Fear definitely grows with age. I used to be a professional whitewater river guide (hence the name, lol). I still think it’s a blast but as I got older but more specifically after my daughter was born, all of a sudden I have an overwhelming fear of something bad happening. I always had a bit of fear because I’ve seen bad things happen on the water but it’s way stronger now. And ironically, one of my biggest fears has always been drowning! Go figure. Haha. My daughter is 7 now and I haven’t taken a rafting trip in probably 4 years. Not saying I’ll never go again but I’m probably done doing it professionally for good.

I think having children also changes the way you think about the world. Suddenly, there are all these things to fear... because what if you die and your child is left without you? So you're not only thinking of yourself anymore, but also the people you'd leave behind that you care about and have responsibilities for.

I was a correctional officer here in AZ for 10 years. I have TONS of stories about the haunted prisons I worked at, and how fear played out during incidents.
Also, my fears are change, and failure.
Which is a little ironic, since many times they work against each other, and I have to face one in order to avoid the other.

My fear is humans, and the reasoning for that swings between Social Anxiaty and remembering that in the past if a person was demed outside the norms, they were dehumanized, tossed out, neglected, abused, and in some cases out right killed. I feel like this one walks the line between being rational and irrational depending on the human.

I swear- RUclips must know things or something because earlier this evening, I was having another ✨wOnDerFuLL✨ moment of my paranoia on high alert, because of a thing that happened (well, more like a specific person that I *do not* want to be around for…reasons, and will avoid at all costs, but at the same time, I promised myself that I’d keep it to the best of my ability to protect one of my guy friends from this person, sooo…) that could very well be almost directly linked to a nightmare I had about a month or two ago, then after I finally calmed down 30 or so minutes later, this is the first thing I see at the top of my page. Like, what the heck RUclips 😭 In all seriousness though, this was actually great to listen to after all that. I’m glad I found it 💜

In the book “The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship Of Her Own Making”, there’s a very interesting quote about fear:
“When you are born,” the golem said softly, “your courage is new and clean. You are brave enough for anything: crawling off of staircases, saying your first words without fearing that someone will think you are foolish, putting strange things in your mouth. But as you get older, your courage attracts gunk, and crusty things, and dirt, and fear, and knowing how bad things can get and what pain feels like. By the time you’re half-grown, your courage barely moves at all, it’s so grunged up with living. So every once in awhile, you have to scrub it up and get the works going, or else you’ll never be brave again.“”
Fits well with your idea of people’s fears growing w/ age

Great podcast! For me, it's more a fear of falling than heights. I can be on the top of a skyscraper or the side of a mountain and be fine, but get me up on a wobbly stool and I panic. My oldest is afraid of the ocean, but it's not sharks, it's because she got 'attacked' by a jellyfish a couple of summers ago when she was just splashing in the waves. (Funny, there were dozens of people around us, but it went after her, or she was in the wrong place at the wrong time apparently.) So she wades in ankle-deep at the most and just walks on the shore while the rest of us go in the water.

Scorpion tip: ditch the pesticides and herbicides and wildlife will take care of the bark scorpions and wolf spiders. Grasshopper mice and geckos will eat them up, yum! Also get a blacklight to illuminate the hallways and rooms at night since the scorpion will glow super bright under this light. That is unless they just molted, lols. Also maybe look into what tiny gaps they are using to get into your house and plug them up.

do not suck the venom out xD seek medical attention and let them know what species of snake bit you, if you dont know dont guess just say "i dont know" the wrong antivenom can be a huge problem, they have a general antivenom they can use if you dont know (its less effective, but better than the wrong anti-venom)

  • @junoantaresofficial
    @junoantaresofficial Год назад +1

For snake bites, specifically rattlesnake bites, do not attempt to suck the venom out. Once it is in your tissues it cannot be removed through any type of suction. Keep the bitten area elevated and get to a hospital as fast as humanly possible. Permenant damage to organs is the biggest risk in rattlesnake bites and can happen within minutes, so speed is key.
Black widow bites aren't nearly as scary as I once thought. Most of the danger is to young kids and elderly. Still, medical attention should be sought to mitigate any dangers that can occur such as allergies to the venom or underlying medical issues that could make the bitten person more susceptible to the venom.
My fear is wasps. I used to also be afraid of bees but after learning about them more that's not the case anymore. But the more I learn about wasps the more I am terrified of them. I live near where there are tarantula hawks, they have the second most painful sting on the Schmidt scale of bug stings. I can't even go in that area of the state without freezing in place anytime I hear a sound even remotely similar to their wings. I'm giving myself goose bumps 😆
Edit: DONT PEE ON JELLYFISH STINGS, medical care is the best first option. Next best is to try to figure out what type of jellyfish it was and base first aid off of that. Vinegar rinse to stop the stingers from firing, use tweezers to remove visible tentacles, do not scrape the area that can make the stings worse, then 110°f hot water shower or soak until the pain eases. That's for the very mild stings. If you're in an area with extremely dangerous jellyfish or the symptoms are more extreme than just a sting, rush to the hospital immediately, do not pass go do not collect $200, that is life and death seriousness. Jellyfish are my favorite creatures on earth, but they are scary af.

