Muscle Car Of The Week Video #7: 1966 Galaxie 500 XL R-Code 427
This week on Muscle Car of the Week, we unveil a true automotive unicorn: a 1966 Ford Galaxy 500 XL R-Code in a special-order Coventry Gray paint - the only one ever made!
Combining luxury features with hidden muscle car power, this Galaxy is a unique blend of sophistication and performance.
Here's what makes this R-Code Galaxy XL so special:
One-of-a-kind Coventry Gray paint, originally a Mercury color
Factory-installed R-Code 427 cubic inch V8 engine pumping out 425 horsepower
4-speed manual transmission for an engaging driving experience
Luxury features like an AM/FM radio and under-dash 8-track player
Heavy-duty suspension, brakes, and cooling system for enhanced performance
Don't be fooled by its elegant exterior, this Galaxy packs a serious punch:
Runs mid-14 second quarter miles in original condition
A true sleeper, blending luxury car looks with drag racing capabilities
One of only 49 R-Code Galaxy XLs ever produced, making it highly collectible
This isn't just a car, it's a testament to Ford's ability to create a unique and powerful machine:
Features a "Caution: All windows must be closed for speeds in excess of 120 mph" sticker
Showcases a high-quality restoration that feels "like day one"
The Muscle Car Of The Week is this stunning 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 XL that becomes more interesting the more you look. You will first notice the subdued color called Coventry Gray, and it was never offered on the Ford Galaxie for 1966. It is a specially ordered Mercury color, making this the only one ever built! And while they made many Galaxie 500 XL models, there were less than 50 that came with the R-Code 427 V8 under the hood. Boasting 425 hp, the R-Code 427 breathed through dual four barrel carburetors and churned a four speed manual transmission. This might not look like a race car, but it seemed to be built for the dragstrip. We love the juxtaposition of luxury and power, making this a wolf in banker's clothing!

Gotta love old Ford muscle, especially the Galaxie
Wondenr how it makes cadillac look
Not a ford guy but gotta say these era of galaxies are so nice!
Love the colour!
Just gorgeous. I'm a Mopar guy but I've always really liked those 427 Ford's...with the 63 1/2 R-Code Galaxie, 64 Fairlane Thunderbolt, and 66-67 R-Code Fairlane's being my favorites of the bunch
This is definitely one of the best super stock American cars of all time.
3600 lbs is not heavy for this car. In fact, it doesn't even weigh as much as some new Mustangs.
I had a 79 trans am,,new,weighed 3600 lbs..and a lot less hp!
GOOD POINT BRO!
That was my grandparents car when I was little. Theres was light grey with that same interior and a automatic. It was a 427 dual 4 car as well. They sold it for $700 when I was 15. I was devastated. Dad was right though...I would have died in it. Incredible car, beautiful interior.
This 66 Galaxie 427 XL500 is easy one of the best car I've ever seen , I love the Galaxie , that's real "FULL SIZE" vehicle !
Awesome video , awesome commentary and presentation , is good to see someone who actually researched and know what they are talking about !
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The presenter is excellent 👌 so is the Galaxie
I love this car, and those bucket seats are awesome.
FINALLY ! Something other than a Camaro !
Beautiful !
Just watched all the R-Code 427 videos, all cars are 427% Bad Ass! Gotta love that 7-Litre convertible but this '66 is my favorite. Beautiful color combination.
The 7 Litre 427 Convertible takes the cake.
I had a 66 xl with a 390 4bl. It was a beautiful car.. a definite girl catcher..just loved it and it drove great!! 😊😊😊🇺🇸🇺🇸
A coronet 68 with a 426 and this galaxie R these are the tastiest but the 66 galaxie wins me when I think of the cammer ! These two are my favorite big muscle car of all time !
Thanks for posting ! :)
I'm with you.The two you mentioned are in my top 5
Yes James, big, good looking and fast ! :D
Your description of how this looks and feels like a new car comes through even on video. The side oiler 427 was quite an engine at the time or even now for that matter. It's too bad they were around for just a few years no doubt due to government polution standards. Very nice interior with metal consol and other tasteful metallic touches throughout.
I have always loved the 66 Galaxie roofline.
Wow. That's the SECOND 66 XL that I've seen in that color.:) I painted my formerly Teal Blue//white interior 66 352/Auto XL in Merc. Coventry Grey in 1980. Of course. it wasn't a 427 R-Code or the factory color. I didn't even know That color was available in 1966.. I just liked .it because it looked stealthy. It fit the car..
This R-Code 66 is awesome.
absolute dream car
I have one of you’re interested haha
My high school friend had a '66 7 Litre Galaxie (mid 80s). Fun car with the original 428.
