- During Inspection we found the the front struts and bump stops were worn and deteriorating. Ride quality was surely suffering. Due to the age and mileage, it was best to replace the MacPherson strut assembly rather than piecing the units together. The customer states to install a custom high flow air intake system on the 5.3 powerplant to unlock a throaty intake sound by removing the intake baffle that came with the stock intake plumbing. We talk about the benefits and drawback of installing such intakes. Check out the Banks Performance link below to shop for premium level performance parts for your vehicle. Unlike the cheap knockoff units, the Banks Power products are designed with vehicle specific engineering and are made with the highest quality materials.

It’s always nice when upper management visits the workers…
The Wife Unit cameo bears a caffeinated gift. I refer to it as life support. Good job, man!
The wife unit? You'll be easily replaceable by ai
I fail to see how ai will prepare and deliver a cup of coffee. Maybe you can enlighten me.@@epstein_isnt_dead7726
The Wife unit is most gorgeous and lovely. Ray is most fortunate.
@@epstein_isnt_dead7726lmao that’s what ray calls his wife. Been a running joke.
You gonna drink hairspray before anyone needs to worry about AI
That intake sucks for 3 reasons.
1, You're correct. it will suck in hot air instead of cold.
2. It is smaller in diameter than the original (hence, the reducer adaptor) and won't flow as much total air but the owner will THINK it has more power because the air velocity will be higher so the computer will richen the mixture (not always a good thing to do). What is the before and after diameters where the sensor is mounted?
3. It is metal instead of plastic so it will absorb the heat (heat the air even more) especially after hot soaking.
Mhhh some cold intake is ok but need to be specific design for the car and only the intake make no difference at all, you need as well a tuning map to recalibrate sensor end engine to the new air quantity end depend of the type of the car maybe a new intercooler if is a turbo engine ecc.. but people don’t know and just buy cheap part only for the sound 😢
Doesn’t really change that much on a non high performance car for a high performance car it’s better but since the changes for a non performance car are so negligible it doesn’t really matter as much as people say it’s a vast over reaction by people who don’t really know much and just go off videos
Those "cold air intake" kits do not provide any colder air that the stock - they just make more noise.
@@larryjohns8823K&N intakes increase horsepower and mileage.
@@scottcampbell4678 nope! They don't filter the air as well as a stock filter (testers on YT). All sales hype as to more HP too.
Ray, you tightened up those top strut nuts just as I was yelling at the screen "Don't forget the strut nuts!!!!"
Ray knows all and hears all
For a minute or two I thought you were going to disappoint me... but you broke out the convolute and protected those wires that needed some love. As always, well done Ray🏆
The English language is a jerk.
Convoluted means extremely complex and difficult to follow, intricately folded, twisted, or coiled:
-
Meanwhile convolute, in this context today, simplifies and makes the wiring EASYIER to follow.
@@MonkeyJedi99 Easier
@@dylansmith5820 Ah, pedantry.
Even BETTER pedantry over a typo!
You have slain me with your well-reasoned and clearly stated rebuttal!
@@MonkeyJedi99 ew. I literally pictured you tipping your fedora and then I cringed to death.
@@Gizmetti You shall be missed.
Where do we send the flowers and condolences cards?
You went above and beyond by adding the covering for the exposed wires. Bravo!
I agree with the bolt placement
In my opinion the only thing that intake is going to do is make it look shiny under the hood
That was the easiest front suspension job I've ever seen. Nicely done. Lauren bringing coffee is awesome. She's a messenger of the gods for sure. The rubber trim should have been done before fixing the heat shield in place, so you don't need to cut it out. Going above and beyond with the wire loom makes for a happy customer. Have yourself a great day Ray, Lauren and everyone else at the shop.
ever tried coffee with ground chili peppers?
