Indeed that seems to be only option being deaf and blind so I can't do most of these "make sure..." steps. Push comes to shove I can possibly make sure to call the company in advance and discuss the rates then.
As someone who has done this job for over 10 years, I'm aware of drivers who have done things like this, but the percentage is very low. Most of them I know, including myself follow the rules and provide a service that is professional and helpful. Don't ask a driver to take you the fastest way as mentioned in the video, the fastest way can cost more money, because most meters run off time and distance. Normally if asked, it should be the shortest route. But do take into consideration that different routes can be affected by traffic and if be the case, if the faster route distance wise was not much longer than the shorter route, then ask your driver their advice and how much more they believe it to cost? Taxi drivers who have studied a knowledge test, will be able to figure out at least 3 or 4 routes in their heads along the way, so they can help assist you with the best option for you.
Thank you. I am a cab driver myself and subscribed to this channel and I am appalled at this video! I am unsubscribing now. I would Never do any of those things to people! Wow!
They really are not worth their prices many times. I so can't wait for automatic ones (robotaxies) to take the roads. Then just MAYBE as a deaf and blind person can I take routes just like everyone elses at least on a semi-frequent basis. To go an actual work place, do shopping, meet ups, etc.
In Greece, taxi is an overpriced service ever since I can remember. As years passed, less and less people were asking for a taxi but taxi drivers became paradoxically more. Will admit that government implies heavy taxes on them but most of them are rude, shady and slimy that makes me prefer to walk for 3 hours than give a single coin to them.
I’m a taxi driver and I can weigh in on some of these: A taxi driver might take longer to pick you up because in bigger companies where bookings are done on the computer, there is a virtual queue for taxis that have plotted into a certain area. Sometimes the car coming to pick you up is much further away than another one close by but because he’s the first to be plotted into that area, that job will go to him. Unless it’s from a public place like a hotel or a shopping Center, then it usually goes to the closest taxi. Yes, someone’s Taxi licence has to be displayed in the cab, but that’s just half the story. A T or F extension has to be valid on the actual taxi driver’s drivers licence as well as the plaque on the dash board. Bigger companies offer fixed fares on phone or app bookings. When that happens, it’s an incentive for the taxi driver to take the most economic route possible. If the taxi driver asks for a cash job, ie: doesn’t have the meter on in order to not be tracked and therefore avoid paying GST and taxes on the fare, refuse!
Eldergeek I’m in Western Australia, there’s a taxi company called Swan Taxis and their app shows how far away the driver is, and offers fixed fares. They’re the biggest company of 4 different companies in WA.
I drove cab for seven years, from 2002 to 2009, but we went by zones, not meters. That meant it was in our best interest to get a passenger to his or her destination as quickly as possible, but it also meant we could transport multiple passengers. As for tricks such as making a deliberate point not to carry change in hopes of getting tips, I always had $100 change and would even make a trip to the driveup bank if necessary to get change.
That's why it's good to book a taxi driver from a taxi company where there give you a fixed price. Therefore, choosing a longer route doesn't change anything of the price.
I'm a taxi driver in Australia, much of this isn't even possible with us and others can have legitimate reasons. Also, our meters run by distance and not time so yes that 10-15 minute trip from the airport certainly does cost you $40+ sometimes. Also! You forgot to add that the driver knows when you're lying ;)
same in the USA, been a cab driver for 9 years and I can't understand, where this guy pulled this info from, looks like some bits and pieces and he clearly, doesn't know what he is talking about. Now, I wonder if all his videos like that, misleading.
At least here the side of the car says $1.75 per rider over the age of 2. You can’t argue if it’s spelled out in advance. Plus our drivers are friendly and will start a conversation and will stop if asked to. It’s nice that they are willing to point out things I didn’t even know about after living here for 22 years.
A driver can't start a conversation? False. In fact, from an airport, I don't think I can _ever_ recall a ride that did not include the icebreaker "Is this your first trip to _____?"
