The content we have at our fingertips is crazy. Just 10 years ago videos like this were rare. If you wanted to learn what it's like to be in the field, you had to go in the field. As someone who's just a few weeks away from starting work as a technician, these videos are invaluable. I'm starting out with a much greater knowledge base to draw on than any beginner you'd typically see, and that will be instrumental in my success early on. You, Ivan, Keith, ScannerDanner and EricTheCarGuy are a big reason I have successfully diagnosed countless problems with friends and family vehicles, as well as my own. And the knowledge I've gleaned from all these channels is only going to get more valuable when I start doing this for a living. Thank you.
I can feel your frustrations on getting wrong part or just waiting forever on delivery driver, time is valuable in auto industry esp when you have to make money i really appreciate your videos mr. o. I want to thank you for such educational videos and what you mean to the youtube community
Ok EricO, thing is I am soon to move to BC Canada, in UK right now, I am 63 yrs old and retiring, what you have shown here is how honest and trustworthy you are, I have learned lots about North American vehicles from watching your vids, (I did 20 yrs as a mechanic here in UK when younger) if I were closer when I moved to BC I would come to you for all my vehicle needs, which made me think, your next step could be featuring customers who travel just to get you to fix their vehicle, as I think that will be pretty common soon, in fact maybe buy yourself an old Motel to put them all up, I would happily be one of those customers, either way, another great logical fix top work, Dave
Your kicking videos out like Vanessa and the kids left on vacation without you. This was a simple test but as usual, your commentary and tips added a lot of value. I'll be hanging around for more information on that Actron. My local mechanic uses one...in fact, I think it's the only scanner he has.
Haha, yeah it is a good scanner but should not be the only tool of a professional shop. It has to many limitations. It is not my opinion it is just a fact. If you run a pro shop with this as your only tool, your days are numbered...
Thank you Eric for another great video. I have the Actron CP9580 which I bought in 2010. It is good basic DIY code scanner but only accesses limited PIDs but I am happy with it. God bless you Eric O. Paul
I haven't had the chance to work with the actron scan tool, but the Autel MD802 is a GREAT DYI scan tool. it gives you make specific codes, ABS/SRS Transmission, etc.. totally worth the 200 bucks it goes for.
Thank you.. I have had this issue for a few days and decided to use my father in laws reader. It popped up with the p0051 code. Now I know how to do it. 😊
one word...Wow mechanical genius South main auto and eric o are my idol love the knowledge keep it coming i watch your channel for hours i love it and tell every body bout it at my shop now at lunch we all watch you lol haha!!!!
You saved me a bunch of cash. Thanks I can't believe the price difference between our auto repair guy and Amazon. I just know someone is making a huge amount of money for nothing
Awesome video Eric! I am one of those viewers thats waiting for you to put out a video on the best diy scanners. I know you mentioned it a while back. For me it has to be the Autel. Give us a nice in depth review! Thanks man!
Thanks so much for this Sienna video. I was beginning to wonder if anyone in your neck of the woods drove siennas. I have a 2004 Sienna with over 220,00 miles and it's been a great car.I just changed the bank 1 sensor 1 AFR which was quit a bit harder to get to, especially lying on cardboard on my gravel driveway. And guess what , I use the exact same Actron scanner. Do you have many siennas in your area? I really love your channel. It's the best.
Eric O, great vid!! I've been on the market for new DIY scan tool, boom. you were doing it. Holy smokes, you been reading my mind, lol!! I missed couple videos due to lack of notifications. but this one did notify on my phone! yay. I finally caught up! I'll wait for your reviews first before I'll buy. Thanks, later, my friend!
A friend brought me his 05 Accord 2.4L the other day that was setting the MIL intermittently. When I scanned it it was showing P0141 (B1S2 heater code) stored but not turning on the MIL at the moment. I did these same tests, expecting to see an open or real high resistance but got around 8-9 ohms on the heater which comes to only about 1.5 - 1.7 amps. I backprobed the heater wires, connected my Vantage meter, and saw a nice PWM square wave for the heater from 0-14 volts while the engine was running, so obviously PCM and wiring to the sensor check out. I thought the heaters always failed open but it seems they can go intermittent or just slightly high, too. I found a spec in my 07-10 Odyssey factory service manual (assuming they're the same) for the rear O2 heater and it gives 5.4 - 6.6 ohms. I can only assume the heater is either failing intermittently or just going high enough resistance to set the code when the engine is cold. Will find out after I put the new sensor in on Friday.
First time I've seen it intermittent. It's always been open when I've checked one with a heater code. Thanks for the confirmation of that! I couldn't 100% verify the bad sensor, since heater resistance can change with heat, other than ruling everything else out.
johnaclark1 Big huge major thing to point out with the repair of anything electrical, mechanical or even biological, every possible failure type can and does often present as intermittant unless of course you're talking about catastrophic failure of a given component. Anyone with experience will treat every diag process as potentiality intermittant in the way they handle things like harnesses, connectors, sensors, etc. If you were to try (and why would you) you could turn 80% of those "sure deals" into intermittant nightmares.
What an excellent review of how to do things properly and efficiently. Good diagnostics don't have to be slow, and you don't need a lot of fancy tools. Regarding the antiseize, most of the O2 sensors I've put on come with their own little packet or have it on already. Maybe it's becoming an urban myth, but I've read a few times that the wrong antiseize can mess up the O2 sensor, presumably by mucking up the sensor end in some way. Does anybody know more about how that happens? I suppose when it gets really hot, you could change the local oxygen concentration around the outside of the sensor, changing readings. Or, maybe when really hot the wrong antiseize could drip down onto the end of the sensor, covering the end that needs to sample the exhaust gas.
