@@tracemontgomery5459Darryl’s voice is just so damn 80s sounding, no one sounds like him at all. Both amazing singers tho, I didn’t know Jon could sing!
John sings on a lot of their songs, especially in the earlier albums like Abandoned Luncheonette where he sings lead or co-lead on more than half the songs, including She's Gone. Many people love that album with songs sung by John like Las Vegas Turnaround, I'm Just a Kid..., etc. I have a whole playlist built of songs featuring John's vocals. Plus his songwriting includes writing or co-writing a ton of their hits.
I really like this H&O Old Grey Whistle test concert. It really shows their Philly Soul roots. Both John and Darryl are in fine voice, and the band is tight.
This album yes album got me through some hard times in Okinawa....when I was really homesick....and I go my first Dear John back in the bicentennial year....along with other albums that same year....1976! Yes John Hall and Darryl Oates are true musicians and songwriters in the truest sense of the word...I'm just a kid don't make feel like a man.....DAMN YOU TALK TO ME!
Every day for over 3 decades I ate lived breathed and disappeared with this album. Now Daryls Hiuse is the fix too...but Abandoned Luncheonette...damn. Every song has so much meaning. The music that got me through my life. Love Dsryl and John.
They've produced so much great music but AL is still my favorite- maybe some of that is nostalgia with time passing so quickly but every song is poignant and unforgettable melody
Excellent. These guys are so tight on this. Here's the real Hall and Oates, baby. If everyone could see them like this, Oates would get a lot more respect. BTW, Melody for a Memory is their best song, next to She's Gone. And it's written & sung by, of course, Johnny O!
Not sure where I saw this as a kid - I wasn't raised by H&O fans, though I converted my mom later - but I absolutely remember this concert, specifically this song, and particularly, how straight up sexy John Oates's voice was. I wouldn't have described it that way then, of course, but later... yeah. Mucho fabulous. Thanks for sharing!
This song pushed the boundaries of a “16 will get you 20” kinda vibe. Creepy but did highlight John Oates talents beyond the porn mustache. Tremendous Philly blue-eyed soul.
Saw them preform this beautiful tune live, two years ago! In my opinion...they just keep getting better and better!!! One of my all time favorites, thanks for posting!
amazing! this is my favorite song on the album. the solo before the 2nd verse knocked my socks off as did the quick stop in the 2nd verse. that band is well rehersed! excellent quality on the video too, thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing these awesome videos!!!! These guys have and always will be close to my heart...Thanks guys for the memories, filling my soul and smiles for over 35+yrs!!!!
John didn't sing lead on many of their songs. He has a great voice. I saw them perform live many times in the late 70s and early 80s. Thanks for posting.
RUclips is being dumb so it's not letting me reply to anyone, but whoever said that Oates' presence was stunted in the 80s is absolutely right. I prefer this era of H & O when it really was a 50/50 partnership. AL is my fave album. Of course I love everything else they did, but Hall was the main driving force. I wonder what more Oates could have contributed during their heyday in the 80s.
While I love their ‘80’s heyday (I ‘discovered’ them in 1982) I really do love their ‘70’s stuff. While Daryl does have the voice of an angel, John’s voice tugs at the heartstrings. 🎸
True they are melodious together. I noticed that John Oates voice can sort of "twang" the same as his voice. I used to play this 45 at Rehobeth beach delaware. It was the flip side of a more popular hit, maybe Rich Girl Joe Luh
The sound of john oates's voice could seemingly mimic the sound of his guitar riffs. this song i remember being played over and over on a juke box of a game room on the atlantic ocean in '77.
Until I saw this video I didn't realise how creepy this song is, when I heard it when I was younger I perceived it differently, still a great song though
Can really hear the vocal layering Oates contributed to the Hall & Oates sound. He was that lingering after-feel, double-take, in the vocal layering that was the signature in their MANY songs.
to VLTRP.......I think Prince looks like John Oates, not Oates looking like Prince.....I think JO is the original. I'm a Prince fan, but JO gets the vote. What a sexy song! OMG!
Does anybody know why John Oates stopped contributing vocally and even somewhat in songwriting after "Voices", when in my opinion, the group got way too commercial? I really don't get it. It was like a 50/50 or perhaps 60/40 split between them, then it became 90/10 with none of John Oates songs being released as singles. I can't find anything online anywhere. Personally, I liked John Oates more back in this era, running through their first eight albums.
I saw them in concert a few years ago. I was front row closest to John. Whenever I could I would shout to him titles of H & O songs that he sang lead. He looked at me, smiled and gave me a thumbs up! I don’t know why I didn’t faint right there on the spot!👍🏻🎸
Muito bom , Uma pena que John Oates poucas músicas cantou no decorrer da longa parceria com Daryl hall! Very good, Too bad John Oates sang few songs during the long partnership with Daryl hall!
Though this live version is outstanding, I prefer the version off the album “ Livetime” from a few years later when Elton John’s band members Roger Pope, Caleb Quaye, and Kenny Passerelli toured with them.
Charles Goose I'm not an expert, but from what I'm picking up he is reliving an adolescent (puppy love) moment. He's coming from the perspective of his early teen self wanting a girl, but stumbling and not knowing what to do or how to play this minx. He tries gets denied to than plays like he's not into her was just being friendly. Imagine grade 8 last dance trying to figure out how you can get the last dance with the class hottie, type of vibe. Just my take, hope it clears things up bra.
When this came out I was a teenager I heard the lyrics way differently. I loved it then because I was so afraid that if I acted like a man I would scare a girl off. It wasn't until years later that I became more aware and uncomfortable with the lyrics. But I still can't help but love the original recording, where the vocals also evoke shame, confusion, anger, and vulnerability. Oates's vocals here are too "bravado" in comparison, undercutting the original, and making it way creepy. But I can't help but still love the original, even though I wouldn't play it for anyone!!
Sometimes I think John Oates should get more credit than he does .
He gas a fantastic voice .
i see this comment over and over again! i think maybe ppl love him - he doesn't have the big hits like he should!
He could have made it as solo artist, but for whatever reason it was Darryl's voice that really sold the records.

