It's been almost 15 years since Dead Space 1 came out and yet few other games have had the same innately unnerving vibe of cold metal and DEATH like Dead Space. Lol I was listening to this in the middle of the night with my eyes closed and I heard “Twinkle twinkle little star”, and that scared the shit out of me. I thought someone was in my room talking to me.
Okay, one big thing in horror games that makes them FEEL scary, is sound design, music, and ambience. DS1 and 2 capture these things very well, the ambience of being in Zero G alone and fighting alien zombies (necromorphs of course) is truly terrifying, and all you can hear is the sound of Issac breathing, the muffled sounds of his oxygen counter going down, and the sounds of him shooting his guns at the necromorphs. I really wish I started dead space with the first game instead of the second, since I truly think that Dead Space 1 was terrifying, and the fatal issues with 3 was that it focused less on horror and more on action, for an action game, dead space 3 nailed it, but horror? Absolutely not, and I wish that 3 did more to capture that horror element, of being in space, alone, with nothing but your suit, weapons, and the feeling of dread you would have being alone against an army of necromorphs. If you read this, thank you! Lets discuss the topic in the comments if you want! :D
Sound Design is definitely important for games especially horror games. Dead Space is easily my top reference for great sound design and hopefully will be a good template for when I do Sound Design for video games.
True, being trapped in a place with horrific insanity, unstable insane people, and then horrible mutant zombies while the next safe place is billions of kilometers away, and in between nothing but the unimaginable wide, dead space where death is guaranteed. And then a brethren moon shows up and now even in the darkness of space are beings, so horrible that you will die unless you have technology hundred or thousands of years apart from even the technology of 2500?! Edit: and unless you're a gully trained soldier, very bad at aiming and actually really not as invincible as Isaac in 2 and 3. What he pulled of so many times is insane and is more super human. None of us would be able to do it. This could be so horrifying!
Unfortunately, most players miss the whole thing about horror in DS3. Modern ship crew meet two hundred years flotilla with ruined carcasses of long-dead ships (named btw after failed polar missions and deserted village) and its crew members. The first look at it makes you assume - what happened to this ships? What led them here? The whole scenery leads you to a horrible conclusions. And with every step, with every searched vessel you unveil long-forgotten mysteries full of terror, hopelessness and death. Yes, we still had jumpscares, but it is atmosphere of remote and unknown tragedy, that makes game scary. And also explanation, why space is dead.
@@madgoatsoldier the prolog destroys any mistery since we know these people lost control of an marker outbreak, since we have Necromorphs attacking the protagonist and that the survivors killed each other to protect earth. So no... No sense of mistery about that. Secondly the brief sections of Dread like being alone on tau Volantis, freezing are overshadowed by the action, making you question who needs to be afraid of Necromorphs if one single mechanic can kill wave after wave without dropping a sweat. Then the music gives not the atmosphere of solitude and being on a dead planet or space. Dead space 1 made both things right where 3 failed. Each Necromorph seemed so dangerous and made people panic, which could then be translated to the moons being more danferous. And the music gave the feeling of being trapped and only dead, cold, lonely space awaited outside the Ishimura. In contrast 3 made Isaac and carver fly through a vortex created by a fucking moon, somehow not being crushed by debris, killing a bunch of Necromorphs on the way and in the end killing the moon. Two men did that!!! I understand the core idea of dead space 3 but they failed in all ways to deliver the horror cause the player is super human! What is horror if you don't feel threatened because you're a superhuman with the biggest plot armor ever?!
This awesome, beautiful ambience is serene and sinister at the same time. It's just really creepy once you get to Aegis VII though. It's just you and Kendra till the end, and she dies really tragically. The entire 'planet' just felt empty and pensive. I don't think any other horror game will be able to portray such a space environment as part of its story setting any better than Dead Space. The game is not just scary, it makes you feel hopeless and just 'in awe' of the possibilities of the future.
You feel the utter loneliness in the first game everyone is dying or turned into a necromorphe no colony to call for, no way out ,just an engineer and the few people who came along with you. Desperately trying to get the hell out. In the end it was just an engineer who wanted to see his girlfriend he wasn't a soldier or a hero just a man with nothing but the tools at hand. A simple man in a world gone insane
You gaze into the abyss. A moment of biting, rapturous oblivion washes over you like frozen sunshine; then, in a flash of relentless inspiration, you realize: the abyss... it gazes back. As Nietzsche once said: "In fighting monsters, be sure not become one yourself."