@@felderup Yes, I did a few years ago. It was quite a "HOT" experience. The guy dropped almost half a flask. I looked like a cartoon character spewing fire. Just a bit more and I would look like a jet engine.😂
@@paulocarvalho6480 my ma tried a recipe for gingerbread cookies that used black pepper, she overdid it and nobody could eat em. from the flavour of any of the hot mod foods, you can tell they'd be good if not for 'accidents'. bit of moon mist ice cream will fix that though.
I bought a set of those flex head long wratchets a year or so ago...total life savers and never knew they existed till I saw you using them at your previous employer! Using them today actually while swapping my 4runner front coils! Lol...that shows something...I am watching you do a front struts while I am working on my front coils/shocks!
I bought my flex head ratchets several years ago without really knowing how useful they are!
I got the ones without the flex head, now I need to get me a flex head set. Just got my electric ratchet in 3/8 love it. Still need an impact. Got my 3/8 and 1/2” (30” long) breaker bars, my jaw gear puller (great for frozen rotors)
This is the place to be if you want to watch Ray strut his stuff
Way back around 2001, when I was still in the Navy, There was a guy at one of the Auto Hobby Shops on base trying to remove his struts only he was trying to remove the center nut. I stopped him just a few threads before launch and showed him the correct way to remove them. The shop was fairly crowded that day and he could have really hurt himself and a bunch of others had I not stopped him. I give him credit for trying to do it himself and save some money but if you're not sure how to do it safely and correctly just ask questions... After that incident if we were in the shop at the same time he would come over and say hi and he always had questions. I didn't mind giving him pointers but left him to do the work. We became friends after the strut ordeal.
I like my true cold intake systems on my late 90's Chevy OBS trucks. They are perfect from the factory.
Welcome to Rayman Ray's. Where we're highly caffinated and properly motivated!
Those baffles on the original intake can be there to eliminate the irritating drone at certian rpm. They can also be designed to remove the resonance in intake air flow that can actualy hurt performance.
Love when you speed up the camera and talk. Funny! Love the wife unit cameo. Thanks for another great video! Always enjoy all your content.
Seeing the Wife Unit one every episode is a great addition, after all she is a very important part of the team. Cutie.
I totally agree! Most cold air intakes are hot air intakes! A basic scanner will show you the intake temperatures before and after! And you can feel the less HP with the hot engine bay. I don’t know how they can advertise coke air part when the intake temp sensor will instantly tell you it’s worse! My best mod/repair was to customize my KN Intake…. I made my own lid for it as well as a fender trim so it sealed to the original cold air intake part! My temps dropped 30 degrees instantly with that new sealed encloser! You can feel that difference so easily on a hot summer day! That’s why real good intake kits have an enclosed box! Like volant. Basically if the top is open then it’s junk…. Might as well buy a cheap intake.
It also looks junk
@@77JazzMan yes. lol bright colored junk…. lol just give me black or silver or gunmetal. Or billet. Those are my only choice colors under the hood
@@addiction2bass haha yeah, I totally agree, but in my case, it’s under the Bonnet,, not the hood,,,im a Brit lol
Thanks for the heads up on the intake- a lot of people swear by them. It's nice to get a professional opinion.
If only there was some type of box where the air filter could be placed, then it'd be wholly insulated from hot engine air. I'd call it an 'air filter box' - it's genius I tellsya.
You consistently have good music playing in the background. 👍
Respecting you more and more ray
Alvin & the Chipmunks helpin' Ray with a suspension job. 😊
You are absolutely correct, bolts should always face downward. I was taught be a aeronautical engineer that if you loose the nut the wing will stay attached ! or what ever you are working on
WOO HOO!! A new video for an even better Saturday!!
Interesting watching you install that air tube kit. I am one of those guys that believe things should be stock . Now if there is enough proof that something can be improved okay , make the change . I just don’t believe all air kits do improve air flow . Well done video . Stay safe , have fun.
the factory air intake system has those resonators (what you call mufflers) to smooth out the fluctuations in the air stream, getting rid of them may well decrease horsepower, but will increase noise, but that may well be why the owner wants it.
