Göcek, Turkey has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the Mediterranean. Tall mountains surround numerous protected bays and dense forests loom over the crystal clear water. Honestly on the surface it seems perfect. But these mountains create extremely deep anchorages so boaters are forced to anchor very close to land and tie lines ashore. This situation can be very dangerous if strong winds come from the wrong direction, which is actually not all that uncommon here since the wind wraps around the mountains in unpredictable ways. So you can never be certain that you are truly protected. And that’s a bit hard to stomach when our home and everything we own and love hang in the balance. Now if you cruise this area in the summer, the weather is for the most part calm and predictable, but you’ll have to share it with about 7 billion other boats. So we’re here in the spring and although the anchorages aren't too crowded, the weather is at times volatile and unpredictable. So we’ve got to learn how to cope with these unique challenges if we’re going to survive one of the most beautiful cruising grounds we’ve ever experienced. But first we’ve got to make the 50 nm sail from our current anchorage at Serce Limani, where we’ve been for the past week enjoying a bit of isolation and off-grid living.

Love your educational cartoons. I really like Jordan's brain, the way you figure things out is cool. Great video. Thank you
Never thought Turkey would be so nice. Consider doing recap sometime of your impressions of the best of the Med (and the not so great)….your favorite areas. From the Azores on forward.
Remember that all places is not safe to travel to in Turkey, especially areas bordering Syria. You should also avoid the areas effected by the earth quake last year if you plan to go there soon-ish.
@@dribrom And you know how? Because it is quite safe. Stop BSing
@@cemdursun That is the recommendations from both from the U.S government and E.U. Just go and read their official websites if you don't believe me.
@@dribrom Germany and France have the same travel advisory as Turkey by the US government. Do you also say the same to people visiting those countries?
@@cemdursun Right now the terror threats is high all over Europe TBH, allot thanks to the escalation of Russian terror threats against NATO countries supplying Ukraine with weapons. However it still safer to travel to France than it is to Turkey. Maybe not so mush to Germany, especially east Germany. But there is almost no tourism in east Germany anyway.
I so love just seeing you cruising, looking out over the water. If you could put more beautiful and breathtaking water that you take for granted, i could put it on repeat and feel the ocean view and remember my days and nights living aboard. Aaaaw to be young and strong again. Maybe even a whole video of just cruising that i could watch over and over. Love you guys.
Honestly, I just fast-forward to see more of the baby.. She looks like her daddy!!!! She's adorable!!
The fluctuations in weather seem similar to that of the northwest U.S. The coastal mountains and inlets lend themselves to interesting challenges. Like SE Alaska, Washington, and BC, anytime you have steep coastal terrain along the coast and amongst the islands, you have deep channels with tidal changes and evolving winds. Turkey looks absolutely beautiful. Sunshine and warm weather would make for wonderful leisure time. Love how you impart the history, culture, and food for each area you visit. Not just enjoyable videos, but educational too. Like you say, “you just don’t know what is going to happen”, life also brings the greatest rewards when least expecting them.
I'm a farmer in Türkiye this years weather predictions are really bad because of the desert dust clouds from Egypt and libia, normally it hapens once in the beginning of april but this year third one on the way and it messed all predictions, all isobars moves rapidly with high winds and rains.
That’s super interesting, thanks for sharing and hope you have a great season
The weather forecast being unreliable in spring is actually something that is true for almost all parts of Turkey. I live in Ankara and the weather can go from hurricane and hailstorm to sunny and burny hot within the same day.
Thanks for showing me how beautiful Turkey is. I would have never known without seeing it in your videos.
Seriously you guys are topping my list of sailing channels lately! Great job and much love from Fl❤
Their production values are impeccable.
Hi Desiree, Jordan, Isabella,
It is good to see my country from another point of view. Although I'm living in Istanbul, visited everywhere you visited and sailed in Göcek and other places that you sailed, I couldn't interpret all of these as you do! Since you visited many other places in the world, your videos are a real treasure for me! Thanks for providing another approach to our coasts and thanks for your comments related with Atatürk. He really is the one, who opened a new era for Turkish and many other nationalities, at least in Anatolia.
Love you and your videos 😍
Hello jordan desiree isa and oso. Thanks for bringing us along. One sure has to be savvy with Sailing and then some. Thank you for all of your informati. I love watching isa grow. Beautiful country. See you next weekend❤❤❤
That´s why we have ancher at stern also, and that is the most used. better to have bow in (feels safer). Thanks for sharing
🥰
Turkey is beatiful!
Having cruised the Turkish coast for five seasons what you're experiencing is common. We found planning ahead with several different anchorages in case of weather change was helpful. Everything you learned in the USA re weather, clouds etc. is completely out the window in the Med. Try to see what the fishermen do, if they stay put so should you. We managed to find stops that just required rode. Try to up your scope to 6+. Hope you go to Fethiye and Keci Buku (fabulous salale (waterfall) restaurant takes you.
