almost no games are! Kosmic has another vid where he talks about the conditions that make it possible for a game's RTA WR to match the TAS and how SMB1 sort just BARELY meets those conditions.
The FTC has a pretty well encompassing article on how Better Help broke their privacy promises and expectations. It also includes a link to the original complaint form (it's a whole bunch of legal jargon so I'd just read the article)

Don't know who here will see this, but want to say I ALLEGIDLY had a conversation with Kosmic and he ALLEGIDLY told me his thoughts on the BetterHelp sponsorship. He took the sponsorship a couple months back and the research he did on the company said they only hire licensed therapists now and paid people millions of dollars in refunds to people who were unsatisfied with their services in the past, so he thought they changed for the better. He also had someone in his personal life say they used BetterHelp and that it helped them a lot. With this information, he felt comfortable accepting the sponsor. He also was happy to not just promote mental health, but to also get paid promoting something he cares a lot about. He also tried his best to promote it in the video as just an option; not a substitute for in-person therapy. After the video's release, he saw the negative attention the sponsor got. He tried to explain where he was coming from in the comments, but admits he didn't do a good job, regrets the way he talked about things in the comments, and those comments have since been deleted. He wishes he could talk openly about all this, but unfortunately he and his family can't afford to lose out on the sponsor money, so he has to stay quiet to avoid any complications. Sometime in the future, you may see a proper response to this situation from him. This debacle very much took a toll on him, because he does truly care about his audience, and is upset that they are hurt by his sponsorship in this video. I can confirm you will never see another BetterHelp sponsor on this channel. If you have any questions, feel free to reply to this comment. Have a good one.
Thank you. I'm hoping this turns out true and we can all move on. Personally, I'm of the mind that forgiveness for a genuine mistake is just one genuine apology away, no matter how long it takes.
Yeah, I personally reached out to him as well on Twitter and got a response like this. He seemed very down to earth and admitted to making a mistake and wishing he could go back.
i did have a friend who used betterhelp. it helped him with a bad breakup. it is quite expensive though, but there's now a similar thing here in czechia called hedepy, which even plans to grow into the rest of europe
Really good video, but like a lot of people, I'm very disappointed in the BetterHelp sponsorship, especially as someone who cares a lot about mental health. However, knowing Kosmic personally, I'd like to believe it wasn't promoted maliciously, and more came from a place of either being misinformed or not knowing their history. The criticism is obviously valid, but the ridicule seems a bit intense. I hope the takeaway from this is to just not promote this company again in the future.
I'm very disappointed in him defending it in the comments. I understand the contract is probably requiring it but I can't watch this content knowing he is (now) knowingly promoting a company that preys on the mentally ill. Almost everything about betterhelp online is extremely negative besides content sponsored by the company, which tells me that he either didn't do his research or did not care. I understand he probably needs the money, but I feel that at least a large chunk of the response is justified. I should be clear that I am normally extremely ok with sponsorship, people need money to make the content and I respect that
@@corgihero259 Unfortunately at this point it's just a lose-lose situation. 15:15 honestly, I think people who explain the glitch levels this way are missing the point. I believe most people think that when a level is stored in a game, there's something like a big picture, like the level maps you see in strategy guides. People think the game takes this map picture and loads it into memory. For these old NES that's simply not the case - there's not enough memory to actually store level data like that! So what did they do? *They made a level generation program* Level data is simply instructions to the level generator to tell it what it needs to create next (ie create a bunch of blocks with goombas when this point is reached by the player.) Glitched levels are simply bad instructions to the level generator program.
@@universalpersonI'm saying you have described things accurately, BUT ALSO, that it's fine to use the inaccurate version for people who really aren't familiar with this at all.
A generator program or a picture is the same thing in the end, just data that is compressed or not compressed (lookup Kolmogorov complexity for instance); it doesn't really matter how exactly it's laid out in memory besides knowing that a random mess is getting interpreted as level data
@@SpeedcoreDancecoreIt's really not the same thing. It limits the set of possible layouts that can be stored. That's why even the fully glitched levels look kind of like levels and not like a completely random assortment of tiles and sprites like level zero in Pac-Man.

was sent this video specifically for the Famicom Disk System explanation and yeah it's a solid simple explanation that it's an add-on for a console and not a console of its own (albeit I'd put an asterisk on the FDS working on NES cause pin adapters and expansion audio) and the tone of your voice explaining the differences is pretty telling just how many times you've had to give this talk in the past
It's becoming very alarming that people are just taking BetterHelp sponsorships out of nowhere like that public spat with Philip DeFranco never happened.
It would be, if that were the 36th character, but it's actually the 37th character, which represents the number 36. Despite saying "Tile 36 being used!" which was indeed incorrect, when he referred to the numbers that the tiles would represent, he was correct.
no, hard mode in normal SMB1 doesn't change terrain at all. It just replaces goombas with buzzy beetles, makes enemies walk faster and shortens the length of moving platforms

