    To bake the pie crust, if you'll be making a baked pie, like pumpkin bake according to your pie recipe. If you need a baked pie shell, bake at 475 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Cool then fill with filling.

      Using butter instead of lard or other oils makes all the difference in the world if you want your pie and pie crust to be enjoyable!!! Conventional pie crusts, (prefab types) lack flavor and make the pie far less palatable........

      Do you have any videos about baking the crust? Do you poke it? Do you use Pie weights? Also off topic but is there a difference in baking times when using a glass dish? I’d like to attempt this for thanksgiving! Thanks so much for this recipe!!

    • @frugalfamilyhome
      @frugalfamilyhome  3 года назад +2

      @@joebaby1975 Sorry I didn't see this in time for Thanksgiving.
      I don't have a video about baking a pie shell. For pies like pumpkin pie, or a crumble topped apple pie, you don't pre-bake the crust. Just add the filling and bake.
      For cream pies, like banana cream, you'd bake the pie crust first and let cool. I bake mine at 475 for 8-10 minutes then cool. I prick the pie crust with a fork before baking and then bake. I don't use pie weights.
      I do have a video for baking a raspberry pie that shows how to make a double crust pie if that is what you are looking for. Here's the link, ruclips.net/video/F9m1Vr4CCyw/видео.html
      I hope that answers your questions. I've always used a glass pie plate because that is what I have. I'm not sure about difference in baking times since I don't use metal pie pans.
      Let me know if you have any other questions, I'll do my best to help.

Long form videos without excessive cutting and distracting music are the best instructional videos. You know what you did right, imho? When the dough was a bit dry, you didn't pour extra water on the already wet part. You went to the part of the bowl that had the dry stuff and sprinkled the water there. Too many folks just keep adding it to a wet part and then think they can just knead it a bit to get it dispersed. I think you know what you are doing. Good to see that!

      You bake it untill its firm but not all the way as to not make the dough burn when you put it back in the oven to cook the filling in the oven

    Update: this crust is amazing! I tried another recipe for Christmas and it did not turn out so I couldn’t make my grandpa’s pie and I was so sad! I decided to give it another go and this recipe was perfect! I love your video and it was nice not having to chill the dough in the icebox for hours or even overnight! Thank you so much for sharing! My pecan pie was a HUGE hit!!!
    Giving this a go! Wish me luck!

    Amazing, this would be why my dough gets so tacky. I use all the water that the recipe calls for instead of adding just enough to keep the dough together, thank you!

    So this was pretty easy and the visual was great of how you incorporated the shortening. I put my dough in a plastic bag and rolled it out so I did not have the extra flour mess. My daughter is picking all the sides off the veggie pot pie I made. She remarked how good it is and I have to say its quite good. Thanks

    Do we have to pre-bake before adding our filling? And how do I prep if I want to prepare in advanced and freeze for a few days?

    • @christina7088
      @christina7088 5 лет назад

      You bake with the filling in it. And you wrap the dough in plastic wrap and freeze in a ball.

    Hello and thanks for making this tutorial !
    I'm planning to make my very first pumpkin pie next week :) and I'd like to know, if I have to pre-bake the pie dough before actually baking the pumpkin pie (with the pumpkin and the spices).
    Hope you could help me with that,
    Andrea

    • @frugalfamilyhome
      @frugalfamilyhome  8 лет назад +7

      Andrea Mano For a pumpkin pie there is no need to precook the crust. Place your crust into the pie pan and then add your pumpkin pie filling and bake. You only need to pre-bake the crust if you won't be baking the pie in the oven, for pies like pudding or lemon meringue. I hope your pie turns our great!

    I’d like to use butter for this dough. Should it be soft like the shortening or should it be cooler?

    • @frugalfamilyhome
      @frugalfamilyhome  6 лет назад +4

      If you are using butter and it is cold, it could be a little harder to pinch in at first. But should work fine. If it seem to hard to work into the flour, then you might try letting it sit out for a bit to soften. But I've found once you start pinching the butter in it soften up quickly.

    What a cute video! Thank you!
    P.S. To avoid dairy, you can use "leaf" lard (snow white, odorless lard with a "clean" flavor) instead of Crisco or other trans fat version. (Cuz that stuff will kill ya! Type II diabetes, arteriosclerosis, and osteoporosis are just the beginning of problems that come from artifically hydrogenated fat.)
    Thanks for a great video!
