I can not unsee this. My favorite parts are when they casually fling money at the devil, and when Oates turns to Hall when it's his turn to lip synch, and Hall just stares off into space, refusing to fall in line. I think about this video way too much, haha! My 12 year old daughter was horrified by it, and made me promise to never show it to her again.
The Story: Shot for cheesy pop show Summertime On The Pier, it features John in a vest and bow tie, Daryl in a bathrobe, a kazoo and their co-writer Sara Allen - immortalised in Sara Smile - walking past chased by a lurex devil. John takes up the story: “The show was hosted by Ed Hurst, a real dweeb who used to be an insurance salesman. We said we just couldn’t lip-sync on it, but got told that we had to do the show. “My sister Diane was in film school, so we wrote a script. We took all the furniture from our apartment - the big armchair that Daryl sits in - and drove to this square, straight TV station. They expected us to lip-sync and as Diane was a young college girl, they didn’t want to listen to her at all.” Reluctantly, the duo got their way. “And once they saw that wacky video, that TV station got real pissed. They went to our record company and said, ‘These guys will never perform in Philadelphia again! We’ll blackball them on the radio! Their career is over!’ I think it might be the best video we ever did.” It also kickstarted Diane’s career - she’s a producer for ABC TV, won an Emmy and overseen TV coverage of three Olympic Games.
I think I posted the link to the interview somewhere. The whole explanation was quite funny. It is true that the TV station threw them out. They brought their own furniture to the studio for the shoot and only had one try at it.

@@emello4you I thought that I remembered it from 1976. Don't believe I'd even heard of Hall & Oates in 1973. I was living in South Florida at the time.
@@capturedangel139 Probably because it didn't get any air play. Look it up, '73 this video was done and definately looks like it. It did a lot better in '76.
The producer of the show wanted them to not get airplay anymore, but they did. No one forced Daryl Hall and John Oates to make this video; they chose to do it instead due to the producer trying to force them to lip-synch for an in studio, non video performance on a show they thought was lame. "Professor Of Rock" posted a John Oates interview mostly about "She's Gone" yesterday and P.O.R. did not mention or ask John about the video, plus amazingly they both said this single was released three times; it was released twice and charted twice.
John O's performance is poetry in motion. Here, they have one of the most passionate, emotional songs of the decade, or the rock era, and they're dead-panning it to death. And whoever thought of tossing play money while devil walks by, deserves a Grammy.
That person would be, Daryl Hall's 19 year old film student sister Diane. She didn't win a Grammy, but she did go on to become an Emmy winning producer.

Kathy R it was made for a "video appearance" for Steel Pier in Atlantic City, NJ. Years before MTV and band videos. It was directed by Diane Oates, John's sister. WPVI was not happy! The story of this video is told in John Oates 2017 book, "Change of Seasons-a memoir ", which is a well written book that I highly recommend.
What David and Steve said, particularly the part about the TV show. H&O didn't want to go on a TV show where they wouldn't be performing live (like almost every performance on similar shows -- I'm looking at you, Soul Train and American Bandstand).
Found the story behind this :: As it turns out, the video was an elaborate joke with very little sub-text. A “fuck you” of sorts. In a 2009 interview with John Oates, the truth came out: "Well, I’ll give you a little background about what happened with that “She’s Gone” thing. First of all, it was 1973. There was no MTV, there was no outlet for anything like this. You know, it might be one of the first music videos ever made. I really couldn’t say, honestly, but it definitely would be a contender. What happened was, we were asked to lip sync “She’s Gone” for a teenage TV dance show broadcast out of Atlantic City, New Jersey. And we really didn’t want to do that; we didn’t want to pretend to sing the song. It was supposed to be shot in a television studio in Philadelphia. So we thought, with the mindset that we were in at the time - and I won’t say more on that, either - We showed up at the television studio with a chair from our living room. The woman who’s walking through the picture - that’s Sarah… Oh, wow. And the devil who comes through was our road manager at the time. And we brought Monopoly money, and those weird instruments, and they thought we were nuts. They really thought that. My sister directed that video. They thought we were completely insane. I thought the video was pretty good. All the things in it, from the furniture, the money, the Woman, the Devil & the tuxed(turned Penguin costume) tells a story that went right over the TV producers heads. Then, when the music fades out & the Devil's sitting in the chair at the end, gives the answer to the lyric in the song "what went wrong?" That video was a great example of how creative artists of all genres in the 70s were. Besides, Hall & Oates looked pretty cool then.