I know that betterhelp isn’t a good sponsor and that defending & supporting it is dangerous, which is why i think kosmic should be criticized for promoting it. But a lot of the ppl in this comment section are acting like kosmic is a terrible person in general for this. Yes, he is in the wrong. But you need to understand that content creators cant be perfect role models all the time; they can be wrong, just like everyone else. I’ve watched kosmic for a few years and he just seems like a good person overall, never getting into any controversies or anything. I don’t think he is doing this out of pure malice against his fans, nor is he just blindsided by money. He is simply in the wrong about betterhelp. Again, i think he should be criticized for defending it, but he shouldn’t just be bashed on like this. And, if you don’t wanna support betterhelp, that’s fine, just don’t support this video. But he doesn’t deserve to be completely unsupported overall.
I initially posted a reply but deleted it to write something else. While I don't believe Kosmic is purely malicious for doing this, I think it's justified the reaction it's gotten and that unsubscribing from him is also an understandable reaction. BetterHelp is not a trustworthy company, they have clearly shown they will lie for profit until the law gets involved, and it's entirely possible they are just doing something else malicious or even continuing to harvest user data against their claims but more secretively. Kosmic is willingly advertising a dangerous product and refusing to take action after learning about this. I understand this was not done out of malice, but it's absolutely valid to protest.
Sorry I forgot about content creator's feelings, I was distracted by people getting life threateningly worse help. Also he's genuinely defending them in other comments.
The "you did a thing you weren't aware was bad, so now you're bad" mentality isn't good. That being said, I do hope he heavily reconsiders having them as a sponsor in the future.
5:09 i think the reason the game disables collision at the top of the screen is to stop Mario from banging his head on the ground tiles at the bottom of the screen (as their collision likely wraps around to the top of the screen). Just a theory though.
Since so little of the comments are talking about the video, I will just say that the Minus World is one of the weirdest anomalies in all of Mario, just a collection of near-endless random stages.
@@Yakushii You're spot on. Google "BetterHelp's Response to the Recent FTC Settlement" and read their response where they claim they did nothing wrong and are being singled out.
Even if BetterHelp has supposedly changed, (which I am very skeptical of considering the only thing I can tell that BetterHelp has proven is that they're more than willing to engage in immoral practices and lie if it means they can make an extra profit) i'd still argue against letting them sponsor your video. All that's showing other companies with ill intentions is that you can keep your company afloat and get RUclips sponsors if you apologize and seem sincere enough, which could lead to unfortunate consequences in which companies called out for similar situations get some PR to write an essay about how sorry they are, and then just go back to harvesting data like nothing ever happened, maybe a little more secretive this time.
I can guarantee they have not changed. There are still reports of new users suddenly finding their info being used for marketing towards them... As in users that joined in 2024.
It's interesting to think this category is short enough that a truly perfect run, tying the TAS, doesn't feel out of reach. (By the way, there are even faster game completions possible if you allow the more dubious technique of swapping to another cartridge and then back. Works with Tennis, Legend of Zelda, and a japanese-only Go game that lets you directly choose what world you want to start in by selecting specific game rule options.)
I wonder why it doesn’t give a memory index out of bounds exception and crash the game. Perhaps the developers never implemented code to prevent this. Often times a glitch isn’t anything wrong with the code at all but simply an outcome not desired by the developer, hence it is prevented from happening.
Yes, awesome! I was hoping you'd introduce the Disk Drive version of the Minus World, & was not disappointed. Very nice short explanation of how that works (& good recommendations for more indepth ones). And the run optimization is so crisp now, very awesome. Thanks for this awesome vid. 🙂
Keyboards are legal because the rules dictate that you are only allowed to perform inputs that are possible on an NES controller. With that rule in place, it's essentially just a custom controller with buttons rearranged in different physical locations.
@@GreatFox42 Being able to press both left and right on the D-pad. It has advantages in certain circumstances, but it's not possible on an NES controller (unless it's broken).

