Charley Burley - Was an American boxer who fought as a welterweight and middleweight from 1936 to 1950. Archie Moore, the light-heavyweight champion who was defeated by Burley in a 1944 middleweight bout, was one of several fighters who called Burley the greatest fighter ever. Burley was the penultimate holder of both the World Colored Welterweight Championship and the World Colored Middleweight Championship.

One of the greatest boxers of all time! Burley was part of a group called the Black Murderers' Row who were renowned for being feared throughout the boxing world and never receiving a shot at the world title. Definitely one of the best fighters I've ever seen on film, unfortunately there's only 1 fight film of him in existence but I did the best I could with what was available. www.patreon.com/haNZAgod

This is the only footage of him and yet it offers so much to learn and incorporate.

There is something so elegant yet so destructive about this boxer. His use of controlling rhythm and distance is very incredible and when you combine it with his explosive punches your seeing poetry in motion
He moved every part of his body at the same time. He was not there to be hit.

Well said. Archie Moore "The Old Mongoose," is my favorite fighter of all time. I studied the martial arts and the style that I studied was derived from India. It is called Vadha. The mongoose is the styles mascot, being the snake killer.

What really gets me about this video is not just how majestic Burley looks, but how good Smith looks as well. Look at the combined footwork and movement. Modern fighters just dont fight like this

Let me sum this up. Charley Burley was the absolute best. He didn't take a lot of unnecessary punishment like Greb, Langford, Zale, Ali, Charles, Marciano etc.... Burley was the very definition of a scientific technician. He fought the absolute best of the black Murderers row and heavyweights on a routine basis and hit harder than Greb. A LOT of top fighters blatantly ducked Burley including Robinson who wanted nothing to do with Burley or any of the black Murderers row. Burley was better than Pep who was a fantastic fighter but Willie was stopped badly by Sandler. Burley was NEVER counted out or suffered a stoppage loss like a lot of his peers. And because of his uncanny skill level he left with his health intact unlike at least 70 percent of the fighters from that era.
The closet thing to Burley you will likely see when analyzing his style is a prime Roy Jones. I often look at Roy as Burley 2.0 in terms of his skillset and as payback for the opportunity unjustly and criminally denied Burley. I feel that Burley however had better fundamental technique than Roy and he used his jab more.
WOW, My Goodness...although I’d never heard of him until just now, looking at this Mr. Burey, I can see that he was something special. Extremely quick hands and body movement.

And he did that more than once. Charles has the best resume in boxing history by far.
It's difficult to say. Someone say that Greb has the greatest resume ever but it is difficult to argue with Charles's resume. For me, he was more greater than Ali and he would have beat his amateur version in light-heavyweight.
Franco Garcia yes but Ezzard Charles was also a lot bigger than Burley, and Burley fought one of their two fights with a broken hand. Charles was still a beast though

So elegantly smooth! His evasiveness and counter punching abilities were top notch and it appeared to be second nature to him. He'd beat many of these youngins in this generation even! Currently reading two biographies on him. Such a humble champ who never got the chances he rightfully deserve but his reigns as World "Colored" Champion in the welterweight and middleweight classes should be looked at as official reigns. All of the guys in the black Murderers Row in those years were superb fighters! Charley Burley stands out above the rest though.
There just won’t ever be fighters like Charley Burley, Harry Greb, Sam Langford, Mickey Walker, Barbados Joe Walcott, Bob Fitzsimmons, Henry Armstrong, etc., that were so good they’d troll other divisions while staying relatively the same weight, often being outweighed 20,30,40, even 50 lbs at times. Just incredible fighters mentally and physically.
Sometimes you hear of these legendary fighters talked of in hushed tones by "boxing hipsters" and sometimes it's a bit of an anti climax when you finally see footage of them. Not Burley though. He was magical.

He fought like a modern day fighter. He had tremendous footwork & could control distance so well. It’s a shame he never got his shot at the title & the fact that only this footage has surfaced of him fighting is a shame. I would love to see any other footage of him; especially his fight against the Mongoose

Terrence Crawford reminds me a bit of Charley Burley..like Burley, he uses feints very effectively to land shots..and I think crawford uses both his jab feints and footwork feints similarly to charley

You can see where Floyd Mayweather incorporated some of his style, particularly when he jumps back from a punch, also the very talented young fighters under Floyd like Devin haney and Shakur stevenson has very similar stlyes!

