    hey Ronnie another great clip.
if you pop rivet a sheet of alum on to the inside of your side gates and use a wire on the ends you could have them horizontal it would give you more bench space.it looks like your pull out draw has enough room under it to do this.
dont know if it will work but its more bench space for bugger all weight gain

Yesterday i saw the all4adventure 79 series build. While it's nice and I can appreciate the work done, I think they have missed the mark with what a 4x4 should be. This is where I think you have succeeded and created a vehicle that truly captures what 4x4 exploration is about. Well done, and thanks for the content.

I know you're much younger and fitter than me....but I've gone away from axes. I now carry a makita 36v chain saw. It uses the same batteries as the impact wrench and drill that I also carry and given that you already have an inverter, charging of the batteries would be easy-peasy. Yes, the chain saw is a bit bulkier, but wouldn't be much heavier than all those axes and little hand saws you carry. Just need to add a small bottle of chain lube. Great job!!

I am heading that route, I have all ready mounted a 12v Makita Battery charger and 18v cordless drill, angle grinder and a vacuum that all work off the same 18v batteries and all ready carry 2 batteries, have considered the chainsaw but will only add it after I have needed it once.

Good video Ronny, I did a trip to Cape York in July & like you keep coming up with new changes to make to my 79 Dual cab. The next which is under construction as we speak is a box similar to yours but it will have just the Engel, recovery gear & luggage in it. I tow an Ultimate Camper trailer so am self contained. That way, behind the box will be the spare tyre & another small custom made box for 4 jerry cans(diesel & water). I need space at the back of the tray as it still is a farm vehicle. I added a 60L water tank prior to the Cape trip under the tray, no pump just gravity feed, works a treat! You can never carry too much water

great box idea mate. the first of every product is never the end product but ye are very close. why not change your rear bar work for Aluminium and have a security screen mesh on top, adds rigidity and allows for stuff to be bolted on everywhere. another tip would be to have two seperate rear box/tray setups altogether that you just forklift on the one you want for each specific trip ? love the content mate. top job.

I suspect the kitchen instalment for project black will involve some sort of box for the fridge as it seems strange having it exposed to the elements. Very nice work by the way; I like esp. the 2 water pump design. I would have widened the water pipe end bit to also leave the inline filter in :-)

Really nice work and very functional. You should look into rolling beads into the aluminum panels that make up the box, especially the larger pieces and definitely the one that has the BMS and inverter attached. Rolling a bead can take a floppy piece of sheet metal from zero to hero! It will make them so much stronger and also help reduce vibrations.

I love the space for the camera gear. That is the thing we struggle with more than just about anything else. No chance of us doing anything similar though as we have such different vehicles. The two water pumps are great. We have done that in our various rigs over the years. It seems that there is little difference between 4x4s and motorhomes when it comes to doing mods, they never end.

hey Ronny, i made a single sided back loop for a mate once. just get the one you have now and cut the middle bar out and join the two ends (hoops) and you will have a uniform single sided hoop. can also add a crossbar for spare tyre, canvas bags or a jerry can.

Hi Ronny, not sure if you've thought about doing an episode on your tech gear, cameras used, backups, laptops used, editing software etc. What works, what doesn't, what you've tried in the past and stopped using and what you would like to use in the future. Might not be all current subscribers cup of tea but it might interest some like me and might get some good hits on RUclips from non subscribers depending on the key words/title, and they could very well convert to subscribers.

I hope all your drives are SSD (Solid State Drive) Ronny. SSD drives are immune to the vibrations caused when off road... Conventional hard drives are not and although laptop drives "park" the read/write heads when not in use, you're still risking your data with them. I also hope you have several external SSD drives and are making a backup of the backup.... Love the new system too, so practical and easy to use. Great video as always.

I think I get where you're coming from. To produce more regular videos quick enough to keep the momentum, its handy for on the road video editting set up. Tis like an on the go office. You already have the experience and feel for shooting the videos, so you know exactly what you want which leads to less editting required. Once you get back from any trips, you are more or less ready to upload I suppose. Efficiency is the key. Your vehicle mods is also strong enough to carry trailer, so sweet as eh, no drama pulling the X1.

Alcohol bottles are very reliable, i have never had a leaky bottle. I'm sure Ronny, with all his experience, would not put liquids with electronics if he had any doubts about the potential risk, they look pretty cosy in those foam cubbies. I would bet it is only a temporary novelty while the rebuild continues too.

Hi Ronny, another good development in the saga of the ongoing build. Few points/questions.
1)- have you ever considered a custom roof top tent for the back of the tray (ie one on a lower custom tray frame which means the large tent doesn't stick above the height of the front cab - less air resistance when driving)?
2)- I think that top drinking section with the bottles and glasses would look great with a custom very thin red gum flip up cover (more of a bar feel and more protection for the glass)
3)- I really like the look of the axe section mate, but it's just not practical. I have ridden 3 horses across Australia with just pack saddles (were weight is truely limited) and I found the best bit of kit I had for my daily cooking fires was a simple hand saw from Bunnings - light, able to cut through any logs logs faster than any axe and cheap).

Been waiting for this vid. Well done, lots of thought into this build. I reckon youve got it right. Heaps of weight of the very back, more when you lose the rear spare, weight now forward of the axle... heaps better handling, more fuel economy ( particularly with 1 less diesel tank), more clean water....great ! ps grog storage needs more thought.

cant you slide the awninngs from the front roof backwards (while camping) and just support them with an slim mobile frame?

