DURAN DURAN - 1988 BIG THING ALBUM REACTION/BREAKDOWN
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 июл 2024
- Welcome back to my channel guys, it’s so great to be back! We’ve finally reached the end of a decade with Duran Duran’s 1988 album ‘Big Thing’. In this video, we dive into the captivating world of this iconic band as they seamlessly shift between two different sounds.
The album starts with the energetic track 'Big Thing,' setting the tone with its guitar and rock-driven elements. Followed by songs like 'I Don't Want Your Love' and 'All She Wants Is' that infuse a dance-club energy into the album, catering to their intended audience at this stage of their career.
The second half of the album surprises listeners as we hear a transition to a more atmospheric and ballad-like sound with ‘Palomino’ ‘Land’ and 'The Edge of America,’. Duran Duran's ability to blend these contrasting sounds demonstrates their musical versatility, resulting in an album that is both unique and captivating.
I must apologise again for the audio levels still being out of whack. I need a good half a day to fix them up and make some improvements but they should be in check by the next deep dive video. 🤟🏻

I never put this in the video but let me tell you, I went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out what they were using on the studio versions for their electronic drum samples. Steve Ferrone was credited in tracks as the drummer for this album. Whilst I believe he was notably a live drummer, it’s possible that he was using a Simmons electronic kit or Nick had a rhythm unit that accompanied the live drums. Don’t quote me! I’m calling drummers or super fans to answer this one!
Steve is an incredibly precise drummer who used a number of interesting drums in his live kit, including a 3" piccolo snare that sounds like it's straight out of a drum machine. Whilst there are samples sprinkled throughout, a lot of the drumming that sounds like it's electronic is actually Steve utilising tuned drums to achieve a more 'dance' oriented sound. He's pretty amazing. This album also features John Taylor using a Roland G77 Bass Synthesizer which was kind of like a midi bass guitar that allowed you to plug into a bank of samples and play them via the instrument. It allowed for some interesting bass compositions. Warren took up lead guitarist duties from this album until Pop Trash. The summer of 89 at the Glasgow Barrowlands on the 'Electric Theatre Tour' was my first time seeing them in concert and it was an incredible show. Loving your reviews of these albums.
Think the instrument that you were mentioning was an oboe. Could be wrong but sounds familiar.
@Glitterkitty, please see my comments above! 🙂
Steve Ferrone was the primary drummer on the Notorious album. Ferrone also played drums on multiple tracks for the following DD albums as well: Big Thing, Duran Duran (The Wedding Album) & Thank You. Interestingly, Roger Taylor reunited with Duran Duran briefly for two tracks on Thank You to drum on "Perfect Day" & "Watching the Detectives."
Ferrone played live with Duran Duran for the Strange Behavior Tour to support their Notorious album- including their shows in support of David Bowie during Bowie's Glass Spider Tour. He never toured with the band again.
Ferrone played on various tracks on the Big Thing album along with drummer Sterling Campbell. Campbell toured with Duran Duran to promote the Big Thing album, which had three iterations of the tour starting with a surprise & discreet Nine City Caravan Club Tour, Big Live Thing Tour & Big Electric Theater.
Sterling Campbell became a fully-fledged Duran Duran member after this tour. He played drums on the Liberty album (1990) & then quit the band after its release. So here is a bit of trivia that most people will not know that since 1981 there have been 7 members in Duran Duran.
For those who are unaware, Steve Ferrone, born in Brighton, England, is one of the best drummers in the business. He is primarily known for being a member of the Scottish pop-funk group, Average White Band (1974-83). The band is known for their hit songs, "Pick Up The Pieces" & "Cut The Cake." Ferrone does play live for various artists on tours but is also widely-known for working in the studio.
Ferrone has played drums in the studio on over 140 albums for various musicians. He has worked with Mick Jagger, Bryan Ferry, Diana Ross, The Bee Gees, Aretha Franklin, The B-52's, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Stevie Nicks, George Benson, Howard Jones, Christine McVie, Curt Smith (Tears For Fears), Ziggy Marley, Johnny Cash & so on.