I find cosmic insignificance very comforting.
It makes it okay if i mess up or make a mistake.
No one will care or remember and there's so much in the universe and beyond that it just doesn't matter.
It allows me to try things without fear of failure because, well nothing matters so why not give it a shot?
I don't have to be perfect because the universe isn't.
It's part of the reason i enjoy looking at the night stars. Everytime i do i have the thought:
Everything just happens randomly by chance but look at how many things had to work out "perfectly" , so many things that are so mathematically improbable, so many things that need to line up exactly, for you to be here staring up at the stars right now.

I have three major fears. 1. Spiders. Hate them! 2. Heights or as some people have told me "fear from falling from high places" because I can go up SLOWLY to the top of places but terrified of walking to the edge. Then number three is weird in my opinion. I cannot be inside a vehicle near water or going through water. I'm scared of getting trapped and can't get out. My biggest melt down is launching a boat down the boat ramp (I live in Oklahoma). I either have to get out, which is what I normally do, or I have to close my eye and/or bury my head in my lap to make it through.

Scorpions, are not happy with some plants, rosemary, fennel, lavender, and catnip. Catnip is something I keep planted around my house because it keeps mice away. It is also a natural sedative for dogs, Skizz, do you still have a dog that eats furniture? When thinking about the movies that you mentioned, Armageddon was and still is one of my favorite movies, but the line that got to me was the one we are sitting on X amount of jet fuel, being shot into space, etc etc etc, built by the "LOWEST BIDDER." Impulse has trust in the machinery, I don't. That is one major difference in us, but I think we are a lot alike other than that. I have seen many rides at carnivals that rely on cotter pins to hold them together, and I don't trust those cotter pins.

One of the people i look up to in my career was stung by a scorpion that was in her shoe. I met her in person not long after that had happened, and it was not healing well. I haven't kept up with her over the years as my focus in my career shifted, but last i saw, she had to have a below knee amputation of the foot she was stung in, and had a hand and partial forearm amputation as well. I did see she was still working with prosthetics, but it's not nearly the same grooming a dog one handed. She's such a badass!

Went to Mexico on my honeymoon and the hubby desperately wanted to go scuba diving and who was I to stop him or not have the experience with him. So we went. I got into the water and went down to the bottom as instructed and immediately went into a full panic attack. Then all the beautiful fish started appearing out of the woodwork and my fear vanished. It was absolutely amazing. I still have the fear but it’s gone when in crystal clear water where you can see all the beautiful things. Do it.

Claustrophobia is my “Achilles heel”. To the point where…if there’s a really long line at checkout with no option to change lines and it’s not moving, I have to abandon my shopping and get out so I can breathe. (Apologies Ikea workers.) I avoid major highways for the lack of turnoffs in case of traffic jams. Any room I am in has to have an exit near me with a clear path. I have to sit on the outside of any seating situation that includes center or wall seating. I avoid crowds in any situation, such that the only concerts I have ever enjoyed were in outdoor parks…I can enjoy the music from far away just fine.😂…All of this might stem from having been hospitalized for pneumonia as a child….oxygen tent, the “whole nine”, plus being allergic to “everything “ so that my daily outing as a child was the walk to the doctor’s office for my daily allergy shot, plus asthma and asthmatic bronchitis…..I need room to breathe and move 🤷‍♀️

I think for me as I've grown up I've had a harder time distinguishing between actual fears and fear I experience due to anxiety. I've always been afraid of lightning, a somewhat irrational fear since it's not a big deal where I live, but more recently loud sounds in general freak me out. Fireworks, in particular, have caused me multiple panic attacks, so I don't know if I can classify that as fear or anxiety. I also get extremely anxious around angry/loud men, but again, I'm not sure if that's fear or anxiety talking. Or if, in some cases, they're the same thing for me. I'm not sure.

Ah, fears. I got some of those! Like being buried alive or parasites! But irrational fears? Well I wouldn't say I have a lot but I do have one.
And it's seaweed and algae. YEP. Something that is barely alive and can't even harm you, yet I will not touch a body of water if it has seaweed. And I mean specifically in the scenario of swimming in them, not like, pictures or eating.
If I'm in the water and some algae or seaweed sticks to my body I will hardcore panic because a completely irrational part of my brain is screaming "WEE WOO WEE WOO IT'S GONNA DRAG YOU DOWN! IT'S GONNA DROWN YOU! GET OUT OF THERE!!!".
Keep in mind I have had no bad drowning experiences with seaweed (Did almost have one similar to Skizz although this was a big foam raft in a big pool I got caught under. Very oof.) nor anything that would lead me to a fear of swimming in seaweed. It could be maybe that I saw a movie as a kid where there was a monster who was pulling people down into the water with some kind of slimy tentacles, but other than that vague memory I have no clue. It's weird too because I LOVE everything about the ocean! I have no other fears tied to it. But, for some reason, the seaweed gets me. The human brain is both amazing and a disaster.

