    I've now noticed that in retail when Luigi says "Look, Wendy's hotel!" it sounds like the audio was spliced together, which we now know it was.
    These guys were way ahead of their time, they were doing YTP before it was cool.

    Different "Hurry!" delivery. Also, just noticed that door lacks the appearing sequence in the Beta. This was probably intentional but later on they realised the animation was off, so they played backwards the frames when it disappears in retail version.
    (While one of them was recycled when player is running out of time during the stages if that's the case in the beta.)

    When Halfway into the wendys hotel cutscene, the colors of mario and Luigi's shirts and overalls just say "yeah, screw this game. " and change colors.

    One detail with the beta cutscenes you didn’t mention is that the timing of the vocals are different. You can see it best in the part where the Mario bros are waiting to catch peach, in retail after Mario says “Get ready to catch her” there’s a small pause inbetween that and when Luigi replies. Meanwhile in the beta Luigi responds as soon as Mario stops talking

      I'm guessing that in the retail, they added pauses to the animation to space out the lines.

      Another example: in the retail outro to Ludwig's castle, it says "spooky" after the castle crumble, whereas in the beta it is said as soon as the castle starts crumbling. The devs probably didn't want the crumbling sounds and the "spooky" to overlap.

      i feel like this is more a hardware issue rather than the devs intentionally adding pauses

      @@papermarioparty08 im assuming due to more content added to the game on the retail version, causing it to slow down a lot and to take frequent pauses when rendering cutscenes
      (although im not saying this is the real reason, just my own theory)

      It is. If it sounds familiar, then it's because it was used for when the player is running out of time on certain stages.

      I think it's the same audio but looks like the beta is slowed down compared to the retail one, that's more sped up. I don't think there's a reason to do a different take on such a short speech.

    It’s funny to see the cutscenes change from crystal clean audio of the actors voices, and then cut back immediately to a stereo system test (LEFT, RIGHT).
    Although I can’t think of a reason as to why they replaced the voices unless they didn’t have them ready at the time the beta was compiled

      Given how the Stereo Test occurs only in Mid-Hotel cutscenes, it can be assumed that piggybank one is going to have it as well.

      Part of me thinks they made the the intro and transition cutscenes first. They probably knew what sort of secrets they wanted to make, but didn't know how those secrets would be implemented in-universe. They likely knew they wanted to prevent Blackouts or Clouds or Boos from meddling with play, but they didn't have the ideas of unplugging a powerhog set of toasters, pressing a button to activate a fan, or using Ghost Repellent (or Ghost Cologne in the final game.)

      To me, it feels like mid-level cutscenes fail to load their audio due to being loaded mid-level. The routine may be skipping something that the intro and outro do. Feels like something that can happen, but it may also be some hopium talking.

    Another possible reason for "Bowser's Ghost Cologne" is that, like every other US media property based on Mario from the Super Show to The Movie, they kept using the name Koopa instead of Bowser for some unknown reason, and were probably corrected later in development. Remember, they didn't say "It's from Bowser!" in the beta's opening sequence. Of course, I'm just speculating here.

    The cutscene to Wendy’s hotel looked like a ytp edit with the different colors. Also props to you for actually playing the entire game yourself in order to get the footage. I could imagine that’s not the easiest way to do it, but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

    One thing I don't think was mentioned yet is the timing on all the cutscenes is way faster than the retail version, I assume so the animators can quickly see all the animations they did in the game and make sure they work without having to keep on watching through the properly timed spaces of the cutscenes.
    It leads to funny things happening in the beta version like 17:42 making it look like Mario saying "spooky" caused the castle to break lol

    I regret never bothering to look up the actual gameplay for this game because I've gone so many years without knowing Ludwig can use Sith Lightning. If only there was a Cutscene showing this off because I'm sure it would've been used in a lot of YTPs.
    Seriously though, thank you for including footage of the final version of the game in these videos so we can have direct comparisons instead of you simply saying what's different.

      i think it's kinda funny as well. Bowser has some brands of products in this game like bread and a ghost COLOGNE (funnier than a simple ghost repellent). Does he show up in the products' commercials too like DeDeDe in Kirby Right Back At Ya ?

    Man it's so cool seeing this unfold as you learn about it too. Don't get me wrong, it's cool when a full prototype gets dumped and you can go online and pick through the assets, but it's overwhelming too. Having these bite sized nuggets of gameplay is so much fun! Probably more fun than the actual game lmao

    The bat sprite being changed from grey to brown is most likely for visibility's sake. The stage is already predominantly grey so it would've made those bats incredibly difficult to see back then on a CRT. Even from your recordings, they are hard to spot.

    Looking at the beta cutscenes, there seem to be no pauses inbetween most dialogues compared to the retail version (i.e. they seem to have added a lot of pauses inbetween dialogues for the retail version), so I already thought the cutscenes were a bit shorter anyway, and am a bit surprised that you only noticed the shorter runtime of the cutscene from beating Lemmy's hotel/entering Ludwig's hotel.
    Speaking of which, because there's no pauses inbetween dialogues, it does make the animation of Mario turning his head to face Luigi after his "It's been one of those days" line a LOT smoother compared to the retail version. As it turns out, in the retail version, they added the pause _as Mario is about to turn his head_ instead of the frame before when he's done sweating; making the animation look choppy and awkward, like when you stop a video on the frame as one is about to sneeze or something.