BIGTHING is a masterpiece
Such a good album
@@mrfrisky6501 yes it is
The Big Thing was the best underrated album Duran Duran had with great dance tunes and soft warm ballads
I love Palomino and Land. I wish they made videos for them.
Those are my two faves as well! (And I remember how sad I was seeing them a few times on the Big Electric Thing tour where they played every song on the album EXCEPT 'Land' -- they even played 'Lake Shore Driving' and that's an instrumental! I would LOVE to hear that song live)
Me too!
@@NicoleM_radiantbaby Land was the only main song off the album not played like (Inturlude 1 and Flute Interlude weren't played live)
Love these!
@@esecallum Those videos *aren’t* by Duran Duran
I think this is their best album. Every song is fantastic. They promoted the release of the album with a free performance in the Capitol Records parking lot in Hollywood. My friends and I ditched school to see it. It was incredible.
Oh wow! That would have been amazing - best excuse to skip class haha.
It is definitely in my top 3 Duran albums!
I hadn't ever thought about which is my favourite of theirs - I think you could be right. Everything about this one hits the mark, the perfect combination of .... everything.
Love this album. It’s in my top five for DD.
There are so many 'beautiful heartbreak' moments on this album. 'When I run out of blue' GENIUS! The second half of this album is so emotional.
Too Late Marlene is my favorite track on Big Thing. It’s beautifully melodic, Simon’s vocals are romantic and the saxophone makes it sexy.
This was my favorite album that year. I listened to it all the time the year it came out.
The Edge of America is probably my fav here. So soothing and yet so much of a riddle. Amazing stuff from the guys here.
I agree with you the 2nd part of the album for me is masterpiece
Thank you again for allowing us to "re-listen" these albums! I think that "Big Thing" is a sort of hidden gem of DD's discography! 🤩
Stunning album very underrated. Do you believe in shame is written about the same person Simon sings about in ordinary world. And palomino is simply beautiful 👌
Yes! His name was Miles.
The 2 songs are part of the known trilogy with Michael, you've got...for their meaning
@@lebby4ever , you're wrong! The trilogy is Do you believe in shame, Ordinary World and Out of my mind. Michael you've...is dedicated to Michael Hutchence
@@antarcticaalc1350 Thank you
@@lebby4ever 🙂
Palomino is beautiful. Still gives me chills even after all these years
I could listen to that song over and over!
Do You Believe in Shame? is dedicated to Simon's childhood friend who died as well as Ordinary World.
Ripped off susie q .
It is part of the trilogy dedicated to Simon's friend; Do You Believe In Shame, Ordinary World and Out of my Mind.
@@paulbradley705 It's a blues progression so it's going to sound similar. And every musician takes ideas from other artists, even CCR. Here are notable Beatles songs that are, as you say that, "ripped off" others: “Revolution”: Pee Wee Crayton, “Do Unto Others” / “Come Together”: Chuck Berry, “You Can’t Catch Me” / “I Feel Fine”: Bobby Parker, “Watch Your Step” / “I Saw Her Standing There”: Chuck Berry, “I’m Talking About You” / “Lady Madonna”: Humphrey Lyttelton, “Bad Penny Blues."
Elvis Presley stole one of his biggest hits, “Hound Dog” from Big Mama Thornton.
The Beach Boys' Surfin" USA is a ripped re-work of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen/"
Led Zeppelin can release a double album of "ripped off" songs.
Radiohead's "Creep" is a rip off of Albert Hammond's "Air That I Breathe."
Rod Stewart's "Da' Ya' Think I'm Sexy?" ripped Jorge Ben's "Taj Mahal."
George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" is ripped from The Chiffon's "He's So Fine."
Harrison said: “I wasn’t consciously aware of the similarity when I wrote the song, but once it started to get a lot of airplay, people started talking about it, and it was then I thought, ‘Why didn’t I realize?’ It would have been very easy to change a note here or there and not affect the feeling of the record.”