I think my irrational fear that I don't understand why it's a thing is... a cluster of small holes grouped together. I don't know why, I don't know what it is. But like a wiffle ball texture is pretty intolerable.
And some of my fears have different reactions. Like I'm scared of heights, but I'll still go up high. I'm scared of spiders but if it's not in proximity to get on me I will be sort of fascinated by them and keep looking at them even if it freaks me out. But if there's one on the loose near me I will go into rage mode until it's destroyed. So there's that.

I firmly believe that at least 50% of people nowadays who say they fear clowns have heard it so much, from RUclipsrs playing scary games, that they've been convinced it's true.
I grew up watching the films with "Traumatising" scenes.....
    Willy Wonka - Boat Ride
Chitty Chitty..... - The Child Catcher
Wizard of Oz - Flying Monkeys (honestly finding out the truth behind the making of that film is more traumatising than anything else)
Neverending Story - Artex and the Swamp of Sadness
    Watership Down
None of that was ever traumatising, i knew it was just a film and not real. The only film/tv i remember making me really sad as a kid was The Color Purple, because my sisters told me it was based on a true story (apparently it's fiction, but that stuff did actually happen and is still happening today).

I'll just come right out and say it, when the marbles scene from men in black came up it reminded me of my phobia "megalophobia".
And the more I think about it, the more I think Skizz might have it, because megalophobia means "a fear of large sizes".
But what I mean is, imagine what Skizz would look like if you were the size of an ant.
Or if you were the size of dust staring up the worlds tallest building, that's what I personally am afraid of.
And the more I think about it, the more I think that Skizz potentially could have somewhat a relation to this phobia.
So to those who don't have it, be happy you don't cause it sucks!

I don’t have a fear of clowns, but rather a strong disdain for them.
So, I had open heart surgery when I was 16, and being a minor, I stayed at a pediatric hospital. Near the end of my week-long stay, after I’d been moved from the ICU, a pair of clowns came into my room. I assume the hospital hired them to cheer up sick little kids. There were two problems in my case, however.
1: I wasn’t a sad, sick little kid. I was a pissed-off teenager who wanted nothing more than to be left alone.
2: A surgeon had sawed through my sternum mere days ago. So my chest was literally broken.
Now to give those clowns credit, their jokes weren’t terrible. The ones they told were actually geared towards someone my age (iirc they did the one about the fish bumping into a concrete wall). They even got a chuckle out of me, but that was kind of the problem! Laughing HURT! I think after like two or three, my mom saw the rage in my face and shooed them out before I could muster the strength to walk over and try to hit one of them (not that I actually would have).
As for irrational fears, I’m afraid of going to prison for a crime I didn’t commit.

You can keep scorpions from coming in your house. It is not easy, but it is possible. I have them bad. I had to seal up a lot spots, mostly under the sinks around the pipes. Also, keep your door jams sealed and replace weather stripping regularly. Get a good pest company. They should come bi-monthly. I can tell you mine, but not sure how you feel about advertising companies on your comments. It works best if all your neighbors also have scheduled pest control, but the main thing is get rid of the food, like crickets, and that helps with keeping the scorpions from hanging around. My old apartment we had them crawling up our walls and on our ceiling. Valley livin' bro!

I don't know how I'd feel working there and dealing with them. We do have ways to get rid of them and even have fun stuff that goes on your foundation that helps prevent them from getting into your house. I know I'm a couple weeks late but here we are XD
Also Skizz, if these are in AZ too, the spider you saw with babies is called a wolf spider. They are everywhere in Utah and you can't step on them without a bajillion babies on you... XD

I know I'm late, but a trick I learned from an old childhood youtuber was that when you feel hurt, take a moment to think:
"Will it matter in 10 seconds?"
"Will it matter in 10 days?"
"Will it matter in 10 years?"
And they topped that with saying that all that pain you might have experienced in school; all that worry over popularity. It won't matter.
For me, I've figured out that what matters is how *I* treated people. Everything i regret from school came from my worry that I hurt someone.
For more basic fears, I fear heights, lakes, and stairs in dreams

I've been a SCUBA diner since I was 12 and I can tell you that it's so much better than being on top of the water. You can see everything. The scariest part is seeing something (a manta ray for example) come out of the 'mist' so to speak. If a shark is coming at you then you punch em in the nose, that's where all their senses are pretty much.

