Birding At Sax-Zim Bog Part Two The Chill of The Chase
We reach Sax-Zim Bog and continue our birding. We traveled from Toronto, ON to Sax-Zim Bog via multiple stops, trying to find birds and now we continue our journey at The Bog.
We're trying to see 300 Birds before the end of the year, and we're hoping to pick up some northern winter species here at Sax-Zim Bog!
CORRECTION(s):
1) The caption on the Great Grey Owl is incorrect. The taxinomical name should be, "Strix nebulosa". The last caption I made was for a sandpiper species and I forgot to change the genus from "Calidris" to "Strix". Thanks to viewer jaurijantzi424 for catching this.

Epic Florida Birding Trip - Honeymoon Island, Tampa, St Petersburg with Owls, Warblers and more Ep1
Hey guys!!! First, thanks for the shout out. It was so great to meet you and share that time in the welcome center. I had to laugh when I heard my voice in the background. LOL, I get so excited. Second, I am so sorry to hear about the car “incident” - and that it cut your day short. Third, I almost cried when I saw your reaction to the great gray - I still get emotional when I see them. They are such stunning owls. And lastly, you guys have done such an amazing job - maybe you don’t have 300 photos of birds, but you obviously accomplished so much and made so many people happy sharing your stories along the way.
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always, Happy new 2025🎊🤗
Thank you, Miguel. Happy New Year my friend 🎉
I don't even have 300 lifers, let alone 300 in one year. Congrats on hitting an awesome number! I'm inspired.
Thank you, appreciate it! 300 is just a number that we thought would work for us based on what we'd done previously, but that would also push us a little harder to learn more and get out and see more. Respect from us for whatever goal works for you or anyone else, enjoying nature is the important thing 😊
Do you recommended car with winter tyres to reach here ?
Sorry man, I'm not the best person to ask. I've never driven on winter tyres. We also ended up in the ditch in this video 😂 We rented an AWD vehicle because my personal vehicle is a FWD hatchback. I would recommend using an AWD. Perhaps with winter tyres as a secondary consideration.
Hey my friends! Two things: Congrats on finding your Great Gray Owl! Just amazing views, and an AMAZING finale for the year. Second, you both should be SO proud of your year. You may fall short of your goal, but in the end you've shown us some amazing birds along the way and I enjoyed every second of it. Thank you both so much.
Thanks so much Jordan
I challenged myself this year also. Took a week off work to see as many birds i can. 90 was my goal and i reached 120 birds in 11 days!! I set the bar higher and higher throughout the year and ended up with a goal of 200. As a beginer birder i had no idea it was even possible but i worked my way up to 203!. Missed alot of small silly birds too like bank swallow which is common near me. A few birds i would have loved to see like cuckuus remained elusive but i will get them next year
Nice work! If you're in our part of the world and can get out birding still, you can still get Pipit. And maybe Horned Lark.
An enchanting video! Beautiful photography. I enjoyed seeing all the different northern species, especially the owl and the surprise grouse! ~Sandy
Thanks so much, Sandy!
Welcome to our beautiful Minnesota and especially Sax Zim Bog. I am so glad you were able to see the Great Grey. Many years ago on a winter birding adventure in northern Minnesota, we too slid into a ditch and also pulled out by one of the locals. Looking forward to more birding adventures with you two. Happy Birding! Cheers from Minnesota.
Thank you. We loved Minnesota and everyone from the state that we spoke to was very friendly towards us. Would love to come back. Thanks for watching 😊
Amazing birding adventure. Thanks for sharing. A big LIKE for the video.
Thank you!
Not quite making a goal that you set isn't a failure as long as you learn from it. A challenge like this requires keeping your eye on the ball. I hope you squeeze out a few more good birds at Sax-Zim Bog. I've never been so this is cool to see how folks bird it. I've always wondered.
As is often the case, the best information we got was from conversing with people who were either regulars, or had already been there for a few days. Some people were a little more guarded, but the majority of people were kind enough to volunteer information on locations where GGO individuals had territory, especially when they learnt that we had never seen one and they were keen for us to experience it. It's been a fun year and we've defintely learnt a lot as I'm sure you will have noticed from watching. We're not seasoned experts, but we've learnt a fair bit about shorebirds and ducks over the last couple of years and we enjoy sharing our journey. I suppose we have to take the dive into gulls soon! 😂 Thanks for your continued support, Cliff. Happy 2025.
No parking in the ditch! Loved the owls and the Pine Marten, how were the batteries holding up in the cold?? I tried to get drone footage for my Christmas video and the cold killed my iPhone battery pretty quickly I went from 100% charge to a black screen in 7 minutes 🙄 So no flight unfortunately
They did okay. My Nikon batteries operate efficiently to -10c. Same with the new GoPro Enduro batteries. It got to -30c, so they probably degraded a little bit. But I have a spare for if one runs out. Didn't have too much trouble with my phone, never got below about 40-50%.
