"mourning is something you do when it's over, and it's not over [for the Palestinians]" exactly this. A strange new privilege emerged during this live-streamed genocide - the privilege to recover and grieve in safety while denying that collectively to an entire people, only a handful of whom were responsible for the events that led to the privileged needing to grieve, while exponentially and continuously escalating the need for grief and often killing any family remaining who could embody an appropriate level of grief for and intimacy with the human lives lost.

@@srsmopar3808 Prepare for a rude awakening, the world is waking up to the West. Isn't Zionism famous for terrorism, they love bombing just like Hamas? Oh wait last I heard America is also a terrorist state along with its NATO members.
@@srsmopar3808 You fixed NOTHING. Why? Zionism is a form of ideological fundamentalism and Herzl in the 1890s articulated POPULATION TRANSFER in his diary. He sought to replace the population with his colonists and he foresaw like Smotrich of today a land that included parts of Lebanon, parts of Syria, parts of Egypt. Herzl's ideas predated Hamas's forming by about 90 years. Israel also promoted Islamists in the 1980s under Begin because he rejected the idea of two states that Arafat accepted in 1974 based on Israel leaving the 1967 lands for peace. They promoted the Islamists to weaken the PLO. Hamas is a creation of Israel's policies, so nice try by making it seem as it was simply an organic creation of Palestinian culture. Definitely false. It's funny to mention fundamentalism when Israel is FULL of fundamentalism. For decades, it's had people spitting near Orthodox and Catholic Christian nuns and priests without the government doing anything about it. Only when foreign European and American Christians had that on video did the government decide maybe they should do something. Israel also destroyed a Muslim cemetery called Mamila cemetery and some Crusader graves next to it. The Muslims buried included Kurdish fighters of Saladin who helped ironically protected Jews during the Crusades, the irony of it all. Also, a Tunisia born Israeli rabbi blessed an Israeli soldier who sodomized a Palestinian prisoner. Tons of Israeli fundamentalism. Also, Israel kept expanding settlements during Oslo, which helped make Hamas more popular, and on top of that destroyed thousands of homes with excuses that they didn't have permits that the Muslims and Christians of the occupied territories typically wouldn't get. That helped fuel support for Hamas as well as Israel's occupation policies prior to Hamas officially forming in 1987.
Na, you're misunderstanding isreal's position. the leadership are so protected and their victims so weak, they never considered them a threat. And even if their victims managed to break the skin of isreal, it would provide massive economic opportunity and provide an excuse for ungodly violence. Hannibal was ordered only in few places, mainly Kibbutz, and according to Haaretz only 12 Israel hostages died there. Stop spreading misinformation to whitewash hamass.
These "experts" need to address the fact that the IDF had removed their surveillance team from the precise location where the attack took place, and did nothing for 8 hours.
Yes. Something stinks there. And the Hannibal directive being rumored to have been being used. Thus many of the deaths could be the Israeli government's doing as well.
they did not "remove surveillance" they redeployed troops to the northern front to deal with the larger threat of Hezbollah. They relied overly on signal intelligence which was slow. Hamas knew (too much) about the layout of command and control and the communication flow, and was able to neutralize key points early. This is why the IDF was slow to respond. Also, October 7th 2023 was the holiday of Simchat Torah, the rejoicing of the receiving of the five books of Moses. It culminates the high holidays, where even the most secular Jews identify with and participate in the festivities. This is another major reason why the response was delayed.
@@orelibelly there are alternate reports regarding this, such as disregard of military reports that something was up on the Gaza side of the fence, There are also reports of tanks and helicopters being deployed earlier and use of the Hannibal directive. And there were lies about the killing of babies and rapes of women. After all, this was similar to a "smash and grab" from the Hamas side. Not a lot of time for anything besides hitting military sites and grabbing hostages. Then retreating across the border. Not saying that anything the Palestinians did was right, but there are such things as manufactured wars. And why was Netanyahu giving Hamas money anyway?
Naomi Klein is simply brilliant and a logical thinker and eloquent communicator. And Democracy Now! Is such a valuable resource. Thank you for the important work that you do so well.
Israel’s ethnic cleansing policy--Zionism--is no different from Naziism. To postulate, as Israel does, that resistance to ethnic cleansing is naziism is Orwellian.
Chomsky with Edward Herman laid it out perfectly decades ago in their brilliant classic media critique, "Manufacturing Consent", when they identified two categories that are broadly and nearly unanimously adhered to; identifying the cohorts of people that are officially in the sh*t list of the US as "unworthy victims" when people friendly to US aims slaughter them, and the cohort that are victims of our official enemies as "worthy victim", treating them with roughly the same degree of difference as they do in the latest case of the Israeli victims of October 7th who are given extremely sympathetic treatment. The bending over backwards to portray the Israelis in a sympathetic light, and the Palestinians as less than human and deserving of their brutal fate, includes humanizing the IDF soldiers that were the military Target of the attack, while treating the civilian victims of the 100x worse at a minimum, Israeli aggression, as if they were the victims of a natural disaster at best, often blaming them for their own victimization, and even then, not bothering to name them or discuss how insanely terrifying it is to be victimized for a year by a monstrous bigoted regime like Israel. The glaring example that is often given, but there are 10s of thousands of similar treatments, was the example of the poor 6 year old victim of the Israeli terror campaign, Hind Rajab, about which some Western media reported, not that IDF soldiers shot her many times, as she waited in terror for help to arrive; in the form of an ambulance containing courageous heroes that the cowards in the IDF also murdered, but that she was killed by "a bullet that found its way into the car"; apparently the bullet was a rogue bullet that simply acted on its own to make the cowardly IDF soldiers look bad.
Around 1 million people died in 2023 due to vehicle crashes worldwide. 40k died in gaza. Do you give more sympathetic treatment towards 40k deaths or 1 million deaths? Comparing oct 7 deaths and deaths in gaza, as a result of military intervention that followed oct 7, are not the same thing and therefore people sympathize these differently.
@@sipp91 That's a weird ass argument, not even going to bother explaining why global deaths in a random category like car accidents have no bearing on the record setting cowardly genocide by the apartheid state war criminals. The pretence that the Israelis were peacefully observing a ceasefire before October 7th is just a lie; the Palestinians have never been left alone by the invasion and occupation forces, and obviously they were never remotely interested in a peace agreement that precluded them from doing their ultimate goal; stealing the West Bank and Gaza, and booting out or slaughtering all the Palestinians. Not content to just steal Palestine, they're going to keep picking fights and stealing land from their neighbors as long as their sugar daddy; US taxpayers, continue finding the project.