in middle school i had to write a fictional story about one of my classmates achieving something impressive. the kid i was partnered with and i both liked games, so i wrote a story about him being the first person to beat the minus world. as a child, i had no concept of what "beating" a glitched world would even entail, but i had a feeling it might be possible. i think i mentioned the wii virtual console version in the story, so i was probably still wrong in the end😭

from what I've learned about any% runs in other games, its actually kind of insane to me that the minus world ending is not the actual any% run. is it because it only works on one specific version of the game?
9:40 That blank square is actually character 37 in that chart, not 36. There's 10 single digit numbers plus 26 letters. The blank is the one after 10+26, so 37 unless I'm missing something and you're starting at 0 when you count.
12:30 so what you're trying to tell me is that the --wii U-- famicom disc system is not a new console, and just an adapter for the --wii-- Famicom, gotcha.
Playing Super Mario Bros. on the NES "back in the day", I noticed the middle pipe in 1-2 with the minus world trick went to world 5, and surmised that the game was using the world 4 warp. Nice to see people looking into the code and showing this is exactly what happens.
Kosmic is too nice. It obviously gives an advantage once you get used to it. Its the same as the advantage between using a fight stick and a controller in SSF games.
@@AaroInTheKnee what is the advantage? Why does everyone insist on this without knowing tangible in game examples? No tricks have been found to be keyboard only, but a couple tricks have only been done on controller
@Kosmicd12 Well, in fighting games the biggest difference between control and fight stick (the big flat joystick decks if you've never seen them) is it gives you more control over the d-pad and more spacing for putting in individual inputs. For example, there is a combo with a character that is close to impossible on controller and can be done with the joystick because of the spacing of the buttons and how quickly you can move the stick around. When watching the WR holder using the keyboard, I can see elements of that. I can see there is way more control on the inputs as opposed to a D-pad because there's zero chance of accidentally rolling your thumb. Given that there are inputs in the WR that take incredibly precise inputs and timing, it makes sense that the keyboard would dramatically reduce errors.
@@AaroInTheKnee So… you have fighting game anecdotes and nothing that is substantial evidence about THIS GAME, yet you showed up to claim that there's an issue despite the fact that the people most familiar with THIS GAME collectively don't have an issue with it, and you thought this was a good idea because…?
@@PierceArner Bit condescending there. There are clearly similarities that you can transfer into this. Incredibly precise inputs over long runs that need to be consistent.

I think because of time your memories have been warped, there is no animation (heck, no SPRITE) of mario waving his hand as he enters a pipe in this game, however, in the all-stars release, mario does a peace sign as he enters a pipe, maybe you might be thinking of that?

edit: the fact that you're going as far as defending them in the replies has led me to unsubscribe. less than a year ago, the ftc took action against betterhelp to make them stop sharing sensitive user data -- for a therapy platform, that's absolutely unacceptable to do, and they should not be trusted because of that. i don't want to doubt you're a good person, and money being a concern is very valid as well, but in the future, looking into your sponsors more may be a good thing. in the end, though, this all has left a bad taste in my mouth, and if you look at the comments, others feel the same way. original message: was excited to see this, but i guess i'm not going to watch it because of the betterhelp sponsor... hopefully you're just locked into a contract or something, but there's a lot of stuff going around about their business practices being shady. But the FTC gave instructions on how to do better, and there's no indication that BetterHelp hasn't followed through. The other issue I've heard of are the bad reviews about BetterHelp therapists, but I heard BetterHelp has improved since to minimize those. In any case, there are also good reviews & stories, too. Kosmic in a comment elsewhere said that he'd heard of good stories. Should we ignore all the people that have been helped because of a few bad therapists? I looked up hopefully more recent reviews and found an article from healthline which found generally positive reviews.

@@MR-zt1hh what makes it a scam?
Yep!
*They made a level generation program*
Level data is simply instructions to the level generator to tell it what it needs to create next (ie create a bunch of blocks with goombas when this point is reached by the player.) Glitched levels are simply bad instructions to the level generator program.
This is completely correct, but it's a good "first approximation" if you're not going into a full explanation like RGME did.
@@MrCheeze completely correct or completely incorrect? How off base am I here?