What an adventure you are having. If you hadn’t gone in the ditch, you may have missed the grouse….it was meant to be😂. The owl footage was stunning, I can only imagine how surreal it felt being there. I also live in southern Ontario, but we camp in the north all the time- Timmons, Chapleau and Superior areas but those darn boreal species still elude me😡. I eagerly await your next video guys!😊
That's true enough about the grouse! Both owls were great experiences. The first was more of a kind of shocked gobsmacked moment. The second was more of an exciting sweary moment 🤭 But both times, very enjoyable. We have done some northern birding in Ontario and I find it can be quite feast or famine where it's very quiet... or everything all happens at once!
@ one can forgive the potty mouth in the excitement of the moment🤣
Have fingers crossed to you both that you make the '300' club .... nail biting knowing the year is fast running out :p
Biting my nails is a bad habit I have at the best of times lol We are still fighting to try to make it heading into the last weekend of the year 🤞
@@BritHikesOntario -You can do it !!!!
Oh congrats on the Great Grey and the Ruffed Grouse! SO CLOSE! I hope you can do it, but I understand it will be difficult. Rooting for you!! In the end you'll have to let us know if you had gotten them on camera, how many others would you have been able to count?
Thanks so much. I'm sure we will compile a list of what we've seen and I can include some of the near misses!
Congratulations on the Great Gray! Great Gray Owl was the bird that sparked my interest in birding, and I could tell you were super excited to have seen it! Good luck getting the final birds needed for the challenge
Thank you! Definitely a bucket list moment for us both, especially Sara. One of the birds at the top of her wanted list.
Hi guy's! I felt like I was with you in SZB. We wen't to the same places. I saw 2 GGO's. One on McDavitt rd. The other was on hwy 7 on a wire. It looked old compared to the 1st one. When I looked at the picture's it did look cool. It looked up on one shot so I looked too. There was a crow flying over and took off after it. I wanted to see a pine martin so bad but I could of missed it because I was looking for it to be white. The first walk way you wen't on by the feeder's with all the Chickadees, that's where the Snow Shoe hare was. Since I don't video anything I will show my family where I've been through your video's. I did go to Wolf Hatcheries twice and saw the guy who posted them on E-bird. All that was there was 4 Killdeer. Those pools are normally full but one, that I for mentioned. This was fun for me. Thank's!
Hey Susan, the one we saw was on McDavitt and from what I understand, that one is an immature male (if it's the same one). We narrowly missed the one on Hwy 7 which was seen just onto Stonelake Rd near the start of our video. I think it's the just the weasel that turns white (and is then called an ermine). A couple of people we ran into had seen an ermine. One lady got a photo of it carrying a vole - so it was probably good for a few days after such a good meal! Thanks for your support through the year, Susan. We appreciate it.
Well done on the Great grey! As far as the 300 birds go if you have seen it ,then it counts in my book. Well done to you both and thanks for sharing.
Thank you and thanks for watching. Haha, don't worry, we count them on eBird. For the challenge, it felt like a good way to include viewers if we had to show the bird. I just wasn't planning on missing so many!
@@BritHikesOntario I am in Chatham-Kent I managed to make it to my 250 challenge this year with 10 lifers and 4 late sightings this month. My 250th was a Mountain bluebird and then picked up Snowy owl, Ross's goose, Barred owl and Sabine gull to get me to 254. But this spring I missed as you would say a lot low hanging fruit. Good luck on these last few days.
😊🦉getting close,, your relaxing cannel is turning into a nailbiter👍✌
Haha. I have no nails left 😁
Congrats on Great grey, what an absolute showstopper! What an amazing video, can sense the exasperation that you might not make it but whatever you end up with, it’s gonna be pretty epic. Still hope you make it 🤞 Happy holidays and good luck
Thanks a lot. It's been a Rollercoaster couple of weeks where it slips away... then we get some luck...and it slips away again lol... We are still chasing in the last few days! Thanks for the comment and happy new year.
The Pine Marten shots are incredible!
Thanks, a wonderful view just across from out car.
Congrats on two new birds. We went to an owl hotspot a couple weekends ago and found seven GGO and one Northern Hawk Owl, we were excited! Hoping you can get a couple more for your challenge, cheering you on! 🦉 And congrats on 2,000 subbies! 🙌
Thank you Tracy, we were just at the movies and I came out and saw your comment about 2000 subs and had to check it to make sure! We are very appreciative. I'm only slightly jealous of your Northern Hawk Owl!
Well it was certainly an interesting year for the both of you and also for myself watching all your videos. i have been to many of the popular spots like Peele and Rondeau. its nice to see what you experienced at these spots and what i also experienced. you are both campers and i have had an open fire just like yours. i found that your videos improved throughout the year. Sarah - you are doing a great job. i'm amazed at all the different spots you visited this year. i'm a bit jealous that i wasn't able to visit them. Congratulations on a Great Birding Year. i just dont know how you are able to do it all. The owl was the best. All the very best of everthing to both of you in the New Year. Ron Javorsky
Thank you Ron, it has certainly been a lot of hard work both out in the field and behind the editing computer! But rewarding in a lot of ways that I'm sure we will address on camera soon enough. We only began camping in 2023, and we are enjoying it and learning as we go. Part of the reason we wanted to start camping is to get us closer to birding hotspots, especially at Provincial Parks, early in the morning without having to rely on hotels and racing to get there. Appreciate the comments on the videos improving. I think we've both gotten a bit more comfortable having a lens shoved into our faces! And editing is something there's always more to learn about. Take care, happy new year and thanks for the support.