    The difference in the cologne in the ghost hotel might actually have been because of a gameplay change and/or disconnect in design -- the dialogue Mario says in the retail version suggests that the effect of the cologne has to do with the doors disappearing ("maybe this will keep that lizard king from messing with the doors"), which doesn't make sense for something like "Ghost Repellent", which would instead suggest that the effect would make the ghosts stop trying to attack Mario.
    The actual possible reasonings are as such:
    1. The original effect _was_ actually to repel the ghost enemies, but this proved to be way too overpowered (I would assume, given how abundant they are), so it was changed later.
    OR 2. The original effect was the same as the retail, but the description of Ghost Repellent was obviously too confusing to players when it had nothing to do with the ghost enemies, so they had it edited to Bowser's cologne instead.

      Good points!
      I was confused as to why the ghosts were still appearing in the Beta after I found the secret room but, upon repeating the process in the Retail game, I realized the cologne was meant to stop the doors from disappearing.
      Ludwig's Hotel would've been MUCH easier if the ghost repellent actually worked though! haha

    One thing I noticed is that Ludwig's boss uses the music from an earlier level. Makes me wonder if the music for that boss wasn't finalized for it to not be included.

    I noticed the silly clouds have a slightly different appearance from beta to retail! at 1:31 you can see the retail cloud has a smaller mouth and large eyes towards the middle of its face. at 3:10 the mouth is much larger and the eyes are more towards the top of the face, the cloud itself might be a bit larger too!

    The beta footage of Hotel 4 reminds me of a certain infamous game journo who struggled with the tutorial for Cuphead so badly that he got ruthlessly mocked for it by the gaming community. I think I have an answer to what’s going on there, as you keep getting sent up two and down two when riding those elevators, at least until you reached the very top of the right side elevator.

    I'm personally looking forward to seeing whether or not the "unused" music, heard in the latter half of the final game's hotel 5 ending cutscene, is present in full somewhere in this prototype. If it's not the music used in hotel 6, then I hope it's in the files somewhere.

    I think the change from “Ghost repelant” to “ghost cologne” was probably because Mario sprays it on his face. They probably didn’t want children to mimic this with real bug spray so they made it cologne instead.
    Also, I think if you look at the retail version, when Mario sprays himself the bottle still has a red top like in the beta

    If the "left right" is an audio channel test, it didn't work. Its in mono, both my headphones play the same sound.
    Either the audio was compressed to mono in capture, or its not a channel test.

    I might think the left right audio may be a speaker test of sort to test the left and right speaker specifically or something idk

    I have a question about the sixth hotel.
    When you beat Ludwig's hotel, does it bring you back to the same level like you showed in the stage select at the end of the video, or is Wendy's Hotel playable in this build?
    Can we expect a part 4?

    12:32 That seems to be the case with almost all of the cutscenes; the retail version has a lot of individual scenes linger longer than normal instead of cutting, while the beta version has these same scenes end a lot quicker. It's why the gaps between dialogue are much faster in the beta version, such as when Mario and Luigi are talking.

    They changed the text on the Spray Can because they accidently called "Bowser" "Koopa" which was always a Mic-Match of names back in the 90s.

      I don't think so as that could have also originally been referencing the Koopa species/tribe, Bowser's last name, or the Koopalings as they were commonly referred to as the "Koopa Kids" at the time. In the beta version "Koopa" is written as a brand (offset in a corner in different font), whereas on the retail version "Bowser" is a part of the product name ("Bowser's Ghost Cologne"). I think that change was just incidental, and the real motive was more likely removing the word "dead"/"undead" because the ongoing moral panic about violence in video games was still constantly on the news at the time. Along with the rebranding, they also changed the top of the bottle to resemble a bottle of cologne rather than a generic spray, so clearly some thought went into the edit beyond just changing Koopa to Bowser.
      All that said, I do prefer the beta version's cartoony text with its rounded perspective. The release version just slapped the text flat on the bottle.

    TBH, I kind of expected that the scrapped hotel wouldn't be there, since some of the dialog was changed to be 7 hotels instead of 8. But I still hope that at LEAST some of the tiles of the levels are still on the disc.

    I feel like the color palette glitch at hotel 5's cutscene was (this is just a theory)
    because there was maybe an older cutscene that had the original hotel 6 cutscene (due to hotel 6 being unused in the game files, which takes you to hotel 7, wendy's hotel)
    but they decided to remove that cutscene, although maybe the color palette of the original hotel 6 was still there, so it gets overlapped by mario and luigi, perhaps???
    im not sure if cd-i cutscenes even work like that, but this could be a possibility

    10:14 When Mario says "Hurry" it is different compared to the final version, though something I thought to research into is that it is the exact same audio clip as when he tells you to hurry when the timer is running out when you're in a level.

    all of the cutscenes seem a little shorter actually, you can kinda tell the regular cutscenes have weird held frames everywhere
