Modify 12V power supply to 24V 36V 48V

  • I am building a bench power supply. So today I bought two 24V / 10A power supplies. A 36V or 48V power supply is twice as expensive as a 24V power supply . So I bought the 24 power supply and modified it to 36V. The modification is very simple, you just need to replace feedback resistor (in my power supply. it is 2K, I replace it to 1K). Next you need to replace the 35V filter capacitors to 50V or 63V. For a 12V power supply, do the same.

      Actually this feedback signal required to maintain o/p voltage same during i/p voltage variation and o/p load variation.

    It should be pointed out that you will be dropping your current capability by at least half doing this. So you will need a power supply that will be at least double what you need in your final application.
    If you bought a 12V 10A supply, it is capable of 120 watts. If you modify it to 24V, it would be 5A max because the power supply is still only capable of 120 watts.

      the components on board are rated by current and voltage, not actual total output power (watts)... The only other thing that might potentially have to be changed or modified is the pulse transformer ( and any component not rated for the volts/current that you are modifying system to)

    • @zaprodk
      @zaprodk 2 года назад +1

      @@seckinseckin3919every transformer core has a va rating . Winding is for 10 amp here. But cores do have a VA rating. They will heat up. And losses shall mount after max VA handling and efficiency will degrade as dissipation of heat. You do not want that. He is right in saying you cannot get more VA then rated safely. Momentarily yes. You can get 10 amps from 2 amp rated transformer but in short terms. I have done it practically.

    Спасибо за очень полезную информацию. Я тоже попробовал переделать такой же блок питания. Я не выпаивал резистор, который вы выпаяли. Я просто параллельно ему припаял резистор 10К и получил 31V на выходе. Также я не трогал заводские конденсаторы, потому что они на 35V.
    Теперь регулировка напряжения потенциометром на выходе от 26V до 31V. Получилось быстро и просто. Спасибо!

    Apart from the fan which was not designed for 36v, you should check the dissipation rating of the two resistors in the potential divider you changed - lowering the resistor value will increase the current flowing and the top resistor will also see the increased output voltage.

    It would be better to use another pulse transformer as well. The change the output voltage by a factor or 1.5 or 2 can drive your controller chip into its pwm limits. So you usually will not get the same output power as for the voltage it is designed for. If you reduce the output voltage you will also not get the same output power, because you need higher switching currents. So the losses of the pulse transformer will increase and you possibly overdrive your rectifier current.

    • @PhdHung
      @PhdHung  2 года назад +2

      When I connect the voltage 170VAC. output voltage is still sufficient. I think when working at 220V. it's still working fine. the maximum PWM limit has not yet been reached.

    Hi i finally came around to upgrade the Volts output of my 12V power supply,opened it went to check if pretty much anything was looking good to the point of switching the resistors near capacitors with the following ohm 600 from my right next 1.2 kohm and the last its 2."something" kohm, based on the video i should change the one in the middle,which in my case is the 1.2 kohm, with 1kohm right?
    or should i change the first which is 600 ohm?or should i change the third which is 2 kohm?
    If the answer is change the one in the middle would it change anything if i put 1-kohm but slighltly bigger size?
    Keep in mind that my ignorance in electronics its very high!!!!,
    One more thing the capacitors 12V i switched were 3300 uF i've put 1000uF 50V,change anything if the Frads are lower?
    Please if you kindly could answer i would really appreciate it.

      I think rewinding the secondary on the pulse transformer will be needed with less turns but with some in parallel. Also higher output capacitors ( more µF , lower max voltage) will be needed to keep the ripple low enough

  • @Zebra_Paw
    @Zebra_Paw 3 года назад +1

    You should also change the output diode as the peak voltage will grow about proportionally to the output voltage! You need 100V diode for 12V, 200V diode for 24V, 300V for 36V, and 400V for 48V, otherwise it will soon fail!
    The fan needs a buck/boost converter to continue getting 24V no matter the voltage! You can also power it from another power supply (a much smaller one that you isolate and fit into the high power one)

    • @PhdHung
      @PhdHung  3 года назад +1

      yes, the diode is 200v. i think, with output voltage of 35v, it still work fine. I used 7824 for the fan.

    • @Zebra_Paw
      @Zebra_Paw 3 года назад

      @@PhdHung 7824 is lossy and the input has to be at least 27V to regulate 24V at the output, so better to use some converter that can regulate 24V from an input voltage between 3 and 42V! I can give you a link if you want!
      200V is not enough for a 36V power supply, need MBR30300 (yes, it exists, a 300V schottky diode)

    How to adjust current? Would you make a video?

      I am thinking if you add a multi turn potentiometer in series with the original 1K resistor, you can limit the amps.

    I would like to thank you for the video , and i want some help if you can lead me to where to dig , if i want the output voltage to raise slowly exemple of a 1 volt step , eg 10/11/12/13//14/15 slowly .Thanks .

    I need 7v power supply. how to modify 12v to 9v? to decrease voltage, don't you need to replace the capacitor? and what resistor should I use?

    Nice idea. But It's imp you tell people to rewire the fan with some voltage regulator to complete the video complete. Without that we can't use that high amperes.

    is ot safe to connect the output to get higher current

    You should replace Shottky Diode too... Because increasing voltage can cause more reverse voltage of Diode.. that can kill the diode...

    if I don't change the feedback resistor, what will happen?