Im so hooked on your videos cause the way you diagnose vehicles you inspire me to diy my own cars just wish you where here in Georgia so you can film my car too god bless
G'day, Mr. O! I am Sharing... A very useful tool! (Actron - CP9690) "The tool use is very straight forward and intuitive. Within 10 minutes of playing with it you have most of its function down. I used it to read a check engine light. Read P0420 which is catalyst inefficiency. I let the car warm up and then selected live diagnostics. You can see all the PID's or you can create your own custom list. I like that feature. I selected the PID's relevant that I needed to see to confirm a diagnosis. Short and long term fuel trim shows me that the engine is running rich (too much fuel in the mixture). Coolant temp is spot on. Voltage feedback from the O2 sensors showed me what I needed to see. Then I recorded a short 5 min drive, and graphed the data. Downstream O2 sensor is all over the place. Verified that the O2 sensor is working properly. P0420 in my case is a bad catalytic converter." Plus, the scanners troubleshooting is a nice feature as well. Useful for Veterans, and inexperienced wrench turners alike, It gives you a checklist so you know where to start and where you should start searching next. It certainly help to save money by not throwing parts at a vehicle. Thank you! Cheers! :-)
You are so good at finding alternatives to cursing, love your way around it :-P I got a Autel MS906 as a DYI tool, but the MaxiDAS DS808 is cheaper and looks nice as a DYI tool.
Hey Eric, watching your handy-dandy magnetic LED work light, I'll bet you don't miss your trusty ole' 100W incandescent combination drop light and branding iron.
I am anxious for you review ! Your old one was a CP9580. That is a CP9690. The only down side to that model is the current software only handles ABS and SRS up through 2013. It would be nice if it handled tire pressure monitors. 4 years is a long time without updating the software. Actron is now owned by Bosch and that model looks identical to the Bosch OBD 1350. another brilliant video , looking forward to the code reader review as im in the market to get one myself ,they seem a very usefull tool for the toolbox , thanks !
Thanks for taking the time to make this great video. The Toyota OEM part number for this sensor is 89467-08070. It will cost about $223 plus tax at your local Toyota dealer. I bought my part on Amazon from a Toyota dealer in Daytona Beach Florida for $155, no tax, no shipping. Toyota gets this part from Denso so another option if you don't want to order the part over the Internet is to go to Advance Auto Parts. They sell Denso #234-9049 for $159 plus tax.
I know this video is dirt old now, but would like to know which Actron that is. I had a 9690. it wasn't all system, but I needed it because it did OBD1. Otherwise, would have gotten the 9695. Anyway, I liked it. Have a better one now. Thanks for yet another great video!
Yet another fantastic and informative show. I was hoping to see the Actron data stream on an good AFR sensor. Maybe you have that on another one of your excellent vids.
A Toyota repair vid? I saw it on the feed and thought... "Man, this should be short and/or boring." Right, Ivan? ;) Haha Sure enough. :D It's the same in my shop. Toyotas come in, and it's yawner oil changes and brakes and the occasional filter or sensor. When the big three show up, it's time to pull out all the fun diag toys and go gremlin hunting. Great vid, Eric. We also need the easy simple ones as some of us could use refreshers and others just don't know how to handle the more common easy stuff. I bought one of those Actron 9690's last year to keep in my truck. It's nice, tho it takes FOREVER to pull codes compared to it's taller predecessor the 9180. I think you need to calibrate your torque sensor I only heard one click don't forget about the Grant torque setting lol I've had people comment on my vids saying it is impossible to get the wrong parts from the dealer happens more than they think
Great video Eric....I laughed at the beginning of the video because I don't think Mrs. O realized she was on video when she was bending over doing who knows what.
First thing I noticed too. Had to stop video to see if it was mentioned in the comments. I knew it would be. I'm not sure I want to know what that says about us, lol. Now back to concentrating on the other content. :)
Eric, you should take a look at the Autel MD802 or the Autel diaglink for $110. They both do live data and mode 6, would love to see what you think of them.
Hey Eric the scanner you used in your video appears to be the same as the Bosch Obd1300 I use. Maybe it's just a rebrand? Either way I'd like to see what you've got in store for it. Keep up the good vids.
This is by far my favorite channel on youtube. I know you have a review coming out on that actron but can you tell me if it's worth the loot? Thanks for everything you do!
see how you are lol i just picked up an otc . researching them the otc bosh and actron seem to be the same. you got the one with the changeable cables.since i wont be working on german or obd1i opted for the next higher model.took a long time for the first firmware update but i can print from it and do a couple other ford things.will be really interested to see what you can do .
jorge perez Its just a simple running light or even a lamp holder from a dead vehicle. I have one I use one. that has probe wires and also alligator clips
As a former Toyota parts guy I will say it's easy to screw up o2/af sensors the Catologs whether microcat or snap on even with the vin will give you both calfornia and regular 48 state emission options I have made that mistake many times.
Stephen Whitaker so how did you handle the guys that would order up all possibilities just to cover themselves from this type of thing? There must be a very high return rate, good new untouched parts back in stock.
Hi i did similar test on 2002 Camry 1AZ-FE the light comes on when i first start the egine but turns off after 15 seconds. If i clear the code light comes on 15 seconds then off again. Is that the expected behaviour?
Have you ever run across a zero fire issue on a 1997 dodge with a 5.9 in it???? Coil is new plugs new rotor is new crank position sensor is new. Any help would be appreciated
I have 2009 Sienna LE 3.5Lv6 with a P0051 error code bank 2 sensor 1. I’m having a difficult time deciphering the correct Denso O2 sensor part number for the correct part. Might you be able to provide me with the correct part number. thanks in advance

