      I remembering reading an article in Goldmine about Orpheus, which stated that this song and "Can't Find The Time" were both in the top 10 or top 20 in nearly ever major radio market but not at the same time. This was due to several reasons including MGM not paying the record plants on time. The records reached individual markets sometimes as much as three months apart. This meant that the national charts like Billboard and Cashbox were not able to tabulate the chart movement because only a few markets were reporting at a time. The long and short if it was that Orpheus really had two national Top 40 hits but didn't know it. MGM knew that had messed up in '68 when they first released "Can't Find The Time" and tried again in '69 after stations began receiving requests from people who had heard "Brown Arms" on the radio and were reminded of the band's earlier hit. It was completely organic but again flubbed by the label and their corrupt management.

    Quite a story behind the composers of this song. Lesley Miller, who wrote the music for "Brown Arms in Houston," was married at the time to Orpheus producer Alan Lorber and had been the subject of the song "Lesley's World" on the first Orpheus album. Lyricist Joe Henry would emerge in 1974 as a frequent song collaborator with John Denver. Their 1975 Christmas song "A Baby Just Like You" was even recorded by Frank Sinatra as a tribute to his daughter Nancy's first child.

    Happy to have found this beautiful but rare song. I thought originally that it was short lived hit in the summer of 65; it looks not to be the case, 69 it is. Simple but strong romantic lyrics. The song was overshadowed by the rock hits of day.

      The notorious music publisher Alan Lorber, who never paid a cent in royalties, has recently lost control of much of the publishing rights to Orpheus music. In retaliation, he has removed the albums from all streaming platforms. The band is currently working on a new album and digitizing over 100 never-before-heard recordings so stay tuned to this channel and our social media pages for the latest.

    • @tolanstout
      @tolanstout 6 лет назад +2

      mysticmaverick1 It was the first song that Joe Henry, (who later collaborated with John Denver, Garth Brooks and Rascal Flats) got published. The music was written by singer/songwriter Lesley Miller who was the then wife of Orpheus producer, Alan Lorber. The song was intended for Lorber's star group Orpheus. Henry was writing about his travels across the country working odd jobs. "Brown arms" was the phrase he used to describe the people who welcomed him with an open door. As far as I know, he never revealed whether those people were of a particular ethnic persuasion - hence the color of their arms.

    • @orpheusband
      @orpheusband  3 года назад +3

      The music, written by Lesley Miller with production by her then husband Alan Lorber certainly has echoes of both Jimmy and Burt Bacharach. We recently learned that Jimmy, Burt and the great Brian Wilson followed Orpheus closely - not to mention Miles Davis, Laura Nyro, Steely Dan and the late Terry Kath of Chicago. We were an inside secret in the music business.

      @@orpheusband fantastic! Thank you so much. That's like a "who's who" of great artists, every one of whom I have admired greatly. I use to wonder why I love this song so much. But then yesterday I just happened to be revisiting Webb's hits along with this one, and I noted how the harmonies had some similarities. What you've told me certainly will have me listening more to Orpheus now! BTW, OTHER artists I revisited yesterday included...Brian Wilson, Laura Nyro and Steely Dan!

      Thanks! Yes, I'd say Burton Cummings later "borrowed" a lot from the Orpheus sound. The band's "Can't Find the Time" was a BIG hit in Cleveland, where I was at the time. Partly from airplay by CKLW in Windsor, Ontario, and partly because of airplay by WIXY in Cleveland itself. Wonderful song!

    Can anyone tell me what the lyrics of this song mean?

    • @tolanstout
      @tolanstout 8 лет назад +5

      +Monk2038 "Brown Arms In Houston" was written by a young poet / songwriter named Joe Henry who had left the University of Iowa with a Masters Degree in Creative Writing to travel the country. While moving from state to state, Henry took various jobs, which included coal miner, ranch hand, steel worker and even professional boxer. The song recounts his travels and experiences during this time. Whether "brown arms" referred to a particular racial group has never been revealed.
      Lyrics:
      Names have held me in the grey light of dawnBefore morning had come, after night time had gone
      They held me with hands that hadn’t a claim
      A claim to my life, a right to my name
      Brown arms in Houston that called after me
      Soft words in Georgia that rose from the sea
      Names twist like vines all windy and green
      That climb on the fencepost, that reach after me
      There’s Denver, Jackson, there’s Tulsa and more
      There’s none that said home, there’s none with a door
      Brown arms in Houston
      that called after me
      Soft words in Georgia that rose from the sea
      The wind’s calling me like I’ve heard it before
      I’ll leave you the morning, I haven’t much more
      Listen tonight to the soft-falling rain
      And think of my song, remember my name
      Brown arms in Houston
      that called after me
      Soft words in Georgia that rose from the sea

      +tolanstout Wow! Thank you so much. I've wondered about the lyrics for years, not just the curious title. I'd heard as many as 5 or 6 different "guesses" over the many years, none of which truly fit all the lyrics. Some maybe yes, but never all.

    • @lesleymiller5392
      @lesleymiller5392 6 лет назад +6

      Actually, to set the record straight, I, Lesley Miller, did write the music to “ Brown Arms In Houston”. Joe Henry and I collaborated on a few songs. Unfortunately, the sheet music that came out at the time listed Joe as the sole writer of both lyrics and music.

      Lyrically it's like the male version of Gale Garnett's "We'll Sing In the Sunshine". It's a traveling man who is telling his woman he will be leaving soon. He's haunted by memories of his past loves and the cities they were in.
