The dog in Road Warrior was saved from being euthanized by the filmmakers, One day before he was to be put to sleep. After filming he was adopted by one of the Camera operators.
Tommy Vercetti The budget was too low, they couldn't afford a legitimate trained dog actor and accompanying human handler (IOWs like Eddie in the TV show "Frasier") so instead they went to the local dog pound and found that sheep dog mix. Sheep dogs are very intelligent and that particular dog must have shown a natural ability or had been previously well trained, so they saved it one day before it was scheduled to be put down, and you cannot tell anywhere in the movie that its not a professionally trained acting dog, lucky lucky dog.
KlunkerRider i bet you $500 the Camera man who took the dog named him either Dog or Max lol i have a mute Beagle Sheep dog man. hes cool as hell. not Blue Healer Mix. but smart as fuck lol
14th Mad Fact about Mad Max The Mazda Bongo van smashed in the opening scene of the first movie is actually director George Miller's own car as they'd run out of money. That's commitment.
The original Mad Max movie is raw power dripping with pure insanity. It was made on a budget that wouldn't cover the catering costs of a major motion picture too. So why can't other movies be as good? Why, why, why!
Just look at a film like Deadpool. It had the lowest budget out of all the superhero movies that came out this year, yet, it is hands down the best. It is mainly because Tim Miller (the director) had to work with a small budget of 58 mil which was cut down from the original 65 mil hence, actually trying and working hard to make a great film and he succeeded. However, Batman v Superman (250 mil), Civil War (250 mil), and Apocalypse (178 mil) had huge budgets but were disappointments (with the exception of Civil War, even though I think it is not as good everyone says it is). That's because many directors and studios think more money the better, and a better film, when that is not always the case. That is when 9 times out of 10, indie films are so much better because they have smaller budgets to work with and making a more personal film with great writing.
***** we've scientifically proven that excess resources leads to poor performance. The human mind appears to naturally succumb to this pitfall too. But at the same time studios, and directors have more of an agenda than just making a good movie. Sometimes a good movie today is better than a better movie tomorrow would be. Throwing money at things can speed processes up too.
Calling a Deadpool a good movie is a joke. Sure it is the best out of the superhero movies but still sucks ass and I regret watching it. While the tiny budget for Mad Max made the best movie of all times.
Even though the first Mad Max was so boring it took me 2 days to watch. I think the first Mad Max is remembered more for its legacy rather than the film itself. Mainly because I watched the film and only the last 15 minutes or so was entertaining. It was just a boring movie with some good performances and a good world. The second film is very well done, but a tad overrated. The third I have yet to watch. The fourth is just cinematic perfection.
Plus, I used Deadpool as an example more so for the fact it accomplished A LOT with a smaller budget. That's the point I was trying to get across, whether you liked the film or not.
I think it's really interesting that the Director and his team wrote detailed back stories for each character, weapon, vehicle etc in the films, to explain how they came to be the way they were, an incredible amount of effort when one of the main complaints about the Max films is their lack of a backstory. The MadMax Bible site has a couple of very interesting analyses of the timelines and backstories including information from production documents and scripts.
Doesn't even mention the 3rd film. I'm happy to admit i've only watched Chunderdome twice. The original a good 50+ till the tape melted and the 2nd at the least, 150 time after 3 years of watching it once a week, sometimes twice. Still sad about the first tape though...

Watched this trilogy right before I went to see the new one and it still holds up in this day and age. These facts just make me respect the filmmakers doubly so, if that's even possible.
If you recall seeing the Kenworth K100 cabover and MT trailer in "Mad Max", they installed a fake painting of the headlights and grille on the bull bar because the driver didn't want his rig to get damage when plowing into Toecutter and his bike.

Toecutter and his gang stayed in character during the entire shoot even between takes and would even go as far as leaving threatening notes it blood addressed to "The Bronze" in the MFP actors rooms
Look carefully at the scene when Toe Cutter get's creamed by the semi in Mad Max 1. They had to put a false front on the nose of the semi, due to a lack of budget, so as to avoid doing real damage to the truck.
In the first MM the bikey gang led by Hugh Keays-Byrne, were a threatening a bunch of dudes, no doubt they would have been in character all the way from Sydney to Melbourne. My friend did the hair and make up on the first and he said they were always in character, and really scarey to be around.