So explanatory…..scope, provisioning, babies, comfort, safety, timing, cost, crowds…..I ❤ you folks. Carry on ⚓️
Isa is really walking well! So cute!
Absolutely love 04:00 Saturday mornings!! Stay safe Atticus!! ❤
Another wonderful episode Buds. I love how fate resulted in you getting a free berth at a lovely restaurant with wonderful views and some great food. It's funny how things work out sometimes.
Just love seeing momma and baby together. Isa is growing up so fast. Before you know it, she going to sailing the boat.
These videos in Türkiye are so soul filling for me. Having sailed in these waters a few times, your experiences and scenery are seriously ticking all the boxes. Enjoy your time along the Turquoise Coast guys! Serife! - I'm watching from Victoria, BC
Great video guys. Too bad you couldn't anchor there but fortunately the marina was close by 🤗💞
The bay of Gocek is amazing, we moored at Turgutries as our home mooring, but went to Gocek several times and left the boat there for 2 to 3 months a year there as you can always find a protected area and some of the bays have pontoons you can moor up to when the wind is bad or changes direction, there is a place at the end of the bay called Adaia at the end of the bay and if you can get on the sandy area you will have good holding but there is several places around the area. Happy sailing.
l see you suprise to see snow in turkey,if you sail to antalya ,all year around there is the snow top of the antalya mauntains, and there is ski center on the top, middle of the summer you can swim or ski som day...
Everyone is happy & healthy and thats all that matters. So a litter anchoring problem in Turkey, easy peasy lol...Wish i was there!!!❤
Spring sailing in the Med. Put a weather map on a Dart board, throw arrows on the board blindfolded and you will be as accurate as the weather predictions from various weather maps. Just have to accept it and enjoy the few times the prediction is almost wright. Despite all that we do enjoy sailing to different countries, the beauty and cultures and not least the food. Stay safe and enjoy your time in Europe.
Sounds like another day in paradise to me 😅 can totally relate to how fast situations change once the season shifts from sailing season to monsoon season here in Langkawi. 360 degree wind direction changes in just a few hours and zero to 30 knots of wind of course all while we are anchoring in a bay filled with sailboats and zero wind when trying to sail. 😂 Humbled and confused. ❤ Thank you for the video guys!
Always fun to be there thanks for sharing
Fin-fin skute that is! 🙂
You guys are cool adorable and very pro. I sail in the Med and it is NUTS.Good job there are no big tides to calculate.
Great Episode! It was fun to see how you handled all the challenges you were presented with and and all the explanations for making the decisions you did were excellent!
Watching (as always) from my home in Branford CT, where you guys bought Atticus II during the Pandemic. I actually went down to the Marina slip to visit (yours was the only boat there) but you must've been out and about. (Or hiding haha!). Love your channel and family!
wow very nice video guys as a turk i really enjoyed it. Keep up the content and be safe!
Love the pirate hat! 5:30
I would anchor there just for the breakfast.
Isa is certainly getting her sea legs! (And her dinner outfit was adorable.) Breakfast looked amazing, and your dinner location was gorgeous. Just a perfect video…..but sorry for your anchoring troubles. 🤗🥰❤️😎❤️
Always enjoy watching your videos, you Desiree and Isabella with Oso are such a great family. Very calming and informative. Also enjoy watching your boat improvement projects, if I can ever afford a boat this will be a great resource for getting that boat into shape.
that is so typical Turkey actually, in every area of life. Everything is extremely unpredictable and you can't plan your tomorrow. It's just up and down all the time.
Rice and beans were always the go to for my family, my kids hated asking me what was for supper…Great video and beautiful places, and always a microcenter. Keep up the great work
I love what you sea pros are doing.... And sea baby is a sailor girl as well
Follower since the Key West days.....purchased barbell from your link. Hope to learn new languages and hope they give you credit. Ciao
Babbel..darn spell check!!
Awesome! Thank you! Enjoy learning a new language!
Sailing in the Rockies, incredibly unpredictable winds at times. Boats often get knocked down on the Great Salt Lake. As always, thanks for sharing your adventures.
Hhhhuh?
Very nice video 📹 presentation. The scenery was absolutely beautiful 😍 🤩 👌.
My first and still favorite channel! You guys tell such great stories and bring us into your world so thoughtfully. So jelly!
Just beautiful ❤
Beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing. Turkey looks beautiful.
Love watching you all
I love how you guys ‘provision’ by eating it all before you leave! (But truly love your attitude😊 to life an😮your family.)
I love you guys! What a beautiful place!