I go with a taxi to school everday and the drivers charge the ride per person (as I can see on the little note with the prices they have on their front window), but for the rest they don't do all of these negative points that are said in the video, so this info is kind of new for me!
In the UK there are taxis and private hires. Taxis are known as Hackney Carriages and are fitted with a meter by law and the meter is set to the maximum tarriff the local authority dictates a hackney can charge. However, many operators opt to have a lower tarriff set and these are tamper proof. Although a lot of operators are starting to use PDAs as taxi meters these days and they still can not change the maximum price and when the meter is running. It can not be changed in mid ride. Private hires can legally charge whatever they like even if its above the maximum tarriff of the local authority. But must be the price has to be agreed before the journey. We are also allowed to charge per person more than 2 passengers and each luggage that is more than hand luggage and can charge for dogs. Their are exemptions such as disabled customers will never be charged more to carry a wheelchair or extra luggage or passengers and guide dogs for the blind also not be charged for. Thats the law.
I remember a time where my usual taxi firm weren’t able to pick me up for over an hour and I rung another. The trip was from my home to work was usually £7.50 during the day (without a public holiday adding a multiplier) and the guy went a ridiculous route trying to charge me £25.00 saying it was to avoid traffic, of which there was none. Never used that firm again 😅
As a taxi dispatcher for 10 years the drivers do not like traffic jams. They make more money moving quickly between customers than they do moving slowly. Call volume is the name of the game.

Taxi Driver here: 1. In my jurisdiction a taxi must have change for a $20. 2. Very rarely do taxi driver pull this stunt. We make more money by getting rid of the customer as possible. 3. See #2. 7. Rarely happens 8. I get a feel for whether the customer wants to talk. 9. Ask the driver if he can wait. Drivers may other thing they have to do such as pick up another client at scheduled or bring the car in for service. 10. Only one rate in my jurisdiction. 11. Very rarely a cab driver does this. 12. Sometime the driver willing to drive you at lower rate because it slow day. 14. If you try to get flat rate from me I will estimate higher than I think the meter will be because there may be some unforeseen traffic accident or construction. 15. GPS are set to the fastest route not the shortest. Driver do not know what the cheapest is . It varies depending traffic. the fastest route is very rarely the cheapest. 16. Rarely happens. 17. In my jurisdiction, the dispatch no control on whether the driver accept the call or not. It could take longer for driver to get there because the driver who accepted call is father away than the dispatcher thought the driver was going to take the call. 18. In my jurisdiction, I can charge you for each passenger above the first passenger and handling bags and luggage. Each jurisdiction their own rules. What legal some jurisdiction may not be legal in others.

Point of correction: A taxi driver will never intentionally waste time during a pickup doing errands for himself. He may be on a trip when the request came. Also, the same reasons why taxi drivers don't like waiting for passengers when asked to stop and wait, the reason why taxi drivers don't like traffic jams. Unless he is driving on a, let's say, 1.8 or 2.0 surge then he may not mind.
So this is my story from a taxi experience.. We were going to a hotel, and we went into a taxi. There is lots of buildings and stuff and I hated the smell of taxis, they give me headaches so I decided to sleep instead. We were 3 minutes away from the hotel and it was almost dark. I think we were in the taxi for 10 minutes. When I woke up the hotel still wasn't at sight. So I just stayed awake and look out the window. I noticed that the driver was doing lots of turns. Our bill was 12 dirhams until it turned to 15 dirhams. It was a little bit expensive for a taxi drive to go to a hotel just some minutes away. So when we left the taxi everyone was like "He wanted us to pay more, he was taking lots of turns" And I agreed too. Same thing happened to my mom except she was heading home. She noticed it so when it was time for her to leave the taxi, she payed less and confronted the taxi driver.
Should have paid the driver the money. Then call the cab company and/or the taxi commission. If they determined that he did something shady they will make the driver return the money fine him.
