When l first lived in ltaly, I could never understand why l would end up moving backwards around the room at every party l went to. After a few months l finally realised it was because, culturally, our personal space sizes were different. Italians have smaller personal spaces than Anglo Saxons. My friends would be talking to me but, to my subconscious, they would be standing too close so l would unconsciously move back, then for them l would be too far away so, they would move forward and the process would repeat until l found myself once again, literally, backed into a corner. I remember the first party l went to after l realised what was happening and how novel it felt to pick a spot and stand my ground.
