  • Duran Duran's "Pop Trash" era, which unfolded in the early 2000s, marked another chapter in the band's career. The album ‘Pop Trash,’ released in 2000, saw Duran Duran exploring a diverse sonic landscape that included elements of pop, rock, and electronic music. The band's lineup during this period featured members Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and Warren Cuccurullo, their last album as a trio before regrouping with John Taylor, Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor.
This era introduced a more experimental and electronic sound that was emblematic of the evolving music scene of the time, it incorporated elements of 60's and 70's influences, blending dance numbers with slow ballads. The ‘Pop Trash’ album itself was a testament to their ability to adapt and reinvent, with songs like ‘Someone Else Not Me’ and ‘Mars Meets Venus’ delving into themes of love, modernity, and relationships. This period demonstrated Duran Duran's enduring ability to stay relevant while continuing to push the boundaries of their sound. Enjoy!

The beauty of Duran Duran is that no two albums of theirs are alike. They kept recreating and this one shows a different side of them.

Honestly, it's one of my Top 5 favorite Duran Duran albums. Beautiful at times and just "weird" sounding - Like a continuation of Medazzaland. Love it when DD experiments. All sorts of cool sounds and effects along with heavy Beatles influence.

Playing with Uranium is my fave on this album. When they played it live the big screen behind them played repeating nuclear explosions over and over and it was so cool.

Yes! I saw them in Chicago on that tour. Loved it! It was the first time I saw Warren Cuccurullo. I remember thinking he looked like Vin Diesel in Pitch Black, which came out that year or the previous. He was rockin the bald look with the muscles.

Your journey through these albums has been so wonderful, reliving the time and place of each in my life. Pop Trash doesn’t disappoint. By the millennium I’d sort of lost my “Duranie card.” Then this album arrived and two decades later it remains one of my favorites. Lava Lamp and Hallucinating Elvis are among my favorite songs to play or listen to. I think the album really fit the time and caught the retro-flash-rave style, at least in America. The boys dressed the part too, as I recall. Musically, Warren had been on my radar since his Missing Person’s days and I always felt he was a good fit with the band, plus he brought some great songwriting skills into the fold to and his influence is strong on this collection of songs. And Nick always brought the textures and layers, no matter the style. While not every song on Pop Trash remained on my playlist, the album did remind me how amazing the band could be and it wouldn’t be long before the original lineup began talking about a reunion. Thanks so much for your ongoing deep dives! (And a Great jacket! Perfect for the album!) ❤

Interesting fact, this song was originally titled "Tomorrow Never Dies" and was submitted to the "Bond" people as the track for the same titled movie, but was rejected so Simon rewrote it as "Last day on Earth" there is a version of the Bond song on RUclips 🙂

    Hi there ...
'Someone Else Not Me' is for me a timeless classic. It's animated video is heavily influenced by The Beatles 'Yellow Submarine', and Warren's beautiful guitar solo is lovely nod to George Harrison.
'Lava Lamp' is a lot of fun; and I loved that they lifted a slight sound effect from 'Rio' 😉
'Starting To Remember' is wonderfully trippy, and I personally love the lyrics, as I do the way Simon delivers them - but the crowning moment for me is 'Lady Xanax' 👌
Warren Cuccurullo's final hurrah sadly. Warren gave Duran Duran a very interesting edge between 1986 and 2000; in fact, I think the output Duran Duran produced during those 14 years still sounds like it should be made in the future!!
Hope you enjoy 'Danse Macabre' x

Yes, it was intentional. Cause when they lost John, they went full slow tempo. Something they had to do without a strong bass sound.
The Beatles also started out in Germany, similarly the song, Someone Else Not Me was released in Germany due to the similar tone of the song to the Beatles songs.

It’s a very strange album and I literally only listened to it for the first time a few weeks ago. I feel like it gets better the more I listen to it although there aren’t many standout moments BUT Someone else not me has actually become one of my favourite songs, it’s really beautiful and soft and the lyrics are quite heartbreaking. The best part of this was you humming along to that beautiful melody at the end btw. So pretty ❤️❤️❤️

I remember not liking this album at all the first couple of times I heard it and put it away for a while. A few years later, I was listening to the Duran discography in chronological order and found I quite enjoyed it. The more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. I think it was just ahead of it's time, and I just wasn't ready for it. It kind of reminds me of The Cure's The Top album. Very psychedlic with some great songs and definitely underappreciated, IMHO.
I have a playlist of favourite songs by my favourite artists, and it's funny how many songs from this album are on it. Personal highlights, Lava Lamp, Hallucinating Elvis, Pop Trash Movie, Mars Meets Venus, and I absolutely love Playing With Uranium.
Thanks for another great review. The pop-up facts are appreciated as well.

