[Mario Kart Wii] Unrestricted Vehicle Combo: Project update! (2024-07-09)

  • I can confirm that the Unrestricted Vehicle Combo mod project is getting closer and closer to its first release!
    Sorry for the lack of any audio btw. No idea why there isn't any audio, recording got borked, moved to a new PC so I still need to tinker with it a little bit until it's fully operational.
    Plenty of characters are getting done, only very few characters still need to have their textures to be made, and to top it all off, we now have a code to actually load in the illegal combos without the use of holding down buttons; you can select them just like how you remember it in Mario Kart DS!
    Big shoutouts to squidward and Marioiscool246 for this big code update!
    Of course I'm not forgetting Gaberboo and Toadette Hack Fan for helping me out previous to make the combos load on the menu, and a bunch of other people who helped with making them functional, I'm terribly sorry if I'm forgetting people, but I do give proper credit once the first release is published. I'm overly excited as usual for this silly project to the point that any big progression that's being made makes me want to share it all... xD
    And last but not least, big shoutouts to the many community members who've been helping out with making new textures for all the vehicles. Without them, I don't think I would've kept going with this project. There were dips at times but we're getting there, slowly but surely! :D

    It includes a checklist on what needs to be done, as well as a cheatsheet for the characters' seat positionings and codes that are needed to make this functional. I will update the tabs and pages pretty often, it might be a mess at first glance but there's a pattern you can follow. I'll make it prettier eventually, don't worry :P

    The best Mario Kart Wii mod of 2024... It's revolutionary, bringing the dreams of many into reality. When it's released, I can see this blowing up; people making time trial records, having fun on Friend Rooms and more! Very worth hard work

      I'm 100% sure I'm fooling around with the craziest combos in friend rooms. 😂
      There will be different stats as options for modpack and distribution creators too if they want a more casual approach, like having all character bonuses nullified, Only Weight Matters, of course there will be the vanilla variant. We'll make sure to make it easy to understand on how to use it once the first release will be published :D

    Characters who originally cannot ride lighter or heavier vehicles maded them special colors for these vehicles. Neat!

      For this project I'm quite impatient myself, and I know it's going slow but it's getting closer and closer to be done!
      I had some dips myself where I was working on too many things at the same time, but now I'll try my best to stay focused so that we can have the first release published at least before autumn. There are still a few characters that need new textures which other people need to make, but having a base to work work would be great.
      Animations and the actual finishing touches come later. I think we all waited for this one to be released for too long 😅

    I love that with this, Baby Daisy + Flame Runner would be the meta, since she has a higher speed bonus than Funky Kong.

      While that's true, for Time Trials it might not change too much due to turning and drifting also play a very big factor for those extra micromovements. Of course for online play it'd be a no-brainer for many people to choose that combo, though, that's what competitive play does... xD
      I'm 100% sure it won't change too much in competitive play in general as the physics and selection need to be as vanilla as it needs to be though. But one thing's sure: once it gets implemented in a modpack or a specific distribution, then you'll see more variation, for sure. 😄

    Wait ayo this is absolutely insane! Great job as always man, been following all your works since I was a teen and you never fail to impress :) I can only imagine how much editing and such this has taken so far to actually make work

      Surprisingly most of the models were actually really easy to set up, you basically get the character model, and the vehicle model you'd like to give them, and then rename the file. The most work is just the most tedious work, which is setting up all those combos. 😂
      I'm glad we have a team to create the new textures for all the "illegal combos", otherwise it took forever for me to get anywhere with this project... xD
      The hardest work had to be the coding though, so big shoutouts to squidward and Marioiscool246 in the Mario Kart Wii modding community to make the buttons work and make it compatible for pretty much all modes! 😄
      I'm glad many people like what they see so far, this mod will be massive once it gets its first release, very exciting indeed!

      The hitbox detection is insane in this game, almost a whole other small vehicle fits inbetween and the other character already gets bumped away. What a game. 🤪

      Thanks! The menus are still in an experimental state though, and nothing is final as I experiment and document all menus whenever I look at what I can modify... So it's a bit of a never-ending side-project at this point. 😅

    Nice looks like baby daisy on the bowser bike will now be the best combo since baby daisy has a speed stat of +5 compared to funky kong +4 guess it means the bowser bike got a tiny bit of a buff in this mod

      While that's true, sometimes the extra few frames of mini-turbo boosts and other certain stat bonuses do help for very specific courses, so not much will change. Of course people will try, but since we also have certain wheelie-related glitches, who knows what the future will bring us for competitive play. :P
      Good thing I don't care about competitive play for specifically this game, you always can create or recreate the meta, but in the end, people always go back to the original stats due to them being used to those physics and stats, or even due to safety when it comes to promoting modifications. I just create what is needed to expand this game.😅

    I have a question which isn't related to your video, but do you know if there is anyway I can just REMOVE ONLINE mode altogether. I'm making my own custom iso of the game and cant make a custom server for it. I simply want to make it local play only? If you don't know how to do that bit, would you happen to know how to remove the online button from the home screen? I don't expect you to know but if you do it will be a major help. Thank you!!

    interesting on how mario kart wii is the only game that shows the mini turbo stat...

      What's funny is that the stat visuals for Mini-Turbo is actually for how long a mini-turbo lasts, not like activating a mini-turbo. And even then, the super mini-turbo from karts use a multiplier that makes their mini-turbo boosts last longer, so that stat alone does not make any sense. 😂

      @@longlivechrist vabold, the creator of the Character Expansion code hasn't done anything with it ever since the code was shared with a few players and I know nothing about writing code.
      There are many people now who know about this Character Expansion code so hopefully someone with coding skills can fix and improve the current code, as the one we have is just too unstable to make an actual mod out of it.
      Don't worry though, this will get somewhere eventually, I just don't know when it'll become a reality