Thank you Eric O. I am no longer a parts changer just hoping to fix my car. Test, Test, Test and verify. 👍
Same
That is right , always test first and learn how to verify first
The SMA Motto: Test but Verify
Thanks Eric, Americans are very willing to share their knowledge on RUclips, and thats a good thing, regards, Stewart, Australia.
Better out than in I always say

Oh yeah, our local guy is a parts changer.
I remember the early 80s when they scared you to never use a test light for many years I thought that was the real deal.
Great as always Eric.
Just Subscribed, As a mechanic myself.... I think it's good ethics and Transparency to show customers what you are about. Cheers from Toledo
I don't need stinkin notifications I'm already addicted to this show.
I love waking up to a new SMA video. I feel like a kid waking up to Saturday morning cartoons :)

That beautiful sound of a tool tumbling through the engine bay and hitting the ground below...;)
That was EASY, Eric O. A + Rating
I swear I'm gonna be the best DIY mechanic thanks to Eric o lol
At 8:13, "snug it up to factory specs, of course....Click". It does not get better than that!
a la Elderly Iron.com
as long as you hear the click you know it is right!
You need to do a Scotty Kilmer grunt when tightening to factory specs!
Thank you.. I have had this issue for a few days and decided to use my father in laws reader. It popped up with the p0051 code. Now I know how to do it. 😊

I got the 5 dollar OBDII from Amazon - bluetooth to my Android phone... saved me mucho grande deniro!

