  • Facing a pandemic, an unprecedented economic and social crisis, the United States seems to be on the brink. We followed middle-class Americans who now find themselves on the poverty line.
Marc and Selene, had to close their restaurant and are struggling to pay the rent when their young son breaks his arm. Now they have to find an additional $11,000 in order to have it treated.
A few months ago, Steven was making $ 70,000 a year as a business executive. Today he lives with his wife in their car. But he refuses to give up his belief in capitalism and the American dream and is sure better days are coming. Meanwhile, Kirin faces deportation after losing her job as a cashier.
Directors: Kristell Bernaud and Matthieu Fauroux

As a Pole I'm shocked to see people driving Tesla, Lexus that call themselves poor and ask for help to collect free groceries. I would teach them how to manage their own money first before they reach for any public aid.

I think people should also seriously look into investing of some kind. Something that brings money back to your pocket, real estate, stocks, whatever can bring back value to their bank account rather than draining it. Obviously investing has its risks but so does just having money in depreciating assets or straight up liabilities.

The median rent is 2000. A lot of financial professionals especially the one I work with Samuel Peter Descovich agree that one should not spend more than 30% of their gross income on rent. That means you need to make a minimum of about $80,000. Interesting considering the median income is $54,000.

Farmers are having to sell because of rising prices and falling prices for cattle. I don’t know what consumers will do in the future? People need to find local farmers and buy from them.

With a 10% savings rate, he'd save 120K a year. Automating bank transfers and investing is the key.
The guy went broke very likely because he was paying too much for housing and cars. The recommendation is not to pay more than 28% of gross income for housing and ~10% for cars. However, 28% of 1.2 million is 336K a year. So, at that level of salary buying an expensive house even within the limit can be very costly if you lose your job. So a 6-12 month emergency fund with such big expenses is a must.

There needs to be much better protections for ALL Americans when things like disaster and plandemics happen so that no one loses their homes or their livelihoods because of something totally and completely out of their control. When I had to go to a food bank in California and I qualified in the past, I gave up going, because I would see homeowners lining up at the front of the line daily receiving free hot meals/free groceries, and the lines were extra long, sometimes I’d be told we’re out of food, and just leave empty handed. Some non poor people want free hot meals so they don’t have to cook at home, or to save money, not because they’re struggling financially! The system is messed up, and unfairness is a great shame!

I have a 4 year old Granddaughter and I fear for her future here in the states and it just breaks my heart that I have to feel this way. My husband and I are in our late 40's early 50's and are trying to buy a house. I can remember just a few years ago looking at homes for sale in certain know areas we are looking now and what you could get for your money back then was spectacular! But now for that same amount of money you are lucky if you can find a tiny little house that needs A LOT of work. The interest rates are unbelievable and those same areas while still better then most places as far as property tax I have still seen that a lot of them have literally doubled in price just over the past year. Our property taxes are supposed to help fund our schools and I don't really see what our states are doing for the schools. My Granddaughter just started pre kindergarten and you should have seen the list of things we had to get her for school, paper towels, tissues, wipes, glue, all kinds of things! I remember when my kids went to school you got them the basics and the school supplied the rest. They don't take the kids on field trips anymore and I remember especially when I was in school we went of many field trips in each grade. Extracurricular activities like sports, drams clubs, etc are becoming nonexistent now because the schools don't have the funding for it. Sorry I am rambling on but it just makes me so sad to see the state of my country and the way our Politicians don't do what they are elected to do anymore.Again, thank you for your kind words, from your mouth to God's ears 😉,

It seems strange to see people with cars lining up for a food bank but in reality, in the US if you don't have a car you don't have a job, you don't have anything at all. I don't have a lot of sympathy. Americans live well above their means. As a landlord, we have to evict or lose the house. People think landlords are greedy, but we have mortgage payments just like rent and repairs and HOA fees, etc. Americans need to learn how to manage money and live below their means. They need to spend less than they make and save money for a rainy day. If you cannot afford something, don't buy it on credit. If you are hungry and own a Tesla, sell the Tesla. The salesman who use to make 100k/yr should have saved his money and lived on 60% of his salary.

We had the same disease but everything went on as usual, restaurants were closed but many companies have been helped by the government. If you are ill here in the Netherlands, you pay an excess of 385 euros and after that you are entitled to free treatment for the rest of the year, even if you lie in bed with 10 broken arms and two broken lungs. No one lost his or her job here... unemployment is sadly low and there are too many jobs. Okay, we don't drive such big cars as you do, and we have smaller houses, but happiness is not in things but in a healthy environment. A government that is there for you when you are having a hard time. We pay for that (high taxes) but on the other hand, everyone in the Netherlands is well off. If you are homeless here, then it is your own fault... and even then you will be helped.

I was working in Midland when they shut everything down, but on my days off. I got a call from the guy I worked for and he told me not to bother going back out there because everything was shutting down.
Even drilling rigs that were in the process of moving to drilling locations were turned around and sent back to their storage yards.
Rigs that were drilling, finished their jobs and then were “stacked” (the term for being put in storage), and the workers were laid off.
A lot of jobs are affected by the oilfield, truck drivers, supply companies, rental companies, service companies, etc.
Many people don’t realize how many non oilfield jobs support the oilfield and how the oilfield supports the local businesses like retail sales, grocery stores, restaurants, and many more.
The majority of the people in Midland Odessa are there to work and don’t live there so it’s no wonder that when the oil business goes bad, then the entire city shuts down.

A lot of that wealth is generated by large companies that don't necessarily sell their products or spend their profits in California. Peoples' paychecks are also effected by California's high taxes meaning a lot of the state's wealth is owned by the government. Finally California shares what is left very unequally among a huge population. Unfortunately company headquarters, luxurious government buildings, and private yachts don't help combat poverty.

Why do you think they have amplified the nomadic lifestyle so much, getting us ready to live in our cars. Tiny homes. Smaller apartments. Praise God for those who are willing to compromise and work with people that are falling behind, those who lost everything because of the pandemic. We need to recognize as a country that our constitution was trampled when the pandemic was unleashed on us, people have a right to work and provide for their families, even if there is a pandemic. Even if there is a disaster or war... People have the right to live. That was totally trampled. If we allow these things now, or ever again, we will HAVE NO RIGHTS VERY SOON.

Sadly, I looked up Mark Gomez and it appears he ended up drinking and driving and hit a motorcyclist in September. He left the scene and they tracked him to his house /: Interestingly, the detention center is DIRECTLY across from the shuttered restaurant. So sad, but I also see they do have a catering business I found on FB, so I hope that is working out well for them!
