The story of "Dark Circles", Duran Duran's unreleased first album.

  • Put together by Peter Paphides and broadcast on radio a few years ago, Nick Rhodes and Stephen Duffy talk about the very early days of Duran Duran, and how TV Eye kind of stole Mr Duffy who took the songs that were effectively to make up DD's first album - and then transformed into The Subterranean Hawks. The real story of "Big Store" is told and Mr David Kusworth tells the poaching tale from TV Eye's point of view.

    The classic Duran Duran we know I agree is the better lineup, however I still adore Stephen Duffy and his work and it's interesting to explore how it all began. In the end we are lucky enough to have got two very interesting artists / groups. Would love to hair them play together now.

      There's a great interview during nick and Stephen's dark circles concerts (right before the release of astronaut)... The interviewer asked Stephen does he have any regrets?
      He said no, because he had no interest at the time making DD a pop band. He did not want to be a pop star. So, if he stayed, duran duran would have been a foot note, not a hugely successful band.

      Richard Edwards Neither do I . Simon had the right sound for Duran Duran whereas Stephen had a totally different sound and vibe that just wasn’t Duran Duran. Simon was the icing on the cake for them, his looks , charisma and energy was what made them stand out against everyone else at that time. Stephen seemed too laid back and so did his music . Him leaving was actually the best thing that happened as no way would they have been anywhere near as successful if they’d have had Stephen . Everything happens for a reason.

      NIck Rhodes is the heart and soul...Simon is a good front man, but I prefer the instrumentals..I bought their first album in 1982. The next day I bought Rio. Simon's voice didn't really appeal to me untill Arcadia.

    • @mena580
      @mena580 4 года назад +2

      @@anthonyintexas Nick and John may be the heart but Simon is the soul. I got the DD album in 1981 when I was 11 and wrote down the lyrics for every song. Songs that only Simon could pull off because he has an ACTUAL tenor voice. In fact Simon was a rare find for DD. He harmonizes with the bass/drumline and heavy synths, he doesn't compete them. Plus his good looks helped the band with their image as John and Nick have said so in interviews.

    "The John Charles of modern pop" according to Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne. In the mist of top 40 one-hit wonders, Stephen has managed to maintain and sustain the art of writing beautiful lyrics that some how may have been over-looked by the masses of young screaming girls. Stephen is the diamond in the rough.....with a glitter of hope in between. The world is better off by not having Mr. Duffy as the front man for a little known band called Duran Duran. It wasn't meant to be.... Is love better than wine? Only if you HOLD IT.......Tin Tin at his best.

      Mike D I have to disagree. Stephen Duffy is one of the best lyricists of our generation. After Duran Duran, he released 2 synth-pop albums and then started a folk rock group with his brother. All of his post Duran Duran is brilliant. So, I am glad he left too.

    • @gingerindian1141
      @gingerindian1141 10 лет назад +9

      Stace Karussos I don't think it matters if SD was a great lyricist. He simply was not charismatic enough for DD. I have to say SLB is a good lyricist, but whether he is of the 'genius' status, or SD for that matter, I am not skilled enough to determine outright. But - Le Bon is a frontman essential for global success, but SD I don't think is. Yes DD were money makers, pin up, sell outs. At least a portion of the entity which is DD was. But not it all, as many DD fans still after all these years would testify too.

    • @clonmult
      @clonmult 9 лет назад +9

      +Stace Karussos (replying a year late ...) Stephen Duffy has been good in his own right, but to claim him as one of the best lyricists of a generation can't be backed up (he's not a patch on David Sylvian ...). And of course he did "kinda" sell out when he was working with Robbie Williams. But I do love The Devils album.
