By 1967, the baby boomers were starting to have families of their own, and big, full-size cars like Ford Galaxies were flying off the showroom floors by the hundreds of thousands. Performance car enthusiasts now had a variety of smaller, powerful pony cars to choose from, like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. And while Ford offered high-performance versions of it’s full-size family cars for years, the sales numbers of the big-inch big cars was declining. Our ‘67 Galaxie 500 XL is fitted with the 7-Litre Sports Package and hides a legendary V8 under the hood, and is one of only a handful and a half ever built.
The 7-Litre Sport Package started with the 345 HP 428 cubic inch V8 as the cornerstone, available with an automatic or a 4-speed manual transmission. However, this just one of 8 made with the R-code 427, a 425 HP specially built powerplant that sucked air and gas through 2 4-barrel carburetors, smashed the mixture in high compression heads, and blew out the smoke through header-like cast iron manifolds. It wringed out nearly 500 ft. lbs. of torque and sent it through the toploader 4-speed down to the 3.50 gear equipped rear axle, ready to launch this XL sized XL off the line with authority.
The plush interior of this 7 Litre is like a high-speed rumpus room, all jazzed up with the XL series bucket seats and wood grain steering wheel, and more red landscape than the surface of mars. Cool vertical wood grain inserts run up and down the door panels, and the long center console is capped with a spacy 4-place indicator light set. There are surprisingly few gauges, but the curious speed redline still graces the speedometer.. it was a Ford thing of the mid ‘60s. It’s a big, roomy, comfortable place to mash the gas and row the gears.
The long, sleek lines of this swingin’ ‘60s luxo cruiser are highlighted by the fastback rear design, and how everything else leans forward, suggesting speed and power. 7-Litres rolled on wider steel wheels with mag-style caps snapped in place, and front disc brakes have the unenviable task of stopping the big ride. Redline tires accent the bright red paint, their stripe echoed in the 7-Litre’s thin white pinstripe that runs the whole length of the car. There are a few exterior badges, but nothing blatantly obvious like a billboard stripe to warn the others of a 427 lurking in their midst.
Driving this car is an experience like few others, as the suspension is soft, and you can really feel the car’s size as you wheel it through the turns. Lifting the clutch and stomping the gas creates a fore-aft rocking as the super 7 squats under the torque, and you better have a clear road head, because this car is going to own it.

WOW ! Thanks for posting. This was my high school car (class of 72)! Same exterior, black interior, automatic AND factory a/c. Genuine, no-kidding torque monster 428. Had worked with a local Ford dealer for a "gently used" Holman and Moody 427, but parents being who they were, said "no". That said, the 428 was a "flying mile" car (at 18, I felt invincible, meh), and I bent the speedometer needle (a couple times). LoL, my dad was upset I was paying 38-cents/gal for premium fuel. LOVED that car !!!
Cool story! Thanks for sharing!
Have driven a factory 66 7 litre. 428, bull nose toploader 9" Brakes 12" rotors with 4 spot Kelsey Hayes and 11" rear drums. 427s rev, the 428 is torquier and smoother and still goes quite quick. Red/ black trim.
The 1967 Ford Galaxie is the best looking full size car from that era IMO.
Yes, the XL, LTD, and Country Squire wagons had die-cast grills, not the tin-pot chrome of the 500 and lower models
My dad bought a red 67 XL with a 390 off the showroom floor 3 months before I got my drivers license, loved that car, I wish we still had it
I had a 69 XL with a not so mild and nowhere near stock 390 around 500hp 525ft lbs torque. It was a beast. Never lost with it
As a (mostly) Chevy guy, I've gotta say... damn that's one fine-looking Ford.
In the 80’s we were searching for rides like this as A:they were dirt cheap, and B: they were donor engines for various projects. This car is truly a survivor
In a Galaxie far far away, lives a monster... ..and i want one
Always loved the styling of the 1967 Ford Galaxy and it still looks really sharp!
That's one beautiful old girl. The lines, paint, interior................no wonder these things keep climbing in price.
Nothing finer than a Ford Galaxie. About as red white and blue as it gets.
I really love old muscle cars,. And thought I had seen them all. This proves me wrong. Nice car great sleeper
We had a 67 Galaxie as our family car when I was a kid. Had a 390 for barrel under the hood. Cherry red just like this one.
This was my high school car 72-76...albeit with a 390 4v automatic. Fun times!
0228mustang
My high school car was a 66 Fairlane 2 door Hardtop with 289. Definitely still miss that car.
And plenty of room for making out!
