You know what they say, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT
@Slenderquil Dang you, MS Paint Marth, I was gonna make the same joke!
I can't believe we have the full "no" scene with no effects and fully uncompressed, thank you so much!!!!
YOU BRING A LIGHT?
NO effects?
@@F0nkyNinja No
Well maybe, a Koopa will lend us his... if we *persuade* him.
This is a threat to all Koopas out there. You are not safe.
That "no" so clear is the most epic thing I've ever heard
Hotel 3's cutscene has a different angle in one shot. 14:39 16:55
Also those beta intro screens are way better.
Also left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right left right.
Good catch!
Good eye! The beta version’s posing actually lines up more with the cut before it compared to the retail version where it looks like Mario changed his pose slightly after saying “no”.
The bounce they do at end animation error lol
@@gamepakrat Would it be wrong to ask if the in-game sound effects of Hotel Mario is extracted and put into a folder shared at the Sounds Resource?
Yeah, I noticed how freakish Mario looks in that frame
I think that "LEFT RIGHT" audio in the toaster cut-scene could be a stereo sound test. The devs possibly replaced the audio of that scene as a quick and simple way to test if stereo sound was working correctly.
Thank you once again for sharing this. I'm looking forward to seeing what else will be discovered.
BTW I think I’ve heard that audio before somewhere it might be in the final game, I’m not sure
@@LandonEmmaInteresting
That audio isn't even working properly, because it's not in stereo. Didn't feel anything on my headphones.
@@rcmero Could be that the footage was captured in mono. We'll know for sure once we have the full dump of the disc. Or they attempted to add that test and failed. We can only speculate for now.
@@rcmero The footage could be compressed.
4:12 In the instruction manual, the mushroom power-up was inexplicably called Toad. Now we know why.
Thats what I was going to say actually. Guess it was just a case of them forgetting to revise the enclosed instruction book to account for the change
(12:51) Maybe the original audio's in one of the files. Remind me to check!
It might be a quick stereo test replacement, so if that's the case, probably.
@@PaperMarioParty08 The voice clips have to be in the files somewhere if the cutscene is fully animated. The final has very quiet background audio so it's not a big loss if it isn't in this prototype.
@@RETROMAN-RUclips-Channel Yeah
Also how would u animate it without the audio
@@thedebbiewinner They had animated it beforehand with the voice lines and they quickly replaced it to do a stereo test. If that's the case, the voice clips have to be in the files somewhere.
12:57 You know what they say, LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT
Game Pak Rat: *Makes it crystal clear that he's going to dump the ISO and specifically outlines the technical hurdles that he needs to overcome first *
The comments: "WhY HaVeNt YoU DuMpEd ThE IsO?????!!!!!!!!!111111"
we live in the best timeline, hotel mario cutscenes with no music, the meme potential is HUGE
Not getting "all toasters toast toast" without music or sound effects is a great loss though. I'm sad about that.
@@pretzel1313 I noticed that he said that the "left right" audio continues even after the cutscene is done and waits for you to press a button to continue. This could mean that perhaps the real audio for the cutscene is still in the game's data and the in-game cutscene is just being overwritten with LEFT RIGHT.
16:54
It's so surreal finally hearing this without the echo or music.
Nice pfp
No.
@404TVfrn o
The fact that the beta didn't have the unnecessarily long pause after 'No.', indicating that it wasn't just a bizarre editing oversight but rather something that the creators consciously decided to go back and add in, is amazing to me.
@55ocsguy67 thanks bro yours is pretty nice too
Those exact same "Left, Right" voice clips exist in the data of Capcom's Saturday Night Slam Masters. I imagine they are part of some sort of audio production library, and are used for stereo testing purposes.