I mean, they need a narrative, don't they? It's just PR. How they're framing it is not as disturbing as WHAT they're doing, WHO they're doing it to, and HOW long they've been doing it for. Clearly, they will not stop until they've cleared all of Gaza and then built their luxury condos there. And we'll be watching it for years to come - all thanks to America, Britain, and other colonialism-coded nations who are blatantly arming them. Personally, I can't believe we'll be stuck with this narrative longer than covid - an actual pandemic - and be upset on a daily basis. Yo, we can avoid using the Holocaust to justify genocide without downplaying the Holocaust. 20 million Russians died at the same time, but those were primarily soldiers. Jews were a tiny portion of the population of Europe and were specifically targeted for elimination.
the brits are TOTALLY FUCKED when it comes to this. They sold out the Jews with partition and we are still paying for it. Just because they hated Jews too....
The word genocide is used a lot in media these days, but what goes on in Gaza is not genocide by definition, which is: "Genocide is the intentional and systematic destruction of a particular group of people based on their ethnicity, race, religion, or nationality". Israel is targetting the terrorist organisation Hamas, but because Hamas hide and operate from among the local population, a well known tactics among terrorist groups, there are sadly a lot of civilian casualities.
The fact, documented even in Israeli newspapers, that Israel killed its own citizens intentionally and brutally with helicopter and tank fire on Oct 7 is almost never part of these discussions. Why does this channel, Naomi Klein and Israeli citizens themselves feel this is unimportant?

She’s brilliant. Period.
Damn what a sick society