His style is literally identical to Tony Canzoneri. I just noticed that.
The half angle step-back as a defense / reset option, lateral circling / stepping into side steps, slides, and low lead arm to shoot up-jabs & pawing jabs are their similarities. Their sub-style, punch volume, choice of offensive strategies, and further defenses were different.
If you boil it down...Charley Burley was a boxer-puncher and Canzoneri was a counter-puncher - just that both took those styles to another planet.

Without a doubt he was the best of the "murderers row" boxers who was never given a title shot.
Ray Robinson just would not fight him saying to his trainer when a matchup was suggested "I thought you liked me and worked for me"
Boxing is the only sport I know of where an elite athlete can be almost entirely overlooked and/or forgotten.
Ezzard Charles generally regarded as the greatest light heavyweight of all time said Burley was the best boxer he ever faced.
Archie Moore regarded by many as in the top 3 all time light heavyweights after being beaten up and decked 4 times by Burley said “there may be a better fighter in the whole world than Burley, and if there is, I hope they never get in the damn ring with me.”

He didnt. He just said he needed a bigger paycheck because Charley might mess his pretty face. No one was willing to pay Robinson lol so the fight never happened. SRR also said the same about Cocoa Kid (another member of the BMR)

By watching his movements, Ray Robinson would win because he'll be the aggressor. If Charley fought Ray Robinson, he'll have to switch up his game plan and become the attacker but Ray Robinson has phenomenal footwork, he'll figure out his game plan eventually. I got Ray Robinson knocking him out by the 8th, 9th, 10th round.

@thatbronzeboij let's go back to April 30th, 1942 when Ray and Charley met each other for the first time and was on the same fight card. Ray weighed 146lbs that night and charley weighed 153lbs. They both knocked their opponents out in the 2nd round. Ray was a natural welterweight and barley was a natural middleweight. Ray watched Charley that night and said to his manager " I'm too pretty to fight him." Ray was the dancing master while Charley was the defensive master. Now, if they did fought, if Ray loss, he would've beaten charley in the rematch, but Ray robinson at that time before he went into the military was something special. Looking at thus footage of Charley, I believe 100% Ray Robinson wouldve beaten Charley because he saw him upclose and watched his movements that night of April 30th, 1942. Ray would've dazzled the judges with his skills and beat Charley.

Interesting boxing style, he would fight latterly instead of frontialy, a very smart fighter who would size up and anticipate an opponents moves. Roy jones mimected his style

Charley Burley, one of the few boxers who had a minimum chance to face modern boxers, i think..
Lack of technique in the boxing past days made this prodigious boxers the greatest of that time, but i think even an evolved boxer of this days could be in trouble against one of that very few boxers of the past.

I think modern boxers would get walluped by the boxers of generations past. DOnt let the modern guys cut weight and actually fight at their size and the old school boxers clean their clocks. I think boxing is one of the few sports where talent has regressed over time with a few exceptions

I don't think "regressed" is the correct term. I think the term "changed" or "evolved" is better. Evolved doesn't mean that the newer form is better...it just means that it is what is commonly found today. For example....birds are actually EVOLVED Dinosaurs, but you can't tell me that an eagle is a better hunter than a T-rex on the ground.
Boxing before the 1920's had A LOT more clinching and "lost" hand checking techniques than boxing in the 1940's, but fighters in the 1940's preferred to use more explosive combinations with their footwork due to the common trends of that time. As fighters moved into the 1970's & 1980's, the fighter with more than 100 fights on their record became rarer & rarer. Thus, (to go along with better sports science) the super athlete became a more common occurrence. Note that athleticism & skills are different things. Thus, Sugar Ray Leonard was more athletic than Charley Burley, but Burley had additional skills & techniques considered uncommon/ lost by the time Leonard was around. But in all cases...Elite level is elite level...whether it's the 1920's or 2018.
TainoMantis I'd say devolved since the 90s. FIghters used to have extensive amatuer careers and lengthy active pro careers (8-10 fights a year). Upwards of 200+ amatuer fights, 60-80 pro record if not over 100. And those numbers go up the further you go back to towards the 1930s-40s. Fast forward to today limited amatuer experience and pro careers that are 1 maybe 2 fights a year once you crack the top 10. With a 30 fight pro career seems normal when back in the day that might have been your first 2 years. Now the ehalth and pay and well being of the fighters is better today than back then.......but the skill level has decreased ....in my opinion with a few exceptions. LIke Lomo and a few others
Burleys style of boxing was frowned upon in his time. His defensive style basically kept him from fighting most all the top fighters of his time. Not because he wasn't good enough, but because many feared he would make some of the top names in boxing at the time look foolish. Possibly the greatest fighter to never win a world title.
