Skip casually greeting Angel is a great example of what made Buffy/Angel so special, the way it could have fun and turn expectations on its head. The cheerleader kicks the monsters ass and the demon you go down into the pit to fight is a decent guy.

Like I could actually see Skip driving to work like everyone else. Getting flustered by traffic and minor inconveniences on his way to the "office".

I've heard complaints that everybody has adopted the cutesy Whedon dialogue since the end of Buffy and Angel. While that's true, I think this is genuinely good writing, direction and comedic timing. You need it since the budget only allows for one guy in a rubber suit and sfx for one burning man! So sure, people try to do Whedon dialogue a lot now; they just don't do it as well.
Skip seemed like a genuinely decent guy. Despite his fearsome and admittedly awesome demonic appearance, he was keeping an evil bastard burning in eternal torment, and he had a pleasant demeanor about him. The kind of guy you could shoot the shit with and talk about last night's game. And it's funny that I never noticed the sweatpants. Says a lot about his rather laid-back attitude, but it was probably practical for the make-up and costume teams since they likely had to spend so much time on him from the waist up.
I'm glad it played out the way it did, because it seemed really easy for Angel to take skip out to the point it didn't make sense. Like, for being a guard he didn't fight very hard. But later we find out why that is.
ANGEL: "What, uh, keeps him in the fire?" SKIP: "My will." LOVE. That. Line. Also, I guess we should've know that Skip was a bad guy given his Hellraiser aesthetic. I mean, the face shoulder should have been enough of a clue :D
I actually always liked the actor (David Denman) who played Skip. He also played Roy from The Office. I saw him at a mall in LA once and he was just a regular, chill guy.
I watched The Office long before I watched Angel, so when I realized it was "Roy" under all that makeup it blew my mind a bit. Liked him on The Office but he's just great as Skip. He was also one of the leads on a short-lived sitcom called Traffic Light (with Liza Lapira from Dollhouse playing his wife). Watched a few episodes of that mainly because of the two of them but to be honest it wasn't that great.
Loved the humor in Angel. One of my favorite running gag is when the group finally decipher a prophesy of a horrible event that will happen, or a monster will be release to discover it's happening now, or in the next couple of seconds/minutes - leaving no time to stop it.
This is such a feel good hilarious but subtle set up 🤣 it's so perfect lol. 2 beings who have so much experience and understanding of what's gotta happen while having seen most everything that they just.. casual hellos for a casual moment haha.
A lot of demons are chill, Hollywood & religion has convienced us they are all bloodthirsty creatures. Some are just Angels that simply do their own thing away from the creator. I’ve heard of demon that got kicked out of heaven bc he was neutral in a war or some that were lazy to fight.
One of the things I love about that universe is how you can have a simple conversation with gods and demons. It doesn't have to be straight to mindless violence or tons of formality. As a wise man once said, "there's no reason we can't be civil."
If you haven't done so already, I think that sentiment would mean The Dresden Files are right up your alley. There are audiobooks available for at least the first few novels, as well, read by James Marsters himself, in fact. So...double-dose for ya, there.

I absolutely love the actor that plays skip he's played the loanshark demon that hinted after Doyle and he plays the frog demon in the gladiator episode.
It's supposed to be a frozen, empty desolation. The original idea is that it's the only place in the universe that is completely devoid of God's love and attention. It's literally a divine cold shoulder. It was believed that to be denied that love was the worst possible torture, a metaphysical agony beyond any mere emotional or biological pain or suffering. Never mind the fact that God was always a lying, stupid, abusive, narcissistic, rape-happy mass-murderer...but, ya know...God's love, anyway. . Eventually, like many versions of the "bad" afterlife, it got a bunch of "realms" or layers, or whatever...each uniquely tailored in its retribution to a particular subset of asshole behavior. . The whole "eternal burning" thing is a relatively modern construct. Still really old, but pretty recent in comparison to the age of the original stories.

If I'm not mistaken, he was the guy who's mere presence would make other men hate and beat on women; basically his mutant power was elevating the toxic masculinity around him to a lethal degree. His presence, OR if you got his blood on you. He's the reason that Gavin (Daniel Day Kim) beat up on Lyla in one ep, and why Wes & Charles tried to murder Fred in another episode, which led to Wes feeling so bad he stopped interacting with her for a while.

I was REALLY disappointed when it turned out Skip was evil. I don't mean just 'I'm a demon and I'm doing my job' evil, I mean REAL evil.