Great episode Buds. Keep on traveling. Hello from SRQ.
👋🏼 Hi; “Navarre FL.” I look forward to watching on Sat. mornings. I was really looking forward to seeing what type of food you guys were having. 🥺 Thanks for the last 9 years. 🙏 Be safe, stay blessed.
I’m just down the road from you in Panama City. Good morning.
My near by cruising grounds - the Marlborough Sounds - is very similar- you need to rely on mooring buoys. At Christmas those are all taken, then you can be scratching around for a deep anchorage with katabatic winds having a say. I love the way your day finished - what a result. Great video again guys - loving it 👍🏼
Thanks for sharing!
as a turk, i really enjoyed watching your journey in my county
Isa's doing so good!
Goceck Bay is in summer like a parking place of a supermarket but then with boats. You skipped a lot a very beautiful anchorages in between.
Always wonderful Storytelling. I'm traveling the world with your folks, thanks for taking me along.
Well, ya taught me something. Before touring Turkey, SCOPE it out 1st.
Keep safe and enjoy!
Jordan and Desiree, Babbel did not honor the promotion that was in your video in the past. I wanted to learn French, but I could not get Babbel to agree.
We look forward to seeing your video every Saturday. I travel all over the world, and if you can speak some of the languages, you get a better perspective.
Look forward to your next video next Saturday.
With our best wishes,
Raul and Joan Bryan, Texas
Hey Atticus crew. What a gorgeous cruising area! You handled the challenge well and were rewarded with a nice dinner out. And you scored a bunch of fresh food. What could be better?
RE: your anchor rode. I'm thinking you might want to invest in 200' (or so) of heavy nylon rode to back up the chain. It doesn't weigh all that much. Around here (Pacific Northwest, Inside Passage) we are frequently anchoring our little old trawler in 100' of water (and more) relatively close to a steep shore, on bottoms that vary. Stern ties are common. We only carry 200' of 3/8" chain, but we have an additional 200' of nylon rode, AND our anchor is seriously oversized. It is a Forfjord #6, which is generally used on 50' commercial fishing boats in this region. Those guys don't muck around when it comes to ground tackle.
The nylon rode absorbs shock loads when the boat is on anchor in heavy or erratic winds and bouncing around and all of your chain is out, which is fairly common here. So the chain isn't transmitting the shock load directly to the ground tackle without something to take on the instantaneous strain. We also rig a nylon snubber when we are on chain only, but don't need it once we get 40' or more of the nylon rode over the bow roller. There are times we set anchor with some nylon rode out when we don't really need it for scope, just to quiet the anchoring gear down for the night. The chain transmits noise very well, but the nylon doesn't so much.
Hope you make it to the west coast. The Inside Passage is incredible. Once you have been to Alaska, you never come all the way back.
gorgeous places colors views just so cinematic you make it beautiful also enjoy guys be safe
I just love your channels
Yes, we owe everything to Ataturk and he is maybe the most inspirational character in the whole world! Thank you for taking your time to mention it! I have been living in US, my new home, for years now, but I miss tons the Aegean and Mediterranean cost ❤️🇺🇸🇹🇷 Love your videos!
Excellent video, glad it worked out in the end or you.
Firstly, the handle on Isa's lifejacket is hilarious; world's cutest handbag. Secondly, what's more challenging; big tides which you don't have in the Med or this deep water mountainous shoreline thing you dealt with here ?
Really interesting video. Thanks for another educational experience. 💗
Great vidoe, Turkey looks amazing. Do you use GPS or AIS Proximity Detectors to tell when you are dragging anchors?
I was on a Minesweeper in the Med and always do what your doing, lines on the shore and two anchors, was called Med Mooring.
I used to sail around Florida or the West Coast between LA and SF.
But the one time we were going to take my parents out it was Lake Tahoe.
With mountains all around there is no such thing as a consistent wind direction and instead we were constantly changing the sails or direction.
At one point we were in the middle of the lake heading back to the Marina. Not another boat in range so i decided it was a good time to go below and use the head. I put my dad in charge of the helm.
Within minutes my Aunt was calling for help and truthfully there wasn't a thing they could do that was dangerous so i just let them call while i noticed they must have changed course as the sun was coning in the port at another angle then moving back. At least they're learning something and having a good time i thought as i finished my business then headed back onto deck.
When i arrived everything was EXACTLY as it was when i left. So it surprised me to hear that they did a 360 while i was down below and i never knew it.
It made for even more funny stories when they got home.
I love you guys! A delicious meal and a free, safe overnight stay. What more could you ask for? Safe travels. ❤
Relaxing sailing vacation, NOT.
Been there before. 😕 Thank goodness that's not every day.