I’m thinking the “left right left right” thing may have been some kind of stereo test, maybe to make sure everything is proporly balanced or panned. That said, I’ll sounds like it’s coming out of the same channel, so I wonder if the uploaded may have knocked things down to mono after capturing the footage. If someone has access to the dumped ROM, can you confirm this?
The retail game has all the audio in mono, 18.9khz. i feel like it could be the same in the demo but might actually have stereo files left in the disc?
I still can’t believe I originally thought Hotel Mario was some sort of business management sim with a Mushroom Kingdom twist, though to be fair, that probably would’ve been a lot more fun than closing doors for the umpteenth time.
"Sim City in the Mushroom Kingdom" would have attracted some novelty, no doubt.
In the "Maybe a koopa will lend us his" cave intro scene, Luigi is massive in the retail version but looks to be normal size in the beta.
You know, the more I see of this game, the more I think it could have made a great minigame in an actual Mario game. The music is actually pretty good (The ice hotel has some legitimately fine sounds), the mechanics are solid enough. Though I don't think this concept could hold to a whole game... but it did.
I could see it working as a Mario Party minigame, like whoever closes the most doors wins.
God bless you dear sir! You’ve given us not just a piece of gaming archaeology, but fully uncompressed RUclips poop sound sources that we’ve been waiting for since 2007!
I remember seeing a Hotel Mario YTP with that cursed LEFT-RIGHT audio I guess the RUclips Pooper somehow got ahold of the Beta before anyone got to see it like you found it.
Might have also been unused in the final version, just like the tutorial was
Do you have a link to that YTP?
Bro what?? Do you have a link to said YTP video???
felon in the comment section mentioned that maybe Hard4Games could help you out with preserving the disc.
It'd take about 4 to 5 hours by car to go from Chicago to Detroit, Michigan though.
Maybe you should contact Hard4Games and meet up in the middle somewhere to hand it over in person.
I would not trust mailing services, so meeting up in person would be the only safe way to handle this.
Wake up babe, new Hotel Mario beta content dropped
13:12 I think it's like a placeholder test voice for stereo video, but because the video is mono, I don't see why they used it.
I'm guessing "Left/Right" is a stereo check. Doesn't sound very stereo to me, but that might be just me, or A/V compression or whatever. Of course, I could be wrong, since Zelda's Adventure literally has a screen saying "This is presented In Stereo" like we should care.
The CD not opening in Windows is normal. CD-I uses a slightly different format than what Windows usually expects, so it will show up as blank. I recommend trying to make a copy of the disc in Imgburn and see if it is able to image it or not.
I've tried, but even Imgburn won't recognize the disc (it shows up as a blank disc with no data and errors out when I try to make a backup).
I've also tried IsoBuster & CloneCD with no luck so I think the root of the issue is my disc drive (Archgon MD-8107-U3).
Going to see if anyone local (Chicago suburbs) already has the hardware to help me get it dumped and/or look into getting a Plextor drive.
@@gamepakrat I could try to dump it with a few different OS's (Mac, Windows, Linux) and a few different disc drives because I heard that could help, but you would have to mail it to me :( if you still wanna do it reply to this and we can set something up!
That's because the CD-i uses the CD-i format instead of the CD-ROM format. The former is known as the Green Book while the latter is the Yellow Book.
@@gamepakratHave you tried Linux? If it can read the disc, it may be possible to do a backup using the dd command.
Thinking about how the stages have music but the cutscenes do not, perhaps they were planning to create custom music for the cutscenes like the CD-i Zelda games have, but changed their minds later on?
The beta is the only time Toad ever appears in Hotel Mario
Wouldn’t be funny if this game had Legend of Zelda CDi leftovers in it. Like that would ever happen
foreshadowing...
@@radicalquad I hope so

