no mean feat!
She did not actually become a member of Nightwish until almost 2 months after this performance - she was still performing as touring stand-in at the time of this concert, although it later emerged that she had been offered and accepted the permanent position in the hotel bar after The Sauna Open Air festival at Tampere, Finland on June 8th, a few weeks before this performance, but had to complete her contractual obligations with her own band, ReVamp, before it was announced (their 2nd and final album was released between the end of the tour, two gigs after this, and the announcement).
Her joining the band has been described from both sides as a homecoming.
When you hear her harmonising with Marco (on bass here) and Troy (not featured in this song, but the other non-Finnish member of Nightwish, being an amazing vocalist and multi-instrumentalist from the UK with a particular love of Celtic instruments) you will hear why!

I've seen the beer swap out on a fan video, and the massive spit-take only avoided soaking Troy due to his rapid reaction!

      I would suggest getting some more Nightwish under the wings before attempting;
Greatest Show On Earth - should read up on the lyrics first and understand what the word means, or it's kinda cryptic.
Poet And The Pendulum - should research the song and the events leading up to it all - how the song came to be and what it means, as it's kinda deep.
But both of them later, when more familiar with it.

Nightwish is a Finnish band and here are the members currently:
    - Tuomas Holopainen - Keyboards & main composer/arranger - Finnish
    - Floor Jansen - Main Vocals - Dutch
    - Marco Hietala - Bass & Vocals - Finnish
    - Emppu Vuorinen - Guitarist - Finnish
    - Kai Hahto - Drums - Finnish (In the video you just watched it was still Jukka Nevalainen, he left as the drummer in 2014 and is now with the band's management team)
    - Troy Donockley - Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bouzouki, etc. - English
The backing tracks are recorded with the London Philarmonic full orchestra and choir, so not coming from the keyboards.
They had 2 previous singers Tarja Turunen 1996-2005 and Anette Olzon 2007-2012.
Best method for reacting to Nightwish that I figured from watching reactors and discovering them recently and exploring their catalog myself:
Keep the particularly long and complex songs listed below, if you have not watched them already, for after you have seen all the more standard ones from the 4 live shows mentioned in the numbered list:
    - Ghost Love Score (Wacken) 10 minutes
    - The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley) 14 minutes >>> Doing some research on the background story for this song is very important to be able to appreciate the meaning of the lyrics.
    - Greatest Show on Earth (Tampere) 21 minutes
1- Just do all the Wacken 2013 songs, they are all great.
2- Then the Wembley 2015 ones that are not part of the Wacken show.
3- Then the remaining songs from Tampere 2015 that were not in the previous 2 shows mentioned.
4- Then the older songs from Buenos Aires 2018 that were not in the previous 3 shows mentioned.
5- To see what they can do with a cover and if you like Marco's singing, watch their interpretation of Pink Floyd's High Hopes.
6- Then you can explore Floor's versatility with her band ReVamp's live performances of the songs Disdain at Graspop and Wild Card at Bloodstock.
7- And finally go in the deep end of the Floor talent pool by reacting to her performances on Beste Zangers in the order the episodes aired.
For the first 4 steps, you can alternate between shows, but I would recommend to still only take songs that are not performed in the previous shows mentioned, as they are ordered in audio quality from best to worst.
From watching a lot of reactions, in my opinion this is the most efficient order to discover the rabbit hole that is Nightwish and Floor Jansen.
That should keep you busy for a while. 😀

@@phillee2814 I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one, because I feel Nightwish's take on High Hopes eclipses the original, much as Johnny Cash's version of NIN's Hurt did. I saw High Hopes performed live by PF in '94. It was an awesome experience hearing this song live, and Gilmour's solo at the end was as close to a religious experience as I'm likely to have. But to me, the sum of the parts in Nightwish's version outweigh Floyd's version simply by virtue of Marco's stunning vocals. And Emppu's guitar work was spot on in the sense that he performed a very cool interpretation of the solo that didn't try to emulate Gilmour, but instead struck out on its own and blazed its own trail that was very tasty to the ears.

The clip was shot a few months after Floor jointed the band right in the middle of their US leg of the world tour. They asked her to join after tensions between the previous (Anette) vocalist and the rest of the band had rissen so high that they fired her. With close to a year still to go to complete the tour, and their next concert planned 2 day later they, needed a replacement fast. They called Floor because she had toured with them when she was part of the support bands"After Forever" and later "Revamp" on several occasions and they were quiet impressed by her vocals (who would not be?). She only had 2 days, including a flight from the Netherlands to the US, to learn the setlist and only had one rehearsal with the band a couple of hours before her first show and nailed it. Since they were making a documentary about the world-tour a lot of what happened was recorded. The documentary is called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" (ruclips.net/video/vhExkmWKMEU/видео.html )
As a next song to take a look at i would recommend their masterpiece "The poet and the pendulum" live at Wembley. Before you take a look at it i would recommend to take a look at the backstory of this song. This will make you appreciate it much more. here is the link ruclips.net/video/gbn9GczYBkw/видео.html

Yes to "Please Learn The Setlist In 48 Hours", but wait to do "The Poet And The Pendulum" until you know the band better and are more aware of the history and difficult background behind it.
It is hard enough on Tuomas that he has the sound tech shut of the vocals from his in-ears during the song, and other members of the band check up on him more than once during a performance. It is not to be taken lightly, but is, indeed, a masterpiece, and his catharsis of the situation behind it.