One of the rules in aviation maintenance is bolt heads go up or forward if possible, also one of my rules due to OCD, lol, thank you for installing the strut bottom bolts from the top...
I take it that you don't work for Boeing then! 😏
As an apprentice with Rolls Royce aero the golden rule with bolts was HEADS UP & HEADS TO WIND. I have done it that way since the 60s. So I agree .
We were taught the same thing in the Air Force . There was even a tech order explaining why .
I like your attention to detail
As you explained, you didn’t seem to have any enthusiasm for the intake swap. Awesome to include wife unit. Missed a self promotion opportunity not using your mug😁. That strut job was so easy peasy. Great video Ray
Even when you do it the hard way, you make it look so easy.
Howdy from Texas!Im
I installed an SB cold air intake on my 2013 Ram Hemi in 2015. Still works awesome!
It is totally sealed from the engine bay in a sealed hard plastic housing.
It also has a second air intake that extends down to an area behind the bumper. Care has to be taken in water more than two ft deep. It brings in more air volume.
I also installed a 48mm throttle body. Up from the stock 46mm. Looking to go to 52mm and an aftermarket exhaust and shorty headers just for laughs.
This solution has a license approving it for smog testing. Hasn’t set off any lights nor failed smog tests.
I love your channel and your lovely wife. I watch everything and “I do cars”. I am too old now to do much(77) but I still can do generators and small engines.
Very educational
You always do great job. we need you inToccoa,Ga
Is this same company as the van you did last time? It's cool you actually get to work on whole "fleet" for one customer. That's some of recognition for your work
Same name on the side so kinda self explanatory.
You've hired Alvin.
I hope he sees your video and thanks you for the extra work you did that you didn't charge for.
Love the Foo Fighters in the background!
Shhh! The algorithm will tell on Ray.
Ray don't forget to autograph the red pipe with a sharpie , just to guarantee 100 more HP and 10 miles per gallon increase 😅🤣😂
That Lonely Island cut, i had to check I hadn't clicked off the video. Blast from the past
Self drilling, self tapping screws. Great video, thanks Ray.
You spoke of the spring shooting the mounting plate. In 1980, i was replacing the shock section of my vw rabbits strut. The spring collapser (my first chinese made tool) failed by breaking hook off body. I was working in the basement. The shape of vw mounting plate was cone shaped and when it broke loose it went straight up into the floor boards of the kitchen floor. My mom was doing the lunch dishes right above the basement workbench. Needless to say after the initial shock of having a steel "missle" cone come up thtough the floor, i got my butt royally chewed out!
I’ve always wondered why they put bolts in from the bottom, it just makes sense to put them top down, I concur with Ray.
Love that high speed hand action!
Had wife's Yaris fixed, exhaust leaking (not rust) and the air wasn't as cold as it used to be, called local mechanic, he came, did a quick test drive to confirm issues, then took the car to his shop. Today he delivered the car back, exhaust fixed, aircon recharged and cold. Total cost $35. Very impressed.
Pretty cool. I wonder where he gets his refrigerant from to only have to charge thirty five dollars for the whole job , including ac recharge, pick up and delivery and still make a profit.
@@stevewhite3424 The exhaust was probably just a clamp that needed tightening. Not sure how he did the aircon so cheap, it looks like he replaced one of the valve cores as well. It's possible he did it at cost to try ensure future business. Must have taken at least 1 hour of his time including pick up and delivery. Anyway, if he is looking for repeat business and some PR then it's working because I'll likely use him again when it's time for new tires, brake pads and oil change.
Does he work out of a garage on his house ? That price is way low. He had to have lost money or possibly broke even. Maybe he had down time and was bored. Just seems way to cheap.
@@johnhooton3286 He's got a shop about the same size as Ray's with 2 lifts and a couple of guys working with him and yes it's next to his house. We do live in a rural area close to a small town, that probably helps.