I actually didn't know what the best treatment was as previous stings haven't bothered me like this one did! I have two kids so I figured I'd look it up just in case they ever got a serious sting. Turns out: rinse sting with vinegar for 5 mins and then run the affected area under hot (not scalding but as hot as you can tolerate) for 20-30mins. I was so surprised to have such relief from just hot water, having a medical background I was completely perplexed, but it absolutely worked!

Everyone has fear(s) of something, it depends on who you talk to about them. Some say that a person has specific fears because that was how they met their demise in a previous life. I don't know if it's true or not.
Some of my fears are Heights (Although I've never been on a plane, however, I think I'd be fine - as long as it's an enclosed space), along with Snakes, Spiders, the unknown, and dying alone, although it's not something that affects where I live - piranhas, and finally being in a situation where if there's even at least .0007% chance of mechanical failure - including roller coasters.
Although at one time I used to be a clown - for a few short months, I can see how people can be terrified of clowns -
No thanks to movies like "It" with the psychotic clowns.
Rational or Irrational, they're still there. I love the complete silence and dark sensation. Although the ringing in the ears during extremely silent moments isn't something I like, it's also a part of the process I guess.
Like Skizzleman was discussing, I've also experienced the feeling of being watched when there isn't anyone around, especially in the country/ woods.
    Interesting podcast!

the situation of being alone in a room with zero noise and going "crazy" is mainly because your brain creates filler noises!! Your brain will make random noises and sounds, white noise, etc as a way for you to be able to recognize noises in your surroundings 🙂 it also, as impulse said, makes it easier for you to hear the noises inside your body.
Being deaf, I can't stand having my hearing aid off without listening to something because all I hear is the filler noise. it freaks me out so badly sometimes. so im usually always listening to music or videos to block out hearing the filler noise :')

I know this podcast is super fun but I'm going to get a tad bit serious and talk about my experience. My irrational fear is choking on food (and by extension, vomiting). To the point where I've been diagnosed with specific phobia of choking (aka pseudo dysphasia). If I've choked on something, or if I irrationally believe that something will choke me or make me sick, I will avoid it at all costs. I haven't bitten into a raw apple in about 3 years now because I choked on one once. I also have an eating disorder called Avoidant-Restrictive Food Intake Disorder that limits what I eat based on certain textures and/or whether something has the capacity to cause me to choke. It's a tough time when you literally have to eat every day! Some people's phobias like snakes, they can pretty much avoid for most of their lives. And that's 100% valid and doesn't make it less debilitating. It's just kinda wild to me the way that our brains go into overdrive sometimes with self-preservation haha. This has been a great episode and with most of your pod episodes, it's great to hear your stories and know I'm not really alone in my experiences. Much love, and best of luck with those scorpions ❤

There was a river when I was younger and we were on a boat there was literally a tree under water and just the top was poking out but the water was clear. You could see the roots in the river bed and the fish swim through it. This river was like 30ft deep. The other one is botfly holes 🤢 I have worked in medical and have seen some nasty things but that is the worst…. Side note if you don’t know what that is ….. and have a fear of unnatural collection of small holes…. Don’t look it up.

*runs into the comments* the Bends is when the pressure on your body changes quickly enough that the air that is dissolved in your body becomes undissolved all at once comes out of solution and forms air bubbles that really really suck. That’s why you have to take it slow, so the air releases from your fluids at a manageable rate.

My biggest fear is losing control. It's part of the reason that I don't comment in most public spaces anymore. The thought that once I hit enter, it's out there, out of my control. One of my goals, starting last year, has been to try to get over this fear. I've been forcing myself to comment in certain twitch streams and in your videos. It's scary every time. (My stomach is churning right now)
For a funnier fear, I used to think that my most irrational fear was a fear of caterpillars. But it turns out that it's actually a rational fear. I remember a nightmare from when I was little, getting bit by a caterpillar and getting rashes all over. When I'd tell people, everyone would laugh. Then, my baby brother went and visited Nepal, where I was born. And he found out that there are caterpillars that bite/sting/itch!! My nightmare wasn't a nightmare at all! Never felt so redeemed! lol
Now, for a philosophical thought on fear. It's funny how some people's fear can be someone else's comfort. You both mentioned insignificance being a fear. Me, when I think about how big the universe is, and how we're only a dust, a speck, barely a presence at all, it makes me think of how my worries are also insignificant. I can make all the mistakes and it doesn't matter to the universe. So, it means I can learn from them and move on. Now, being a perfectionist, it means I'm ALWAYS trying to study my mistakes, so it doesn't mean it doesn't matter to me. But, it does mean that my mistakes aren't universe ending. It's ok. Not as big a deal as my brain is trying to make of it. Hence, a comfort.
Like, I'm gonna hit enter, and I'll have no control, but that's ok. Not world ending. *fingers crossed* ;-)