And support SMA on Patreon! This content is gold for the DIY'er.
well eric i went out and bought the autel maxidas diag tool. 850 clams and it works great i get to see data in real time
What an excellent review of how to do things properly and efficiently. Good diagnostics don't have to be slow, and you don't need a lot of fancy tools.
Regarding the antiseize, most of the O2 sensors I've put on come with their own little packet or have it on already. I think you are right in the sense that people may put on to much. I use a very small amount of copper never seize just on the threaded portion

You are so good at finding alternatives to cursing, love your way around it :-P I got a Autel MS906 as a DYI tool, but the MaxiDAS DS808 is cheaper and looks nice as a DYI tool.
Try to keep it rated G
Great vid! Your humor makes the vids entertaining. Keep up the good work!
When that socket started to fall I instinctively froze and listened for the hopeful sound of metal hitting concrete!!!!!
I think we all do that lol almost every time too
Autel is the entry level scan tool of choice according to the Staten Island master. Well that's what he sent me anyway 😎
Hey Eric, watching your handy-dandy magnetic LED work light, I'll bet you don't miss your trusty ole' 100W incandescent combination drop light and branding iron.
Great Video. I've seen heater failures. Not often.
Thanks bro. YOU ARE GREAT
Love your video.

Bosch also owns OTC now.
I like the subtle AvE references.
Skookum as frig.
Thanks for the video. I have this same year Sienna, so some good info. I dread the day I would have to access anything on the rear bank on this thing....
Yeah they are a little snug back there
Can't wait for the Action review, need it right now, patience has bottomed out----- Where is my review ??? this is an emergency !Tell the customers to come back next week an there's real work to be done.
another brilliant video , looking forward to the code reader review as im in the market to get one myself ,they seem a very usefull tool for the toolbox , thanks !
Yes they sure are
Thanks for taking the time to make this great video. The Toyota OEM part number for this sensor is 89467-08070. It will cost about $223 plus tax at your local Toyota dealer.
I still use my nearly 20 year old Actron to do quick checks and resets. You can't beat their reliability.
Have you ever noticed the difference between denso/OEM? usually there is a good reason if OEM is 2-3x the price.
A Toyota repair vid? I saw it on the feed and thought... "Man, this should be short and/or boring." Right, Ivan? ;) Haha
Sure enough.
I only use it for scans on the road if someone needs it. The Code connect is nice, as it gives top fixes for codes. Basically Identifix for the diyer's. Just don't take it as gospel. Direction at most.
I prefer the older 9180 for the quick stuff like just reading or clearing codes. That thing is lightning fast.
I got another Toyota vid coming up really soon...more exciting that an O2 sensor or rusty exhaust pipe haha
Looking forward to it! As a Toyota specialist shop (poor career decision - hah!), life is pretty boring around here ;p Toyotas are 90% of my clients, yet the 10% other brands I do work on are 80% of my profits. heh.
I think you need to calibrate your torque sensor I only heard one click don't forget about the Grant torque setting lol
I've had people comment on my vids saying it is impossible to get the wrong parts from the dealer happens more than they think
I think Toyota specify medium 'grunt' torque setting for this vehicle Leon?
I uses "uhgs" instead of grunts...
Medium grunt torque spec? Sounds like Leon. Good to see ya, mate! :-)
aussiebloke609 cannot beat the Grunt torque specs 😁😁😁
was that torque setting one or two clicks of the elbow have to make sure you get the correct number of clicks
Good vid as always. I have the OTC 3211 which I believe is identical to your Actron.
i bought the autel scanner for diy it seems to be pretty good
first! morning routine on hold now..
another key for me, thanks sir Eric....
What bulb did you use to check heater control from ecm? Is it a regular 194 bulb?
Great video Eric....I laughed at the beginning of the video because I don't think Mrs. O realized she was on video when she was bending over doing who knows what.
I seen that . she was mooning us
Lol yeah she was painting a coffee table
First thing I noticed too. Had to stop video to see if it was mentioned in the comments. I knew it would be. I'm not sure I want to know what that says about us, lol. Now back to concentrating on the other content. :)
Great video man. I've learned a lot from you. Keep up the good work!
Hi. May I ask why you use a small bulb (194?) with the two wires to check the heater circuit instead of a regular test light? Thanks