En este caso estoy en desacuerdo contigo, pues este disco se ha transformado con el paso de los años en uno de mis favoritos.
Ojo con el nivel de los bajos en la ecualización de tus fonos, puede que baje la presencia de la voz.

Being hispanic of course I love the spanish version of "Someone else not me" and listening to Simon sing in Spanish. I love "Last Day on Earth"...probably the most Rock DD has ever sounded. Hi Glitterkitty, another fantastic video, thank you. I have great memories of Pop Trash, in that time I was living in Berlin and I remember to listen Pop Trash a lot. I think this album has great songs but it's not so good as Medazzaland and John's departure before stills be a great loss in that time. My top 5 are: Lady Xanax, Mars Meets Venus, Pop Trash Movie, Playing with Uranium and Someone Else Not Me. You asked a question about Portuguese language in the interlude, it's not Portuguese (I'm portuguese and I don't recognize what is it...) You said Someone Else not Me was edited as a single in Germany but I think this was an international edition because I bought it in Lisbon (Portugal). Thank You again and I'm waiting for the Astronaut video.

I think this is the first time I haven't gotten to comment "in time" with this release!!!! I was late to the party. The video for "Somebody Else Not Me" is beautiful. The song is excellent too, however this album should've probably started out with "Mars Meets Venus" instead. Then maybe it could have been a single too. I tend to try to find live versions of certain songs on albums, like I did with "Playing With Uranium." Going back a little bit, I like to find maybe a fan video for something like "My Antarctica" (which I know you brought up in a deep dive) and I found a nice one for "Land." Thank you for your info and reading this longer comment than usual. Myself and the FB "Duran Duran Apreciation Group " really appreciate you! Cheers from Orange County, California!❤

I really enjoyed your take (always do). It's funny hearing you say some of the same things we all did when each of these albums came out. "Kiss Goodbye/Last Day On Earth" was how they opened the show when I saw them in that era. It was awesome! It would've made a great Bond theme with the intro and song together. Too bad. :( I remember feeling let down with this album when it first came out. The previous album didn't really do much at the time and when this one hit shelves and the first single was "SENM" and that video dropped I knew it would do even worse. It's not that it's a bad album...they just made bad choices that just didn't give it that explosion it needed at release (and the record company sucked at promoting it and didn't give it any real push). They needed one of the heavier songs and a smash video to be the first single release and to open the album. Maybe if they had swapped "PWU" with "SENM" in the album order? I don't know. If "KG/LDOE" had ended up a Bond theme it would've been fantastic! This album definitely grew on me with each listen. Honestly, this video is the first time in a long time I've listened to it again and I think I needed to hear it again through headphones at an older age to really appreciate it. Duran Duran is like 4 bands in one and hearing the music each way is like a new experience each time. There's listening to the album in your room or car with speakers blasting, listening to it while watching the music video and the story gives it a new twist, there's seeing it live with that on stage energy they have ...and then there is the headphones experience. This is definitely an album that headphones make so much better. They always have such amazing production on their albums and you can miss a big part of that without headphones. You can listen to a DD album for years and years but then decide to finally listen to it through headphones and it's like the first time again. Funny story ...I met my now wife on a Duran Duran site (DrDuranDuran) in 1999 when I put up an ad that was slightly pen pal, slightly personals and slightly musicians wanted. 😅 I just needed a Duranie in my life because I lived in Hillbilly Hell. So, I was looking to make music and friends but also looking for maybe something else. I guess it didn't hurt that I said I looked like Simon and John's love child. 😂 So, when "Mars Meets Venus" came out right after we had been talking for only a little while ...we were like "SHUT UP! NO WAY! THIS HAS TO BE THE UNIVERSE TALKING TO US!" ...And we've been together ever since.