Just awesome a man sized behemoth with power to match
In high school, late ‘70’s a friend of mine had white ‘67 Galaxy wagon with a 390 4 barrel engine. Practical and fun!
They need more wagons on this channel.
My sister in law had a 390 mustang GT rag top and you had to unbolt the motor mount and jack the motor up sideways to change the spark plugs. I told my brother to sell it to me instead of trading it in but he traded it in on a luxury leMans Pontiac while I was out of town working.
@@joecucch8261 I had a Sumbeam tiger for a while. To get to the back spark plugs of the small block Ford V8, you had to open trap doors in the firewall and access them via the car's interior.
I like all muscle cars, but the full-size ones have always been my preference. Galaxie, Impala SS, Wildcat, Grand Prix, Sport Fury, nothing better than all that power combined with great looks and room to breathe.
jim colegrove agreed. Have a big thing for 300’s
I agree...390/406/427 Ford's, 409 and 396/427 Chevy's, and 389/421 Pontiac's are where it's at. I love the full size performance cars. I'd love to have a 1955-58 Chrysler 300...the original American muscle car
A buddy's mom had one with the 390. It could really go. Cool car.
Beautiful car
My Aunt was a Ford lady going back to the 40's, 50's and up to her last Ford a 1979 LTDII. But the car I remember most was her 1967 Galaxie 500 4 dr sedan. It had the base 289 2 barrel engine. Was white with a red interior. Very solid well built car.
The 1965-67 Ford Galaxies are gorgeous classics, and have been somewhat underappreciated for a long time. I think the 1965-67 GM mid and full size cars, some of the best looking American cars ever, tend to overshadow them.
The '67 Galaxie fastback is one of my dream cars.
The 427 must make it a real hoot to drive!
Excellent, another classic. The interior and the Galaxies external chrome are both fabulous. That is a seven litre power house indeed. Well done!!!!
My dad had a Galaxie from that era when I was a kid, I thought it was the coolest car ever.
LOVE my 67 Galaxie 500. Currently a 289 but I foresee a BOSS 429 in the very near future....,
429 will be cheaper, but the 427 FE is the better engine, if you can afford it. Aftermarket blocks will allow as much as 526 cu. In.
owned a1967 390 my self love that car
that old Gal is still a beautiful thing 👍
There were actually 24 r code 67 galaxies. There were also 4 r code LTD’s in 67 as well.
Drew Tooker thanks for INFORMATION...
Had a bad 68 XL with the 428 and factory 4 speed. Black body red interior, buckets and factory console. No power steering or power brakes,no A.C. Just one beautiful car. It had some really long legs going thru the gears.
She's one heavy "good time gal." What a gorgeous restoration job. These big Fords are so damn rare these days with or without the 427s.
My best friend had a 66 Galaxie 7 Litre (428) convertible with four speed in the aquamarine color when we were in high school In the early 70s.It was a good condition and he paid $300 for it LOL. He sold it because it was too expensive to do a brake job on the Borg Warner front discs,Years later I found out it was one of 18 made
My parents had a ‘67 four door, and the ‘67s remain my favorite of all Galaxies. This one is just beautiful.
Holy Cow!! I just saw this exact car, albeit barn fresh/unrestored, featured on the Barnfinds website, a few weeks ago. Apparently long gone, as the ad was expired. You can keep your Hemi Cuda's and Copo Camaro's, this beast checks all the boxes, for me.

I'm a Pontiac guy through and through, but this car is BAD ASS.
Love it. There is nothing better in a '60s Ford than a dual quad, solid lifter 427 with a 4 speed. I'd have to do something about that rear end though.
@butchtropic ; Not of you saved the old parts.
Right on, Kevin. Thanks.
My friends parents had a 69 LTD with a 429, from a 60 mph roll, nothing could Touch it, it was long legged, you could hit passing gear at 90 and it would shift at 120 mph and keep on pulling.
One really rare 1967 full size FORD was a Country Squire with the 428 where just over 1000 were made but a Special Order version had the bucket seats and console with a 4 speed manual.
It's the only 428 wagon with a 4 speed out of FORD's total vehicle production that year of just under 1,000,000 .
I have a wrecked one. Lots of good parts available. 390 with auto.
That car is a beautiful work of art
Wow - Stunning - the most beautiful Ford ever designed - imho. Yes, I had one, not that engine though.
These are unforgetable....class, style and power, never to be seen again....computer controlled engines can never stir the heart and excite the senses like the big block brawlers of the 60s, by any manufacturer!
