Hello Nick Forell ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

I discovered Nightwish in early 2019....I heard this epic song....and wondered where in the world have I been? I have been into the heavier side of rock music since the mid 1960's...when I was a young boy! I can listen to Nightwish no matter what I am feeling like, and they cheer me up!

I love to watch people just beginning their Nightwish journey. It's like discovering them all over again. I have liked and subscribed. You have so much ahead of you. A composer and keyboardist who is often called "The Metal Mozart", three great singers, amazingly talented instrumentalists and, most importantly, a group of extremely dedicated performers who always work together for the good of the song. No showboating in this group, just everyone working together, and enjoying the work.

@@andyjohnson6161 That's the main reason why I mentioned that "most" of the band was from Finland. Didn't mean to offend by not specifically naming him. Especially since I have met him on two occasions. A very jovial and talented fellow. In my haste, I erroneously grouped the Netherlands in with the Nordic states when their neighbor, Denmark is Nordic and not the Netherlands. I knew the UK was not Nordic though.

Nice Floorgasm dude! One of the most incredible and technically master of her instrument, this performance, #13 of 15 on the set list demonstrates her versatility of vocal styles. I don't consider myself a Nightwish fan like the majority of the folks you'll find here. I'm really a fan of Floor's and her solo projects, which, after seeing her solo performances from her 2019 appearance on the Dutch tv show Beste' Zangers solidified my fandom of Floor and she introduced me to Nightwish. She is a phenomenal woman, completely down to earth, very intelligent, heavily interested in Nature and the Earth, loves to recharge her batteries walking or rinding in the forest with her giant dog.

I remember the first time I heard this song. I was immediately hooked with the time signature changes and key changes even before the vocals started. Once Floor did the first verse I was in awe. Also, I was so angry that the US music industry keeps amazing bands like this from being more well known. They are so versatile in their music while at same time you always know a Nightwish song when you hear it. Just sit back and enjoy the ride! 🤘
I'm not sure that is wholly the case any more than it is in the UK. The main problem with Nightwish it that their songs are so long and they know that themselves. It's still three minutes max if you want to hit the airwaves. Then comes the question 'how do you classify them?' There are few 'metal' radio stations and in any case they aren't really 'metal' anyway, it's more complex than that. And then, how much do they want it anyway? My understanding is that Tuomas Holopainen isn't keen to pursue non-metal fans. They certainly don't employ radio pluggers to the best of my knowledge and if you don't do that these days the chances of ending up being played there are zero.

Nice reaction. You just saw Floor Jansen Killing it in the 13th song of the set list of this legendary Wacken Open Air concert 2013. On that 3rd of August everything in the universe aligned and it resulted in one of the best concerts ever recorded. I know it sounds pretentious, but go check it out and you'll see I am right. Nightwish makes symphonic metal and this song is a great example of that, it's very melodic but they also have way heavier and more chunky riffed metal songs. Floor does it all from full operatic to death growls and the bass player can sing also. For a different taste of Nightwish, check out Romanticide from this same concert. Enjoy your explorer journey into their catalogue, we'll be right there with you

Great reaction! I encourage you to continue on this musical journey - Nightwish is a very deep rabbit hole, where every song is different with unexpected twists and turns. Virtuoso musicians, a genius songwriter (Tuomas, the keyboard player whom many call the "metal Mozart" is a master of emotion and melody), and the best lead singer alive today (Floor can sing anything, from operatic highs to full metal growls) - and wait until you hear bassist Marco sing - one of the best metal voices of all time (especially when he sings harmony with Floor - it is pure gold). I don't think I can say this about any other band, but I've never heard a bad song from them (at least not live with Floor). I encourage you to follow Gabriel's list. I also highly recommend some of my own favorite live performances to you (I'd stick to live tracks as Nightwish is one of the best live bands of all time): (From Wacken 2013): Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, Amaranth, Song Of Myself, Last Ride Of The Day, Ever Dream; (From Wembley 2015): 7 Days To The Wolves, Yours Is An Empty Hope, Nemo, Elan, My Walden, While Your Lips Are Still Red, Shudder Before The Beautiful, The Poet And The Pendulum; (From Tampere 2015): Sleeping Sun, The Islander; (From Buenos Aires 2018): I Want My Tears Back, Dead Boys Poem, Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean; (From Tampa): Sahara; (From Hellfest 2022): Tribal, How's The Heart.

One thing is common in Nightwish songs. To the very last moment it IS building somewhere.
Yes the build up was phenomenal and well executed
"Write a lyric for the song only you can understand" (Elàn - Nightwish) can pretty much sum up a lot of Tuomas lyrics ;)
The general concept can be clear (and I mean, here it's stated in the title: it's a score about a "Ghost Love"), but then for the actual interpretation you need to dig a lot more, to get used to Tuomas imaginary (the Child, the Beast, the Siren, the Ocean, the Childhood/Innocence, etc) and put there in context (listening more of their stuff, especially starting from their older songs can help building such "vocabulary"), and even then, some things will remain up for everyone to interpret them as they wish :)

Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples:

Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in these years. I saw them live at Wembley in November 2022 and it was the most amazing experience. To hear more from them, I suggest you follow Gabriel's list or pick and mix from it. I have followed Nightwish for some time now and have just about every Nightwish recording, live and studio and not a single track I don't like.

They are so good! Its been so fun
She is a Siren, an Angel or maybe the Devil (joking, don't believe in both) But she is amazing. I was at this show and the whole concert was a once in a live time kinda thing. One of those magical nights, where everything just falls into the right place. Most of the crowd hadn't seen her with Nightwish, because she was replacing the previous singer during their world tour and this was basicly the first show they did in central Europe after that replacement during the US leg of the Tour. We were just in awe, all of us.

For something heavier check out Romanticide (Live Wacken 2013), Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean (Live Buenos Aires 2018), Shudder Before the Beautiful (Live Wembley 2015). Basically you can't go wrong with anything from the Wacken show in 2013 - the stars were aligned that night it seems. For something different see their cover of Phantom of the Opera live from Amsterdam 2022.

I lost some interest with Nightwish after Tarja got out. But back then when Floor became to the band, GOSH i reconnect instantly! I love their style with her vocals. Also the original versión is My Favorite, but Floor makes this song even more epic.
That crowd is 82,000+ strong. If you think you might have their music figured out, you might be surprised! Each song is different from the one you heard before! Also, they are best heard live! Enjoy the Nightwish journey!

Your instincts and feel about the Nordic vibes was correct. The band is Finnish, singer Floor is Dutch and multi-instrumentalist Troy is British. Tuomas (keys, composer, lyricist) uses folk things many times in his songs and this was no different (after interlude, when the band came back). Nightwish is very versatile, so there are all kinds of surprises waiting for you. This was epic fantasy movie score. They have an unmistakable Nightwish sound but stylistically they go all over the place.

The great Floor Jansen... Hallowed be her name. Symphonic Goddess. Yuss! I knew someone would recommend Nightwish. You should watch her duet with Henk Poort doing Phantom of the Opera. My favourite version is the one they perform on Beste Zangers 2019. And that's because you don't get the background noise from the audience and you can clearly hear the whole performance. She is a stunning vocalist. She has a very commanding presence.
You're going to get tons of Nightwish fans showing up (and rightfully so, your reactions are always great) - but I'll make one big suggestion. You WILL want to get into their 2015 Wembley performance of The Poet and The Pendulum, but you should build up to it. It's a very heavy piece with deep emotional meaning to Tuomas (keyboardist/composer of the band), which I think you in particular would have some great insight into.
You should check out their song The Islander live from Tempere first, which gives a great perspective into their emotional depth as a band.