after all this time, luigi kicking that block still gets me
You know what they say!? Left, right, left, right, left right . . .
The fact mario kills toad in the beta lol
I think they changed the stage screens for readability
12:58 NO THEY DO NOT!
12:52 I started beatboxing over this xD
This will surely expand the RUclips Poop lore.
Good to see the game was just as demented before release.
Hey, I've been with this channel since the first video, and I just wanna say thanks for doing this, the beta of Hotel Mario is something I believe we never saw before, so it's really interesting.
the retail holds way longer on Mario saying "no" my god did they know?
...No? *sick bass strumming*
“You know what they say! All lefts left rights!”
Great find big guy, very interresting❤
Surprised there aren't alot of cutscene differences
Oh my god. We gonna have a Hotel Mario' story everyday now 😂😂😂😂.
Joke aside, i found this game better than the Zelda CDI. Mario, Luigi, Boswer, Peach and the koopaling appearance are respect and the dialogue between the two brother are funny sometime. Plus, the drawing is not very very bad.
I recognize that LEFT RIGHT voice! I've heard that voice in the speaker test thing somewhere in... Windows, I think? Perhaps in an AC'97 audio driver sound test? But it says "front left" and "front right" there (probably to do with surround setups).
Wow the music is actually Stereo And Uncompressed!
Thank you for showing the behind the scenes too!
By the way i noticed you said "have fun remixing". I like that Game Pak Rat knows about the Hotel Mario RUclips Poops! XD
Can't wait to see the compilation of all the cutscenes for the Beta! Awesome finds man! :)
the reason why your disk drive cant read the beta is because cdi discs are not standard cd-rom discs the the computer recognizes.
i think getting a glimpse into the development of this game has allowed me to appreciate it a bit more. seems like they had at least a little fun making it
Thank you so much again for doing all of this. We are so lucky that this beta landed into your hands. :)
a difference i just noticed in the beta is that the elevators sound different
If I was playing the game and heard "LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT" I'd be scared sh-tless at first ngl 😂
Y’know this may sound a bit strange but I feel like if it was done well hotel Mario could be an excellent horror game!
12:50
I didn’t know Girlfriend from Friday Night Funkin’ was in the beta. /j
FNF Tutuorial In A Nutshell: 12:50
A bit curious, if you get the chance could you check if the bosses can eat you if they catch you in a door in the Beta? I know in the Retail version all of them do except for Lemmy and I think Iggy? There's not a lot of videos of them doing that to begin with.
Another detail: the coins in retail only appear from doors, while in the beta they appear in the middle of nowhere
left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right, left...
I refuse to believe that this is real.
I'm telling you, this is gonna turn out to be some analog horror thing!
remind me to check!
ok but even if this somehow isn't real, we still get clean dialog so it's a win-win
Just giving my two cents, I think the disc is not in a standard cdi format because it is recordable. You should try seeing if it's possible to dump its contents through other means, like through the console itself. Also, it may be a stretch but have you considered trying to record its audio from a CD player? Even if it is garbled, there are ways to interpret the audio as raw data and it should be even easier to distribute than dumping a rom. Thanks!
i wonder if there is any other differents in cutscenes.
i like how difficult the beta is
Oh wow, I actually live somewhat close to you! It's a shame I know nothing about dumping 😅
Let’s go!!
Hello, I'm Turtle.
I'm nowhere near where you live, but I'd love to help you get the disc dumped as soon as possible. I have experience with preservation of media, and with the CD-i in general. I'd love to discuss options! Lemme know how to best contact you or if I can just post here.
Thanks for sharing this interesting piece of history with us, hope it gets properly preserved soon. 😄
did you bring a light?
no
LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT
If only we had a rom of this. Its like a demo, and the full game, except with the best stuff left out! I will call it: quarter-demos or quarter-game. Notice how theres no ™? Go ahead, use it, im making it royalty free! Im talking about quarter-demos and quarter-games. Dont get confused!
So, question: in the retail Hotel Mario, there are a few extra cutscenes for when Mario finds a hidden room, but none for Luigi.
Is there any chance a Luigi-version of these cutscenes exists in the Beta?
Do you know if morton and roy eat mario in the beta?
They do! If they catch Mario in an elevator, they eat him and spit out his hat when the door opens!
Y’know what they say… LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT

