Ring Smart Alerts (Rich Notifications) - A Really Useful Feature

  • Ring have recently released a new feature called 'smart alerts' or 'rich notifications', which basically sends an image (snapshot capture) alongside any alerts it sends out.
    So if someone clicks your Ring doorbell, you'll see an image of that person.
    If your Ring camera (and doorbell) detects motion, you'll also see an image of the person/event that triggered that motion.
    This works in both Apple (who supported rich notifications from iOS10, in 2016) and Android too.

    How do I turn it on for all of the other family members who aren't the primary account using the ring app? I'm the ony one that can see it in my ring app as I'm the primary

      Good question - it looks like right now, this isn't possible. Shared accounts don't have access to the feature (which is disappointing as my wife is setup via shared access). Ring are apparently looking at ways of changing this though.
      Until then, though, Ring have said that people can login to the same (primary) account on different phones. Shared accounts were originally more designed for sharing access with friends and neighbors, which is apparently why this feature originally wasn't rolled out to them.

    The ring sensors sends an email immediately to the user but at this time does not send a text message to the user's phone. The problem with this is the user may have his/her phone 24/7 but not read the email alert until hours later. It would be much better if there were text alerts in addition to the conventional Ring email alert.

    The problem with RING's water/freeze sensor is the alert is via email, not a text message to my phone. Frozen pipes are a concern up here in Alaska. So I went with a pp-Code sensor which has 3 distinct advantages: 1) The user can specify the threshold for temperatures, for example, send an alert if the temperature is above 70F or below 50F. 2) Text alerts whenever the threshold is exceeded. 3) The user can remotely look at hourly logs to see the exact temperature and trends for example 65F,62F,59F,55F 50F...etc.

      Your choice (of going with a ppCode sensor) definitely makes sense. It is a flaw with Ring's one, I agree.

    Just wondering if there is a way to get louder or an alarm type motion notification? I'm worried that when I'm sleeping a standard notification won't wake me up

      Some people setup Amazon routines within the Alexa app. They set the trigger as motion or doorbell events, and then their actions increase the volume to 10 (on an Echo device) and also play a song or sound. This can be a good approach, albeit it's a bit of a hack and you will need an Echo for it

      @Smart Home Point thanks for the reply. Yes I was thinking of doing this and probably my best option. I just wish Ring on their app would make a setting you could turn on to get alarm type notifications on your phone.

    I can't follow your tutorial. You're going through it as if everyone understands where everything is in this app. For example, you said, go into your ring dorbell. Then you changed screens several times but didn't tell us what youre doing, then you pointed to a new feature then suddenly your in rich notifications. I couldn't see how you accessed that.

    Do you know if rich notifications use more battery usage?

    • @SmartHomePoint
      @SmartHomePoint  3 года назад

      It uses slightly more yes, and so setting its frequency to 1 or 3 minutes is better than ever 30 seconds. But in reality, video recordings drain the battery a lot more than snapshot captures.

    Hi there I was wondering how we can turn it off rich notifications if we are shared users. I started receiving them this morning.

    • @SmartHomePoint
      @SmartHomePoint  3 года назад

      Hello, you can turn this off for each device under Device Settings -> Notification Settings. However this can't only be disabled for shared users - it's either a case of disabling it for all users, or keeping it enabled for all users (unfortunately).

    What is the snapshot for

    • @SmartHomePoint
      @SmartHomePoint  3 года назад

      It takes a low res picture every 30 seconds or 1 minute, and helps to fill in the timeline. In other words, you can get a quick look at what your camera sees without a full recording being done.

      Ok one more question, which setting do you recommend setting to prevent from having to charge the battery so frequently. I have it on periodically.

    • @SmartHomePoint
      @SmartHomePoint  3 года назад

      @@rachellsmith9517 in this case, less is best. In other words, every 3 minute would probably be better. 1 minute might also be okay, although I would avoid every 30 seconds. As Ring's help pages says: "Note: Increasing the snapshot frequency on a battery-operated device will reduce battery life."