A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on your ‘LIFER’ for the Great Grey Owl 🦉 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 The Great Grey Owl 🦉 is distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, and it is the only species in the genus Strix found in both Eastern and Western Hemisphere.
Good to know! I'm not very familiar at all with eastern hemisphere birds.

Guys, the emotional high you both so obviously got from the Great Grey far exceeds the low from not quite making your target. That is what birding is all about. Thank you so much much for the 12 month story. I’ve enjoyed every episode.
Thanks so much. We do try to keep things as real as we can while still keeping things reasonably entertaining. We've had a few busts this year and we show most of them, but plenty has gone right for us too. Thanks for watching 👍
I too really enjoyed your videos. Thank you for sharing the ups and downs too. Happy New Year!!
Hey, thanks for the shoutout. I'm the Stephen you ran into. My avatar here is an old photo of me wearing a helmet at Warwick Castle near your old stomping grounds.
Hi Stephen, great running into you and chatting about the places the three of us have all lived in lol. Thanks so much for sharing your tips on your local birding spots. Nice helmet haha. I took Sara to Warwick Castle while she lived in The UK with me for a year or two. Gotta be done!
Sorry that SaxZim wasn't kinder to you, though those shots of the great grey and the pine marten almost outweigh the disappointments. I agree with another commenter -- I'd count the bobwhite. Or maybe you could add a week or two to 2024 ...
I think we should have counted it at the time. But we are reluctant to now go back and add it retrospectively. Let's see how we do. At the time of this comment, this weekend is our last opportunity to go birding due to work commitments after that. Fingers crossed.
@@BritHikesOntario Good luck
O absolutely love following along on your journey to 300! Congratulations on the new birds!
Thank you! And thanks for following along.
So happy for you getting to see the great greys! I was going to comment that first one had quite interesting colouring with dark eye rings and a dark moustache. The 2nd one was much more like the ones I’ve seen here. Such beautiful owls! I would love to see a pine marten that close, so cute! Glad you got helped out of the ditch and weren’t injured- what a pain losing that birding time though. Still keeping my fingers crossed for you to hit 300. Best of luck!
Thank you, we're still working on it! Very happy with some of the Pine Marten footage, don't think I could ask for more with my camera setup. You will know more than I do about Great Grey Owl, but others mentioned that the first owl is an immature male. Perhaps that accounts for the different colouring.
You did get over 300 birds though not on camera and what you did get is still quite an amazing feat.... Congrats and thanks for allowing us to join you on this adventure... Cheers ....
Thanks! Kicking myself on the whole camera rule! But.... the whole reason I wanted that rule is so that we are motivated to bring everyone along with us on the journey 😊
5 days to go! You can do it!!!
We're not beaten yet and we're actively searching Ontario!
@@BritHikesOntario Tommy Thompson is a great place but you have been there. Hve you checked "Ebird" ?
@@anvil49Yep, that's one of our main resources. Both the mobile app and the email alerts. At the time of this comment, we only have 2 more days left that we can go birding. We have some plans already made on where to go based on what birds are being reported. Hopefully it works out.
Congratulations on the GGO what a beautiful bird. Congratulations also on the Grouse. Wishing you both a verry merry Christmas and happy new year.
Thanks Marcus, hope you and yours enjoyed Christmas, too. Happy New Year and thanks for your repeated support through 2024.
Congrats on the Great Grey! Was looking forward to seeing this video. Cheers!

Haha, yeah, a lot of people saying that 😁
Omg! I was so delighted to see the Great Grey! I got teared up as it is #1 on my bucket list. I laughed when Sarah said he was gorgeous, I could hear and see the happiness on her face! It was perfect to see the snow falling and winter silence as he perched in his Regalness lol. That was the best Christmas gift of all! Marvellous!🥰👏🦉
Thanks so much. Yep. It was an absolute delight. My response was maybe a bit more sweary 🤭 the second time, but that was probably even more delightful because it was just me and Sara.
I'm glad you found the great grey owl. The pine grosbeak would have been fun to see.
Sure would Nathan. These birds we have struggled for... The Boreal Chickadee and Pine Grosbeak.... just make me want to see them even more! Thanks for your support through 2024 Nathan, happy new year.
Looking forward to your 2025 challenge! ?
Haha 🙊
Maybe you will not make the 300, that is a pitty, but I liked the total journey so much. And it gave me inspiration to do my own challenge next year. Thanks so much to both of you for these entertaining video's.
