not quite the same but I used to play a game with myself when I was bored in class and try and count the amount of change I had in my pocket by touch, then I moved on to my bunch of keys to memorise by touch also, and it's surprising how fast the fingers can "see" things. I had 5 house keys (different doors and aunts house too) and I took a lot of pleasure taking out the right key without looking and having it fit straight in the lock

That first fact about Queen Victoria and how they had to make her re-do it is genuinely so British I love it. I mean it's horrible the bloke skipped the bit but still, put it in a sketch you'd get a good laugh
Here in the US Pres. Obama had to retake his oath of office (first term, 2009) because Chief Justice Roberts screwed up a line causing Obama to slightly miss the exact wording of the oath. It was redone the next day, just to make sure everything was proper and legal.

This will sound weird, but I'll feel a lot more confident about whether I've bought something fancy enough for my family for Christmas knowing that the Queen was quite happy with a casserole dish and an apron.

George VI, Edward VIII (not issued), and George V coins ALL face left. Edward broke the tradition because he thought his left was his best side. After the abdication his wish was ignored and it was treated as if his coin had followed tradition and faced right, despite the fact that the few coins that were minted actually faced left.

I have read that Edward VIII, instead of facing the opposite way from his father, George V, chose to use the profile he personally preferred and THAT was thought to be a bad omen. I suppose it didn't help that, before he passed on, George V said that "the boy" would ruin himself in a year after he, George V, died. He was only off by a very few months.
That's correct, and the Royal Mint Museum has some of the pattern coins that were struck. When George VI became king, they just sort of pretended that Edward would have faced right, and so George VI faced left.

over here in US, everyone faces to the left on our coins unless you get one of those weird special nickels that has him facing outwards

The bit about the way we think the Queen faces on coins is perhaps due to so many being right-handed makes sense to me, as I really struggle to draw a face in profile unless it is facing to the left (I’m right handed)

It's a process other than handedness, I think.
Today I learned poor King Eddie was come and gone so fast, he never even had coins minted of him.
There were actually a few pattern coins produced, but they were sealed up in a safe in the Royal Mint after the abdication for several decades out of embarrassment. They weren't found again until the '70s, I think.
@@P99AT That's correct. Had he stayed on the throne long enough for them to be issued, he would have broken the tradition of alternating the portrait direction because he preferred his left profile. When George VI assumed the throne, he faced left like his father, so they could say that had Edward had coins issued, he would have faced right to keep the tradition.
There were, however, stamps issued with Edward VIII's portrait. With a few exceptions, the monarch has always faced left on the stamps.
Don't be too sorry for him: he was a Nazi sympathizer.

i would have drawn the queen facing right, and im left handed, but i doubt it has anything to do with that since I just find it's pretty easy to visualise the coins

The ceiling in the White Drawing Room - also known as the large Drawing Room - is 14ft. 6in high. It would be impossible to have a 20ft. tree in there.
They actually have one which just touches the ceiling in the window alcove on the West side nearest the Small Drawing Room.
in addition there are another eleven trees scattered at various locations around the House.
And Steven Fry has been there on a number of occasions as guest of the Prince of Wales - so he should know the height of the Large Drawing Room.
Obviously... Not to mention other vital information like their shoe sizes and how it's hanging...

Surely the way we think the queen faces is to do with drawing in profile. If you’re right handed you would tend to draw the face facing left as it’s much easier. As right handedness far outnumbers left handedness that would account for the figures.

It isn't the coronation that makes somebody the monarch. The person who is next in line to the throne becomes the monarch upon the death of the previous monarch. The present British monarch didn't have her coronation until the summer of 1953, more than a year after she became queen.

Philip was a prince of Greece _and_ Denmark. And when you see pictures of him when he was young, he definitely didn't look Greek-unless you know a lot of ethnic Greeks with naturally blonde hair.

Twinings was brand of tea that Stephen had done a series of adverts for.
Also, the brand has had the ‘royal warrant of approval’ since 1901.

Stephan was doing a series of adverts for Twinings Tea (mostly advertising teabags) on the TV at the time I believe.