Nirvana's "Come as You Are ripped off" Killing Joke's "Eighties."
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Dani California" the chord progression is taken note for note from Tom Petty’s ‘Mary Jane’s Last Dance’, only changing around a couple of notes.
Pearl Jam's "Given To Fly" is a rip off of Led Zeppelin's "Going To California"
Michael Jackson, per Quincy Jones. "'He stole a lot of songs... Michael Jackson plagiarized other artists and his 1982 hit Billie Jean was a ripoff of a Donna Summer's song "State of Independence." 'I hate to get into this publicly, but Michael stole a lot of stuff. He stole a lot of songs,' Quincy sensationally told Vulture, the culture site of New York magazine. 'The notes don't lie, man. He was as Machiavellian as they come." He specifically cited Billie Jean - a signature song off the Quincy-produced Thriller, the bestselling album of all time. Quincy suggested a parallel between that song and late disco queen Donna Summer's State of Independence, which was also produced by Quincy and released several months earlier in 1982. Few listeners would immediately associate the two songs, although both open and are built on unusually lengthy synthesized bass lines.

Love this album, side 1 ok, side 2 a masterpiece. Great review as always Kitty :)
My Favorite Duran Duran album. It's full of beautiful deep songs. I still listen to it pretty regularly.
Love BigThing🔥Palomino is my fav!
DURAN DURAN IS FANTASTIC. GREAT ALBUM!
In 1988 I was 15 years old
I bought Big thing the day after Christmas I listened to big thing playing the new game super mario bros 2
I got for xmas and it's a great memory big thing is my favorite duran duran album.
I always thought that Simon’s solo effort Grey Lady of the Sea would fit well into this album. I see it and Land being two parts of a story about Simon’s yachting exploits on the yacht Drum.
Just gorgeous…
My absolute FAVE Duran album! ❤
This is an incredible album and has my most favourite track of all time Palomino. It’s just the most beautiful track that paints such vivid imagery and a sultry atmosphere. Simons vocals are stunning, the guitar and subtle bass are perfect and then the synth section with whale sounds is amazing ❤️ I also just realised that flute interlude sounds like the forest temple from Zelda ocarina of time!
When they made this - 1988 , they were already "pop stars", MTV playing their videos in repeat . I remember Simon had one of his best hair styles this period 😂
They were the biggest band in the world in 1985!
Yeah, he grew his hair out didn't he?
Land and Palomino are gorgeous songs. Like you, I love the synth. Nick is a genius. Glad you got to see them live. I’ll be seeing them at Red Rocks in August.
Hope you have an amazing time Marcus!
Apologies guys for not including God (London) and This is How a Road Gets Made. I’ll be including these in a video with other missing/skipped B-Sides.
Please do
I now will go listen loudly to big thing
Palomino is the afterglow of Round 2. Snuggling and Relaxation.
John Taylor once said he was influenced by Prince and sign o’ the times in particular regarding the drums and drum programming. 🙂
Another great album!
Palomino is in my top 3 favorite Duran songs. It was AMAZING live! Even better than the studio version. I wish it had stayed on their permanent set-list.
Absolutely - the live version is amazing ❤
On youtube you can find concerts from the era of Big Thing. One in Italy and one in Japan! You'll love it!
Loving your reviews great album with palomino breaking my heart every time I hear it the most beautiful duran song
I Believe is one of my Favourite Duran songs. This song had a lot of resonance in my life at the time. The lyrics are amazing. But then again, the lyrics on all Duran songs are so well thought out.
I actually saw this tour back in 1989 in London. Hard to believe its that long ago! Seems like yesterday!!! ;)
They were stunning in concert by the way
Was that at the London Arena? I was at that show! I live in the U.S. but I was going to college in England at the time. I also saw them for at a "pre tour" show in SanFrancisco. Very small venue, famous venue (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin) that was destroyed a couple years later in the earthquake (1989). I got right up to the stage. So cool!