It's meant to be bad. It was done as a protest against a show that wanted them to perform but also wanted them to lip sync when they always sang live. I think it's hilarious.
I'm getting a high just watching this
Daryl has the look of I just love my smack early in the morning .
So Low-brow, so low-budget, so wonderful!
haha its so bad its awesome... love hall and oates!!!
Nice shoes Darryl, looks like he's preparing for the Silver album cover-shoot.
Needs more rouge...
Omg! At first I thought this was some kind of SNL spoof . But it is a real video. I can't stop laughing. But, the more I watch it, the more I like it.( II is hilarious). I do kind of get the feeling that maybe they were forced to do the video by their record company. And they just didn't give a damn. Lol.. But as bad as the video is, the song is Amazing!
Kathy Reed actually it was their idea to do the weird ass video. I just read John’s book. The record company wasn’t happy at all. LOL
What David and Steve said, particularly the part about the TV show. H&O didn't want to go on a TV show where they wouldn't be performing live (like almost every performance on similar shows -- I'm looking at you, Soul Train and American Bandstand).
I want a gram of what they were smokin' that day
Found the story behind this :: As it turns out, the video was an elaborate joke with very little sub-text. A “fuck you” of sorts. In a 2009 interview with John Oates, the truth came out:
"Well, I’ll give you a little background about what happened with that “She’s Gone” thing.
They actually didn’t air it; they wouldn’t air it. But we had it this whole time, and eventually I leaked it out to the internet, ’cause I just thought the world should see it."
I think the first music videos ever made were the Beatles promo-films for Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane in 1967.
@@rodsmolter5046 Yes! I was wanting to say that so badly, so thank-you!
@@rodsmolter5046 Well, Elvis Presley had the Beatles beaten in that department--he had a vid for Jailhouse Rock, at least. (Probably made some others too).
I saw this video back in the day on a weird video mixtapes my friend's older brother gave me & I always wondered WTF was up with this. Thanks, now my questions have been answered that it's cuz Hall & Oates were high as kites & gave 60% less of zero fucks
2 stoned dudes on the public access channel. what could go wrong?!
I have to look at this every few months...Just because..:)
I was there at the birth of MTV, and this video is nothing short of BRILLIANCE! Hall & Oates, you are part of history!
although filmed in '73
Daryl Hall *IS* _The Man Who Sold The World_!
Tickets available NOW at the Winter Garden Theater!
still love this
Daryl Hall's hair ROCKS!!!!! Hahahahaha!
Yeah! Hall and Oats off the chain! This video was too cute. She keep walking by with the devil following her, one got a cigarette. Lol. Then the devil comes at the end ( looking crazy like he do) and shut it down. Too cute! Excellent job! 😍👍💯
Read the new John Oates autobiography. He talks all about this video!
mgrove4769 Guess who gave me this video to post!
NoCanDu WOW!COOL!!!!
the crazy part about this song is that it didn't even become a hit until 1976.
Darryl has some Bowie look going there
LMFAO!! I have to find the story behind this... haven't read all the comments but I figure it HAD to be a raised middle finger to somebody. Those shoes. Those flippers. That ridiculous devil costume. And not one smile from the stage. How did any one of them manage to play it straight? I couldn't stop laughing. Every time they just said the hell with it and quit even bothering to mouth the lyrics I was destroyed. What an utterly fantastic mess. I freaking love it!

