I am Canadian and I did not know about residential schools until the Truth and Reconciliation commission in 2015 or so. We have a long way to go but so much progress has been made since then. I often think that Israel needs a truth and reconciliation process to recognize the horrible thing they did to start this conflict, and the horrible things they continue to do to the Palestinians.
That said we should be careful about some of the claims made about the residential schools. For example the claims of mass graves that made the news a few years ago have been investigated and no evidence found that they ever existed. While that exonerates the people who ran the schools of the worst charges against them we should not forget that it was the residential schools themselves that were the crime: the forced separation of Indian children from their parents and their culture in order to indoctrinate them in a culture they did not wish to be part of. It was in fact a genocide of their culture even if it did not lead to any deliberate killings of individuals.

@@sadib4782 - from what I've been given to understand there were in fact multiple deaths from sickness, but no more than was common among children at that time (for example, my grandfather had two older siblings who died in early childhood, which was nothing unusual back then). However, those were all properly buried and accounted for, and were not buried in mass graves. Of course with cultural and linguistic differences those facts might well not have been effectively communicated to the communities from which the children were taken, and it is very possible that they presumed something more nefarious had happened. Of course we both agree that what actually happened was plenty nefarious enough, but it is still a good thing to seek accuracy in such things, as carelessness tends to generate more distrust and conflict.

Actually I tend to feel that when we look at war and conflict, there are often people behind them who benefit from other people's suffering. i’m glad that gabor mentioned residential schools. so few people even know about their existence, let alone how they still effect people to this day.
I am Canadian and I did not know about residential schools until the Truth and Reconciliation commission in 2015 or so. We have a long way to go but so much progress has been made since then. I often think that Israel needs a truth and reconciliation process to recognize the horrible thing they did to start this conflict, and the horrible things they continue to do to the Palestinians.
That said we should be careful about some of the claims made about the residential schools. For example the claims of mass graves that made the news a few years ago have been investigated and no evidence found that they ever existed. While that exonerates the people who ran the schools of the worst charges against them we should not forget that it was the residential schools themselves that were the crime: the forced separation of Indian children from their parents and their culture in order to indoctrinate them in a culture they did not wish to be part of. It was in fact a genocide of their culture even if it did not lead to any deliberate killings of individuals.

@@sadib4782 - from what I've been given to understand there were in fact multiple deaths from sickness, but no more than was common among children at that time (for example, my grandfather had two older siblings who died in early childhood, which was nothing unusual back then). However, those were all properly buried and accounted for, and were not buried in mass graves. Of course with cultural and linguistic differences those facts might well not have been effectively communicated to the communities from which the children were taken, and it is very possible that they presumed something more nefarious had happened.
Of course we both agree that what actually happened was plenty nefarious enough, but it is still a good thing to seek accuracy in such things, as carelessness tends to generate more distrust and conflict.

I have not been to Palestine, but I try to go to where the difficulty is with love, I especially try to find those who are oppressed, and listen to them and learn from them and love them. I like how your only argument is automatically assuming the UN, which was incredibly small at the time, was justified in, under heavy lobbying by American and later Israeli corporations as well as banks, proposing the plan. The UN can be wrong. What the Palestinians decided to do was attempt to stop the Nakba, which the Arab states later also tried. The Israelis, armed and funded by countless wealthy people, won however. They are refugees because they refused to give up their homeland.

Very well said. As we say "two wrongs don't make a right". We need to find ways to diffuse tensions and reduce conflict. Actually I tend to feel that when we look at war and conflict, there are often people behind them who benefit from other people's suffering. We need to try to have objective dialogue, even with those we disagree with.