Even a quarter mile road trip. Kevin you are too funny. You have excellent narration skills.
My cousin had a Galaxie XL with a 390 HO and 4 speed. Certainly not in the class of the 427 monster, but it would get up and go. Out ran many 396's.
Wow ... what a car!
Sweet ride and fast to boot,
That's one great looking car and awesome power
that's my favorite car in the collection it and the green one. 👍
Wow! I love the old Fords!🇺🇸
We had a '67 Galaxie fastback that was exactly the same except for the drivetrain components that were totally ordinary.
I'd take a 427 Galaxie over any Mustang. My favorite is the 63 1/2 Galaxie 427 but this 67 is beautiful. I know technically it's a full size car but anything with a Ford R-Code 427 is definitely a muscle car. I'm 6 foot 4 so I appreciate the room of a full size car. A Mustang is a little too cramped for me
Yes, you've got to be able to fit in them.
Jeremy Thompson yes, I had a GAS STATION Acquaintance WITH THE 1963.5 427/4 speed,black/ black: pretty awesome : unknown how he done at US30/Abilla Dragways, etc... Blew engine early...in 1964?Anyhow, it was a pretty car: even though standard Galaxie.....ps: I had a FORD 1966 BURGANDAY XL 4 SPEED/352 ( THOUGH NICE Cruiser with UPGRADES/ Brakes/ tires/Shocks, really necessary:: ps I had to buy COOLANT recovery system at FORD DEALER ,BEFORE the good quality System really available at Auto Parts.( 1967? Maybe) around Northern INDIANA, WARSAW..or at least Dealers had a Fitting for Fords....
This is my dream car
Lol....best Drive-In car ever. The paying riders rode carriage, the freebies rode baggage.....I miss these cars soooooo much.
Never again will they happen....
She's a beauty.
hell yes boss.. keep those big Fords coming...
loved it... 👌
ICBW, but it seems that Jay Leno said he talked his father into ordering one of these back in the day. Jay was "helping" with the order sheet, and checked the "muffler delete" box without his father's knowledge. His dad wasn't too pleased about that, but Jay found out later that his dad had gotten a speeding ticket (or two?) in it, so apparently he learned to like it pretty well. Great car and great video!
The 63-67 Ford Galaxie 427's are my favorite full size performance cars ever made...particularly the 63 1/2. Pontiac and Chevy built some awesome full size muscle cars too in those days like the Catalina 2+2 and the big Chevys with the 409 and 396/427 engines. I like the big performance cars just as much or more than the intermediate size muscle cars and pony cars
My '68 Ford Galaxie's owner's manual also listed the 427 as an optional engine, but if anyone knows of such a beast, please let us know.
Ed Turner 68 was the last year for the 427, by then they were detuned to a "mere" 390HP. Lol. I had a buddy who had one years ago, they were pretty rare, I've never seen one since.
The only car I actually know of to get the 427 in 68 was the Mercury Cougar GTE 7 Litre. It was the single 4 barrel 390 horse version with hydraulic lifters. But the 427/390 was replaced mid year by the 428 Cobra Jet
Jeremy Thompson The 427 was available through 68 in just about anything except a Falcon.
@@wyo1446 Maybe so. But try to find me any 1968 Ford model with a 427 other than an early production Mercury Cougar GT-E 7 Litre. They don't exist. The 428 CJ replaced the 427 mid year 1968
I remember when the 7 litres came out. They were awesome. I wanted one so bad but I was trying to squeak my way through my last year of high school. I was able to get a red 66 Mustang with a 289/4bbl/4 spd. the next year, though
A 7 Litre Galaxie is totally high end for a kid coming out of high school. The Mustang with the 289 4V V8 was an excellent choice for you.
Absolutely stunning 'ole muscle car. My gaaawwwwd would I LOVE to have 1 of those!
Sweet! THIS was first car in ‘83, taking my starter wife to the prom in it as well in ‘86, lol.
It was yellow gold, (Dad pulled the 428 and installed a 351M before I was handed the keys in ‘83) with beautiful black XL interior. Only when cleaning the dash did I discover it had a factory 8 track, (dad didn’t know as well).
The steering wheel was just like the Brothers Green “67 and cracked-just like there’s I assume.
Try changing a heater core on one of these! No need for A/C with the winding vent windows too!
Thx Kev!
I’m not a Ford guy, Chevy guy, Mopar guy... You get the idea. I’m a cool car guy, and that Ford is cool.
