- When I first started fly fishing I had never heard of a hotspot nymph. I was still fishing the classic nymph patterns, but soon learned the power of the hotspot. If you haven't fished them you should start soon!

Pardon me if I've said this on another of your videos. I say it compulsively on fishing shows if I catch a presenter saying 'the fish ATE the fly'. Eat = ingest. The fish 'takes' the fly.

I don't know which is more amazing; having that beautiful water to yourself or the ripping Bows slamming your bugs. I would have to be on private water in Colorado to not see any other fishermen at any time of the year, at least for quality water like you have there..... Cheers!

I found bringing a small towel to dry wet hands in winter is a huge help. You are lucky to have that particular body of water to hit. Nice video and happy holidays.

Great video! For decades I have felt that some folks go overboard with "match the hatch". Sometimes it's not about matching the hatch, but about putting something on to interest or annoy a fish enough to strike. There have been times when I have matched an extremely large hatch well, but because it can be a numbers game, takes were few. Tie something different on and it can make all the difference. Your explanation about hot spot locations was awesome.
Yup, I agree. There are times when matching really does matter, but it's not all the time.
@@FlyingTies One thing is for sure, folks all have different experiences and can come to different conclusions. In a bit over 50 years of chucking bugs, and tying to be observant, I've convinced myself that it's often possible to do much better by doing something other than matching the hatch. There have been too many times where I matched the hatch and did okay, only to switch to something much different, and do even better, either in numbers or size of fish, or both. I was lucky to live in Alaska for about 33 years and fished some very clear water where I could really watch reactions. I was amazed how many times switching to something like a bleached out egg pattern would get hammered by bigger fish, even when there was no spawing activity whatsoever. There have been times where I have been catching trout regularly on whatever larva they were feeding on, to switch to something like a hopper, even when there was no surface activity, and have larger fish hammer the hopper. Again, with no hoppers to be seen. How many of us have been told by a local fly shop employee that they aren't eating anything larger than a size 20 "x", only to go get nice fish on something in a 12. Matching the hatch obviously works, but I believe observation and figuring some other tactics out on your own can lead to even more productive, satisfying days. Patterns like your Shart can be pure gold. It's not hard to understand why a large trout that may not eagerly move much to take a size 20 larva tidbit might make the move for a 14 Shart.
@@1NotAPony1 yup! There is a lot of truth in this for sure. I always try to remember that each fish is different and has its own personality. What works for one may not work for another, sometimes throwing something a bit different works out really well 👍🏻

How do you fish without polarized glasses? For the cold hands problem, I bring a small towel to dry them off, and I have a couple of those warming packets people put in their ski mittens in my wader pocket. If you buy a big pack from Costco they are pretty cheap.
My glasses were actually stolen from my car the day before I hit the river… pretty rough considering that they were prescription

I fish hot spots all the time. They probably account for 80% of the trout I catch...mostly browns. I fish Maryland. Where are you fishing? Not sure I’d know what to do in all that water! Lol. Thanks

The west in early September is pretty amazing all around
It’s certainly big water and can be intimidating and confusing if you’re used to smaller water. Once you dial it in, which took me quite a while it’s one of if not the best trout water I’ve ever fished! I haven’t fished out east much and want to make a trip next year. I did however just get back from the Cleveland area and fished for Great Lakes Steelhead (migratory rainbows) and between me and my Dad we got into 9 the one day we had to fish. Super cool new experience!

Maybe you can weigh in on this question: Is there any scenario where you might put the heavier nymph on the tag end instead of the bottom?
Yeah, everyone has a bit different perspective on this question but here is what I like to do. I will put the heavier fly on the bottom if I'm fishing deeper water but if i'm in skinny water or want the flies to fish at a similar depth I will put the heavier fly on the tag. Hope that helps!

I do normally change tactics when needed but I was running out of time on the river anyway, so I just called it early :)