I drove a cab for 27 years in Denver Co. 1. No change? The taxi driver has to go get change, and not charge for it, taxi drivers have to have change for a 20. 2. Ever been there before? That is false, we don't care if you are a tourist or a local. 3. Airport taxis charge tourists more: False, the meter rates are set by the state, and by law we have to go the shortest route, the state sends undercover customers to check. 4. Starting meter early, it can happen, but no. Usually they start the meter upon arrival, and the waiting time is 3 minutes. 5. Yup, we have the secret button to summon police, but we don't use it if we think we may have a no pay, if felt like I was not gonna get paid, I asked to be paid up front. 6. Love traffic jams. False, false, false. 7. Taxis can drop you off earlier than needed. True, and all we have to say to the company is that I felt threatened. 8. They can't start a conversation with you. False, I started conversation all the time...and if they were too silent, it was time to get nervous. Robbers are really quiet. 9. You can find yourself stranded. True, be nice to cabbies. 10 and 11. Check meter, keep track of meter. True, the rates have to be posted. 12. Check valuables before leaving the taxi. True, the taxi driver has to return your stuff for a tip, if you left it in the cabin, but if you left something in the trunk, it is the cabbies responsibility. 13. Taxis can lure you in with low estimate. True, however, is better to ask for flat rate, but note that by law, the meter has to be on when hired, or they are not covered by insurance, and if a trip is flat rate, it has to be posted, such as airport to downtown. 14. Ask for fixed price in advance. True 15. Drivers can manipulate GPS settings, half true....yes, but we always ask: shortest or fastest? 16. May not have a license. Maybe, but it does have to be displayed. 17. Cabs take a while to pick you up because dispatch takes their time in putting the call out. 18. They can charge per person, True: A dollar per extra person, after 2 people.
Back in 1989, I took a taxi from the bus station to the YMCA. The driver deliberately let me off *across the street* from the Y, dumped my junk onto the sidewalk and sped off. To this day I get freaked out whenever I remember that cabbie and how OK he was with mistreating me.
A lot of stuff in this video is not true.. I'm a taxi driver and I have been for a while now and I can tell you that the main reason we take a longer time than usual to pick up is because we don't have a taxi cab for each individual in the city, we have to pick up and drop off our customers and we get another trip after we drop off, the cab closest to the call gets that call and for instance say a person tell dispatcher he wants to go to Walmart and be dropped off there and call back for another taxi when he's done, but he changes his mind and wants a round trip (wants the driver to wait and he will pay the wait time) after he gets to Walmart, ok so the dispatcher sets up the trips so that the driver can pick up close to where he drops off so he's not going back and forth across town waisting gas, so dispatcher probably has another customer at walmart and she planned on the driver picking up the next customer at walmart after he dropped off his current customer so dispatcher told new customer the driver was going to be there in like 15 minutes but since the current customer change his mind and wants a round trip, dispatcher has to either wait for another cab to become vacant and she will have to get that driver to come all the way across town most likely and it's going to take extra time or she can get the same driver to come back and get you after he gives the customer their round trip which is going to take more time as well but no we do not typically run errands and stuff like that because we're out here to make money and the more trips we can pick up quicker the more likelihood that the customer is going to still be there and not have taken another cab because customers usually call two or three different cab companies and jumps in the first thing that comes along and that screws the other ones out of gas in time and they could have been running other trips

Did that taxi driver get any punishment?
Should have paid the driver the money. Then call the cab company and/or the taxi commission. If they determined that he did something shady they will make the driver return the money fine him.
@@il798liOld Only if they reported him to the taxi company or the taxi commission.
True
Well it’s about time
Back in 1989, I took a taxi from the bus station to the YMCA. The driver deliberately let me off *across the street* from the Y, dumped my junk onto the sidewalk and sped off. To this day I get freaked out whenever I remember that cabbie and how OK he was with mistreating me.
Its like more better then school my school havent even learned these things
Seeing this in times of the pandemic its sooo frustrating ha3x

3:43 you just gave them a clue your a tourist😅
Taxi services will set their price to $4.50 before you ride and the price rises along the way. This way they make extra money.
Oh! No wonder! I always give them a tip, but now I think I will stop.
I take a taxi to school every morning