  • @philipburrows
    @philipburrows 5 лет назад

Have a look at using aluminium frames for your pullout covers (hornings/warnings).
Moving your second spare wheel to be with the first spare wheel is a good idea for reducing overhang weight on the back.
    Love the video's.
    Philip from st Helens, England.

  • @Mickale-Moranis
    @Mickale-Moranis 5 лет назад

An idea for your top frame aspect, I would look at a wrap around soft cover over your whole back end. It would be aerodynamic for your highway travels, make your woods travel better to keep limbs out between your tubes, etc. It framing is not much but with multiple ribs closer together, it could easily hold your solar panels. US military trailers have a fiberglass square post setups that are 2.5-3' span. If you were to take the span and make it tighter, it would still be lightweight, able to hold weight up, and keep everything under the canopy weather protected. With a canopy on the outside, pop-up wings could be used as awnings to protect your electronics and you. To expand the awning for more area coverage, [you can do a dual plane canopy on the pop-up wings, similar to your wood counter under your drawer. One under the other. Pull the underside out to get more area coverage.

Looks good. Its a good thing you mentioned weight as im currently still in saving phase for my next 4by but i want to do drawer system etc. Id like ideally a d/c ute but may end up with a wagon again. Rather than a later model wagons im looking earlier mid to late 90s model purely due to the fact of rear wheel carriers just for ease. This however will then make my drawer system etc a tad more tricky by trying to keep weight down. Ill also be sticking with factory alloys rather than steelies and just fitting muddys to them.
Been following you since day dot and picked up alot of wee pointers that have made me think more differently than just following a trend so thank you for that. I hope to see more great content for many more years. :-)

I'm keen for a similar setup but as I have a ratty single cab daily driver.... make a small 'dog box' on the chassis for water, fridge and storage. Short tray for a demountable camper. Move the spare wheels as needed. That way if I'm with my car, I'm with my fridge. Between yourself and ASW I'm educated and very entertained.

Idea for the awning you could take the frame off and make a swing out alloy frame off the roof rack so that when the awning is stowed away it's going from drives side to passenger side like side to side of the car so it would look like you have a rear awaning on the back of the roof rack then swings out on the drivers side and lock in to still function as you have it now

Stick few of silicone cabinet door bumpers underneath the lithium battery, they absorb micro vibrations to certain extend. Please don't remove the bar, it's cool and it's Sleipnir signature design.
    As for the awning perhaps:
    a) sliding awning? mount it on the roof rack and slide it backward before opening them or
    b) carry portable canopy tent
For the rear most spare tyre, don't put too much air in it, non-inflated tyre slighter XD!! You have air compressor with you all the time.

Hi Ronny, great move with lightening the load - especially the boxes and structures used to house your gear. Vibration is a big killer, so the idea of dampening surfaces with rubber sounds very promising. Wondering if the second rear box (which I thought you mentioned?) along with new front box could be used as mounting points for the awnings? Maybe you can reinforce the aluminium structures with some steel uprights (suitably coated to avoid electrolysis) to take the load of the awnings? Another possibility for the supports is to use ply-board, reinforced with aluminium all sandwiched together with epoxy resin in place of the steel?

Hi Ronnie, great vid as usual. Could you fit a 180 or 270' awning to the back edge of the roof rack you have over the cab of the cruiser to cover the slide out? Not sure if anyone makes a small enough 270' awning to go across the car width ways but could be another project for you. Or you could fit a normal awning to a bar that swings out from the back of the cab and slots with a leg into a hole in the tray, abut like the how some of the drifta trailers mount their shower tent.

The awnings should not mounted lenghtwise, but in the same direction as youre new sliderbox. Give then an Outer pivotpoint and when you need them; turn them out, put a pole underneath to support them and roll them out. This was you can shorten youre backside of the car and put even more utility to youre project black.
You are going in the right direction, lighter and more utilitarian. Now a fuel/cost efficiënt motor in there and you are a true expidition monster!

You could have an aluminum tube rack built to replace the current steel rack. Just make it strong enough to support your awnings, and solar. The tire could be mounted to a deck somehow, rather than the rack itself off the rear.

A lot of commenters are missing the point here. A box, and drawers are certainly not new. Lots of people make them out of plywood, which is heavy and a waste of space. Ronnie's setup is extremely lightweight, and well organized. And the tank setup is great for extended range travel, and located in an ideal location for heavy tanks.

"wiz bang" LMAO.... I see your point, but its aluminium not a full carbon mono-shell.

Nice rig. Would’ve been cool if this was uploaded yesterday in time with the all 4 adventure rig

Nice rig, but Ronny ditch the double-bit axe! They are useful in the hands of a professional on green timber. It is extremely dangerous on deadwood (as is any axe if it rebounds.) You don’t want to risk wounding yourself badly while in the outback just because the axe looks gnarly. If you look closely in the video, where you are using it to remove a deadfall, the one blade comes very close to your back.

Nice point, spoken from experience obviously. I've used axes to do things plenty of times, but never a double-edge and wouldn't even consider taking one with me. I think Ronny has it for its 'look'.

In Australia we carry the double head axe for backpackers in the outback

Yeah, the double axe is the only thing where I think "why"? One sharp forest axe should do for splitting, for cutting timber a saw is much more efficient. I keep my axes sharp enough to shave with... (not that I would _actually_ shave with one).

Ronny , by the comments about your double ended toy lol I think you should ditch it for a custom Ronny leatherman 🤙🤙🤙

I can see these boxes being very popular as kitchens. Good design great weight saving. Have you any ideas of doing things inside the cab. Your Patreon video showed everything just piled on the seat. Next area for work perhaps I saw a South African company is doing storage racks that fit behind the seats great for spare part storage. All them things you need to carry but hope you don’t need
