Isaw this pop up on my recommended videos a few days ago, and just now found the time to devote to it. It looked like it was going to be long, but your pacing and wealth of information made it very comfortable to watch. I have been considering a Moonman for some time, and this makes me feel confident in choosing one. Maybe the C2, because at that price point and with my odd writing grip, it may still be a good one for me. Your detailed look at the section and nib, and comparisons with others, was very useful and so if the section bothers me, well I was warned. Your rating system... not bad, really. Thumbs up, thumbs down, and neutral pretty much covers it. When recording them on your writing sample, I might suggest changing the frowny face to an X, or the check mark to a smiley face, just for consistency. The line or N for neutral works okay. Thank you for the review!
Thank you, and check out the moonman C1 if you haven't already. It is one of my favorite fountain pens to use! Where the C2 falls short the C1 more than makes up for it.
I have the violet. My section isn’t loose, and I haven’t had any issues with it drying out over time. Actually, the pen has grown on me, and now I am quite enjoying it.
I don’t have a Pocket 66, but I do have a regular 66. The caps of the C2 and 66 are identical in size and shape. There may be a slight difference in curvature between the two sections, but they appear essentially the same. Both pens have a step up to the barrel. The step up on the 66 is very sharp, while the step up on the C2 is “soft” and rounded. If you adjust for the difference in length of the two pens, the “tails” appear the same in the way they taper. The barrel of the 66 is constantly coming loose from the section, which means it is a good thing it isn’t eyedroppered. The cap also comes loose on the 66, and it always dries out. I don’t have either of these issues with the C2.
My blue C2 section is very solid. Can't see how it could be loose. But nib dried out after sitting for a week. Took lots of effort to get the ink flowing. I may not have tightened cap or the thread design not sealing well.
My pen creaked quite a bit as well. The creaking went away when I greased the threads. It seems to allow you to smoothly and safely tighten down the section. In the beginning, I wasn’t a great fan of the pen either, and had it sitting in my drawer for several months, until recently. I put in a JoWo 1.1 stub and have been enjoying it quite a bit. BTW, I did order the version with the spare nibs but both were Jinhow’s: 1 med and 1 fude...
Interesting that you found the section creaky as well. That certainly struck me when i looked at the pen. In fact, I've recently discovered a significant crack in the barrel threads. No leaks so far, thankfully.
I just got the Moonman C1 but have not inked it up yet, but wow is the C1 a cool looking pen. I got the clear pen. It is also weighted nicely when I hold it. The C1 came with a converter too if you want to use it. I will get the C2 someday!
The wooden Jinhao......How wonderful. Please do a review on this. Perhaps you could include in your rating system a suggestion if a pen is worth upgrading from a previous version or a similar model, for example, if I already have a M2, would the C2 be a must have or a good companion or really not necessary
The wooden pen is a Moonman M6... I have a review video here if you're interested. PS: Aaron... fantastic review vid, just ordered one for myself. ruclips.net/video/IDUohbT58DU/видео.html
Interesting. I have one of these on the way, and even from the photos I could tell there were going to be a few problematic issues with the pen. That section being a big one. Also, the very apparent 'homage' to the FC Pocket 66 is also a worry... I think Moonman's best pens are those that break away from other designs. The M2 and the Wancai are excellent pens. Interested to see how this pen is in person.
The m2 is a great pen! I will say that the C1 and M6 exceeded my expectations. I know the C1 closely resembles a Newton Shinobi, but still a pen I prefer over other pens. Thank you for the comment!
Darnit... this is the third time I've tried to write this comment and my page kept reloading and erasing it. I'll try once more... lol. I thought this was your best review so far, man... great job! I think your candor along with the thoughtful analysis is right on. I followed it perfectly; it was appropriately objective, well laid out and the off-the-cuff subjective parts are great (and sorely missing from a lot of other respectable pen reviewers). I don't mean to come off like I'm grading you... lol... that's not my intent. I just wanted to make sure I told you why I thought this was a great pen review and that the best parts (IMHO) were those you may have been apprehensive about broadcasting. I was really excited about this pen as well. I ordered one as soon as I saw it was released and while anticipating it's arrival from China, I ordered four more because... well, it looked to be right in my wheelhouse, especially with the no.6 nib. When they arrived I inked up the clear one and did my best to use it over the next few weeks, but knew right away something was just off about that section. Too steep a curvature that ended up being too narrow where it mattered, or something very minor but was enough that I never inked the other four and the clear one is still sitting in my pencil cup with it's first ink fill. I still really like the aesthetic, but it just doesn't work for me (probably by a fraction of a millimeter somewhere). Anyway, you did as good a job verbalizing what my own experience was as anyone could have. Sheesh... this is getting long... lol. Finally, the rating system: I love it! It was just the kind of rabbit hole of a rating system I can get behind... I say embrace it and make it your thing! lol... Please don't apologize for a candid subjective assessment... IMHO it's what good reviews should be. It's obvious you spent time using the pen and were familiar with its favorable aspects and also its shortcomings. I followed your thought process just as you laid it out and really enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos, man. Well done!
Aaron You did a great job. Enjoyed your assessment of the pen. Please consider a rating system of let’s say 0 to 5 thumbs up 👍. You could even have partial thumbs. For example, 4 1/2 thumbs, etc. Also, subjective means your own opinion. Objective means using just factual parameters to judge something. Aaron, I am a big fan of yours, and I am enjoying watching you grow. I hope you take my comments as constructive. Looking forward to your next video. 😊
I won't be buying the C2 as it has the Metropolitan's problem of a fairly short (and narrow) section with a large drop off. The C1 has become a favourite of mine, though I was initially disappointed with how light it is: I guess the solid ends made me think of glass. The M6 is great in the hand, but dries out quickly when not in use, and the nib needs some smoothing too. I'm a fan of wood pens, so I'm looking forward to your next review.
@@aaronspenvideos4420 The nib on my C1 feels like a marker (lots of feedback, but pleasant with great control) when I write with it on good paper, but awful on regular paper.
"It's not like a Japanese fine". I am glad someone reviewing Moonman nibs has clarified that important point about the nib. Very enjoyable review.
I really appreciate the honesty that you only write with it because you do the review. I respect that.

Good to hear! For the section, I may just be one of the unlucky ones.

I dont know why mine moves so easily. I have unscrewed the section and played around with it and it still does the same thing.

Wonder if it is a design or manufacturer issue. The pen is just not up to par with what I'm used to from Moonman.

I will probably keep my C1 inked up for the foreseeable future. One of my favorite pens! Hope you enjoy yours🙂

Nice red ink to match your pen!

The C1 is my favorite out of the three as well. Enjoy my M6, but I have cleaned it out and put it away while the C1 is on its second fill of ink.

Any section (or nib) that moves drives me nuts and is a no-go. I'm out.
I had high hopes for this pen, but the ergonomics and the section does bother me.