Absolutely LOVED #MadMax !! Highly recommend!! 2 hours packed with action it was such a WEIRD world yet fascinating! The costumes were on point, the actors were in character the whole time I felt like I was part of the action too! Lots of sound effects! I was mostly amused by the fact the cavalry brought their own guitarist and drummers to play along as their war went on! I loved the visuals, this was so unusual and to me unusual is interesting so I loved their "cult[ure] and crazy world! I had not heard ANYTHING about Mad Max prior to seeing this trailer. I don't even know who the actor "Max" is, I did not read anything about this on Wikipedia or any other site. Clean slate. This movie could stand alone no need to watch a gazillion other movies to understand it. Charlize Theron, stellar as always! It will all be clear as it progresses, there's climax all throughout highly progressive! The movie felt like it was about to end in 3 parts and I'm glad it didn't bc I craved for more! I can see how there can be more to this and I can't wait for the next installment! 5 stars for action and uniqueness oh by the way there's more action than talking in this movie so don't expect a chick flick bc this isn't! :D LOVED this madness GO SEE!!!
Mel Gibson is American, not Australian. I realize that he lived there and started his acting career there, but he was born in New York and is an American citizen.
+NoBrakes23 - Yep, he is an American and thats fine by me as Australian. His dad was draft dodger for him and his eldest son, and thats why they came to Australia to avoid going to Vietnam. Everyone uses this country for their benefit and never recognises it once they are famous. He wouldnt be famous without living our lifestyle, culture, or are film industry. Hence, why a lot of people come to Australia to promote themselves and make money, then when they are super famous, they cant be bothered with us anymore, unless they go broke. lol Mel turned out like a true American - an arsehole. lol
+NoBrakes23 ... And Mav F...That is not entirely true. He has a dual citizenship to both the U.S. & Australia. His father moved his rather large family there after being laid off as a brakeman for the railroad in New York. It really sounds like you have some anger issues you need to deal with ! Try therapy
+Mav F... I don't know what the "nope" is for. Seriously, do you kiss your mother with that mouth ? He has NOT been a jerk the entire time he has been in this country, his behavior recently hasn't been right or even cool but, he is a talented actor and an Academy Award winning director. What his father is or is not is irrelivant. Everyone of us is more than the some total of our parents !
Just got home from watching Mad Max Fury Road. Not much story line and it's almost 1 long car chase but an extreme car chase. Having said that it was an awesome movie that will keep you engaged from start to finish and satisfies your inner warrior. The custom vehicles were far more elaborate than the ones I got close up to on the set of Beyond Thunderdome which were either Ford F100 4wd's or Holden 1 tonners with the bodies removed and cow and horse hides stretched over them. The big foot rock crawler in Fury Road was much nicer.
The tow truck drivers in the first Mad Max, were paid a slab (box) of beer and $20 cash each... which is actually a common payment method for favors in Australia.
Children of The porn even Max's throw together car/truck/piece of shit what ever the fuck ya wanna call it on Thunderdome was a Ford f150 frame with a cut up xa-xc ford falcon cab section dropped on it so yeah you're right.
According to the DVD commentary on The Road Warrior, the dog in the movie was picked up at the last minute from a local dog shelter. It was just an ordinary mutt and didn't have any special training, but Miller says in the commentary that it was a "natural actor" and a "little star". It took a particular liking for Mel during the filming. After the movie was completed, the dog was given to one of the crew members. Where he spent the long remainder of his life herding sheep on the crew member's ranch.
Not to take anything from the original Mad Max, one of my all-time favorites, but a lot of the scenes, action, camera angles, and concepts are lifted from Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry. And it's OK to enjoy both :)
The rumor about how Gibson got the role is simply not true. He was a well known actor in Australia at the time, and he came in and auditioned like normal. This is according to Miller himself.
***** Wow, he didn't say Australian BORN. He just said Australian which is correct. He is American born, but he is Australian. Please think before you post ignorance.
***** "I don't think of myself as either American or Australian really, I'm a true hybrid. It's a good thing for me because both of them are really good countries" - Mel Bibson
***** It's actually more interesting than that. Mel's paternal grandmother, Eva Mylott, was an Australian opera singer who married an American in New York in 1917 and died in an accident there in 1920.