I should mention the midpoint of this game. Hydroponics, gives me the creeps most. The natural animal noises unsettle me, and moving through the zero g meat hallway with this soundtack makes me feel like a piece of meat in the process of being chewed up and digested. It really unnerved me. While Dead Space remake tackles the game differently, more people alive in some areas and more conversations the original makes the Ishimura feel desolate and empty. Genuinely nervous walking through the halls.
Hmm, thanks for the reply. I still haven’t played remake (too many games on roster), but from your description it sounds that original is more tense in sense of horror. Like RE4 Remake, it’s not bad, but there are lots of some minor things that still make original better in sense of story telling and gameplay.
@@pugmayne I would say it’s different! The remake has you walk through places where some people had their last stand hours ago, while the original feels like it was a day ago. BUT that feeling of emptiness returns when you have to go through an area you’ve already been to open a locked room. Because at that point you know there is literally nothing there. No people, no hope. Just you with your thoughts. Like medical is a bit uncanny in the original, it kinda already feels like a haunted house, but remake? It starts off feeling like a sterile environment that was abandoned, and then Mercer moves in and fuck that place is just cursed now. I won’t spoil any new things if you don’t know but still. Issac’s voice is a welcome new change, so much that his lack of one in the original now feels odd. The game also plays with your expectations, hydroponics no longer has two wings at the lobby you cross over from one wing to another which i imagine would disorientate anyone who was familiar with the original. It’s solid af highly recommend.

Most remasters are worse than originals, there are really few true remasters. I don’t believe EA can do this right. Latest example- NFS HP 2010 remaster, it is so lame I refunded it, even though I love this game and its multiplayer
@@pugmayne Id be happy with a texture update and a polish for the newer consoles, bit like Dark Souls. Cant see it myself like, but would be awesome
Funny you say that lol, they woulda announced the remake very soon after you said this
wow, I never noticed you'd get SUCH a good view of Aegis VII from the asteroid!! that's breathtaking (is the Twinkle twinkle cut in or does it appear if you stay longer onto the asteroid? I always gtfo'd off the rock asap)
Twinkle Twinkle fade in ending was added by me, so it doesn’t exist in real game in this form. This version is kind of exclusive :)
I love these games I've just replayed 1 and 2 and am playing 2 again. I can't wait for the remake to be announced hopefully on 22nd July.
Have you played 3rd?
@@pugmayne
Yes when it first came out, it was definitely more action orientated than horror and wasn't quite as good as 1 and 2. I haven't decided yet whether to download and play that too yet although I probably will. Lol
@@jaymac7203 I liked it and it was pretty scary to me :) Especially I loved flying in open space. All 3 are my favs, and yet I’m not that positive about a remake. I’m waiting the worst in hope of the best :)
@@pugmayne 3 was horrible, it was rushed so EA can kill it
wanna see this scene in the remake
Entering zero gravity!
Looks like the doom slayer shot a hole in the surface of aegis VII
Guess Samuel Hayden was wrong about not being able to shoot a hole in the surface of aegis 7 too lmao

@@gurg2671 Shut that shit up
Man I hope the remake has the same track for this chapter!
Best action horror game of all time!!
@@AthelstansSuccessor Indeed! I remember how I dreamed for sequels of first game, while replaying first part and without having ability to find a single game that could compete with it. So I tamed my hunger rewatching “Events Horizon” :)
This is fucking good
Chills down my spine
I’d like to believe that there’s a moon like Aiges 7 where a marker exists.
I don’t think it exists at all, but maybe some planets can use some sort of Insanity for people.
@T&S Podcast oh yea lol
@@kirillassasin you never know there’s still undiscovered space out there.
@T&S Podcast maybe that will be the great filter ... slowly getting closer
Let’s hope not...
A really fine and unique game!
Love both the Dead Space games. Then there's the one we don't talk about.
Which one is the other
@@nostrnastr9439 dead Space 3?
@@ModeSOLOgaming disappointed for me is only the 1 and by the way people cant read your mind practice for better communication on future constructive critic
Most dead Space fans will know what I'm talking about.
@@ModeSOLOgaming okay is that your idea about communication not my problem goodbye
And why write on youtube social media no man go a step beyond
Don't write nothing because everyone know what you want say so there no need to lost time writing
I really hope that the new game stays true to this, this tone that just makes you feel so small, so worthless.
It's just DEAD SPACE out there
Best mission i ever played
Just beat this game on hard. And now on dead space 2 I love these games forever.
The beginning sounds like a minecraft cave sound.
It could be that Minecraft was inspired by Dead Space at some point =)
@@chasethecringewolf2195 Wow, thanks for such a good comparison review. Now I really hyped to play it, as soon as I finish Cyberpunk and upcoming Alan Wake 2, I’ll start playing DSR
And I thought the Zero-g ambiance was just relaxing
guess I was wrong, also ladies and gentlemen we are getting a remake of this game
We Are All OWNED BY DEADLY SPACE
Ambience
Unos de los mejores sountrack para ambientacion para video juegos. Que existe.... me gusta esta vercion.. es mucho mejor que la del remake
You my head doesn't grow back I feel like I'm carrying the world in my head an it hurts.
Is anyone else kind of worried about "Motives Reimaging" of Dead Space. Idk but something tells me to hope that this rumor is false. I think the series should stay shelved a bit longer maybe a decade, then see about revisiting the ip and have the possibility of a come back like Doom did.
They are Hungry, They are Coming
Came back... The Remake Is Amazing!!! Totally Recommend it!!!
Thanks! I will play it definitely as soon as I get back to my PC, at home, because of damned bloody ruscists our life is harsh now.
I want to watch deadspace downfall now.
Why does it seem like the planet is getting bigger
Space is dead