Just think if this incredible collection was just one maker. It wouldn’t be as great. It just wouldn’t. 🏁
Kevin I just LOVE this High Performing ‘67 XL. I was Never big on the ‘67 Styling I think the wheel covers on the Galaxies turned me off and the very busy grill that bent easy. But Man, who can say NO to this Beauty Kevin. WOW.
awesomeeeeeeee love this model
I had the ltd version of this car, mine had the 352 though.
Love it, even with its open Diff. Thanks for Sharing.
That's a great rare car!
66gta fairlaine and the 67 galaxy were my fav when the came out and are to this very day!
What a beautiful car 📢
This is the most awesome car of all
Badass!!
Just something about that car, love it.
Woot,I had a 67,white with a 289.loved that car.
Hello. I have to say that american cars from the 60's and early 70's are beautifully designed inside and outside and I love the sound of those V8 . Here in Europe it is other history.
Freaking nice car !
I just scored I 66 with a 352 4-barrel peeling rubber I can only imagine this baby
Always thought 67 Galaxies were the best looking full size Ford ever; loved the one year only grille that was similar to a Cadillac too. I read someplace that 67's are sortof uncommon as Ford had a big strike that year so they were way down on production.
imagine drive this car listen "hotel california" and road cost california. whith this 427 big block, perfect drean
Luis Paulo Lerizzi, I lived your dream driving first a '55 Chev, with a 301, then a '63 Chev impala 409 425 horse, a '67 olds 442 350 horse, a '69 big block 435 horse 427 camero, and a '73 350 modified Z-28 camero, this was from 1960 - 1975, these were all street and strip cars with the exception of the '73 Camaro. Best years of my life, when it came to street driving fast cars.
@@olderthanyoucali8512every car this list is great, i tray choose one but its not possible
Would love to be driving that on a summer night .
Car is so big that motor looks like a small block lol. I love and miss land yachts.
Nothing is better than old american muscle and i am only 19
current car i drive to work for the summer is a 1967 ford LTD fastback lol power everything but its the 390
Do you have any Tasca Ford Mustangs with the 427? Tasca, like Yenko and Mr Norm, all stuffed big blocks into small and mid sized cars that they sold. The Don Garlits museum in Ocala (a fantastic place) has a 1967 427 Mustang.
dapinelli, he also has a gasser with one of our shops motors in it.
One wheel burnouts are the best! Said no one ever.
Right? Hard to believe they didn't check that box..
well they have one benefit coming out of a corner under power , maybe one wheel keeps you from spinning out.
Such a beautiful car, love it!
love that car
I owned a 1967 Galaxie 500 that my parents bought brand new in the late Fall of 1966. The car had a 289 V8 and it was white with a blue cloth interior. Boy, did I get the looks in High School in 1974! What a car I loved it!! Thanks for sharing!
Love big powerfull barge...
Beautiful car.
@ 2:50 - Finally, a car you can sit in. lol
Love it
When one four barrel carb bolted to your intake manifold is just not enough...............
1967 was the last year the 427 was available as an option in a car. they could be bought over the counter for racing though. the 427 cost $1000 over the base engine which was a 1/4 of the car price.
"All jazzed up" with somewhere to go....really fast!!!
I love these big sleds. I had a Galaxie 500 with the 390 . Thanks for the video .
The best Ford Galaxies were the 65 XL 500 and the 67 XL 500s .
Leonard Gilbreath interestingly I had the 1966 GALAXIE XL 500; 4 SPD/352, BurgAndy color,:i upgraded it a lot...really wanted at 1963.5 Scat Back 427, etc......but we were college...
Cant believe it dodnt come with a Trac loc rear in this spec but awesome none the less.
Lovely car
Awesome muscle car! Great episode!
Fast and dependable, just gas and go. Better than a Mustang to me because not everyone has one. My Galaxie had 390 and four doors, didn't appreciate it till it was gone.
My babysitter's vampire. Fanged and Furious.
Fab muscle car,Kevin.Ok,so it's no Mustang,but boy,what a looker.
This is just awesome and badass
My dad bought a new '66 7 Litre. It had special Kelsey-Hayes wheels designed to clear the front K-H 4-piston calipers. Standard Ford wheels wouldn't fit the front. 7-Litres also had a 9-3/8" rear-end instead of the 9-inch, and a larger front sway bar. They also had a chambered exhaust with 2 glass packs and 2 resonators. Standard was the 3.25 open rear, but optional was the 3.50 equal-lock. I heard him say this '67 had a 3.50 open rear. I suppose it could have, for it is definitely open.
