Gotta work on your flexibility, Nick, you're just hemorrhaging speed with your chest up in the wind like that. You can make some progress in the coming weeks with some off the bike mobility work.
Agreed! Not seen so many extension stems on an aero bar before. There doesn't seem to be a massive difference between his aero position and his being on the hoods position. High CDA 😔 Also if they are still targeting sub 10 overall, he'll need to push out more than his current 2w/kg to get his speed up around 25-30mph.
@@TheDomLouis yeah, I don't want to be the wet blanket here, but I'm not seeing sub 10 in 5 weeks, I think the cancellation and forced shift to a half was probably the best thing that could have happened to him giving more time toward this goal. Eventually, he probably could, but he's averaging 20 MPH on the bike at his race pace. It's not impossible, he could maybe squeak it out but he would have had to have executed a PERFECT race with an impeccably practiced transition. His swim would likely be average, around 1:15. His bike would need to be at 5:15 (which I'm not sold on) wind on the day will be HUGE with that rough of a position. I'm guessing he's closer to 5:30. I don't see a sub 4 marathon for him. If by some miracle he can manage his energy and fuel perfectly... Maybe... And this is a BIG maybe... 3:45 and I only say that because the run is clearly his best discipline and he has years of endurance built up under his more recent speed development. I'm pegging him around 11 hours with current state fitness. 10:45 would be an impressive achievement. For the half, I think he might pull a 5-5:15 which would be an indication that hes not there yet for the full 35 minute swim (with little chop) 2:45 bike (again wind could be a big factor here) and I think a 2 hour half, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him hit 1:45 given he's been training for the full, his endurance will be more than adequate to be more aggressive with his pace. I want him to do well, I think his influence on his viewers is a net good thing, but he has a tendency to bite off more than he can chew and hope to be able to chew it later. While that's admirable, when it comes to tri, age groupers who have much more endurance experience and training than he does take YEARS to go sub 10. He's not so supremely talented in endurance sport that hes going to nail that time as a walk on. I've said since last year, if he wants to get serious about a solid IM time, he NEEDS to drop mass! He should be racing at 175-180 TOPS. And on his frame, that's not anywhere near an unhealthy BMI. His position would be better, his WKG is almost guaranteed to go up, even if he drops 20 watts off his FTP (which given his novice status is not likely to happen, it will probably go up) and his run and swim times will only benefit. I'm not sure he's willing to take that step. He might after being humbled by not reaching the goal in the short term, but hey, you never know. If I'm wrong, I'm more than willing to eat crow when the time comes.
The guy is a human beast, he does it all. Lift, run, swim, cycle, own a business... And you gonna come here and tell him his flexibility sucks? Haha I know you are coming from a good place but give him a break...
@@EverythingIsPhotogenic Excellent and accurate accessment, based on what we've seen so far. I don't think he wants to lose mass, as that's part of his USP. I don't think he's brave enough to lose mass, as it may affect sales of his products. Lean endurance athlete doesn't sell as well as beef cake 🙂. So are you a triathlon coach or just a fan of the process.
Love your content. A better set up for mock tri is Lake Pflugerville. You can literally go from the water to a mock T1 and off on the bike, then back for T2 and run. Way more realistic that swimming in the sheltered Quarry Lake (I have swum there plenty for practice), Lake P will have wind and waves, unlike Quarry. Lake P is out in the sticks not like the busy 183/Braker where it's not ideal to start a long consistent (too much stop and go ride), you have county roads with no traffic to ride and run.
Nick you should focus more on your position on the bike, will save you a lot of watts if I see your position right now. But again another inspiring video mate

Hey nick ever hear of the shopping bag hack to help you get the wet suit over your feet? Takes all the effort out of getting into your long suit. Any plastic bag over your feet before putting on the suit. Cheers!
Hello Nick, there is a lot of imporvement in the swim, without any orientation on the ground you start overreaching left and right, and therefore you do not swim straight but you have to correct your steering evertime you look up for the boey. The efficiency pull forward ration is not efficient, your legs are to far under the water even with you wetsuit. You needs longer straigher pulls and more power in your legs thus they reamin closer to the surface. But Fortunatly swimming is just the first 40 min. Much better position on the bike, still to low, as you start moving your upper boddy left/right, which consumes oxigen and you are not riding straight (more milage). But overall I conclude that you are well prepared for this race. Stay healthy and continue prepping
Hi Nick - I enjoy your content. I’ve been a triathlete for several years and always appreciate learning new things. I’m sure you are dialed in on bike fitting but just a comment on your fit. It looks like your seat is too low causing your upper body to catch wind and also loss of potential power due to your hip angle.