***** Mel gibson once stated that he is not Australian and gets annoyed when people call him one. He simply lived there. Also he hasn't done an aussie film since Max 3. So as far as we are concerned...he is an american, end of story
when you watch the Road Warrior in the last truck chase after Wez grapples the semi door, look at the next shot THERE IS A CAMERA MAN SITTING ON THE FLOOR NEXT TO MEL!!!! Always loved a good sci-fi action flick!
They missed the fact that they had to overdub the voices from English into 'Mericun' for the US release of the original because Americans are, you know, exceptionally smart.
The first DVD I bought in 2001, was Mad Max I was so excited as I was reading the box in BLockbuster.."OMG it has the original actors voices !!!" I exclaimed in the store.. I hated that dialogue was re done when Id seen it in theaters. The voices of the actors convey the acting as top notch.
This had nothing to do with one countries "IQ" as you put it. It had to do with all the Aussie slang used. COnsidering back then there was no internet or any real way for people to look things up, most of the WORLD would have no CLUE what they were saying if they had kept in the slang. IMO, they should have just kept the accents and done away with the slang.
The Road Warrior is the greatest max film, it spawned its own Genre, there’s plenty of Italian And Filipino Road Warrior Clones, all good fun, well mostly !!!
Where I live they had the change the laws for younger drivers to not allow more than one of them in the car at once. Entire groups of friends were being lost in road crashes. Was one or two infernos that forced the lawmaker's hands. Police pursuit vehicles roam the highways.
The video states about Mel Gibson "The Australian got the role..." but Mel is an American, born in New York in 1956, and his family moved to Australia when he was 12.
You forgot the one about George Miller sacrificing his own car in a scene in the first Mad Max movie because the film budget was running out. In the first chase, Charlie and Roop hit a blue Mazda Bongo van. that was Miller's own car.The Kawasakis in that movie were donated for the film. The black Monaro coupe that was blown up in the first chase was actually a 6 cylinder. Just in case you're thinking "what a waste," it was in crap condition to begin with. I know the sound that engine was making, because I used to own an HQ Kingswood (the sedan version of that coupe) which had a 202, a modified exhaust and a Holley. Sounded exactly like it at 3000rpm
1:08 What other films has he been in where he wears a mask? He played Bane and wore a mask for less than half of Fury Road......... I wouldn't call that a love of masked roles
Here's a bit of info I read after the first movie came out. Not sure how true it is. NOBODY was hurt DURING the filming of the movie. But 3 members of the crew were in a car accident on the way to the set one day.
Yes you did miss one. In Mad Max 1 there is a scene where are car smashes through a caravan. Apparently this is the first time that such a stunt had been attempted anywhere in the world.
The 3 police vehilces at the begining of Mad Max, mel gibsons interceptor was a vic pol factory fitted 351 ex police car. The other, a ex melbourne police car fitted with a 302 and the final a ex melbourne taxi. The van (blue) was the directors that was smashed due to budget.
Something nobody ever talks about in these "things you didn't know" or "interesting facts" vids is when Max and the feral kid have the final crash at the end when they are bouncing around in the cab Mel makes a dumb face and sticks his tongue out. It's weird and silly and isn't something Max would do. Doesn't fit. If you pause the vid at 4:39 you'll see it. This may not be true because I read it year's ago and never saw anything else on it but it said Mel was goofing around with the kid during the scene and when they edited the movie they either accidentally used it or it was left in as a joke. What I always thought was there was probably more of them being tossed around in the cab but they didn't notice Mel making the dumb face and couldn't afford re-shoots so when they edited it they cut the scene shorter but couldn't fully get the dumb face out because they needed as much cab as they could get. All they needed to do was edit out one second so I don't know if any of that is ture. That face doesn't make sense. I have to look away at that part because it takes me out of the movie for a second. It's stupid and has bothered me for years. One of the replies I've gotten on another video said it was probably because of the fake blood he'd had problems with but I highly doubt that
Max had a soft spot for the feral kid, and would do things for him that might seem 'out of character' - it was probably an attempt to reassure the kid.
Mel did NOT get the part the way this video says. This is the "myth." Mel was not beat up, he was not bruised, he was there himself to audition and got the role.