I wish me as an American could visit Turkey. The country has such a diverse heritage and history that there are few other places I’d want to go. But both with some physical disabilities and politics now? So sad that politics have separated so many people that would otherwise have met and learned so many cool things.
Isabella is increasingly looking like her old man. 🥰
We are buying our own around-the-world boat right now. (should close this month) You two have definitely put more than a few spots on our "we gotta visit" map.
Over the next couple of years, we'll sell our home and move aboard. We'll cut our teeth around the America's and the Caribbean for a few years until I retire. Then we'll be citizen's of the entire world until we're tired of it.
I have a long racing career with over 500 race starts, two North American championship appearances, two Newport to Bermuda, two Chicago-Macs, and I'll wrap it up with a Pacific Cup race July this year. So, I'm more prepared than most to take up ocean cruising. None the less, it has been watching your channel and a few other others with my wife that convinced her that this is something that she also really would like to pursue. Thanks guys!
It will surely be a few years before our paths might cross, but we'll be watching for you out there.
What boat did you choose. We are looking for our live aboard right now.
@@jesuschrist-alphaomega A Swan 59. It should be an ocean-crossing monster.
@@yzScott that's wonderful 😊 i have a captain friend in the AVIs right now checking out a Jeanneau 54 for us. We plan on 3 years in the Bahamas VIs n down Grenada way before doing an Atlantic crossing. We'll be sailing ⛵️ under the Sicilian flag.
@@jesuschrist-alphaomega We plan to start a channel for our boat. Not remotely to the degree of Sailing Atticus, but it will be easy to keep track of us.
Watch for SV Blue Flame to pop up soon.
We'll probably cross paths.
@yzScott thank you for letting me know. We will definitely follow up. Best of luck safe sailing ⛵️ be awesome to one day sail in your wake.
I live in the Pacific Northwest. One of the local climate/weather scientists (Cliff Mass) decided to alter the computer prediction grid to try to improve its accuracy. I don't remember the specifics, but if the standard grid was 2 km spacing, the adjustment that made a big difference was to change to 500 meter. The new grid spacing corresponded really well with the size of hills and rivers in the area.
Near the end of this video, the spread on your bread looks similar to Greek tzatziki. Is it similar?
Your thumbnails slay me! So dramatic. lol
Thank you for such relaxing content every week! Blessings to the family!!!!
you're lucky my friend to ship the world, we are watching your video from a prison (a house) gr8 vids 🤟
Awesome video guys❤❤
I have a boat in Göcek, Anchoring is different than other place in the world you have to be sure your anchor has catch the ground tight, and then use the robes to keep the stern for both side, similar Mediterranean mooring. You don't need long scope and you can not because of shore steep. Definitely, it is different experience, but very useful for similar situation. You can anchor at boynuzbükü in front of the jety where you take video. other place is Kille iskelesi in front of public beach, 0ne or two spot in martı koy and if there is no boat "tersane adası yaz limanı" Other "koy"s just suitable for medmooring
Very nice ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Jordon in the Bahamas uses two anchors to protect the vessel from the shifting winds.
I hope this option you consider.
Beautiful video!
hoş geldiniz türkiye ye
Wow Sailor great episode ❤
😢You guys are too worried about the anchoring in Göcek bays. As long as you anchor on a slope which is getting less deep towards the shore/boat and you have lines to shore you are mostly very safe.
I spent a lot of time sailing in Gökek bays during covid (2020 - 2022) and usually had no problems in the meltemi and being singlehanded.
In addition to being one of the world-famous marinas, Göcek is also one of the most beautiful and most expensive marina towns on the Turkish coast. In fact, it is also famous for being one of the favorite ports of Bill Gates and Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos. If the two anchor in Göcek at the same time, they will definitely visit each other and this will always be the subject of the news lol
8:22 Dave Ramsey like Rice and Beans and Beans and Rice!!!! Just sayin!
Lol! The weather report in Turkish is very much "hava tahmini" It's either no wind or all of the wind.
true pioneers. Amazing, God Bless
Cool!
What would happen if you just connected the boat end of the chain to 100' or more of stout line?
Would it be possible to have standby chain to add to your anchor for the deep anchorages you will encounter? I mean so you can increase your scope, is that totally impractical?
You guys got it all figured out one way or the other. Amazing sailing grounds. So beautiful… ❤❤❤🙌🏼🙏🏻
We sail to Marmaris in Sommer
You made great 4K footage with that drone cam. You need a proper 4K monitor to realize the difference.
sounds just like normal med anchorage... most of them are deep.... you just have to practice more
Much love buds loving the videos
Great video!
You have to have at least 300 ft of chain, and you better anchor before noon because afternoon wind picks up. After anchoring and tied the lines you have to tune with windlass. .. it's stressing but that's the way
