- My motorcycle was falling apart on the highway. I took my 1985 Harley Davidson Sportster 1000 Ironhead for a ride. After the ride, I noticed a part of the motorcycle was missing. I also figured out the fuel mileage the motorcycle got on this ride.

I didn't realize until now that at 25:20 the deer are right next to the road trying to get over the fence. Glad I didn't hit one!
You rode your 1985 one-owner Ironhead over 100 miles and ONLY the horn fell off??? You done good! Seriously, I have owned many Sportsters over the years, I have two Ironheads right now. Stuff fallls off. The horn is common, easy to replace Enjoy your Ironhead!
That’s funny. I need to check every nut & bolt. Thanks for watching & for taking the time to comment.
You had fun , you made it back home without pushing it back and anything that falls off can always be scotch taped back on. Our post two days of 100+ has moved on. Looks like Minn. out that way.
Yes, I was told on the telephone yesterday that the heat wave up there was coming to an end. Texas isn't cooling down anytime soon though. It does kind of look like that in some areas. Very dry though.
im a one owner of an 85 identical to yours! The horn issue is common i built a special beefier bracket for mine. My 85 is my pride and joy watching someone else ride one identical to mine is awesome!
That's awesome! I did not know the horn was a common issue. I'll have to figure something out with mine. I'm glad you got some entertainment out of the video. That's why I made it. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment.
I bought new a 1985 sportster in 1985 and I loved it. I would toure on it often, even with the 2.5 gallon fuel tank. Always took back roads and would start looking for gas every 50 to 70 miles. I never ran out of gas and it was the most dependable Harley Davidson I ever owned.
I got a laugh reading the checking for gas every 50 to 70 miles part. That's going to be me when I do an overnight trip. Thanks for sharing that. As soon as I started reading your comment I got the visual of someone in 1985 buying a new bike.
I used to joke that I was going out hunting for gas on my one.
That's funny@@youfritter
I only got 58 miles for a full tank. 3 miles on reserve.
Sir, you are out of control. One of the coolest stock Harleys I’ve ever seen.
Thanks!
Thanks Loved your ironclad. These were the last of the real Harleys. They are just fun to ride
They really are a blast. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment.
Hope you find it!
Thanks! Mark my words I will eventually & it will be documented on video.
Jesus That’s even the Fob they gave me at the dealer. Still have it somewhere. 😅
That's cool you said that because its got 1984 or 1985 right on it. Now I know it might have came with the bike.

Once you get down to the hump for the frame. They dry up fast. I hit reserve many times. Nice little piglet. I bought a new 87 883 on the coldest day of the year. I was 18 lol.
Good too know & awesome story. Ballpark on how far the reserve might get a guy?
@@freemansgarage seems like it was 15-20 miles. I sold her after it got to the point when anytime I rode someone almost killed me. Too many Iowa drivers coming to civilization to work lol
Don't worry about the horn. It is not the first time that has happened! Use some rubber washers on your new one and it will last longer.
That's a good idea. Thank you.
I believe it's recommended to check the oil once the engine is at operating temperature
That's right. You believe correctly. That is what the owner's manual says to do. But I'm pretty good with this bike at being able to tell where the oil level will be when warmed up by looking at it cold. I did check it at the picnic area, but it wasn't shown in the video. But now that you mentioned it, I should probably play it safe & start checking the oil the way it's recommended to be done. Thanks for watching the video & for taking the time to comment.
I had an '82 , bought it new .Never took it on a long ride though ,it killed my back .
Bought new in '82 that's cool. I felt it in the back a little bit on the last couple of miles.
$ 3995.00@@freemansgarage
I recently picked up an 82 Ironhead and during the 140 miles from pickup to getting it home, the generator crapped out, it blew a handful of gaskets and then the engine blew up. Getting ready to dive head first into a top end rebuild... Hopefully, there aren't more problems... But knowing Ironheads, there will be. 🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼
Wow that's wild. I hope the rebuild goes smooth. If you remember, you should let me know in a comment that it's back together & on the road again. I'd be interested in knowing how it went. I appreciate you watching the videos.
@@freemansgarage The ironhead is still down for the count... Was getting the motor back together and buttoned up and was torquing the rocker box bolts down to the LOW end of factory specs when suddenly I heard a snap and the bolt spun free... The front head apparently had a crack in it and couldn't handle 14 lb/ft of torque. Plus, I had to replace the oil filter plate as a previous owner WELDED the oil filter to it. 🤣🤦🏼
Seems like you've had your fair share of problems with this bike though...
Looks like your horn was still on there at your picnic stop. Hope that'll help you track it down. 15:00
Thanks! Horn hunting video coming soon to the Freeman's Garage Extra channel.
Use threadlocker on every major fastener, perform routine maintenance and don't beat on it too much (ha!). The damned thing will be reliable enough.
I'm definitely going to be using some thread locker. I'm also going to try & find that horn on video. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Get you some gloves with armor on the knuckles. Some chinesium ones are about $20. Reconstructing hands is impossible if you get a doc that doesn't know what he is doing. I am enjoying your videos. I have a 1998 evo I have been working on..haven't gotten to ride it yet. I also have a 2004 Moto Guzzi 1100. Texas looks pretty good.
I'll get a pair. Nice bikes. I hope you get to ride them soon. Texas does have some pretty good roads. Thanks for watching the Sportster videos & taking a moment to comment.
You can see the snake at 24:52
I would like a Freeman’s Garage t-shirt. Where’s your merch?!
Oh man I'm workin' on it! I want one too. They gotta be good though. I don't want to do anything lame.
What a cool bike!
Thanks! Thanks for watching the video & for taking the time to comment.
I dont know if that horn was stock anyway. I am pretty sure my 83 Iron Sporty had a big chrome unit hanging below the keyswitch? I will have to look at my old photos. Cool bike brother the 1000cc Sporties are old enough to be vintage and new enough that you can actually ride them.
I know what horn you're talking about. I think that's an early horn but I'm not sure. That's true. These bikes are right in a sweet spot. Thanks for watching the video.
Did Frank and Jesse James ride around your parts ? I once asked google a question "how do you mend a broken heart " .. the answer was the Bee Gees. By the way, the bike sounds like a tractor. On the video you could see a cable flapping around.. bab boys don't use horns.
That's funny because I have no intention of ever using the horn but it's a piece of original equipment, so I want it back on the bike.
I was just thinking , if you put the fuel valve on "ON" instead of "RESERVE" ,you would get a warning when you were low on gas .
That does make sense. I don't know how far reserve would get you though. That's something to maybe find out. Thaks for mentioning that. Did I have it on reserve in this video?
Yea, it was on reserve . Maybe if you filled the tank , ran it on "on" until it sputtered , check the distance , put it on reserve you would know the range . Seems like there aren't alot of places to fill up where you're at though . Good videos , you can say I'm a little behind (I've been called worse) , but I'll catch up .@@freemansgarage
Thank you for saying something. I looked in the original owner's manual that came with the bike when new & I looked at the petcock closely & holy cow I learned something new. I did have it on reserve. The Honda parked next to the Harley is the opposite. Now I know. I might have to test out the range in a video. I need to do the impossible & find that horn on video first though. Thanks for watching & for taking the time to comment.
Don't worry about the horn , doesn't look like there's anybody to honk at anyway .@@freemansgarage
nice score.
Thanks. I appreciate you watching the video.
I never have been a fan of the buckhorn handlebars , Black widows MC Texas😂
I can see that. Thanks for taking a minute to leave a comment.
What's the name of the budget 38 Special artist/song at 20:15?
That's funny. Royalty free. "American Idle" by RKVC.
Jeff Carlisi called and would like his riffs back.