If you want to see more pyro then there is always Rammstein.🙂
Plus I would be very interested to see what you would think watching "Hypa hypa - Esqimo callboy".

I photographed a rock concert on a tiny stage with barely any "backstage" to speak of a few years back. One of the best experiences of my life, and probably the closest I've ever felt to music being "too loud." I think my ears are just lucky.

Some people looks more to the bang bang others to the bling bling but everything is part of the whole. So you focused more into the details of her outfit, pyrotechnics, lights, without diminishing their great talent as a band. And maybe people don't realized how hard it is "behind the music". I appreciate your comments from your perspective. Thanks.

Great reaction. I think you should do a few more from Wacken 2013, and then move to Wembley and Tampere 2015, to experience the more epic and impressive songs from Nightwish. As the others have already told, Floor is the 3. singer in, and in 2013 Floor did old songs, not writing for her, but she did make them her own. In the 2015 shows, she performed songs written for her, and Tuomas the song writer in most of their songs (Marco also writes), starts using Floor's incredible range and versatility - and her unique ability to add emotions in her singing and stage performance.
On the Decades tour in 2018 (album same name from Buenos Aires 2018) Floor really shines through the old songs also (Decades is a kind tour through Nightwish songs during 20 years. Their newest album is still only a studio album except for 1 song made live in an acoustic version during a promotion tour - but on this Album Tuomas through everything in creating an album especially for all 3 Nightwish singers (Floor, Marco and Troy) - and he finally managed to challenge Floor properly, which she loves, being the voice nerd she throughly are. The result are mind blowing - and still only in studio versions, while Nightwish are a true live band.
You could do a double session with the only one from the new album done live
How is the Heart, Human Nature (2019)
    &
How is the Heart, Planet rock radio (2020) - only Troy and Floor - but very impressive and Troy's face at the end is priceless. He calls Floor's voice "Stratospheric" - and that is spot on 👌 👍 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

They use in-ear monitors, I think you may be looking at the pyro devices and Emppu does have a 4 x 12 sideways on the stage for sustain and feedback, apart from being a beer and pick table. I didn't spot any wedges, may be wrong though.
Your audio levels are way low though compared to most YT videos, I did have to really crank it up but may be you wanted to stay well off any YT compression or the like.

Never gets old, seeing a reaction from an industry pro to thye force of nature that is Floor and Nightwish. Now, howzabout their polar opposite - Rammstein! Industrial metal band, all members were born and raised in East Germany before the wall fell. Their vocalist is a burly, muscular dude named Till Lindemann who has a gruff bass baritone. I don't think he has had any formal training, but hardly matters - he has awesome strange presence and the whole 6-man band has been together, unchanged, since 1994. Check out Du Hast from Paris 2012 ;-)

Most of the Nightwish Army will probably request a reaction to either "Poet and the Pendulum", or something similarly epic like "The Greatest Show on Earth". However if you start off with those three, you don't really see as much of the versatility. I feel it helps to break it up a little with a real banger in between. I'd recommend "Romanticide" or "Yours is an Empty Hope".

Either you removed my earlier comment or I forgot to push the comment button, but just to let you know, I was a bit disappointed since you said almost nothing about the composition, instrumentation & musicianship, which is something a music producer should also pay attention to. Commenting almost entirely just Floor's vocals is something a vocal coach / singing instructor would do.

The series was book-ended by Floor and Henk nicely, as the first song of the first episode was Floor singing "Vilja Lied" (in the original German) for Henk, and the final performance of the last episode (duets) was her performance with Henk of "Phantom".
She also sings in Latin, Finnish and Spanish (and I think I recall Italian) as well as Dutch and English of course, and additionally can speak Swedish and some Finnish (which she is working on). Those are just the ones I know about!

Thanks for following up on Floor Jansen/Nightwish. How can you not after watching Beste Zangers' Phantom of the Opera? lol
This was Floor's last performance with Nightwish for the Imaginaerum World Tour as she became only a fill-in after their singer, Anette Olzon, departed from the band on September 29, 2012 giving Floor only 48 hours to learn the set before her debut in Seattle, Washington on October 1, 2012. At this time she was also recovering from burnout. But, it was written in the universe because she nailed it!!
Safe to say the Nightwish Army is upon you....
Most of the next requests are going to be from this same venue (Wacken 2013) so be sure to include it in the name when searching for a video.
    Next on the agenda...
    "Romanticide" or "Ever Dream".
Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed. 😊❤🤘🤘

There were two further performances in the Imaginaerium world tour after this one, at the Alcatraz festival (Belgium) and M'era Luna (back into Germany again).
Emppu has unplugged Floor's in-ears precisely once, earlier in this concert during "I Want My Tears Back", which can be seen on the video along with her fiddling around to get them plugged back in and the cable tucked out of his reach afterwards - and the stare-down she gave him on the way back across the stage. As she stands 20cm taller than him (183cm to his 163cm) even without her heels (so probably a full foot taller in costume), it is quite an amusing confrontation!
After her retaliation of substituting apple juice (which he loathes) for the contents of one of his beer bottles - resulting in a massive spit-take which almost soaked Troy - they called a truce. He is still the court jester of the band though :-)

At first I was confused about the orchestra parts. But I know now that it's not the synth, it's a real orchestra (backtrack). They can't have a real orchestra during the festial like this, so I think it's a good choice to have some backing tracks and other live instruments. It would not be the same if they used some synth to imitate orchestra and choir sound.
