What I really love about Floor's version is that she uses her voice in so in many different ways in this song. Especially the ending where she does that long operatic note and then switches to chest voice and belts those last notes out, is so impressive. It's really amazing what she can do with her voice!
She has a reaction video to this song in her channel where she explains what she does vocally and why she uses different vocal styles in different parts of this song, why the ending is sung differently compared to the original version etc... I recommend to watch that video.

Tarja's version was last played/sung in 2005. This version by Floor is 2013. How about something more recent - I can 100% assure you she has got better and better. As well as many years at the Dutch Rock Achademy and classical training she has never stopped learning more technique. She also started her professional career at 16 with After Forever - one of the earliest & best European symphonic metal bands

@@bobcieslinski Floor's training is actually a bit broader then most. She started with the Rock Academy while she was working in her first band. that was a new program at the time and the Musical theater and Classical people they brought in to help, snatched her and provided extra training. You can really see that training and all the hard work she put and puts in with her ease in switching styles and tambor within phrases.

I adore this version of the song, it's my absolute favorite.
I feel that Floor has the perfect mix of classical and metal style of singing, she can switch styles and registers so quickly, I love Tarja's voice in many of their old songs, however, her using an operatic style 100% of the time isn't really my thing, I get tired easily while listening to her (sorry, Tarjans!) I love the fact that Floor's voice is so flexible, she can sing pop, metal, ópera, she can sing super super high, and growl really deep, she can do everything! In many languages as well, I might sound totally biased but that's how I feel about the comparison of Tarja and Floor

The biggest challenge for a group that uses tracks is to meticulously control everyone’s timing and stay in sync with the orchestral and choral tracks. In some respects it’s significantly more difficult than just rocking out live. There’s no place for any sloppiness or margin for error. And to pull it off you need a group of highly motivated and dedicated musicians whose skills are on par with a symphony instrumentalist. And Nightwish is probably the best example out there at pulling this sort of show off. A Nightwish concert has as much in common with legitimate music theater as it does with a rock/metal concert.

He plays 18 instruments (that was the last number I have read about, may be more today), has a beautiful folk voice and even succeeded in replacing Marco for some songs (not for all, for some of them you need Marco's strong prominent rock voice, here Floor jumped in and sang "for two persons"). And he is such a kind, affectionate and humorous person.

If you drop this in a timeline on top of the version you did with Tarja, they match exactly due to the fact they’re played to the same orchestral backing track. There is a difference in how they’re mixed (the choir isn’t as evident in this version), obviously each band member has evolved in the interim but the biggest difference is what Floor brings to it (as others here have mentioned).

Excellent reaction and analysis. Tuomas tweaks the composition to fit the abilities and styles of the specific vocalist. One thing to notice is the ending operatic flourish. Floor tried it in rehearsal and the rest of the band said, "Do it."

And now you know "The Note" !!!!
Floor Jansen is a lyrical soprano, with a range of more than 5 octaves (Eb2 to F5) so far...
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. And She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.
The Spell is now Cast !!!

Can there be anyone left who has not reacted to GLS. Tuomas himself thought Creek Mary’s Blood and GLS were the ‘epics’ from the album. Tarja’s renditions quite properly fit that description. BUT! BUT, BUT, Floor’s Wacken GLS just takes this to another level. Floor, at this concert , had just been formally admitted as a full member of the band. The whole band were on fire ‘ this is now Nightwish for ever more’. Floor, without being big headed about it ( see her acknowledgement of Jukka and the band at the end) simply let it be known that she now owned the Nightwish song book.

    Hi Bob.
    I really enjoy your videos.
Great that you commented so positive about the guitar solo, it wasn't shredding and fast, but you recognized the emotion put into it.
This made me think that you really should react to Ayreon. Preferably the song "The Day That The World Breaks Down".
Even though I'm not a patreon, I highly recommend you to do so. I'm sure you'll be amazed.
    Have a nice day.

There are major differences between Floor and Tarja, and yes, they both are immensely talented, but for me, the biggest difference is seen at the end of the song. Floor immediately points to Jukka, recognizing his amazing contributions to this masterpiece. I alway felt Tarja wanted to be the center of the attention, yet Floor seems to defer to the other geniuses around her.. They are a tighter band, they share and enjoy each other as they play, and none of them fight for the spotlight, yet they each share a portion of it. This chemistry is so attractive, so enjoyable, and I saw it from the very beginning of Floor's tenure with the band. She owns this song, in my book, and I just can't watch the previous version without feeling it is a puzzle with missing pieces. At this point, in concerts, Emppu comes over to "touch fingers" (like ET) with Floor after she "hits the note" that Tarja never sang. EPIC!

