- Paper Mario has tons of unused content, but only a small fraction of it can be accessed without hacking the game. Thanks to glitches developed by speedrunners, we've come across some hidden messages only found in the Japanese version.
The only requirement is doing Log Skip before completing Chapter 1. On English (and I assume PAL) none of these messages exist. In fact, there's a softlock exclusive to the English version, which appears to be as a direct result of the developers forgetting to replace the unused text after removing it.

I've only just begun to develop Minecraft mods (which is barely game development, but I think it counts) and, combined with my experiences with more general software dev... yeah bugs are painful sometimes. Especially so if you're completely new like I was and don't know, for instance and because I actually didn't know, what a nullpointerexception means.

Maybe it's because of what it implies. It may imply a game crash, which would make everything go black for the people in the game, most likely.
It’s the programmer’s commentary; if testers are able to see the message, then that’s more work for them.
Because everyone hates debugging.

I think it is an relict from game's beta tests. It probably was a message to tell beta testers that something is wrong.

Probably because the english version doesn't have japanese characters in its font, so the text would be really messed up, and possibly run scripts
Imagine if this happened in real life.

And I really appreciate you sharing. Your comment at the start of the video about this game being over 16 years old yet things can still be discovered about it is one of the reasons I love Nintendo games so much. That flair of personality you also mentioned is so persistent from the localization team- I love any extra bits of dialogue that can be uncovered, so for all of you contributors to work so hard at finding these inclusions I respect what you do immensely. Holy shit. There's so much charm in this game that even the bugs and glitches give you some wit.
Mr.Pod it's still a garbage game full of glitches. Not to mention it's one of the easiest games ever created
@@TheLastApostle Most glitches in the game would not normally be found by the player playing normally. And it's hardly the easiest game ever. Slight exaggeration methinks.
Less glitches and a more average difficulty would usually be better, but they don't let games stick to people's minds. That's down to charm or flair or whatever else the game actually presents to you to get your attention.

Theory: It's only available in JP version because it was intended to be used for play testing. When testing a linear game such as this, bug testers are enforced to break the game or attempt to skip chapters or zones. This text was added in for testing purposes only, and left in with the thought that it would never be found. It's cut out of the EN version possibly because that version never had the bug test text boxes in them, only JP. Since it took a decade to find, I'd say Nintendo did a good job at making a stable game ;)

TheDisarminghinkle Lots of Out of Bounds clips that seem really easy to find. I mean LOADS. Some even allow you to skip entire chapters, such as having the full party in a segment where you can only use Luigi.

Well, now I know what "This Message Should Not Appear" looks like in Japanese.
Reminds me Tales of Destiny for PSX... Where if you enter a GameShark code that lets you walk through walls, it lets you get to areas you normally can't in the NTSC America edition. There's like 6 items that you can pick up (that I've found at least) and will appear in the item inventory with Japanese characters descriptions of them... and beside the item it will read, "this item should not be obtainable in the North American version of this game."

Developers should totally do that sort of thing more often - give characters unique and personalised messages in case of sequence breaks!

I personally love it when developers leave their test switches in game. It both lets you know something went wrong and/or leads to fun things like accessing dev tools.
especially in newer games when updates can be made when a player reports something, like the "dirty hacker" ending in undertale that basically says tell him if there's a bug or oversight that got you there but you probably just edited your save file

I've been playing a lot of japanese indie games who received fanmade english patches and it's always hilarious to find out that after doing something really weird you'll get untranslated texts.
The way they all say, "This message should not appear," freaks me out. It sounds like they're in a horror movie or something where a bunch of random people say, "You shouldn't be here."

after the one that said "this message should not appear, or should it?" makes me think glitches are somewhat intentional. I mean the people making these game could easily be leaving these convoluted glitches just to see if they will be found
Years ago the MMORPG Runescape had an extremely complicated glitch/hack/exploit (and I'm talking *extremely* complicated, playing on several accounts at the same time while running a cheat program while executing in-game glitches) that allowed you to enter a cutscene while remaining in control of your character, which allowed you to take items from the cutscene, one of which being an extremely rare and valuable hat. If you took the hat from the cutscene and tried to equip it, it would disappear and a message would show up: "Please contact the support and tell us how you got that hat". Even though nobody should've ever gotten the item they still added a message like that

These messages are directed at the beta testers of the game. Basically it is the developers telling the beta tester to warn them if they got these message since the only way to get them would be through abug allowing to access certain areas of the game too early.
Zac Varg Oh it's simple debugging text meant for the games testers. Essentially saying that if you made it here somehow, there was a bug so tell us so it won't get released in the final game.