Good day to you Ray. Showing us the back of Dave ‘barely counts’ as a Dave sighting. We need you to do a better job of that. However, I really appreciate all the ‘extra’ work to do to make the customers’ cars nice and shiny. Great work and videos. Have a great weekend. Can’t wait till the next video (with a Dave sighting). Click!!!!
AlienRay👽 I get a kick out of when you speed up the video and the effect it has on your dialogue👽
Thank you for installing quality parts and not Monroe garbage
Your attention to detail is awesome
I have a 2007 BMW X3 and as part of my preventative maintenance I covered all my under-bonnet wiring with split conduit and cable ties. I believe its well worth the effort at minimal cost.
Under it's shawl, scarf, women's hat???
What's with the old Atco lawnmower?
@@desoneill5489 I bought it in Victoria, used in the 1990's, mostly for the Villiers engine and the kick start.
this video sooo needed the "Under Pressure" sound track treatment
Mom's old car had adjustable struts where you could press a button for either standard ride or firm ride. Those required 4 since they were all electronic. The mechanic wanted 800.00 each for them. Mom opted to bypass the system with standard struts.
Most of those after market intakes are all about looks and sound. Very few are actually properly engineered to increase performance. For this one to function as a cold air intake it would need to be extended either into the fender well or grill.. As you found out they're also designed rather generically to fit several car models and therefore don't really fit any of them without some minor modification. On the other hand, the struts fit like a glove.
My automotive fix for the day!
Javi Air seems to be sending some volume work Ray's way!
Good endorsement of his work.
The front struts on that Tahoe are so simple to swap, easier if you pry bar the lower control arm down, instead of the strut up.
I applaud you for covering the wiring it will hopefully stop a future money light appearance & possible roadside failure.
Suggestion from an old-timer ;-). Get yourself a set of hand held nut drivers for hose clamps instead of screwdrivers. They are awesome. You can actually ‘grab’ the bolt portion of the clamp and move it at the same time as tightening it. Trust me….you’ll never use screwdrivers again!
Cool chilli pepper background music bud
Reeeee …the help didn’t bring your coffee in an official Rainman Ray’s Repairs insulated coffee mug available in merch store 😎
good job as always . I would have to say I'm not a fan of the mass airflow mount or screws but I guess I'm just picky. like the sound
You and The Wife Unit (Lauren) are so sweet. Great video!
Hello Ray. You could have flipped that clamp (at 50:00)180° and the screw head would have been located where the tip of ypur left index finger is securing the clamp. East peasy and doesn't impinge on the injector real estate.
On another note I do hope you remembered to tighten down the nuts on the top of the strut assemblies and reattached those two wire/cable clamps up on on the driver's side. (I know you love us to bust your chops for any loose ends in your videos.)
PS - Your Tahoe sounds much. much better than today's guest Tahoe
Yeah, I was waiting for you to tighten those upper strut nuts too. We shade-tree mechanics watch you like a hawk. 😊
On a related note, you showed that the bottom nuts were pinch-type locking nuts, but you threaded that last one all the way in with your fingers. What’s up with that?
Thanks for another excellent episode.
5:07
During the fast forward Ray were you singing the Almond Joy commercial? " SOMETIMES YOU GET FREE NUTS, SOMETIMES YOU DON'T " 😊😊😊
Doing things the hard way builds character.
curious why anyone would want a performance robbing, hot air, error code setting, chineesium piece like that.
anyways great commentary on the video, thanks as always ray
Because people are stupid
I always sing that threw it on the ground song when I drop stuff, lol.
Happy to see you go extra on the loom
Nice job installing that thing ray thought outside the box there thats what makes a good tech a good tech
I too appreciate your repairing the wire loom in there. When I'm working on or adding any wiring on my Jeep, even if it's a single wire, I put loom over it. One further thing I do is put a zip tie over each end. It adds a bit of security and gives the installation a more finished look.
As for that PCV hose, I thought that you were going to cut the factory end off and clamp the aftermarket hose to that so as to retain the factory connector.