This the version of GLS where the brilliance of Tuomas' composing really shines. And Floor Jansen is the reason why more and more reactors, musicians, music fans, song writers, bands, and people all over the world wakes up and realize that they all have missed out of something big.
    EDIT:
Amazing reaction. You, Bob, know your music.
Welcome to the biggest rabbit hole there is.
And yes. Floor Jansen is classically trained. And she uses her training in every style she sings with and without Nightwish. And she Growls like a Death Metal Vocalist tooo.. And everything between. We're lucky to be alive in the same era as her. She's the best female singer alive at this time. Period.

Your question of how different it is, well there is a whole video where floor talks about the evolution of just ghost love score. Short version, she was brought in to finish the tour, had to learn the set list in 48 hrs. Another video just on that. But she did so well they hired her . The difference in how the songs are performed kinda went like this. Floor : Thomas what u think if I try.... Thomas: sure. Floor : but what if I try.... Thomas: sure, let's see how it works. He backed her experiments with the songs. Wakken was definitely different than earlier recorded version of g.l.s. , before the interlude she was more reserved. At wakken she engaged the crowd in the hey, hey chant. Showing how more comfortable she was in nightwish . And Impu's pranks back and forth with her show how much they all bonded.

Not just entertaining to listen and watch but they have fun, as a family, doing it! Metal IS family! All the links between bands - Floor and Simone (Epica) being friends and having the same vocal coaches (Amanda Sommerville was one - married to After Forever's Sander Gommans!), Simone married to the keyboard player, Oliver Palotai, from Kamelot (Epica took their name from a Kamelot album), Mark Jansen in bands with Floor and then founding Epica, Alyssa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy and Elize Ryd (of Amaranthe) performed with Nightwish in Denver because they were touring with Kamelot when Anette (Nightwish singer#2) went to hospital..... but wait! There's more!.... to be continued!......

A musician you should react to next should be Guilhem Desq - Cicatrics - Hurdy Gurdy (this is the live version) then the soundtrack version has a slightly different sound, so if you want to react to both of them to hear the difference. then react to Cowboys from Hell, Omen, Visions, Break Your Crank, Le chateau abandonne, La libellule et le baobab, A l'Abordage, Le chateau magique, and Jusqu'en haut de la montagne. All of these songs have such different sounds and tones to them I think you will really enjoy his music.

Greetings from Nightwish Army, Palm Springs, CA! Here to assist you learning the names of the entire band of top tier musicians: 1st singer is Tarja (pron: Tar-Yuh), til 2005. Anette Olzen, 2007-2012, then came Floor Jansen. Keyboardist and composer Tuomas Holopainen (pron: TOO-oh-Moss), guitar slayer, Emppu Vourinen (pron: EMM-Poo), the ultimate rock star, Marko Hietala (pron: HEE-ah-Tallah), is a classically trained guitarist, *bassist, songwriter and fantastic vocalist both solo and in harmony (you will hear more from him to come!). He left the band in 2021 and was replaced by Jukka Koskinen (pron: YOO-KAH). And on drums here, is Jukka Nevalainen, (pron: YOO-KAH) until 2015 when he was replaced by his mentor, Kai Hahto. And there is a 6th member, not seen in every song until 2021, when Marko left and he took on all of the harmonies and backing vocals...multi-instrumentalist, Troy Donockley.

Keep going down the Nightwish rabbit hole. You will never be disappointed. Another tight metal band you may also like is Epica, a Dutch symphonic metal band fronted by Simone Simons - another goddess. In fact, Simone and Floor are long time friends, and both have been classically trained. In the Epica Retrospect concert Floor duets with Simone in several songs: Sancta Terra and Stabat Mater Dolorosa. For Epica, I would start with Sancta Terra, then look at Design Your Universe from the same Retrospect concert.
As for other NW songs, Gabriel's list will serve you well, but I am partial to Song of Myself. Also, if you are a Pink Floyd fan don't forget to try an older performance of them doing High Hopes which was their tribute to PF. It was done during the last concert Tarja was with them. It was very emotional for them, and the emotion is palpable in their performance.