This is a classicJohn rocks just as much as Daryl does. I love this
John Oates vocal blowing me away this is crazy good! Not to mention Daryl’s
I really like this H&O Old Grey Whistle test concert. It really shows their Philly Soul roots. Both John and Darryl are in fine voice, and the band is tight.
Ditto, exactly how you said
shocked at the vocal tightness on the small little ad libs (rehearsed ad libs haha)
Love this... absolute vintage! They blended so well together and the change ups on this song are wonderful.
Vintage gold.
this song is so bloody good
Awesome.
You wouldn't realize Oates is so awesome by listening to the 80's H&O. Great vocals.
Im a child of the 70's and I never heard this one before .. great song. Didnt know John had that in him.
This album yes album got me through some hard times in Okinawa....when I was really homesick....and I go my first Dear John back in the bicentennial year....along with other albums that same year....1976! Here from Enya Umanzor’s story lol I love this!

One of the greatest albums of all time.
@@SgtRock420 For sure.
My all-time favorite Hall and Oates song! I’ve always loved it. ❤️
This song has been a serious favorite since the fisrt note, but '..can't you tell the way I'm squeezing your hand.. ' is too nice. Joint is pure silk.
Great song of Daryl and Johns💖💕🌺⭐️‼️😎 legends🎶✨💕🕊️
John Oates is simply a beautiful man and a wonderful singer/vocalist.
oh yes!
John Oats had a simple plan.
Yum!
Ok grandma
great song, fantastic album, amazing performance...
@ 2:02 there's so much love in the way Daryl looks at John.
Mr. Smoothvoice, so talented, so awesome.

daaaaayuum y did u menshun melody for a memory??? now i'm gonna havv 2 look that up & postpone sleep
Me too!
So many great early sleepers from Daryl Hall and John Oates. “ When the Morning Comes” was a favorite of mine back then.
Hall and Oates are just the best!
John Oates is every way Darryl Hall's equal.
Was that ever a Question? sorry didnt mean that in a mean way, im so glad they met and it all happened perfect harmonies xx
No doubt about it.
He sure as hell is!!!
Exactly!!!!
So much talent in H&O and music styles that have stood the test of time for over 40+yrs.
i am only just finding the early hall and oates and if they are all like this glad i am- awesome song awesome voices