where's the pipe scene where mario just sucked into the pipe and landed somewhere else and saying "where am i?". is there any difference in the beta version?
Yeah beta hotel 1 intro screen is better :o

Why are the first two beta title cards soooooooo much better than the final? They massively downgraded them in the final I swear. Guarantee there will be a definitive version after the beta is uploaded that gives the final game the way cooler intro cards.
@rickpgriffin mentioned this too, but it could've been because they didn't have enough time to make all the cool title cards, and it would've been jarring to only have 2 of them, so they made all of them basic
Is it possible for you to rip this? The internet would go crazy for a Hotel Mario beta ROM.
Not without specialized hardware.
@@Toonrick12he didn't check the enclosed instruction books.

Oh okay so hotel Mario is basically a shit version of Elevator Action.
Could you dump the rom onto the internet
Dump the ROM already

no he's not? he said in the first video that he would dump it
30:11

As stated at the end of the video, he's run into trouble dumping the ROM to his computer.
Like if Hard4Games hasn’t done the same thing, I personally think it’s cool that he is using his flea market find to grow out the channel considering the double-digit views he had on previous videos. Talking about flea markets, just be thankful he isn’t Dennis Fleaman
This is like finding new books of the bible.
Imagine an alternate universe where we're memeing on "LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT" instead!
“Ya know what they say, LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT!”
I figure the reason they didn't ultimately stick with the cool level logos is because they couldn't make them all in the allotted time--a good logo can take a while to compose, especially when they all need to be unique but also mesh with each other style-wise. So they swapped to the meh-but-servicable title cards that were much quicker to produce.
Probably.
I'm pretty sure the final title cards are supposed to resemble looney tunes title cards.
that's what i was thinking too
To explain 30:11, here's the lowdown. All other CD based systems use CD-ROMs for their format. Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Sega Saturn, etc. This is known as the Yellow Book standard. The CD-i uses the CD-i format (Kind of a duh moment) which is a weird fusion of CD-ROM and CD-DA (Audio disks, also known as the Red Book format). The format of the CD-i is the Green Book. VERY VERY few CD readers outside those made for the CD-i itself can read CD-i disks. It's similar to despite almost being DVDs, normal DVD drives can't read/write GameCube or Wii disks.
(The colors refer to the format specifications that standardizes how CDs are formatted. These are called "Rainbow Books" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Books )
Are there ways to modify a disk reader to read a CD-i?
Is there a sort of "optical KryoFlux" for optical media? Reading raw bits/light variations directly instead of having the CD/DVD chain interpret them for us?
@@oscarcacnio8418It's possible, but the hardware needed isn't really a commercially available to the average game collector.
Are Gamecube/Wii discs a specific Rainbow Book color or do they fall under an already established color with some slight modifications?

The Super Mushroom being Toad makes a ton of sense, I’m pretty sure the retail version’s manual refers to the mushroom as Toad still. What doesn’t make sense is why Toad would give you an extra hit which is definitely why it was changed.
In the og mario bros manual it says bowser turned the toadstools into blocks and items iirc
Toad's head looks like a Super Mushroom but with different colors, they probably confused the two and thought Toad was a mushroom.
@@E2wqpXcGGnLtJHbVXDhS3 Yeah but that’s a bit different than Toad being a Super Mushroom.
@@MeesterTweester No, it was LITERALLY Toad in the beta. The manual calling the Super Mushroom Toad is most likely a leftover from when it was actually Toad.

The beta toasters audio is a stereo testing track. Probably just placeholder audio they hadn't replaced yet.
12:52 Sounds like an audio channel sound test, essentially where the word "Left" is played out the left speaker, and "Right" is played out the right speaker. With the sound being in mono, the sound test is pretty moot. My question is, was this set to mono in the game files themselves, or is your capture solution only taking in mono audio?
I'm capturing in Stereo (via the Red & White audio outputs) and haven't edited the audio aside from lowering the volume a bit (the music is LOUD!).
I just double-checked my raw footage of that scene and the audio plays evenly in both channels so I'm thinking the alternating channels weren't configured properly when they burned the disc.
@@gamepakratI listened to the Beta Toaster Scene on my phone and could feel the channels vibrate to each direction on my phones speaker so it might be a headphone issue
What if you wanted a clean version of the toaster cutscene audio, but the devs were like *stereo sound test*
It might still be in the files, since they probably just quickly replaced the audio with the stereo sound test.