I like bike #freemansgarage
I had an 81 and it was good for about 120 mil. Per tank
That's cool. It looks like mine is good for about the same. Thanks for commenting.
You might want to invest in the owners and/or HD shop manual. Air pressure at 24 psi front and 26 psi rear. Nice bike.
Not trying to be "that guy" but tire pressures are based on 150 lb rider weight. For each extra 50 lb. add 2 psi @ rear, 1 psi @ front. The maximum tire pressure for all tires is 32 psi. I agree it's a nice bike. I have an 85 XLH 1000 (3rd owner 7,500 original miles) and need 30 psi rear and 26 psi front to compensate for my XXL body.
@@frank9919
I took those tire pressure specs directly from the Harley Davidson 1984 Sportster owners manual. It states that those are the pressures for up to 300 pound passenger load. It also states not to exceed 32 psi with original equipment tires. You are welcome to purchase the same owners manual and compare.
I have the original owner's manual that came with the bike when new & a 1985 shop manual that was purchased at the same time as the bike in 1985. I have never looked in either for tire pressures because the bike has newer tires on it. I think the tires are 20 years old but they're not 1985 tires. My assumption has been that newer tires are made to run higher pressures than the old ones therefore if I look in the manual, I would just see pressures that are too low for the tires currently on the bike. But now that you mentioned it, I will look in the manual & at the tires more closely though because actually haven't been able to make my mind up about tire pressures the entire time I've had the bike so far. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks the info. That's awesome you have an 85.
By enemy lines you mean wild life?
I don't know what I meant. I just thought it was funny. But now that you say that I guess maybe snakes.
it is a Sportster...not a hog.You have a lot to learn but we all did once.
ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES
I would not put the leathers on. To each there own.
I hear ya.
Robertwells, I'll send flowers. Ever seen a person who went down without leather on ? End result... Makes you want to throw up !! BUT, to each his own.
@@clintwoodruff1187 I've bin down. I don't ride to be in uncomfortable. Just My way. Would never say You should do. I said I wouldn't. 🇺🇸😁
sucks you lost the horn
oh yeah harleys dont leak oil they mark there territory
I will find it somehow. That's true they do!
Yes, no question about it Idiots should not be allowed to own Harleys!
What's going on?
The stock horns are garbage anyway . Nobody could hear it at speed except you. Worthless. Whats not worthless is this... Locktight ! Locktight, locktight, everywhere ! RED locktight for 'steel to steel ', BLUE for 'steel to alloy' ! And your shit will stay where it belongs. Especailly, "cylinder base nuts" ! I promise you, everything NOT locktighted, will come off the bike !
Good luck.
I believe you. I will be Locktighting things on this bike. Thanks for watching the videos & for commenting.
Hahahaha!!! Chick Bike anyways !!!
I get it but sorry I can't afford to waste any more time on negativity. I gotta go. Best of luck.
Getthestoneman - NO, RACEBIKE ! We call big twins "Tractors" ! Or sometimes, " garbage wagons" !
Read up on the history of Sportsters from their roots on the "flat tracks", from 1957 to present day. When you know what you're talking about, you probably won't say shit the makes you sound 'ignorant' ! IRONHEADS were going over 200 mph back in the 1960's at Bonneville ! Actually, they were the FIRST motorcycles in the world to go 200 mph !! Yeah, some "chick bike", knotthead !
