As Roman Micah says, this is the golden age of EVs. One of the reasons is cars like this coming out where the implementation is surprisingly good. The manufacturers are really figuring out how to build good EVs and now are messing around with recipes on what works, what doesn’t, and what the markets want.

Test drove EQB back-to-back with GV60. As so often happens, specs only tell part of the story. On paper it's the GV60 all day with gaudy charging numbers and Macan-like looks. The reality is if you don't need the GV60's peaks of range, speed and charging, the EQB gives you much more usable passenger cabin, more practical space behind the back seats, less gussied up plastic trim, and all for the same price or less depending on spec. It's definitely a subjective thing, but I came in thinking GV60 couldn't be beat and left with a flat impression of the Genesis and appreciating the practicality of the EQB despite it not ticking the boxes on paper.

Good to read… very difficult to find the Genesis, Hyundai or Kia yet so many RUclipsrs seem to go purely on the numbers and not feel. We drove Model Y and EQB today and while the Y felt faster, we through that MB had more usable room and enjoyed the appearance and tech in the MB.

Most reviewers seem to ignore the day to day dependability of the software based features, which is fair because they only get it for a short while but a longer term review should take this into account! I'd say the biggest advantage Mercedes EQ has over the other manufacturers like GV60 or ID4 is their software. At least on my EQS, the software has performed flawlessly. No hanging, rebooting, quirks to work around or "promised" features that are continually delayed, etc. All of the features work on day 1 and they work well. Little touches like ADAS doing a great job in most situations, sailing/recuperating/driving really well and the dependability of MBUX are heads and shoulders ahead of the competition.

I personally like that all of the supporting systems such as air conditioning, wipers, and so on are all up front and not tucked into dealer-only accessible areas or beneath a "frunk" floor that can maybe fit.. a small carry on? It actually looks like it would be extremely easy for a mechanic to service. Yes, they could have put a fancy cover over all of that but.. why waste the money?
BUT.. the big hat trick is the HUD and improved navigation system. It's basically lifted from the previous gen S class and is superb - a massive upgrade from the GLB.
Also, the GLB had piles of options and it was nearly impossible to get the full "safety package" with all the sensors that most cars have now, due to them not wanting to make it as upscale as the GLC. This - it's basically all the goodies you get in the gas version of the GLC. Radar, lane assist, parking assist.. One checkbox, so most will have it added by the dealer, which is fantastic.

Mercedes is extremely conservative with its numbers. Especially with range. I've heard of many EVs with supposedly large ranges not actually doing very well in terms of efficiency or how they handle cold weather. CarWow does tests of Electric SUVs and runs them until dead and they all get around 220-240 miles, mostly due to weight.
As for the ride quality, the 300 has 18 inch tires and a noticeably softer ride.
I'm sad, though, that his version had none of the HUD or tech package features. It's a major selling point as it's basically a slightly simpler version found on the S class.

The only thing that's getting in the way of this car having a frunk is the fact that list of requirements doesn't call for one because idiots who don't drive EVs wrote it. I purchased a 300 back in early September when the car first became available in North America. 8 months in and I really love the car. I actually agree with everything Kyle laid out in the video though. We are a two car household and use this for driving around the city, or if we're going on a roadtrip that is less than 100 miles each way. I charge at home so the limited range is a non-issue for me. The concern over the charging speeds may be a bit overblown though. When I have charged at Electrify America I am consistently hovering in the 90kWh range which gets me from 20% to 80% in well under thirty minutes. Not great, but certainly not awful. I was lucky enough to purchase one at a time when I could still apply the $7500 tax credit so the deal made sense for me at the time.

The faux-luxury interior is just a miniaturized version of the E Class or S Class, and the design doesn’t translate well on such a small car. It’s a constant taunt that you should have pulled better grades in college. Like the gas version, the exterior style is terrible. It’s an awkward shape that looks more suitable on the streets of Mumbai than Los Angeles or New York. Engineering aspects, like the ridiculous engine bay is inexcusable. I think it's related to the chip shortage. Here in Europe you can order an EQB since beginning of 2022 but shortly after launch, electric seats were not an option anymore due to the chip situation. Same goes with blind spot detection. They are back on the feature list since a month or 2, but are still paid options (probably because they still can't afford getting it on all units).

It probably averages over 90kW in that range... The EQA is technically identical and has a very nice broad flat charging curve.

    • @gunterrr2302
      @gunterrr2302 Год назад +2

You'll get about 105kWh almost instantly from 5% until 65% and then it slowly drops until 75kWh when you reach 80% SoC. Average 90kWh is indeed a good estimate.
That's the problem when comparing cars by specs, the EV's advertising much higher charging speeds almost never reach that speed. Max 100kWh is pretty poor compared to the competition but the flat charging curve helps a lot.

Great review on an unknown entity. Kyle is my favorite EV reviewer, very comprehensive and a wealth of knowledge. I have a real problem with these full power launches in the city at traffic lights. It’s not safe. If some texting fool runs a red light, someone is getting hurt or killed. Even worse, if a pedestrian makes a wrong move, they’re likely to die from a speeding vehicle in the city. Please find a track or an empty country road to do acceleration tests. This has no place in a city going from traffic light to traffic light. Moreover, commenting on the competition like the 5 series in an impromptu street race is just irresponsible. Take it to the track and keep up all the other good work you do.

Why do all car reviewer's downplay the monstrous size of these giant car's by calling them small SUVs ? it's huge.
The Qashqai is a small SUV , the puma a crossover, this is huge. In no way is it small.
If you find a car that's not the hugest size ever, you can still call it a large SUV, lack of being a house on wheels doesn't mean it should be ascribed the descriptor small.