Another story from the first is that one motorcycle stunt man was offered a share in the profits of $100 on the spot. Thinking the film would disappear into obsurity he took the cash. If he took a cut he would have made many thousand of dollars.
The dog in Road Warrior was saved from being euthanized by the filmmakers, One day before he was to be put to sleep. After filming he was adopted by one of the Camera operators.
john o OMG your telling me the dog acually got hurt in that movie???
Tommy Vercetti The budget was too low, they couldn't afford a legitimate trained dog actor and accompanying human handler (IOWs like Eddie in the TV show "Frasier") so instead they went to the local dog pound and found that sheep dog mix. Look carefully at the scene when Toe Cutter get's creamed by the semi in Mad Max 1. They had to put a false front on the nose of the semi, due to a lack of budget, so as to avoid doing real damage to the truck.
4:09 Woah! I thought that was a dummy flying through the air. Didn't know it was an actual stuntman!
He was stunt director, FURY ROAD
And flipped the Interceptor over in beginning..'to show young bucks how it's done'
4:09 WITNESS ME!
+Ronan Slevin got to do something first, bro
MEDIOCRE!
i always thought that was a ragdoll or somthing 0.0
The guy on the back probably was a doll, but there must have been someone driving that car.
*guy breaks leg and the film making became a chaos* WITNESSS!!!!!
The final scene in the first film, where Johnny the Boy is given the option to cut off his foot to escape inspired the entire Saw franchise.
one of The Knight Riders dialogue in the first film was from the AC/DC song Rocker
Even by today's standards, Mad Max 1 & 2 are still badass!! ( I haven't watched Beyond Thunderdome)
don't waste your time with Blunderdome - certainly don't waste any money for it.
In the first MM the bikey gang led by Hugh Keays-Byrne, were a threatening a bunch of dudes, no doubt they would have been in character all the way from Sydney to Melbourne. My friend did the hair and make up on the first and he said they were always in character, and really scarey to be around.
Damn!! I never heard of the movie "Stoned" now that's another treasure I have to search for and see..
Excellent, MM and MM2 will never be equaled.
Road Warrior is by far the best Mad Max movie, so far.
1:47 thought that was Donald Trump for a second
It was.
No CGI, just Balls
when she gets her ice cream and you hear from the roof as shes leaving the ice cream store "meeeow, meeeow baaaah" hahaha
The tow truck drivers in the first Mad Max, were paid a slab (box) of beer and $20 cash each... which is actually a common payment method for favors in Australia.
Who else misses the old Red XA ford falcon with the duly wheels for the back. Man the guys at mad max really like the Ford Falcon.
Where he spent the long remainder of his life herding sheep on the crew member's ranch.
how did you get the drum like sound effect
Not to take anything from the original Mad Max, one of my all-time favorites, but a lot of the scenes, action, camera angles, and concepts are lifted from Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry. And it's OK to enjoy both :)
Yeah you forgot to mention that in the Road Warrior his Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler didn't have a name. He just called it dog.
My gf has a Blue Healer...that dog is fucking crazy!!!
It is absolutely crazy that an emergency doctor designed the choreography of the sets. It is perfect irony.
Yes you did miss something about Max. Most of the time his sawed off was *empty.*
Please, stop talking about Fury Road... We all are here for Mad Max. Understand? Thanks.
it is weird how in the movies it has motorcycles but in Mad Max the video game it has no motorcycles
Now that is called devotion to art. Putting your self in life threatening situations for the perfect shot
The rumor about how Gibson got the role is simply not true. He was a well known actor in Australia at the time, and he came in and auditioned like normal. This is according to Miller himself.
In my opinion, the still frame used for this videos thumbnail single-handedly inspired the entire fallout video game series
13th Mad Fact about Mad Max: Mel Gibson is American not Australian.
***** Wow, he didn't say Australian BORN. He just said Australian which is correct. He is American born, but he is Australian. Please think before you post ignorance.
***** "I don't think of myself as either American or Australian really, I'm
a true hybrid. It's a good thing for me because both of them are really
good countries" - Mel Bibson
mazon21 Well Mel, you da man.
Mad Max One Is the Best
no the road warrior
Road Warrior surpasses it
I prefer mad max 2 but there's nothing wrong with liking the One the best
But as far as sequels you gotta admit that Two is the best one in history
Here's a fact I didn't like Fury road, not at all.