@@JonesLeFae stunning!
I love your channel. Duran duran are my favorite band.
Roger was probably down low because he feels more comfortable there. He is very introverted and he likes to stick to his music and not be distracted. After all they are touring all over the world and playing their hearts out. You can imagine how tired they are and they do this for us who love them! Love you Duran Duran! Duran Duran forever!❤️🫶❤️🫶❤️🫶❤️🫶❤️🫶❤️🫶❤️🫶❤️
I discovered "Do You Believe in Shame" earlier this year after someone mentioned it and what inspired the lyrics. Intrigued, I found a live version on RUclips & fell totally in love with the song! Being only casually aware of their singles in the early 80's, & Ordinary World, DYBIS was a revelation! Simon's lyrics & voice gave me chills.
Since then I've become a newly converted Duranie, exploring their back catalog , videos, concerts and interviews online. I just stumbled upon your channel tonight & look forward to exploring their catalog with your take on each album.
I have to say I especially like the more moody songs, so I really like the 2nd half of the Big Thing.
And " I Believe/All I Need to Know" should have been released as an A side single!
All I Need To Know is a FAVE.
Absolutely correct the second half is pure beauty sounds echoes instruments
Constantly on my playlist and seriously underrated album thank you for your constant great interpretation you are always on the money
Colin
I agree with you 100%. I had the opportunity to see DD in Ft. Worth Texas last summer and while it was not my first DD concert by any means, it was an amazing experience. We actually had 3 generations at the concert singing our hearts out!
Duran Duran was always quoted as saying "We want to be the band that is dancing when the bomb drops!"
Fun Fact: The song “Do You Believe In Shame?” was on the soundtrack for the film “Tequila Sunrise”. Also on the soundtrack, “Dead On The Money” - a song by Andy Taylor!
ruclips.net/video/O4Ga9voYTJ8/видео.html
Also this song is about Simon Lebon best friend that died of drug overdose
I loved this album but I remember when it came out I felt cheated by the 2 interludes lol. Their instrumental game has picked up for sure since that album. Thanks for doing these as a 54 year old lifetimer I am enjoying your videos
It’s so awesome to discover someone else who loves this album as much as I do! It’s in my top 5 of all Duran Duran albums ❤
Palomino is a very good song indeed. The chorus of the song is just wonderful. Been loving your reactions to the Duran Duran albums!
Thanks Oliver 😊
“I Believe (All I Need To Know)” was an answer to “Is There Something I Should Know?”
It was not. The song is a combination of two songs put together & it is called, I Believe/All I Need To Know (Medley).
Junior and senior years of high school, this was one of my listens on repeat. Listening to this through headphones drowned out all the other bs.
The was never an acoustic guitar solo in 'Land' too!! Love that!
This is my favorite Duran album and Land is my favorite song of all time by them. So happy to hear you enjoy it!
Seemingly every album they've recorded is brilliant, even if I didn't quite realise it at the time of release. Warren seemed to elevate them when Andy left to persue a solo career in the mid eighties.
I became a duranie after listening to this record , even though i was aware of the band.
I literally pre-ordered the CD Big Thing from my local Hi-Fi shop, in the UK…Not caring DD were also horribly out of fashion…I still have said CD BTW!……So happy that young people, such as yourself GK, are still considering (let alone appreciating) such music…By that standard, we SHOULDN'T even consider Beethoven BTW! ☺
I was at the 02 May 2nd 6rows back from the front on Nick/Dom and Anna Ross so had a brilliant view...I danced screamed and sang .....What a night.
Glad you had a great time!
I believe all i need to know one of my favourite duran duran song ❤
A really masterpiece in my opinion, i just love this album 👉Amazing👈 !!! The three singles are so ahead of that time from the 80ies : "I don`t want your love", "Do you believe in shame ?" and "All she wants is". Perfect.