From what I can find online, though they aren't perfect (no company is!), I'm not finding much evidence that they're evil/dangerous. They services might not always be as good as in-person therapists can offer (not that an in-person therapist is guaranteed to be good either!), but they can also be dramatically cheaper in many cases.
Also, each different port of Super Mario Bros. has a different Minus World:
NES: World -1: Welcome to the minus world!: World 7-2: 01/81
FDS: World -1: Minus World: 09/89: Underwater 5-3, World -2: Deja vu?: World 7-3: 27/A7, World -3: Blooper Castle: 44/C4: Underground 4-4
Genesis: World -1: Pipe Land strikes back: World 6-2: 23/A3, World -2: ???: 34/B4: Coin Heavens B that T's you up the moment you enter the level, you will get T'd up until you game over.
SNES: Minus World varies based on the frame the Super Mario Bros. minigame spawns due to a TAS in the Super Mario World game. The most commonly used SNES port's Minus World is underwater 4-2 or 1A/9A, but your SNES port's Minus World had a -1 world which is world 5-3 or 26/A6, and a -2 world that is similar to the -3 world on the FDS version, with the underground 4-4 and the Bloopers. Also, doing the power cycle on your emulator in the SNES port of Super Mario Bros. will pick random tuning areas for the world (16-bit integers), and assign them to the 8-bit areas that normally crash, such as area 49/C9, 4C/CC, 4E/CE, 51/D1, 52/D2, 56/D6, 57/D7, 5A/DA, 5D/DD, 5E/DE, 7D/FD, and 7F/FF.
C64: World -1: Minus World: 07/87: Underwater 3-1, World -2: Deja vu?: World 1-1: 25/A5, World -3: Underground Coin Room: 42/C2
VRC6: World -1: Minus World: 08/88: Underwater 1-1, World -2: Deja vu?: World 5-3: 26/A6, World -3: Blooper castle: 43/C3: Underground 1-4
Sunsoft: World -1: Minus World: 10/90: Underwater 6-3, World -2: Deja vu?: World 1-1: 25/A5, World -3: ???: 4F/CF
???: World -1: Minus World: 0A/8A: Underwater 7-3, World -2: Deja vu?: World 2-1: 28/A8, World -3: Blooper and firebar castle: 45/C5: Underground 2-4
I don’t count any Mario records played on computer keyboard. Mario is played with a CONTROLLER.
This was one of my favorite videos of yours. Awesome job, man. Niftski is unreal.
The worst part about BH is the explicit targeting of people who need some of the MOST help and usung them to get profit.
Rip your comments section, hopefully the huge amount of them at least helps your video get more views! Ignoring the sponsorship which most of us skip anyways, I loved how informative this video is. I don't even wanna think about how much work it takes to put something like this together. Detailed explanations on all the tricks, directing people to smaller channels, covering niftski record histories, and more.
16:40 I wish they kept that mentality with tears of the kingdom glitches
it is funny how he doesn't go crazy with calling the wall trick in the -3 level is called "Devil's spell" where you jump into a wall, then turn around and jump to make the wall draw you into it. saw another one of these kind of videos that just fell in love with the term, it was good but it is interesting how much the cool names are so hit or miss.
All I’m gonna say about better help is that I feel like as long as you can find a good therapist and get their contacts you kind of set
10:09
so thats why i was unable to get the other minus world
u need cheat
this cheat availiable for mobile??
edit: the fact that you're going as far as defending them in the replies has led me to unsubscribe. less than a year ago, the ftc took action against betterhelp to make them stop sharing sensitive user data -- for a therapy platform, that's absolutely unacceptable to do, and they should not be trusted because of that. i don't want to doubt you're a good person, and money being a concern is very valid as well, but in the future, looking into your sponsors more may be a good thing. in the end, though, this all has left a bad taste in my mouth, and if you look at the comments, others feel the same way.
original message: was excited to see this, but i guess i'm not going to watch it because of the betterhelp sponsor... hopefully you're just locked into a contract or something, but there's a lot of stuff going around about their business practices being shady. (as well as at least one case of a gay man allegedly getting a therapist telling him to be straight)
there's a page by the us federal trade commission about all this if you'd be willing to look.
I would assume BetterHelp would revoke the sponsor if he started going against them in the comments. He probably has to if he wants to keep the sponsor.
@@kyu2kyuhe could have at least kept silent, then, or alluded to his hands being tied by being under contract instead? i don't really understand the benefit of actively defending them in the way he has personally -- there's room for nuanced takes at times but with a company fined for millions i would say he's grasping at straws a little here.
@@kyu2kyu he should have demonstrated basic morals and not taken the sponsor in the first place. I don't think "noooo if I say bad things then I won't get the scam money!!!" is a very good excuse at this point
@luciasarchives
I looked it up - the FTC thing you're talking about was published 2023, but is regarding practices from 2020 and before (about making money off of emails for advertising purposes, if I understand correctly).
Are you going to cry about it?
I like the explanation of the how the minus world works, I kind of figured as much, but it was good to get a confirmation. I really enjoy all the technical stuff, like flag despawns and how small fire Maria is possible because of upgrade and size variables updating at different times.
And the speedrunning tricks are even more insane than usual.
For confused fans wondering why this video is getting hate:
It's the sponsor, BetterHelp. Do not use their service. They have been known to record what you say to therapists and sell it to advertisers, along with a whole lot of shady garbage.
I frankly have no idea why Kosmic would accept a sponsorship from these people, but I hope it gets clarified soon. It may be a lack of due diligence. Don't assume too quickly
