I remember when this aired thinking wow. I later learned how much firmer Raina’s voice had became by this point and that this period her voice was in another sort of prime. I love the old lady textual abs vulnerable yet temperamental squillo quality of her voice. Her weird vibrato and way with the lines of music always draw one in. Always a scary quality with a feminine pride I rank her as one of the best interpreters of Puccini. Her characters came alive versus just beautiful plummy boring singing. I mean here she almost sounds like Strauss’s Elektra. Raw abs full of passion and yet security. Pav of course is glorious.
