I have not been watching the live stream for a while. Just to let everyone know that I earned an M.ARCH degree Friday, May 28, 2021. It has been a long road for many years..which I am glad the persistence paid off.

As a chef, born and raised in New Orleans, you hit it spot on Dr. Carr, my grandmother let me taste everything off the back of her hand.

I am sitting up here trying not to cry watching this as it sounds so much of what I experienced that became my foundation, and I try daily to continue living by what they've taught me. One of the things being, "Baby, while there are times when you feel like giving out, as long as you don't give up, you will make it!"
Neither of my grandparents had a formal education. My maternal grandfather quit school in 1st grade, and my grandmother dropped out of school in 6th grade because their people were sharecroppers and in order for all of them to be able to eat. But what they did without any formal training is one of the most solid platforms I have used, use now, and will continue and hope to pass down to my children and nieces and nephews. They keep me going on without giving up. Their accomplishments without formal education helped everyone they could, even if they didn't care for some of the things they did, taking in anyone who needed to be taking in taught us our morals and values because their ways of knowing without formal education were to watch each of us to find out our learning styles. One of the ways my grandmother did this was in the kitchen cooking. She would give us all tasks to see their learning styles, and it means the most to me as I cook with love because I was taught how to love. When they made a grocery list, she made sure to speak to others about how helpful and how much she appreciated us helping and how she never had to wonder if we bought back her correct change. And we all did these things because we wanted her to be proud of us. My maternal grandfather was illiterate. I had no idea, and when I found out, I wanted to help him learn; however, he was shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I couldn't help with that, but I could build on the foundation they set for us. Because if they did all of the things they did, I know I could too.
What my dad did for me took a while for me to understand, but he was the one that taught me to see past colorism. When I said, I wanted good hair. He asked, "what is the job meant for your hair to do?" I said to cover my head. "He then said, is your hair doing that?" I said yes. He followed by saying, "Then you already have good hair." He taught me saying I can't was an excuse not to try. And my Aunt Mary let me cry, advised me, and believed in me until I started believing in me. In a world where labels and status are important, they taught me their importance and my own.

Was live in class yesterday; re-listening while houseworking today. Cooking and ways of knowing: my daughter calls me for recipes re dishes I've prepared over the years. I told her last wk, she has to start writing them down so she can pass them along to my granddaughters. Why is that important to share: before In Class and Knarrative, I had never thought to tell her the importance of archiving our family cultural doings. Thank you both!

1:28:47 - 1:30:00 I had to stop and run that again, all I could say was "damn". Dr. Carr nailed that one. Tulsa's story is an American story and was not a one off, it one that has been repeated time and time again, and the effects are intergenerational.

The cooking and food relation talk takes me deep back into childhood. I can remember preparing holiday meals, and it was the task of my sister and I to prep the ingredients: pick the greens, cut the potatoes, in celery, bell pepper. Lay everything out for my mother who worked night shift, so that would be done when she got home. It was always like magic to me watching her flip cornbread in an iron skillet using a pot lid. The mechanics of that just clarified for me listening to you talk.

I want to pay tribute to our brothers and sisters in Tulsa, Oklahoma who owned their own businesses such as barbers, grocers, banks, clinics etc. The racist maniacs go and ruined what our brothers and sisters built as well as sacrificed as well as most of our people were murdered unjustly.
Tulsa Oklahoma was known as the Black Wall Street.

Dr. Carr, you talked about Hwy I-65. In Birmingham it runs past the Historic 4th Ave Black Business district, near the 16th Street Baptist Church. This Hwy separated the historic district downtown from the black neighborhoods and the 1st black high school in Birmingham (Parker High School). Point is, it split the heart of this once vital, self-sustaining black community.