I saw a bunch of R codes the other day, all 4 speeds. Also a 65 M code. Beautiful cars.
Down here in Australia and New Zealand, our Unibody Falcons, Fairmonts, Fairlanes and LTD 351's often got optioned or repainted Stratosphere Grey and everything for the years from 70 to 79 pretty much copied the 66 Galaxie XL 500 style. It was the Redline 7000 car. Love me the R code...its the car we all aspire to!
I love the full sized cars of the 60s and 70s. My first car was the family 1962 Galaxie coup. Even with the 2 speed automatic it was a great car to drive. I would love to have the 66 Ford featured in this video 👏
Kevin, you do a great job, incredibly articulate!
Richard Moody Thanks Richard!
This is what is called one of a kind. Nice, nice car.
we just bought a 66 galaxie 500 with the 289 last night and I have to admit I'm really impressed with it
Have fun driving 🥰
@@jamieseach8911 i’m sad to say since then...my step dad has sold it! it was such a cool car! but it’s ok he still kicks himself for getting rid of it too lol
@@michelangelo5903 my first car was a Galaxie 500 I still remember how fun that car was! I know how he feels!
@@jamieseach8911 I’ve been thinking of getting it for my first car, should I?
Great motor ❗️🇺🇸
This was my dream car as child.
This car sounds absolutely wicked. What a beautiful car. I love Galaxies. Such clean, sharp body lines. Really great design.
Right on!
What a beautiful machine
That's an awesome Galaxie ! Very nice restoration . Love the color too .
She's got to be one of the most beautiful cars ever built 😍
Hay Kevin ~ I love your presentations an have BEEN SHARING THEM ON FACEBOOK. AWESOME FORMULA
I"m a chevy guy, but i love 65 to 69 Fords. Awesome cars
man...lol what a CAR!!! a caution yellow sticker.. BUILT FORD TOUGH SON...427..
Super cool!
so nice! Very Rare car and really something special.
Beautiful machine!
Bad ass car. Love it.
SUPER!
Thanks for posting this car. I own a 1966 Galaxie 500 XL Convertible with a 390 that I intend to restore as a daily driver, but I would love to get my hands on a Seven Litre Fastback to go with it. I love those cars, and they drive beautifully.
I bought a '66 Galaxie 500 convertible (302) as a daily driver in '73 and converted it to a 4 speed when the automatic went South the next year. Added 15 X 7 " wheels and G-60 tires and could hardly believe the difference in handling with no other changes.
I’m 19 and I own one. My dad got it for me as mhm first car when I was 17 haha
Boy in high school had one these,I don't think it ever was drove under 100 mph everywhere he went it would flat out run good, miss them days lol
I love this car, and im thinking about buying a rusted one that someone by me is selling so i can restore it. Even though im 18, im willing to put in the work.!
Did you ever buy it
Back in the day has a 69 Nova with the 396 350 hp, ran into two cars that blew my mind. One was a little blue 66 Nova with a 327 375 hp and a 66 Galaxie 427. Think it was the first time I ever saw 7 Liters on a side badge, wasn't sure what that was but found out fast it means faster than you ! Great times!
You sir are the best at doing this
You're very kind! Thank you!
Adoro carros da Ford
These guys have So Many rare cars! Sheesh!
Always liked all the full size high performance cars of the 60s. The 63 1/2 R-Code 427 Galaxie is probably my favorite from Ford. Liked the full size Chevy's too. The 409 cars and the later 396 and 427 cars
Thanks,me too, the 63 Scat Back 427/// : kind of contribution to my car mania.. Has a school mate bought the Black/ Black 1963.5, 427/4 speed,
New, & ran it hard using many tires up… Blew up early I. 1964?? Sat in his yard for years.
yup very cool
Fun car in it's Time!
I had a 65 Galaxie LTD 4dr and I can tell you that sticker means business. When I went over 100MPH in that car, if the windows were down, the metal ribs for the headliner would invert smacking the headliner down onto your head. Pretty terrifying event at any speed!
Best looking car and color combo FoMoCo Galaxie on here, even though I'm a diehard Mopar man.
i had a 66 ford galaxie 500 xl.did not have the special edition.but what a beautiful car.
Great Galaxie, I didn't know this car existed. I thought that the '66 427 Galaxies all had the "7 Litre" package, with the 427 optioned instead of the 428.
Maindrian Pace h
I don't recall ever seeing that color before on any Lincoln/Merc/Ford vehicles.
Really miss my 66 Galaxie, 2 door, air-conditioned, 390 powered. Still have the title and build sheet and factory manuals for it.