I honestly thought this was a part of the actual game. Would have been a really great easter egg.
This looped part in the video & music are from actual game. I’ve recorded part on asteroid, looped it. Then I’ve exported 2 music themes from game and mixed them into single one.
@@pugmayne I mean the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I know it plays in chapter 6 and 10 but it hits different like this.
@@jinik8059 Oh, yeah! Right! I felt it would be creepy awesome to fade in at the end to Twinkle Twinkle like that. It brings all the horror goosebumps at once. I think it creates the correct mood🙂
Gives me KOTOR2 vibes, dunno why.
ufff juegazo
What happens if you fly towards the planet? 🤔
Im pretty sure the game gives you the ability to jump out into space. Isaac floats off and the game counts it as a death.
айзек под стазисом
The song in the last part, is it edited ?
Twinkle twinkle little ⭐️ ? That’s original sample from Dead Space 1 faded (mixed) in the original “Zero Gravity”
Can you do the Nicole Boss fight music from dead space 2
The Übermorph is so über, it learned to read and write. Not terrifying at all.
@Paper Clip Holy shit.

What's your thoughts on the remake? Does it keep the original soundtrack?
That may sound weird, but I haven’t played it yet. Though it’s in my list.
@@pugmayne Well, I just bought it - but I haven't tried it. Heard people were having issues with it and was thinking of getting a refund... Apparently it's still a good game, but major stuttering will definitely suck!
@@correctthatfilthygrammar PC or console?
@@pugmayne I got it for PC, Steam. Heard there's been some issues regarding both platforms though.
@@correctthatfilthygrammar That’s why I decided to wait at least for a year:)
It's unfortunate how bad Dead Space 3 was, I loved Dead space 1 & 2 but 3 was a HUGE let down
It wasn't bad in my opinion, just seemed like they had no idea where they wanted to take the story, so it falls apart.
I dont think the devs though this shot through... isnt ageis 7 a bit too far here?
It is.
Is that a moon?
That's AegisVII (deadspace.fandom.com/wiki/Aegis_VII)
No, it's a space station.
@@nexxus2614 if we talk about USG Ishimura, then it's a starship. And Isaac Clarke in the video is on asteroid, that was pulled by the ship for harvesting
@@nexxus2614 I understood that reference
@@Lubble- Lucky you =) Am I missing something, can you please explain?
In which chapter/ part of the game is that?
Long time no play, but if I'm not mistaken it's the part where you have to release the meteor.
Chapter 7
mining deck, subdeck 2 or 3, same part of the game where you find Nicole
Be kinda funny if the captain Matthias was alive and scared tell you how the Crew turned into monsters and marker was on ship. Isaac Clark: that's caz you fucked up big and only cares about your Creed!!!!* Used stasis on the captain and useing a upgraded ripper* Nicole: 🤢🤮. Dr Mercer 😨😰😱. Daniel's Kendra: 😶🫣

Coming back 1 Year later to this Comment Section We didn't get a Remaster we got something way better and it looks Very Promising altough there is small changes in the remake but im sure it will be amazing re experiencing the game (:
Truly, I was not impressed with gameplay trailers. Let's see what we get after it's released.
@@pugmayne Also Having Played Callisto Protocol I can say that it's a worse/Downgraded version of Dead space it was overhyped to hell.