É um baita álbum a guitarra de Warren Cuccurullo é genial! Ele ainda era só guitarrista de apoio nesta época.
The thrilling song "Big Thing" is super-suggestive.
I'm going to see Duran Duran in San Diego, CA next week. I went last year in L.A. at Hollywood Bowl. Now I'm going again.
Enjoy!
Thanks for reviewing this! One of my favs. I was lucky to work with them for four shows in 2019. Got to see the show from back stage to the side of Roger drums. it was so cool and they are great to work with! I've been a fan my whole life. Amazing!
Never really understood how "I Don't Want Your Love" and "All She Wants" were not bigger songs in the UK. Yes, by today's standards they charted high but they were not in long and are not often remembered in the same way as Notorious and any other single before it are.
To me, this is Duran Duran being influenced by the house and madchestee music scene of the time. They sit nicely along side singles by the Pet Shop Boys (ie Dominoe Dancing) and New Order from the same era where they transitioned from their earlier synth and new wave sound into being influenced by acid house and madchester. Yet those bands singles from this era are still remembered today here but not so much Duran Duran's. They are two of their best singles imo. Really catchy and great fun songs.
Hi kitty I was there not as far to travel as you simons vocals were amazing the opening number was brilliant Its so nice to see someone as in love with the band as i am I think the big thing album is underated proberbly due to Duran having a lean time in this period I love watching your show
I bought the cassette in 1989, still listen to it
Bold and beautiful. One of their best albums. Being a fan since 1981, “Big Thing” is one of my top 5 DD albums. Thanks for your nice videos. Keep on.
Thank you so much ❤️
Too Late Marlene, Land, and Palomino are damn great awesome songs. As much as I like the jams, the ballads on this album almost seem like they are from a separate work. Maybe this album should have been all ballads? 😊
They probably could have split the album into 2 EPs but I'm not sure if that would have made sense for them.
Warren and nick are genials in this album, warren was the exact guitarrist in this period
Land is one of my favorite love songs. I think of an old girlfriend from Taiwan whenever I hear it. Some of my favorite love songs ever are by this group. Simon had songs here inspired by women. Funny considering he had married Yasmine in 86. They remain married today.
Great review great album
Beautiful synth album
I love the BIG THING album. I saw them two times on the tour for this album. My Duranie friends and I flew to New Orleans to see them there and what an adventure that was. Sat very close to the guys at the hotel bar they were staying at and Simon dropped his cigarette under my chair... 😅 This tour had backup singers dancing with them on stage and it was so much fun. My favorite songs on this album are "Do you Believe in Shame" which, like others have said, is part of the trilogy of songs Simon wrote about one of his best friends passing away. ("Out of my Mind" and "Ordinary World"). I also love "Palomino", and "Land". Oh, I think I've heard Simon wrote "Too late Marlene" for his wife Yasmin..."Too late Yasmin".
Big Thing reflects the changing of the music scene of the 80's last years, I think Duran Duran starts here to show us the first steps of survival. This is an excellent album, dealing one more time with new textures, new sounds and reinventing themselves as an important creative band. It was here in this album that I felt, they will resist to the "fight of time". My top 5 tracks on this album: Palomino, All She Want Is, I Don't Want Your Love, Too Late Marlene and Do You Believe in Shame. Again another excellent cover album by the artist Hans Arnold. A very important note about you: it's always a pleasure hear you singing and I must say you have a wonderful voice. Thank You again for another excellent video.
Like shore driving é a melhor de todas! Que solo!
BIG THING fantastic !! Its in mine top five band albums
There was a recent review of Duran Duran and they said they were one of best bands of absorbing the current zeitgeist of music … Big Thing was the most incredible examples of it.
Plus the single version of IDWYL was a lot better.
You can hear JT singing just,a litle bit part on Yo late marlane
il miglior album del DD, fantastico, dalla prima all'ultima
Another terrific breakdown/reaction. Check out the Big Thing Tour from Milan performance. It's fantastic. So are you!!!!