+Louise Sturm i ;had a 65 custom 500 and my father had a 66 mercury. 66 fords were strong enough to be unit bodys yet ford put a flexible frame beneath it to keep it quiet. but these frames would rust out after about ten years and break, at least in northeast ohio they did
Back in the day there were plenty of 63 and 64 R coders. Very few 65,66 and 67's.
BackSeatHump: 425 HP is correct for the dual quad. The single 4 barrel was rated at 410 HP.
Man cool i hope you do the 85 grand marquis ls it has 302 small block i have one as a project
Kevin, my trip home from High School in Calumet City Illinois entailed walking past a little hole in the wall car lot. For some time in either '70 or '71 on the lot was something very similar to this Ford but it was blazing red for starters, a post sedan appearing shorter that this Galaxie (what would have been a lower model?) and curiously had what must have been plexiglass head light covers. It drew me like a moth for weeks till it disappeared. Trans? Bench Seat and it was a 427 4 sure.
66 or 67 Fairlane R-CODE 427
I have seen a ford galaxie displayed outside a shop on route 66
Thanks, great overview of rare 1966 XL… I did buy a 1966 GALAXIE XL500/ 4 speed/352 / Burgandy BLACK INT/no Disc Brakes/ ps/ PBRAKES, in late 1967( had to get special Metallic Brakes / decent tires QUIK, & improve other parts)…. Anyways, would have been great to have this ***427 CUBIC inch er:not sure about affording Gas,etc.
I had a 66 XL 390 with a C6 transmission. The car would do neutral low-drops all day long. By 1976 the Ohio winters with snow and salt had eaten through the frame and it went to the crusher. My uncle had given me the car at 16 years old and I think I had it for 4 months tops before it went to the crusher with 37k miles on the clock.
They were called top oilers due the oil was feed to the crank via the valley where the push rods were. Then the side oiler was made Mar 65 to provide much better oiling.
That door shut so smoothly, I'm sure the passenger side is equally nice.
I was unaware the Galaxie 500 XL was still available in 66', that in itself is rare, considering the 7 Litre Galaxie 500 replaced it. Weird that both were available, I wonder if it was Canadian?
This might be more rare than the 66' 7 Litre 427 convertible you've shown.
Where are the glass headlight covers, you said that was strictly a 427 R code thing?
Also they did not mention, and a lot of people do not realize that this car has the medium riser engine. Not the Low riser from 63-1/2, 64 and early 65. Big difference ! However, he does make a great presentation !
VBTV nice job. Shalom is peace.
Has kind of a '66-'67 GTO vibe about it. More unique though ;)
The 7 Litre is similar, but powered by a 345 HP 428 rather than the 425 HP 427 side-oiler. The 7 Litres are very nice cars, they were quick, quiet, and smooth.
He should add the headlamp covers!
I'm not a Ford guy but I'd take it!
We're featuring lots of different cars on Muscle Car Of The Week!
What cam is in that engine? Sounds amazing!
Thanks for being honest regarding ACTUAL 1/4 mile times, yeah with some better traction might get into the 13's -- You know I wouldn't call a 350 ratio a drag ratio but if you intend to drive the car on the highway that's what you want not 456
+jim dandy
14 seconds at around 100 mph was a normal time for a bone stock big block muscle car in the 1960s. Some ran a little better, some ran a little worse. If you broke into the high 13's, you were doing really well. With tires, you could run high 13's reliably. There's so much hype and nonsense about the muscle car era. They were amazing cars back then, but they weren't particularly fast by todays standards.
+scdevon I am 60 now and back in the day I had a buddy who had a dead stock 70 SS chevelle with 331 gears and a 4 speed, he raced it one evening at the NH drag strip on Wed. 'Grudge night' and all he could get was HIGH 14's at 94, that was the 396 350 hp. I built a Yenko Camaro clone Camaro, 427/425 with 456 gears and a 4 speed, with a friends slicks in ran 12.7 at 110 and I had a junk holley 780, still needed traction 'slicks' to get into the 12's, someone who dragged at lot told me with a updated intake [Tarantula] and a 800/850 I should get low 12's . The old cars need to be remembered for their time in history not compared to newer hi-tech cars, however you didn't need a laptop to tune them
Jim Dandy, you are correct. The run-of-the-mill muscle car from say, '60s into the early 70s (not talking about the exotic, expensive ones), were not as fast as some people think. The technology today is far more advanced. Those cars from back then came from Detroit tuned down some for obvious reasons. If you were good at working on engines, you had to do some tweaking on those cars to get the most out of them. Distributor tuning, carb tuning such as trying different jetting, better exhaust system, etc. If you were really good, some head work on the ports, cam timing or a better cam etc, you could really wake them up. But out of the box off the dealer floor, they were still quick for that time, but they needed some tweaking.