"Someone Else Not Me" was trying to ride off the coat-tails of the "Ordinary World" comeback success - it was *too obvious* and in this case, lightning doesn't strike twice. I'd heard a promo for German radio - they played "Uranium" and it was Si's first time hearing the record version - and he complained it was like too fast or something - he was adamant. I remember hearing a live version from like House of Blues or somewhere of "Elvis" that was much heavier and grittier and rockier than the studio version. The tour footage of a bloated, puffy sweaty "fat Elvis" LeBon just miming thru the songs with so low energy - had he had another friend OD or something during this period? He was going thru a depression. Or maybe Yasmin was - and he was bummed out too. His heart wasn't in it. Like it comes thru on Mars/Venus like LeBon would read the telephone directory aloud if Master Bates asked him to.

Pop trash movie is an absolutely brilliant song . Reminds me back in the summer of 2000 trying to convince everyone that Duran were still brilliant ( nobody believed me ) 🤷🏼 😂. How wrong were they 💪

One of the worst Depression and Anxiety and Poor Health benders of my life was the year 2000. Loved ones died that year. Family revealed they were worse than I could ever imagine. Friends moved away. This album was my pick-me-up (off the floor). On a brighter note, I can't help but think of the X-Men film (released that year) when I hear Playing with Uranium. Perfect theme for the X-Men. And I always imagine Last Day on Earth with someone going on a sci-fi sky-cycle visiting all her loved ones before rocketing into space, dying, and coming back as a ghost just in time to pull the sky-cycle out of its dive.

Cheers and welcome back! I agree with you, when you say it is a kind of unorganized album, but it is not surprising. The way I see it, the band was lost in the way to follow, after John Taylor's departure. It is the first (and only) album in which John have no contribution at all. Yes, the once so-called "sexiest man on earth" was a brain too, and was an important piece on the machine he invented with Nick. A pop-trash-like object is the reflex of that, in an album with only one single taken from (Someone Else Not Me) which is the proof that the band was really out of shape and out of attention from radios and medias. The good news, as far as I'm concern, is that the reunion of the original line-up that followed would not happen without the hard times on these years. In my opinion, "Someone Else Not Me" could be written after John's departure to follow a solo career and form the band Neurotic Outsiders. As for "Pop Trash", well, it could be the "few minutes" of fame in this album. By the way, this is the only really good song, in my opinion...

and it's sad to think that JT, Trigger - that back then even when not directly in with DD while doing Terroristen etc he was creating more musically speaking than he does now. There's no JT on the Dense McComb not on Future Crap nor on Toilet Paper Gods. The guy just sits back and laughs and smiles for the video - and lets his junior partner Master Bates run the whole show. Shame on you, JT!

As a DD fan of 42 years I don't even consider Pop Trash to be a DD album, it is a TV Mania album released under DD's name. In the past every Duran album was written by all the members of the band, but PT was written entirely by Nick Rhodes and Warren Cuccurullo and the only input Simon le Bon had was phoning in Nick's lyrics. It's a decidedly average rock album that sounds nothing like DD, but that said it's still better than the execrable Medazzaland. Thank God the reunion happened!

Nice “walk through the album tracks” by a wonderful girl……by the way got the album from the time of issue, Japanese edition, have to say that was a bad period for the band though this is one of my favorite, beautiful ballads, singing along melodies. Warren support is huge. I think you missed to say pop trash movie is related on some way to Mr Andy Warhol which the band are passionate about. In hallucinating Elvis not female high pitch notes but Simon as you stated right. Thank you 🙏 ❤

Quite an underrated album, except for the end which falters a bit. Lady Xanax and Mars Meets Venus are 2 of my fav Duran Duran songs. One of the reasons this album was panned was because most considered it too eclectic and unfocused, but does have some really unique ideas that linger in the brain

Best track: Prototypes (because it reminds me of Skinny Puppy)
    Last Day on Earth
    Mars Meets Venus
    Hallucinating Elvis

Last Day on Earth is one of the standouts for me, especially the end (54:38): "Waking... standing... feeling... breathing..." The most mundane things in life that become meaningful when done for the last time. FYI, the song was originally "Tomorrow Never Dies," a would-be James Bond theme song that they repurposed (Here's that demo: ruclips.net/video/l1MkOsXLObk/видео.html) Also, Kiss Goodbye is a prelude to Last Day on Earth. You can hear it in the melody. Pop Trash may not be an album of hits and singles but so many tracks are melodically gorgeous, and it's one of my faves post-1983.

About the rest, I love Nick’s bridge at the end of _Lava Lamp_ just like you, the guitare solo from Warren at the end of _The Sun doesn’t Shine Forever_ and the opening of _Lady Xanax_ too.