It draws the same current just easier to do one handed
Excellent video, having same issue with my Toyota 2008 RAV4, will try it out and revert back to you. Thanks,
Got the p0051 Blues? That Beefy Juicy taste! Need a little excitement? Snap into an AFR sensor! OOOHHH YEEEEAH!!!
Hi Eric: How did you get the a/f sensor test light. Could you share the link? Thanks God Bless you and your family
If you happen to know, out of curiosity I was wondering if this sienna is a 3.3L?
What I'd like to know is why I need a heater circuit. What happened to if the heat gauge says warm cut the heater on?
Eric, you should take a look at the Autel MD802 or the Autel diaglink for $110. They both do live data and mode 6, would love to see what you think of them.
Great videos as always!
Hey Eric the scanner you used in your video appears to be the same as the Bosch Obd1300 I use. Maybe it's just a rebrand? Either way I'd like to see what you've got in store for it. Keep up the good vids.
Here down south we laugh at o2 and Evap codes. Put a black sticker on the instrument cluster and keep truckin.
hmmm werè geting spoiled, a smar ewer`y day.. as allways Eric great video...
Holy guacamole! I dont have all the Verus rigamarole but I do have a 8 year old Actron!
Sometimes that is all we need!
Thanks for the tip 👍👍👍👍
Have you ever had a P0151 code, gone to check the circuit at the connector and found both heater wires to be hot when koeo?
Sure it could be "hot" on both until the ground side is turned on. If both wires are hot though that means you do not have an open in the O2 heater :D
Eric the scanner looks new. Can you make a review of it.
Nice job Eric or the price every DIY:er should have one
Looks like you are getting the hang of the Vantage pro.
Yeah it was a small learning curve from the mt2400
This is by far my favorite channel on youtube. I know you have a review coming out on that actron but can you tell me if it's worth the loot? Thanks for everything you do!
IMO it is
any suggestions for the same code but a good o2 sensor?
see how you are lol i just picked up an otc . researching them the otc bosh and actron seem to be the same. you got the one with the changeable cables.since i wont be working on german or obd1i opted for the next higher model.took a long time for the first firmware update but i can print from it and do a couple other ford things.will be really interested to see what you can do .
Yeah Bosch/OTC owns Actron
Hey Eric did you make that test light used in 4:35 by any chance?? Where did you get it I want one like that, easy to probe, great video!!
Hey bud what was the part number bank 2 sensor 1. I don’t want to run into the problem u had
Your videos are awesome!
great video but where did you find that test light with the bulb
jorge perez Its just a simple running light or even a lamp holder from a dead vehicle. I have one I use one. that has probe wires and also alligator clips
but to turn the light on you need positive and negative
As a former Toyota parts guy I will say it's easy to screw up o2/af sensors the Catologs whether microcat or snap on even with the vin will give you both calfornia and regular 48 state emission options I have made that mistake many times.
P.s. Your videos are a small addiction now 😂
Stephen Whitaker so how did you handle the guys that would order up all possibilities just to cover themselves from this type of thing? There must be a very high return rate, good new untouched parts back in stock.
is this code strictly for the front o2 sensor i have just replaced my front o2s but im still getting the code
Thank-you 👍
Hi i did similar test on 2002 Camry 1AZ-FE the light comes on when i first start the egine but turns off after 15 seconds. If i clear the code light comes on 15 seconds then off again. Is that the expected behaviour?
Have you ever run across a zero fire issue on a 1997 dodge with a 5.9 in it???? Coil is new plugs new rotor is new crank position sensor is new. Any help would be appreciated

bank 2 sensor 1. I’m having a difficult time deciphering the correct Denso O2 sensor part number for the correct part. Might you be able to provide me with the correct part number. thanks in advance
Nice diagnosis & video as usual. Gotta love wrong parts to slow you down.
Terrific job as always brother. Now don't put out a video for a few days so I can release mine 😁
OK haha I will give you a one day window.. is that enough time?
I have the same code on my 2006 v6 Camry. I'm assuming it's the same engine as in the Sienna. Do you know the oem Denso part# ? Thanks for any help

Great video! Hey Eric where can i get one of those test lights? Thanks.
That one I made
South Main Auto Repair cool!, is it just a 12v bulb and two lengths of wire, was there any connectors on the end?
I need to find a mechanic like him over here in Orange, California.