jealous!!
Very great song ,thank you very much for this sharing 💝 👍 💝 👍 💝 👍
This song pushed the boundaries of a “16 will get you 20” kinda vibe. Creepy but did highlight John Oates talents beyond the porn mustache. Tremendous Philly blue-eyed soul.
wow...what a great performance of a great composition....
Saw them preform this beautiful tune live, two years ago! In my opinion...they just keep getting better and better!!! One of my all time favorites, thanks for posting!
I never heard this before. Wow John sounded way better back then. Great song!
Saw them live a few times and they were utterly brilliant.
Wow! That was an awesome live version of that song. I think I like it better than the original.
The version from the “ Livetime “ album is best in my view.. Caleb Quaye on lead guitar. Superb.
Just found this song first time hearing it since 78/79. First time seeing it ever. Nice!
1.02 look of love
amazing! this is my favorite song on the album. the solo before the 2nd verse knocked my socks off as did the quick stop in the 2nd verse. that band is well rehersed! excellent quality on the video too, thank you so much!
all roads lead back to this video
Thanks for sharing these awesome videos!!!! These guys have and always will be close to my heart...Thanks guys for the memories, filling my soul and smiles for over 35+yrs!!!!
Talent personified.
Oates needs his mustache back.
it's almost there...a little stubble...
It belongs in the Smithsonian.
Omg, it's just perfect👍👍❤
John didn't sing lead on many of their songs. He has a great voice. I saw them perform live many times in the late 70s and early 80s. Thanks for posting.
one of my favorite Hall and Oates songs!!
Wish i was born in the 60s so i can see them at this concert!
A great song!
They are too cool...I love them.
John Oates your voice is so damn good you don’t get enough credit for it ove you
Outstanding vocals

Leah possession obsession. great solo by john in my opinion (i think the 7 remix is even better because of the saxaphone)

increible version, los mas grandes. Slds,Lima -Peru.
So rare ! Many thanks for finding this. Xcellent Oates!
I remember seeing this performance on the OGWT the summer I left school. great song by the best ever blue eyed soul band.
I love this song so much😍 this version is the best one!
Absolutely right.
So underrated.
thanks so much for the killer content :)
Boy is that true John can sing as good as Daryl.
And it kicks ass.
I love this song!
John oates I love your voice.
So young and so powerful!!!
Until I saw this video I didn't realise how creepy this song is, when I heard it when I was younger I perceived it differently, still a great song though
Wow 👏 back in time to the 70s. Talk to me baby......la la la 😎
I love Johns voice as much as Daryls
Great song, I just started covering it at my gigs.
Can really hear the vocal layering Oates contributed to the Hall & Oates sound.

Superb live
This song sounds kinda creepy nowadays but god damn it’s a banger.
100% creepy lyrics.
Lyrics 100% creep catchy as fuck tho
Great performance ❤❤
Awesome!

Yes he is. Love John in early days
Wow!
Need a cover version of this by Flight of the Conchords.
their best song
GOATS at play
Muito bom , Uma pena que John Oates poucas músicas cantou no decorrer da longa parceria com Daryl hall! Very good, Too bad John Oates sang few songs during the long partnership with Daryl hall!
❤
How come nobody is talking about what this song is really about? Robbin’ the cradle. Begging a underage girl to sleep with him. 😳
Sick simple plan cover!
Haven't heard this since '77...
Jamming
Aint they just the best
He even says CRADLE THIEF??!! WTF
I would love to hear Daryl Hall sing with Josh Stone I think that would be awesome who for thought Daryl
@ldybby i saw that look too! :)
Wow wow wow uhu
Though this live version is outstanding, I prefer the version off the album “ Livetime” from a few years later when Elton John’s band members Roger Pope, Caleb Quaye, and Kenny Passerelli toured with them.
Cant you tell the way i'm squeezing your hand.
Is there a dvd out of this performance?
It’s on their, ‘ Abandoned Luncheonette’ album.
you know that is freaky …
can someone tell me what this song is about please!
Charles Goose I'm not an expert, but from what I'm picking up he is reliving an adolescent (puppy love) moment. Slay not play
Mixed emotions about this one.
Learn to fly
Baba Booey on vocals
This song is so amazing but the lyrics really aged badly 🥴🥴🥴
My fav H&O song
Oh...and...That Bass!!! But...he's picking👎
I hate this song... .
This is a beautiful, real, and innocent song. Amazingly performed live.