Thank you Brian!
Here is a bit of trivia for you. In the video for "I Don't Want Your Love" the drummer is David Palmer who played with ABC. He also played drums on John Taylor's solo album Feelings Are Good ...and Other Lies.
...my obsessive fascination is in your imagination now shake it up!!!!!
*breaks out into dance*
UNDERRATED
I fell in love with Duran Duran 5 years ago and got to see them live in Sweden last May! It was a rather small concert and I had standing tickets right at the front near the stage. I was singing my heart out the whole time! Amazing experience to see my favourite band in the flesh!
that's so cool! Glad you enjoyed the show :)
Land is probably my favorite DD song. Simply gorgeous- I would guess he wrote it for Yasmin.
John and Warren for me have always been good together. That instrumental they do together at the end called Lake Shore Driving!
Of their 'lesser known/underappreciated DD albums,' i would put Big Thing and Pop Trash as their two best. "Too Late Marlene" is a wonderful composition. So smooth. "Palomino" sounds like an unlisted track from ARCADIA. Tonight is my first time (on your Reaction) listening to "I Believe." This was not on the US version of the album when i bought it in 1988. The Big Thing tour was the first time I saw them live (outside of Power Station, which was only 40% of them).
The Palomino song was made for you lady. Congratulations
I’ll never tire of it 🥰
I just saw them on Monday at Red Rocks in Colorado. It was incredible! It was my 11th time seeing them, but it's been 18 years since the last time! I've been a fan since 1981!
It's getting better and better 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Hi, another great video. I agree with your comments about Too Late Marlene, a great track but I'm surprised its number 1 on the Spotify download list. For me, the best 3 songs on the album are All She wants Is, Do You Believe In Shame and, of course, the awesome Land. Keep up the good work, Liberty hopefully next.
Right?! Notorious, Big Thing, Liberty, and The Wedding Album tie together so well!
Good God I had forgotten how fantastic this album is! I purchased THE DAY it appeared in my local record store. I wore it out I played it so much. Wish I had a new copy... :(
Too Late Marlene is popular because the live version is amazing! And jazz fans especially like it!
By "All She Wants Is" we were on Round 2, and I felt like an experienced Pro. LOL
My second fave from Duran after "Seven and thr Ragged Tiger"
Next to Notorious the Big Thing album is my 2nd favorite album.
I went to see Duran Duran at a half full NEC in Birmingham, England on Christmas Eve 1988, and they linked up 'Winter Marches On', 'Palomino' and 'Too Late Marlene' into their set-list, and it was truly magical.
It has to remembered that no one was making albums like 'BIG THING' at that time, and because of this i think it absolutely passed the snooty music critics by in 1988.
With regards to 'PALOMINO', it has this unique psychedelia atmosphere surrounding it. I'm pretty sure on the original album sleeve, it describes that Warren Cuccurullo was playing 'LIQUID SLOWHAND GUITAR' - a description i love ❤
I firstly I love your deep dive videos! They are walks down memory lane for me. Secondly, John’s bass on this album is actually great. It’s there, but is subtle on side B. You should try and hear the version of Drug (it’s just a state of mind) that actually came out in the 88 release! The bass is SICK. Also bear in mind that he was playing a Factor bass guitar which was a bit different. This album was a Big Thing to me in high-school in 88, the soundtrack for my teenage drama both heartache and hype! Drug: Please do check out the original version as opposed to the Daniel Abraham mix that you listened to in your deep dive.
Hey Neil. I had a listen to the other version and personally I prefer it!
I love your videos! I got to see Duran Duran in Austin earlier this month. Great show!
That's definitely a different mix of Drug than the one on my vintage CD of the album.
This album is awesome , my favorite songs are Big Thing and Land, great video, greetings from Peru
Thank you, greetings to you in Peru 😊
@@michaelcruz7704 I Was talking about glitterKitty's video... But it would've be cool if those songs have videos.
