  • Birding at Algonquin Park as we continue the 300 Bird Challenge into episode 4. We want to see 300 birds before the end of 2024!
In this video, we spend a couple of days looking for winter finches and any other Algonquin Park bird specialties we can find.
Please note: We may take a break for a week as it has been a pretty hardcore few weeks! We also have a family commitment. If you don't hear from us next week, we'll be back the week after. It's a little hard to update you on the RUclips platform, but I do share a little more on my social media channels (see below).
If you would like to know just a little bit more about Algonquin Park, or the Canada Jays that breed at the park, I talk more about both in my previous video from November 2024. You can watch that, here:

Well that's quite the compliment, Kate. Do you have their number? 😂 Seriously though, that's a very kind remark and one that, amongst several others we've had over the months, feels very touching. Thanks ☺️

Congratulations on the American redpoll. The grouse was wonderful as well.

Fantastic video! Loved seeing that beaver and such a thrill seeing the spruce grouse. I have never seen one, how gorgeous was that male?! And the marten! Such a treat to see it AND capture it for us. Super cute face, I have to admit. And what a finish! I know you didn't get to see the black-backed woodpecker (yet) but the raven interaction was a spectacular capture - I envy you being able to see these intelligent, fun corvids so closely - AND a lifer with the common redpoll. Great visit to Algonquin and thanks for sharing it with us. Lovely seeing the snowy landscape with all its wintry wildlife. You guys are the best!

Wonderful video - well done in the snow! I loved the close view of the ravens - I see them around but not like that. Very enjoyable

Nice footage of pine martin.sue and I saw one up Scotland by loch Lomond few years ago, it stood up on its rear legs looking at us.they are reintroducing them back in to Wales and parts of england and they seem to be doing quite well.

So jealous of your boreal finds. I was able to get Bohemian Waxwings and Pine Siskins. The Redpolls elude me. Love that you get regular sightings of the Evening Grosbeaks and White Winged Crossbills. Was able to get Red Crossbills beginning of the year. There's been a flock sticking around all winter. Trying for 265 with 300 as the top this year. Only Wisconsin birds though. Loved the Spruce Grouse, so pretty. Great video!

Good luck Sarah and thanks for the comment. Excellent with the Bohemians! I've never seen them. A few cropped up an hour or so away from Algonquin while we were there, but we were committed to the park. Lots of them cropping up in The UK this year, I've been hearing. A bumper crop of tree berries drawing them in 😊

Sounds like a good reason to return to a great park. That'll be our excuse for the woodpecker 😊

I keep meaning to get up that way - I have never been there. I love those northern forests, but so far my experience has been in the Adirondacks, Maine, and the northern part of the lower peninsula of Michigan. I have been to the Carden Alvar, and should make a trip to revisit there and Algonquin this summer.

Certainly a great place to visit. Cardan Alvar is also excellent. I imagine we will be there this year, too. Thanks for the comment!

Super video. Getting up to Algonquin in a couple of weeks. Those roads still look awful! Hoping for grouse as I’ve never been lucky enough to find one.

Thanks bud. Hope you have a good time up there. The Grouse I saw was just outside the car park where Opengo and a logging road split. I've also seen them on Spruce Bog a couple of times in the past.

Thanks a lot Keith, really appreciate the comment and support.
This isn't being nit-picky at you in the slightest Keith and isn't meant to publically correct you. I just want to publicly say that I don't own a drone and didn't use one. They're not allowed in Ontario Parks and rightly so. Just incase Ontario Parks Lawyers are watching! Or any other RUclipsrs feel emboldened to use one where they shouldn't!
I used creative filming and editing techniques to create the appearance that I used one. But my camera was quiet, stationary and not flying.

I didn’t realize how you got that effect. Thanks for correcting me, now I know. Keep up the great work.

Another great video! Sara, great job of spotting the Pine Martin, looks like he was licking his chops. We need snow in Alberta, it’s above seasonal and everything is melting.

Hey Tracy, thanks a lot. Weather has been quite mild here, too. 4°C here today, very unusual. Something I was going to mention in a video at some point is how that is affecting our bird challenge. For example, no Snowy Owls turning up in reliable spots around the city this year.
