- Pictured in the video are the towns of Welch and Kimball in McDowell County, West Virginia.
Once heart of the nation's coal bin and home to some 100.000 residents, McDowell is now the third poorest county in the US, with only about 19.000 people living in it.
This video explores part of the area's complex history and the various challenges that McDowell's communities face.
Thank you to all who have made this video possible.

Good job on this video. It got to the heart of McDowell County.
LoL
I was born & raised in the north, but my family is from this area & these videos give me a lot of insight.
Good on you for getting this excellent documentary together, guys.
Glad you enjoyed it.
@@lucasarmbruster03talk to me if you want to know more about McDowell county
My daddy was born in mcdowell raised in welch he fled the mines in th late 50s joined the marine corp Got out after vietnam i grew up in Washington DC The happiest I ever seen him is when he was back home the mountains have a way of giving you a inner peace i can't wait for retirement im needing this peace.
"The Mountains seem to imprint themselves on those who knew them as children"
Grew up in Iaeger, left in 1992. around that time was the fall of the coal and the rise of the drugs. Sad what has became of McDowell county. I went to school with Roger Gibson II.
The mines started to shut down in 81 when reagon got in we left in 89. My wife graduated from Iaeger hi in 77 we came back she is buried at panther now
LoL
Just like our Steel Mills, we will someday soon wish we still had both, Coal and Steel. God Bless the U.S.A. 1776
Reagon caused all this coal steel cars the rust belt he caused it all
Clinton had a part too
Yah but the worst part is what happend in west Virginia in 2016 and it was brodcasted live on national news when trump promised all the coal miners in west Virginia all of their jobs back and promised many many corporations with big paying jobs and do you blame the young kids not wanting to work for minamum wage what the fuck
Really well done. Thank you. Coal may have to make a big comeback, because the current supply of electricity is nowhere near the amount electric vehicles will be guzzling.
It won't unfortunately. There are too many people fooled by the climate cult.
Great work. We need more of this kind of content on RUclips.
Wanted to enjoy a Meat Mountain in Mcdowell County, unfortunately there isn't an Arby branch anywhere, at least the documentary is good, with particularly great shots at 14:01.
What a wonderful video you made!! I loved it!
Interessante Videos. Du wirkst sehr reif für dein augenscheinliches Alter.
merci.
As a Mass Com major/Appalachian Studies Minor and someone who traveled a lot of the backroads of Mercer & McDowell Counties back in my college days, this is a refreshing and truly insightful video. While you were able to talk about the negatives, that was in no way the focus. You focused on people and let them tell their story of why this is home to them and will always be. If you're ever down in the Knoxville, TN area I have some ideas for other videos you might be able to do. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!! Could you send me an email at lucas03vlogs@gmail.com ?
Great documentary, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Ich finde es unglaublich, dass du "nur" 950 Abonnenten hast. Die Qualität der Videos ist einfach überragend. Mach weiter so!
danke dir:)
Well done young man, thank you
Thank you too!
My grandparents lived in Bradshaw WV. My mother grew up there. I have fond memories of visiting as a young child in the early seventies. enjoyed this video.
Been there and it's actually like that 😮💨
Me too !
Nothing there but empty buildings . and the population is dropping yearly .
Country boy will survive though
Love this video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great job! I told a woman from New York that some West Virginians wouldn't work in a pie factory eating pie and she didn't believe me.
Thank you, for showing us as real people instead of a caricature.
Democratic stronghold and the UMWA helped kill that County.

Wrong they built it Reagan caused this in 81
I am from McDowell County. Our Brownie/Girl Scout troop marched in the Welch Veteran's Day parade every year. In 1963, Vice-President Lyndon Johnson was in attendance. Less than two weeks later, JFK was assassinated and Johnson became President.
Did Donald Trump ever save these coal towns like he said he would?
In 2024 he will bring back all lost jobs
The residents said he brought back coal mining and cut regulations, they said trump did good for them in his first term, towns like mullens wv are actually getting better (not because of trump, but because of a new highway)
Trump sure didn't destroy America Energy Independence like Uncle Joe has done. God Bless the U.S.A.
I don't know if he can save them but actively not screwing them like the opposing party does would be a good start.
@@bluerfoot you"re right, trump never did shit for wv. Wv voters got hoodwinked
I wish it could go back in time. I was related to the Sinicrope family in Kimball
My mom was born in McDowell county in 1939.
I really enjoyed seeing you in Welch you should come back down sometime 😊
Haha it was nice meeting you Emily.