410 hp for single 4 barrel and 425 hp for dual 4 barrel ( factory advertised ratings). Ford was always conservative with thier horsepower ratings compared to GM and Mopar .
Carroll Shelby said that Enzo Ferrari always lied about the hp. of his cars.
Enzo inflated the numbers in order to brag constantly.
Hum...anxious to know which Ford assembly plant built these cars. I know the old Mahwah, NJ assembly plant (closed down during the early 80's) built thousands of these cars back then to include F-series trucks.
Ford use this collor in Brazil for some cars: Ford Galaxie, Ford Del Rey, Ford Corcel II, Ford Belina, Ford Pampa and Ford Escort.
I own a 1984 Ford Del Rey painted from factory with this collor.
Prefer the Fairlane which is basically this car shrunk down However this is an awesome ride I really like the front seats
Mine had the 428 interceptor
Olá amigo. é um prazer assistir seus belos videos. Sou brasileiro, e gostaria de saber se o Ford Galaxie do video esta a venda. Meu nome é Fabricio e sou mais um apaixonado pelo Ford Galaxie. Um grande abraço.
no mention of the cast iron headers.. would love to see this as XL package on a country squire..
There was I think one built. 428 4 speed Country Squire 1967. I believe it is in this collection.
I liked your video, but very surprised not to hear that 427 start, or idling. All there was that 3 or 4 second take off. Whats up with that man?
Absolutely beautiful 😍,nice factory headers.imagie the whip lash people would receive, because no head rests.🤪
Can you address the difference between this car and a 1966 Ford 7Litre? My husband had one when we met. It was a beautiful car like this one.
How we wished we would’ve garaged it!!!
Hi Holly, the 7-Litre was unique in that they were powered by 428s (except for a few 427s like this car) and were advertised as being smooth, quiet, and powerful. Here is one of the 2 7-Litre 427 convertibles produced for some more info on those cars: ruclips.net/video/0uMPl8t31w4/видео.html
My dads 66 390 over 120mph the headliner pulls down that what happened on the way to the hendrix concert in denver.
They drove it to the floor all the way there. Taking turns driving he would wake up when he heard the valvetrain clattering from needed a quart of oil.
390 comet. Summertime yellow keystone classics 4speed. Sold it for a new merc bobcat wagon in 74. Worst mistake of his life he said.
I had a 66 xl 500 thunderbird special 390ci(6.3 litre (im guessing)) but cid was 390 back in 76 my first car that i brought with my own $$ 90.0 had a bad starter
Loved the thunderbird interior and deep dark blue paint what memories😊
But it had the cruise-o-matic not a well designed transmission for the 390 I ended up putting in a c-6 mucho better
Fun fact, all the V8 motors at the time had the bones of a 427, just not as bulked
magnificent car, other than the 62 409 belair i`ve yet to see a car go under 13 seconds right outa the box though
A 426 max wedge Plymouth ran an 11.99 in one test, bone stock. And the 421 super duty Pontiacs were faster than the 409 Chevy's. 62 409/409 Bel Air is an awesome car though. Those big cars could go like hell
Looks like a standard brake master on the fire wall ??
Probably, the Government didn't require dual brake systems until 1967.
You know what would have been nice? Hearing it run...
63 xl fastback 352 4spd at approximately 140 with windows down, headliner started tapping me on the head. Not a nice feeling when you are in your car alone at 140 mph. After that above 70 with windows down popped the headliner bows. Never did learn max top end with 269 ratio diff.
I like to close my eyes and pretend Ron Swanson is talking about a Galaxie.
My friends and I hated the 1965 and 66 Ford Galaxies. However they are cool now.
Leno's mega$$ revamp of this Ford wicket combo is pretty in depth..of what can be done..with lottsof $$$$$
all these twin 4 bbl cars are missing the air cleaner emblem , best part of the dress up
Of course the Brothers own it.
I like the grey, but turquoise is its best color.
I had a 1971 LTD two door 460 Cobra Jet government issued only it was one bad car 160 on the speedometer
I noticed that it had the 45° down angle and 45° to the right angle exhaust tips. Those are not correct. That was something that the factory had a recall on because the original tips were too close to the bumper and they were discoloring the chrome.
AWESOME FORDS. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAR. 💜🇺🇸
Had one with a 390 and would scream
a guy down the road from me has one for sale with the original 427. $3500. Should i get it?
Uncle had a new red Galaxie 500. Really stuck out.
It sure looks like a small radiator for that engine, but maybe the core is a lot thicker than it appears.
not sure but could be why it has the extra tank so you could fill it to the very top
I agree, rad looks to small but the big block Ford FE engines were known for slow warm up and lower operating temperatures.