Using power tools is not always the fastest way to do it. It's always the best
Royal flush has been permanently added to my vocabulary in a different way
Hi ray and wife unit and two young gentleman just finished watching new Intake excellent job and as always you and you’re families be safe Dave and other guy 🇺🇸🇺🇸
re; the "baffles", besides attenuating the "intake" sounds they probably help control any "standing waves" in the intake track at various rpms, which could degrade airflow...or not,,😜
Why did rear shock shake when you grabbed it?
My father always told me: "Make every screw on your technical design at least 1". At least they'll manage to find those when they drop them." 🤣
I must admit that i was cringing hard every time @Ray screwed in those exceptionally long self tapper screws, expecting something behind to catch on the extra length. Ray being such a profesional im sure did check clearance before he put them in but considering the Amateurs who will be watching and possibly doing the same themselves, probably would have been worth mentioning .. normally Ray is so good at explaining all the extra bits hes thinking about i felt a little let down when nothing was said about checking clearance on wires etc underneath. that said well done on not taking the easy way and getting it all done not just the easy bits that lined up like so many others would have done! Excelent work!
Red lock tight she's never coming apart again!
Yup Ray always makes my day 👍🏿
I call it a cool sound intake for a reason. Has to be done right, though. You did a pretty good job with that kit.
I enjoy the chipmunk voice over. 😁
Always nice to see Lauren. You wised up. She's the only reason we tune in. 🤩
Is it me, or didn't you button down the top of the right strut? You said you were going to do it from the top, but you didn't.
Ray. Be very careful about using Loctite around plastics! Those brass inserts in the velocity stack allows the Loctite through the center. Plastic is highly reactive to Loctite and becomes embrittled and crumbles away. You probably have even seen this and didn’t realize the cause. If you use Loctite much more sparingly and kept it only on the metal parts or used a star washer under the head of the fastener it would probably have been much better.
Good morning Ms. Sunshine Lauren!😊
It seems to me that a metal air intake tube would reflect more heat than a plastic one😮. Making it less efficient.
Nice work Ray 👏
The chinisium also fixed the wire loom;).
Ah. You talking about the electrically adjusting struts made me remember my BMW story :D For rear struts i spent 1200Eur for both and I had to struggle to get them for that "cheap", because from a dealer these struts go for around 950Eur each, but hey, originals for way cheaper is a good deal
She’s a good one, Ray. Nice family.
On the second leg you look like one of the bolts didn't have a locking system on it keep going Mitre still like watching you
Love the fast parts also great for kids they love your videos
Did you forget to tighten the last strut mount? Darn it you got me.
They aren't mufflers but Helmholz resonators. Fascinating physics that is underused in high performance exhaust technology since they dampen noise without restricting flow. Also, it looked like you left your aircon vent thermometer in there?
The other advantage of the "Ray's method" for lower strut mount bolts is that it ensures the unthreaded shank of the bolt is in the shear zone..
You always have excellent in the background.[or at least my choice of music].
Have you ever thought of choreagraphing a repair to music?
I know when I do jobs I have prefferred play lists.
Have used K&N cold air intakes on several vehicles over the last 25 years. Always helped HP but lowered MPG's.
I’d definitely want an oil catch can on that set up, imagine the stuff that’s going work its way into the throttle body.
great job protecting the wires, where do you purchase the loom wire shield. yes I was thinking
as the end was coming to the vid, he forgot to tighten the strut! great trick! or did you review
and realized you did not tighten them? so nice fixing up the suspension.
I now catch myself saying 'click' whenever I tighten something. Thanks Ray! 😂
Nice work Ray!!! Always with my morning coffee😊
Howdy Mr Ray hope y'all are having a great weekend,oh and hello Mrs Lauren.
Rainman ray the man with the plan.
By the way, the way that the throw is on that swing Arc of those wrenches just fascinates me. Because I have 🔧 from from Mac tool company that are amazing and have flawless switching gears on the neck of the flex head with about like quarter inch flares on each flex at, it's amazing.