They missed the fact that they had to overdub the voices from English into 'Mericun' for the US release of the original because Americans are, you know, exceptionally smart.
Aleks Hunter but thankfully the original Australian dub is an option on DVD/Blu-Ray.
Aleks Hunter Yeah have both copies but got the murican one by accident. Just a hoarder can't get rid of it.
Don't forget that the main villain in the road warrior is supposed to be Jim Goose
Kelby Watson Yeah that's correct. After he was burnt beyond recognition he became Humungus!
Ben Schmidt He musta started hitting the roids pretty hard
Ben Schmidt really?
Kelby Watson This was the original idea, but it was dropped. Humungus is NOT Jim Goose.
+Kelby Watson Seriously. Since when did Goose have the Humungous's accent?
the road in which the final chase scene was shot in "The Road Warrior", is actually somebodies driveway/ private road
the blower on his car was not real
Not sure if someone else mentioned this but a lot of the people in Mad Max 1 were paid in beer because that's all they could afford to pay them with.
Where I live they had the change the laws for younger drivers to not allow more than one of them in the car at once. Entire groups of friends were being lost in road crashes. Was one or two infernos that forced the lawmaker's hands. Police pursuit vehicles roam the highways.
huge respect for stunt people!!!!!!
AWESOME!!! THANX
is that kotaku highlights guy?
Is it true that many of the cast members were paid in a few tens of dollars and a "slab" of beer?
Is this Chris from Kotaku?
great vid
The video states about Mel Gibson "The Australian got the role..." but Mel is an American, born in New York in 1956, and his family moved to Australia when he was 12.
when your job is so dangerous, you have to prep for surgery 12 hours in advance and have medical staff on hand before you even clock in
You forgot the one about George Miller sacrificing his own car in a scene in the first Mad Max movie because the film budget was running out.
I wouldn't call that a love of masked roles
theres a mad max museum near where mad max was filmed near broken hill
Here's a bit of info I read after the first movie came out. Not sure how true it is. NOBODY was hurt DURING the filming of the movie. But 3 members of the crew were in a car accident on the way to the set one day.
Bravo george , love those kwakas
For those that have not yet seen Fury Road , y'all need to get on that asap ok, it's definitely worth it
Amazing
greetings from humungus your gravely disappoint me you hoard your gasoline.
Fucking hell. Broke his leg that already had a steel pin in it. Thats some hardcore stunt work. I hope he got paid enough for that heroic effort.
2:45 Mel-burn
Yes you did miss one. In Mad Max 1 there is a scene where are car smashes through a caravan. Apparently this is the first time that such a stunt had been attempted anywhere in the world.
The 3 police vehilces at the begining of Mad Max, mel gibsons interceptor was a vic pol factory fitted 351 ex police car.
The other, a ex melbourne police car fitted with a 302 and the final a ex melbourne taxi.
The van (blue) was the directors that was smashed due to budget.
4:05 He didn't miss his jump. He crashed into the car by accident and broke his leg.
One of the replies I've gotten on another video said it was probably because of the fake blood he'd had problems with but I highly doubt that
Max had a soft spot for the feral kid, and would do things for him that might seem 'out of character' - it was probably an attempt to reassure the kid.
the interceptor didnt have a real supercharger until fury road and even then it gets trashed in the first five minutes
Mel did NOT get the part the way this video says. This is the "myth." Mel was not beat up, he was not bruised, he was there himself to audition and got the role.
@1:13 mel gibson is american, not australian.
Yes he is
Caleb Mayfield are u agreeing or disagreeing?
He is Australian
he was born in new york bruh
And he lived most of his life in Australia. He has a citizenship here and in america. So he is Australian. He even has the accent
Byron Kennedy actually died in a helicopter crash on set of Mad Max 2 in the helicopter that’s in the movie
Another story from the first is that one motorcycle stunt man was offered a share in the profits of $100 on the spot. Thinking the film would disappear into obsurity he took the cash. If he took a cut he would have made many thousand of dollars.
Mel has stated that his MFP leathers where vinyl just like everyone else's in the film
Interesting, I am a year late, but I have never heard this one. Always, "His was one of 2 real leather costumes"