NoCanDu I actually remember seeing this and it burned into my memory. I don't remember the show it was on though.
Did you miss the bong pipe and them hitting it during the song, CRAZY LOL.
MrRondonmon LMFAO!! I did! I missed that! I was laughing so hard I missed it... you can watch this hot mess a hundred times and still find new reasons to fall out laughing. Fantastic!
+Tommiegirl Granlund that and when Daryl absentmindedly tosses fake monopoly money to "pay the devil to replace her" ROTFLMAO!!!!
this is your brain on drugs....
Quit messing around John, you're gonna be late for your shift at Chippendale's (discount branch)!
What went wrong? Well lets see daryl forgot or didn't want to lip sync in some parts and during Johns close up he is lipsyncing daryls part and not his own Lol. They r high and a bit cranky looking too.Lol. LOVE THIS VIDEO!
I'll have what they had.
love it
Daryl Hall...the smack years
This is from 1973. They basically invented MTV
Who says things don't go better with coke? This song definitely does!
I did a homage to this video featuring Matt Jones (Badger from Breaking Bad) and Rich Fulcher (The Mighty Boosh)

I love this tune and these guys, they are baked!....:) Peace......
This has WTF dividends for, literally, two centuries.
This is your brain--high on conciliation! Jeeze! What a awesome video! The bong hit Daryl took was priceless!
Honestly, Hall and Oates is my favorite group of all time. I bought Abandon Luncheonette when it was first released. I had never heard of them, I just took a chance and I was hooked.
Im obsessed with this video. Daryl in 1974 platform sandals w loud socks . Bowie started that trend of men in meemaw mules .. One of the best blue eyed soul tunes, ever.
daryl looks like one of rod stewart's ex wives.
Love that penguin suit hahhaa, Hall & Oates forever🐧😍❤️🎶🎶🎶
Oates looks like Miguel/ Hall looks like the Man who fell to earth, First.
Banned from Philadelphia for this? I'd say WE need to BAN Philadelphia from the US of A for complaining about this mesmerizing video of exquisite high production values!!!
Gotta love Hall and Oates they were before their time 70s rocked I’m a 70s baby they not singing they having fun smoking and lord knows what else lol but I love them that Oates dark hair and handsome :)
I came here after reading Oates' book. He's not wrong.
Now i know where they got the inspiration for David Bowie's hair in Labyrinth.
Dude's rocking the socks and sandals thing before it was cool. Props for that.
When were socks and sandals cool?
I watch this like 5 times in a row at least once a month..
If you want to destroy some brain cells might as well drink hard liquor
what can't be unseen...
i gotta watch it again.
this video is so damn weird. but i love it.
I must admit that I love this video. The song is great. It's the song I always sing when I'm riding a horse that I'm nervous about. My singing is so god awful that I start to relax because I'm laughing at myself. Sometimes I frighten the horse with my singing though.
Still one of my absolute favorite concept videos in the entire world not to mention the fact that God damn the two of them were so freaking Young
Lovin' the footwear :)
One of my fave 70's songs
A clip of this video actually aired during a Hall & Oates interview on NBC's "Friday Night Videos" back in 1983/84.
This has to be one of the most bizarre yet amusing music videos I have seen. I'm glad that they finally put it on RUclips to let fans see it.
Ahh the 70s...complete with orange shag carpet...their homage to Philly Soul! Love it!
Now I know who the Flight of the Conchords have been imitating in just about every video they've done.
I dunno about Flight of the concords...but I definitely get a whiff of the Mighty Boosh looking at this video :D With John Oates as Julian and Daryl Hall as Vince...just chilling above the Nabootique...
The PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE of music videos.
“But, Poodle!”
Holy shit, I'm having a major acid flashback right now!
Jimmy Snuka and Ziggy Stardust made a great duo.
Hahaha
@36028 You're partially correct. The song was indeed written by H&O and first released on their 1973 album Abandoned Luncheonette. This song would be covered by Lou Rawls and Tavares before Atlantic Records re- released the Hall & Oates version as a single in 1976.
